fps drops when replacing power cable

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 08:57 AM PST

i have a 130W cable that is broken and i replaced it with a 90W cable, just browsing sites and watching videos seems to be just fine but when i play games my fps heavily drops and makes it unplayable. I get a message that says i shouldnt be using a 90W cable when i plug it in, but the store guy said it shouldnt matter ( they also didnt have any higher watt cables) i didnt ask him about if it affected gaming specificly though. Any way to fix this or do i need higher watt?

Does the Intel CPU scandal means I'm better off waiting to buy the next generation of laptops?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 11:31 AM PST

My current laptop is less than 6 months old but I would like one lighter, with a bigger battery.

With the news of the Intel CPU problems and a smaller bug affecting AMD am I better off not replacing my current laptop and just waiting for the next gen without bugs?

    ultrabook for photo editor?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 04:56 AM PST

Alright is there a good alternative to Dell XPS 13 (8th gen intel version) for lightweight photo editing laptop? What are the upcoming laptop that i should wait for? I really need a laptop with good screen and colour accuracy, 8th gen processor and must have a full size SD card.

I am disappointed that the 2018 edition replaced the full size SD with a micro... and I was planning to get the previous version but what is putting me off is that I'm reading a lot of quality control issue and dell customer support problems by Dell.

My budget is around £1100, so are the future ultrabooks going to follow this trend or are there any upcoming laptops I should wait for? or just get the previous version of Dell XPS 13?

    Thanks!

SSD and External HD Management Guidance

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 10:47 AM PST

    Hi there,

I recently purchased an HP 15-bw089na Laptop with a 256GB SSD, as well as a traditional 2TB External HDD to go with it. I understand that I am supposed to install programs on the SSD and saves files on the HDD to improve performance, but what about files that are created in these programs? Is there a guide for laptop users using an internal SSD and external HDD to maximize performance?

    Need a Laptop (CA$ 800-1100)

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 10:32 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Approximately $800-1100 Canadian.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I need a long battery life, 5+ hours effective at the very least. Every laptop I get seems to have just over half the advertised battery life and that infuriates me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Important, but not more than specs.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'll be running Linux on it, but if it comes with Windows I'll just wipe that away for Linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. About 14-16". While I'm fine with smaller, I don't think my laptop bag can fit any bigger than 16".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light gaming, heavy multitasking. Quadcore is a minimum.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Light gaming as I said. The most intensive game I'd be running on this is either Minecraft or Slime Rancher. I just want them to be playable, so 1600x900@30fps for Slime Rancher. Integrated graphics can probably handle that no issue.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality should be good, especially the hinges. At least one USB 3.1 Type-C port is a requirement. 802.11ac and Bluetooth are requirements, though I think it'd be hard to find a laptop without those nowadays. SSD is a requirement, NVMe m.2 SSD would be greatly appreciated. However, if the laptop is on the lower end of my budget, then I can just buy a SATA Samsung 850 EVO ($121.50) or an NVMe Samsung 960 EVO ($159.99). Take that into account of the budget if you select a laptop without an SSD. CPU must have at least four cores (Dual core with hyperthreading does not count.) and performance must be at least equal to a i7-6500U. 8GB of RAM is a minimum.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. A few days ago I posted a laptop request for my mom. Then I realized my current laptop hits every one of her requirements. But there's not a lot of great options that fit her needs, especially in that she needed a numpad. So I'm thinking of having her buy me a new laptop, and give her my current still pretty new laptop. It's probably going to end up cheaper than most of the laptops I've found for her to buy herself.

USA $300. Gaming PC companion for use at university campus

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 10:29 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: My total budget is $300 USD, US.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't need a 2in1 or a touch screen. I care about battery life but not a lot. The specs don't need to be the best, but I do need a Core i3 running at 2.2GHz, or anything better or equivalent, and preferably with 8GB of RAM, but 4 is fine.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? The lighter the better. No need for it to be thin

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Around 15" is fine

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I just need to run the office suit and teamviewer to access my PC at home.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard would be great as I plan on programming and typing on it a lot.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't mind buying a used laptop as long as it's reliable. I also have a student email if that helps find student discounts.

