Microsoft Office 2016, sharing violations with OneDrive

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 07:47 AM PST

I keep getting sharing violations while trying to save office documents in my one drive. The problem goes away if I uninstall OneDrive or if I save them to my Dropbox. I'd really rather use OneDrive for these files as my OneDrive is larger (6 GB vs 32).

Any ideas? I turned off OneDrive sharing.

    Hey guys

I feel asleep and my laptops battery died, plugged it back in and restarted it. It loaded up in like a lower quality/zoomed in look. Im pretty sure there is a name for this but I can't remember. I tried a system restore to a few weeks ago and it loaded up with the same issue, any help would be appreciated.

Using 60" 4k display instead of a projector for small office.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 05:49 PM PST

I am considering in buying a regular 4k TV display to be used in a small office environment instead of a regular overhead projector.

I have been using my TV at home using normal Windows 10 projection capabilities and I thought it would be a nicer fit to our office. I was planning to also buy a TV moving stand.

Is it better to wirelessly project individual PC or is it more advisable to hook a small PC to the TV and use it as a big PC and project from there?

    Any recommendations on alternatives?

It's impossible to disable web search in Cortana/Windows search and it's really annoying

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 11:23 AM PST

Since the Fall Creators Update, Microsoft seems to have made it impossible to disable web search in Cortana. Additionally, whatever you're typing in the search bar is automatically send to Microsoft and to Bing as a search, and again, this can apparently not be turned off.

I regularly search for an application (IntelliJ IDEA) by typing idea into the search bar, and I get a suggestion for a German price comparison website (idealo.de) as a first result, which is absolutely useless to me.

If anyone has a solution to this problem, please feel free to share.

Connecting to a VPN acts differently on different Windows 10 installs...

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 10:32 AM PST

On my home PC, if I click the network icon in the tray, the list of VPNs and interfaces pops up and I can click "Connect" and connect to the VPN right from that menu. Example

On my work PC, however, clicking any of the VPNs doesn't give me the option to connect to them. Instead, it opens up the Settings menu, and I have to find the VPN, click it, and click "Connect" from there. It's an extra couple of steps, and it's pretty annoying when I have to do it a dozen times a day.

How do I change this behavior and get Windows to let me connect to a VPN right from the pop up tray menu on my work PC?

Four different operating systems only want to boot from one

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 07:58 AM PST

My problem is whenever I start up my computer it asks me which operating system to boot on but I only want to boot on one for me it looks like: Windows 7 Windows 7 Windows 7 Windows 10 (recovered)

I know there is a way to delete them by going into "msconfig" and deleting the other three but I might need to use them if I need to reinstall windows or something related to that so is there any other way?

Windows' windows keep becoming unresponsive after update. (1709)

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 09:55 AM PST

First off, it isn't the typical unresponsiveness - I'll open the window and I'll see its contents, but when I click anywhere on the window it disappears. The minimize animation does not play. I'm pretty sure the contents of the screen are frozen, so the window's contents aren't being updated at all. Restarting the application fixes it.

It seems like it happens after I open a render window (DirectX/OpenGL). I'll open it, close it, and then random windows will become unresponsive. It started by only doing it to Spotify, but now it has started doing it to Steam and, once, to Discord.

I'm pretty sure this started happening when I updated to 1709, or one of its minor updates, so I don't think it is hardware although it is possible.

    Old Laptop, sluggish windows 10

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 09:52 AM PST

So I have an old laptop, acer aspire 5539, and I put windows 10 on it without even looking at the performance it had with windows 7. Its feeling pretty sluggish and I was wondering if anyone thinks it would be faster with windows 7. its a huge hassle for a number of a reasons to reformat it that I wont go into, but if it wont be a performance gain I'm not going to bother.

Connect an XP PC to a Windows 10 using an Ethernet cable?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 09:20 AM PST

Hey everyone, I have a (rather old) Eee laptop running XP and a new ASUS running 10. I want to be able to share and access files between them using a crossover Ethernet cable. I have looked and tried many different ways to do it I found online, but it seems like every method is totally different and they all end up failing at some point. Ie, I have tried the workgroup thing but the XP computer can't connect to it, I tried accessing my 10 computer using the browser command line (\name of my 10 PC), logged in using email and pass and nothing. Ping works one way but not the other... I'm no expert but I can follow these kind of walkthroughs and there's always a step that won't work. I'm kind of desperate, is there any fail proof way or things I should know?

I expect this to be hated on but will it be possible to avoid the Intel microcode update that patches vulnerability at the expense of a 5 to 30% performance hit?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 12:41 PM PST

I'm an experienced, computer-savvy power user. I trust 100% of all software on my computer. I know exactly what is installed, where it came from, and who develops it. I use the same software all the time. The only non-open-source programs I use are Steam and foobar2000.

I totally understand why the average person needs this security patch. It's certainly necessary for the public at large. But not to me. I have nothing to gain from it, but a lot to lose.

With that in mind, can we (Windows 10 users) avoid it? Or is MS gonna ram it down our throats?

    Disconnected logins after restart

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 01:17 AM PST

I have upgraded my computer to 1709 (Fall Creator Update) and since then i've noticed that user accounts do not get logged off after restart.

    Steps to reproduce:

    • log on as user, start application (for example Windows Explorer or Control Center)

    • reboot via the start menu

    • logon with another user profile and start the task manager; the previous user should be logged on and displayed as "disconnected"

There are a few internet posts with similar problems: * https://www.tenforums.com/user-accounts-family-safety/96025-windows-10-last-user-remains-logged-after-reboot.html

There are also some solution proposals: * Disable fast startup

    • Disable "Use my sign-in info to automatically findish setting up my device after an update or restart" in control center -> Accounts -> Sign-In options

Right now, i have configured both options and it works for shutdown-scenarios only, but not for restart. Is there a way to log off the users entirely independently of restart or shutdown? Am i missing something else?

Also sorry for language, english is not my main language :(

What is Microsoft Office "Click to Run"?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 06:46 AM PST

I recently purchased and installed Microsoft Office 2016. Can anyone explain to me in basic terms what Microsoft Office Click-to-Run is for Office 2016? The official explanation from Microsoft doesn't really make sense to me:

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj219427.aspx

"Click-to-Run is a Microsoft streaming and virtualization technology that reduces the time that is required to install Office and helps you run multiple versions of Office on the same computer. The streaming technology enables you to download and begin to use an Office product before the whole product is installed on your computer. The virtualization technology provides an isolated environment for Office to run on your computer. This isolated environment allows you to run the latest version of Office side-by-side with an earlier version of Office that is already installed on your computer."

I don't understand; does that mean that my computer is "streaming" Office even if I thought I had installed Office 2016 locally on my hard disk? So it's accessing the internet? What are the benefits of this? Can I access Office without an internet connection?
