    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 02:01 AM PST

Finished building my pc yesterday. Got home from work this morning plugged in the PSU and turned it on. Would come on for a split second then back off. GPU fans would spin up but that was it. Started to troubleshoot, unplugged ram and tried to start up again.

    POOF.

Instant fire stemming from the usb power cord attached to the mobo. Quickly turned off, evacuated the PC to the bathtub and now I sit here searching for answers. WTF.

My specs (hopefully some survived) Ryzen 5 1600 Gigabyte ab350 gaming G skill ripjaws 16 gb ddr4 Corsair H60 Gigabyte GTX 650ti Corsair 650w professional series PSU 2x Corsair SP120 fans 90gb Corsair SSD 2TB Seagate HDD

How do i get rid of this

[CSGO] Low(er) FPS / FPS Stutter, tried pretty much everything.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 03:18 AM PST

Hey guys! For the past few months I've been experiencing a really annoying FPS stutter. Prior to this, my FPS used to stay at a flat 300fps, no stutter & it was completely smooth.

    My specs are as follows:- * Zotac 980 Ti AMP Edition * Intel i7 5960x @ 4GHz * 32GB HyperX FURY DDR4 @ 2133MHz (don't ask) * 2TB Samsung 850 EVO SSD (Which CSGO is installed on) * GeForce driver version 388.71

If there are any more specs which would be helpful to know, please let me know!

The stutter keeps my fps ~240/50, but drops to as low as 140. While I've been told that "as long as it's above your refresh rate, you shouldn't see any problems with your FPS", this simply isn't the case. This happens on all maps, not just the new Dust2. This stutter/low fps makes the game unplayable for me as I can't play comfortably with this. I get a consistent 300fps in Overwatch with no dips what so ever.

The amount of times I've tried verifying game cache, uninstalling and reinstalling the game, launching with and without launch options (-novid, -high, +cl_forcepreload 1) etc. Nothing has changed regardless of the presence of them or not. Playing in native resolution, or 640x480, the framerate stays the same. Another thing I have tried is going to the .exe of CSGO and checked the "disable fullscreen optimizations", still no fix.

It would be amazing if someone has a fix for this awful issue, I recently tried to get back into CS after a long break, but this new FPS low / stutter is making me rethink my decision to come back. Many thanks in advance for any help!

Questions about college wifi and how it is monitored

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 03:00 AM PST

Hello, I saw this topic being talked about at r/college for a while, but wanted to ask experts for clarification. I was wondering exactly how the IT department monitors and controls students' use of college wifi. I do know for sure that students' bandwidth and downloads are kept in check, and that technically everything that the student does on college wifi is logged; but exactly how are internet search histories / sites visted etc. monitored, if they are monitored at all? If a student googles something illegal/dangerous- sounding on campus wifi (ex: asking questions about committing terrorism, etc) how fast would the school find out and respond? Does the IT department have some kind of filtering system where they can check for potentially dangerous situations like that?
Have wondering about this a while now. Thank you!

    Am I paranoid?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 12:40 AM PST

I was trying to find streams for a TV show online and couldn't end up finding one, but I did have to close a lot of pop ups etc in the process. I ended up clicking on quite a few sketchy sites. Next thing I know, my wifi turns off. I go to run Avast, and it tells me that I'm in danger and I need to restart immediately. I restart, and have no connection still. Avast won't run.

Suddenly, wifi comes back. I run rkill, malwarebytes, adwcleaner, and avast, and nothing comes up. Is there something I'm missing?

PC/Games Crashing on New PC Build / Video_Scheduler_Internal_Error

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 08:12 PM PST

Hey all, I just built a PC with the following parts.

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD - Ryzen 3 1200 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor $109.99 @ Amazon
    Motherboard *ASRock - AB350M Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $59.99 @ Newegg
    Memory Corsair - Vengeance LPX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-3000 Memory $113.99 @ Amazon
    Storage Samsung - 960 EVO 250GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive $127.89 @ OutletPC
    Storage Western Digital - Blue 2TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive $62.29 @ SuperBiiz
Video Card *Asus - GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB Phoenix Video Card $167.98 @ Newegg
Case *Cooler Master - N200 MicroATX Mini Tower Case $32.98 @ Newegg
Power Supply *SeaSonic - 520W 80+ Bronze Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply $34.90 @ Newegg

After two evenings of good performance, I started playing Rust on Steam. After about a minute of gameplay, I noticed the video froze, but I could still control the character and could hear the proper audio playing. I believe I had the GeForce Game Ready Driver 388.00 installed.

I updated the GPU driver to 388.71 and saw a blue screen with a video_scheduler_internal_error. This error happens both when I attempt to play a game and sporadically on startup.

Has anyone else experienced these issues on a new build?

Help fixing an Alienware 17 laptop .

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 09:24 PM PST

I just bought an Alienware 17 R3 for $200 from a buddy who said it was broken. He told me that he couldnt get it to boot up past BIOS even with the USB recovery drive he made for it. The USB recovery drive he gave me with it didn't seem to work when I tried it.

I used a recovery drive from one of the AW 15s I have at my house and now it seems to be working fine. Only wierd thing I have found is when looking at the system data and specs, it seems to say this laptop is an AW15 r2 like my other laptop is.

The question I have is with the recovery drive from a different computer, what does that do excactly and how do I "fix" it.