I've been planning to buy a new laptop, but now with meltdown and spectre, should I?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 02:07 AM PST

Hello guys, I've been planning to buy a new laptop for a year now and due to financial strains only now got to it and am supposed to go get one next week. But now with the whole CPU debacle with Intel, should I really buy a new computer right now? Because as I understand it, the software-based fixes for the vulnerabillities reduce performance by 5-30%.

Should I buy a new laptop now and hope that in time the performance reduction will be fixed, or should I wait until new hardware go out to the market with the issues at hand addressed at the hardware level?

Looking for a uni laptop for under £700

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 08:25 AM PST

Hi guys, Computer Science undergrad here looking for a decent Uni laptop. I've filled in the form as follows:

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £700 max, would prefer something more along the £600 price range. Purchasing from the UK

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specs are more important than battery, and 2 in 1 would be nice but not essential by any means

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not hugely important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'm looking to run Windows and Linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nothing in particular, although I'm on a Computer Science degree so decent specs are fairly important

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A SSD would be nice, but not essential

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As I mentioned, I'm studying Computer Science so it needs to be able to handle IDE's and multi-tasking efficiently. Refurbished is more than acceptable.

Requesting opinions on direction of next purchase

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 08:15 PM PST

My trusty Lenovo T500 is starting to get a bit long in the tooth, so I've been shopping for something new. I primarily do Visual Studio .Net development, dual boot linux, run a VM or two and plenty of gaming. I've also been considering just doing away with my gaming PC, thereby reducing the amount of hardware I feel compelled to keep current.

My interest has been piqued by the thin ultrabooks (specifically the HP Spectre x360 13"), but I don't know how well those low power CPUs like the i7-7600U can handle gaming. I'm not into the twitch FPS games like Battlefield, CoD, etc., but I do like to maintain high quality visuals in games like Diablo III, X3, Fallout 4, Skyrim, Civ VI and Divinity Original Sin 2. I know the GPU in ultrabooks is pretty weak (relatively speaking), but I am interested in picking up a decent eGPU box and popping a GTX 1070 or better into it. It really all depends on how well the x360 can handle the processor load - not just for gaming, but also for programming.

My other option is to go all out with a full-size 17" laptop like an Alienware 17, MSI GS70 Stealth Pro or the like. I'm not against going this route, but if the Spectre could satisfy my requirements, it is for sure the sexier option. I'd like to hear others' thoughts on this, especially those who have done any gaming on an ultrabook or equivalently powered laptop with an eGPU.

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Buying online in the US. Budget would be anything up to $3000, I suppose - a little more for the right setup.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I don't know how much I would use the convertible feature, but it would be nice to have. I'm looking for good specs and willing to pay for them. Battery life is not a particular concern.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

If I could satisfy my requirements with a thin and light ultrabook, that would be my choice.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows, linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14" max, if I go with an ultrabook, otherwise 17"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming Visual Studio .Net programming Dual booting linux Virtualization

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'm more about high quality visuals than fast-paced combat games these days... Diablo III X3 Fallout 4 Skyrim Civ VI Divinity Original Sin 2

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Trying to decide between thin and light ultrabook or big, heavy full-sized gaming laptop.

Dell Inspiron 7577: Has Anyone Tried Repasting?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 01:43 AM PST

I got the version with the i7-7700HQ, and wow this CPU runs a lot hotter than the i5-7300HQ. Sure, it never thermal throttles on this laptop, but at stock voltage it runs an average of 91 Celsius when subjected to a combined CPU-GPU Aida64 stress test. When undervolted by -120mV, I got it down to a range of 87-89 Celsius, but I was hoping to drop it down further. Naturally, i'm considering thermal repasting.

Only thing really stopping me from trying is that I have no idea how much disassembly is required to get to the heat pipes. Has anyone else tried their hands at repasting the laptop? Did you need to do a total disassembly? What temperature results did you get?

Could this laptop run what i need it to?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 07:53 PM PST

I'm getting a new laptop for my wife and browsed the wiki section of this page, I found the Acer Helios 300 might be what I need to get her. She wants something that can game pretty well, but also works on Adobe programs like photoshop, premiere, illustrator, muse, and audition. She has a external harddrive she keeps all the data on, but I was hoping somebody could confirm that this laptop could run those programs at a good rate.