PC won't start after Windows updated.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 08:58 PM PST

Hi! I was wondering if anyone can help fix my computer.

My PC has been running for a couple of years without problems. Yesterday Windows updated and it asked to be restarted. I declined because I was looking some stuff up.

A couple of minutes later, my PC suddenly shut off. It didn't go through the normal shut down sequence, it just turned off. I turned it back on and it showed the normal Windows update percentage and I was able to log in.

I few minutes of use it just suddenly shut off again.

Now, when I press the power button it will just turn on the fans for a brief moment and shut off.

I read a couple of guides online and it said it might be a defective PSU. I bought a new one and it's still doing the same thing.

Windows 7 - one USB port won't work in Windows but works in BIOS/Safe Mode

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 09:56 PM PST

Just this one port. I've uninstalled the USB drivers, tried unplugging the computer and pressing the power button to "discharge" all the electricity (idk what it's called), replugging, and turning off selective suspend

. Every other port works fine, it's just this one port. Very strange. Any suggestions?

It worked before, then I unplugged my mouse (which was usually plugged into that port) while the computer was in sleep mode and didn't plug it back in for three days.

HP EliteBook 2570p not powering on by any mean.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 03:49 AM PST

Two days ago my laptop died because of 0% battery and never came back. If I try to plug the charger, every LED turns on but the pc remains shut off even if I try holding/pressing/bashing the power button. There's the battery LED flashing in amber, and it seems the battery isn't getting charged even if I plug it in (I can see its level with a button on it and it's constantly 0%).

I already tried everything: connecting AC without battery (only the pc), reseating RAM, holding the power button to discharge static... the pc seems stuck in this "LEDs on, pc off, ANY button irresponsive" state.

Now I left it off, with the battery completely unplugged from the laptop itself for some hours and I don't know what to do.

UNFIXABLE Gaming Performance issue on Ryzen 1700X PC, rage inducing

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 03:40 AM PST

    My Specs: https://i.imgur.com/BjpAgoq.png

    This issue is rage inducing.

I play a lot of video games, I also record them with shadowplay (instant replay) usually.

I had an i5 processor in the past and had terrible FPS issues, the frames would be WAY below what they should be.

I was always fully updated on my drivers. I thought it could possibly be because my CPU wasn't powerful enough, so I upgraded to a ryzen 1700x. When playing games I use under 20% of both my CPU & GPU at load.

That made almost no difference, In games like Overwatch or Fortnite it would under preform. I bought a cooler master 212 with an AM4 bracket to try and keep temps low but that solved no issue.

I reinstalled windows & updated every driver I could. I also have xbox & telemetry features in windows 10 disabled.

I tried unplugging one of my two monitors, I tried closing as many programs as possible, I have start-up programs to a minimum.

If anyone could point me in the right direction to diagnose this issue I would appreciate it so much. thanks

Win10 PC freeze at login screen when first turned on. All OK on soft reboot. What is wrong?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 03:37 AM PST

Hello, I've got a PC that when first turned on it loads to the windows 10 login screen then freezes after 1 or 2 seconds. If I'm quick enough I can move the mouse a little or type the first characters of my password before the freeze. A soft reboot (reboot button on my pc case) 'solves' this problem because windows 10 now loads as normal.

Sfc/scannow from the system prompt says all system files are ok. Sigverif doesn't bring up any errors either. I've used snappy driver to update my drivers.

I don't know how to fix this. Any help or guidance is much appreciated.

Possibly unrelated issue: I can't install any windows updates because it freezes at 33%. A reboot rolls back the update.

Also, my chrome won't shut off properly either, when i close chrome and reopen it, all my tabs are still open.

    Hi,

I currently have my TV setup as second monitor which I use for watching Youtube and Netflix.

When I play games I do not need my second monitor. I am lead to believe the second monitor would affect the computers performance.

I know by going to the display settings I can disconnect it aswell as pressing windows + p to switch through modes. I was hoping I could automate it.

    Thank you for any help!

Seeking advice on creating a 'how-to' guide for parents.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 03:24 AM PST

Hey! So basically I am migrating from the UK to Canada this month and one of my parents is slightly computer illiterate. By this I mean they can turn on their laptop, login, open Chrome and a few applications but other than that they can do nothing.

As a leaving gift I thought it would be nice to create a how-to guide detailing all the steps to do things like skype, e-mail, and various other things that will allow them to stay in contact more easily.

I am looking for help and advice on what to include as I feel I may be missing more minute details such as navigation, right-click features, key bindings, etc..

I appreciate any help! Thank You!

    Description of problem

So when I start a game (GW2 , LoL, Minecraft Story Mode) my main monitor goes repeatedly black for a few seconds. GPU workload Audio (from the game) and other sources are not affected, my second monitor also works fine no problem what so ever.

Now comes the interesting part. After a restart everything works just fine. So for example: When I come back home from college, start my PC and then eventually (not necessarily immediately) start GW2 the problem reoccurs. Restarting my PC resolves this problem until the next day.

My guesses are that either GPU turns itself off because of overload (GPU malfunction) or it doesn't get enough power (PSU or cablemod malfunction). Remains the question: why does the problem disappear after a restart and why did a clean Windows installation solve it for 10 days (software bug?)

EDIT: I just started watching a Simpsons episode in full screen, and for the first time it also happenede here. Without the GPU workload going wild though. So it could have something to do with full screen applications?