Any alternatives to mi notebook pro?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 07:06 PM PST

I currently have a specced out XPS15, but HATE the battery life and don't need the performance, as I am about to build a desktop.

I'd like a 15 inch, 8th gen i7, 16gb ram, fast SSD, and MX150, that charges USB-C (trying to shave weight as much as possible in my backpack)

The Mi Notebook Pro is a go so long as I don't find anything similar, I am just worried about warranty service if something happens to it.

    Suggestions plx?

WiFi card in HP 4520s isn't turning on...

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 06:38 PM PST

So I've got an old HP 4520s that I'm breathing new life into for my dad. I've got a new drive and battery, but his biggest complaint is that the WiFi won't turn on. I've tried uninstalling drivers, reinstalling, swapping out a WiFi card (HP doesn't play well with Qualcomm apparently) and nothing has worked. Just as a last-ditch effort to see if this is a software problem, has anyone else encountered this?

Windows device manager says the device is working, and all drivers say they install just fine, but when I try to turn WiFi on it just... doesn't.

Is this a dead card? Or is there something I'm missing?

Moving from HP Chromebook G1 to XPS 9360, a couple of questions

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 05:47 PM PST

    Hi guys,

My current laptop is an HP Chromebook G1, but I'm not finding it especially great at several productivity tasks, mainly the MS Office Android apps that are awkward and feature-limited (no pivot tables !). Also battery life is okay when staying in Chrome but nosedives whenever I launch an Android app. Finally, the the VMWare Horizon ChromeOS app, which I need for work, barely launches, let alone function with any kind of reliability. Seriously, what a shitty app.

So on Boxing Day Dell Canada had a sale, and I got an XPS 9360 with the 8th Gen i7, 16 GB of RAM, a 256 GB m.2 SSD, and the QHD screen. It cost me 1900 CAD down from about 2500 CAD. I learned after the fact that new designs were expected at CES, and I saw them yesterday. I don't regret the purchase, considering getting the same specs on the new design would be hundreds of dollars more expensive and there's nothing groundbreaking about the new model.

I'm planning on using the machine for audio recording (replacing an old desktop computer I have running Sonar 8.5 on a.... Core 2 Duo with a Firewire interface), productivity (Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, Acrobat, SSMS, coding in various apps, statistics in R and SPSS, and remote work with VMWare.

The last time I owned a Dell was back in 2007 when I had an XPS 1330. So, my questions are:

-What is the current crapware situation with Dell laptops and this model specifically ? Is it manageable ? -Are there ongoing issues with this model I should look out for when I get it ? I searched online and found mentions of a coil whine problem, random reboots and "killer" wifi issues, anything else ? -What's the real life battery life you guys get ? -Anything else you think I should know about this laptop ?

TL;DR Chromebook G1 is not the productivity machine I thought it could be. Got an XPS 9360 because it was on sale. Looking for opinions on crapware, ongoing issues, battery life and any other useful info.

HP Laptop Battery Recall 2018: Check To See If Your Model Is Affected

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 01:57 PM PST

    portable Laptop for around 1k

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 05:37 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: The total budget is 1000, but would be willing to stretch it. Country of purchase is the US, and I have a lot of computer stores near me like best buy, microcenter, etc

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer a better battery life, and decent specs. It needs to be portable, and have a good keyboard as well.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness is extremely important, I already have a gaming PC at home, and this laptop is going to be taken with me all day.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'm fine with all of these Operating Systems except for chrome, but I would prefer Windows or Linux over Mac.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Prefered screen size is 13 inches, although I would be fine with a portable 14 or possibly 15 inch laptop. Not ok with 17 inch laptops, though

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Doing some video and photo editing, but this would be rather light, and I would likely move it to my gaming PC to render it. I'll be playing some games like CSGO, but really light ones that would be able to get high framerates with the integrated graphics.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? In games, I really need above 60, but this won't be a problem as the games I play can be easily drived by integrated graphics.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like decent build quality, and a good keyboard. I don't want an optical drive, but a good touchpad would be a welcome addition as well.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This is really a laptop that's about portability over specifications.

I was really interested in the XPS 15 with the 1050, the lenovo yoga 720 15in with the 1050, and the lenovo ideapad 720s 15 and 14 inches with 1050 and mx150 graphics. I'm also interested in the Lenovo yoga 910 and 920 star wars edition
