Are there any good Mobile MMOs out there?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 08:32 PM PST

I'm at the point of where I searched and tried enough mobile mmos to already tell if a mobile mmo is bad just by the game's icon. I'm actually losing hope in finding a "good mobile mmo" out there. I'm here to ask you guys for help

Pretty much all mobile mmos I found will fit into the checklist of desolation:

    1. The auto play button - This is a big one that is an instant turn off. I get that its hard for new players to navigate the world, but have these devs heard of a direction indicator arrow or a dotted path overlay? And most importantly, automating your combat? Whats the point of even playing, ANY GAME that adds an auto button is shooting itself in the foot. Notable games that do this: AxE (this game literally vibrates your phone when human input is required), Tera M, Linage 2, basically any Korean mmo that looks good in the thumbnails.

    2. UI Clustered with ads - every mobile i see is guilty of this. The phone screen is small, and yes it is hard to place every ability, skill and attack button perfectly, but clustering your screen with "huur duur buy my beginner package" is just adding to the problem of having a bad skill casting system. Snail Game's mmos are very guilty of this, but pretty much every mmo will have a small menu with every option of purchasing gems possible.

    3. Horrible character creation/gender lock - who would want to keep playing mmo game where they aren't even satisfied with the character they created? I'm pretty sure its not too hard to add some extra hair models, maybe have variable color on the hair as well. This issue isn't very apparent, until you close the game after your first time. You don't want to play as who ever the hell the game forced you to create. Order and Chaos 2 was laughable, each character had exactly 2 hairstyles and a set color pallet, I expected that hairstyle bar to SCROLL but nope it was 2. I had a good chuckle there tho.

    4. Tiny world - The only reason I go back to keep playing mmos is because of the feeling of a vast open world out there that i have not explored. For example Runescape, Black Desert and WoW all give me that feeling. However on mobile games, 3 hours of gameplay, and you already discovered the entire world. Taichi Panda 3 honestly was good until i discovered the world map was literally 1 area. No idea why the game is still 1gb+ tho. This also applies to extremely instanced combat such as Dragon Project and Daybreak Legends

Now i may sound like a picky grinch by listing out all of these but I do have some honorable mentions.

    1. Sword Art Online Integral Factor - No auto, updating world, amazing character creation, clean UI. Too bad its region locked to japan, but even with qooapp its unstable since its new, and breaks on most devices (namely mine)

    2. Albion Online and Adventure Quest World - well i mean... it IS a PC port

    3. Vendetta Online - its a spaceship mmo thats based off EVE Online, really good and fun but appealing only to certain people.

And to balance it off, to prevent disappointing suggestions in the comments, the dishonorable mentions (not even list format since theres too many):

Dragon Revolt, Daybreak Legends, Lineage 2, Taichi Panda 3, Crusaders of Light, AxE, Tera M, Dragon Project, Sword of Romance, Sword of Shadows (good naming huh) Age of Wushu, Chaos Legends, Order and Chaos 1 & 2, Legacy of Discord (dont even get started on this one lol), FlyFF, Blade and Rings (litterally advertises their auto button), TORAM (mostly for its control scheme).

Now reddit, are there any good mobile mmos out there, or have the mmo scene completely lost hope on mobile? I hope there are some hidden gems.

4 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 37)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 06:29 AM PST

Welcome to 2018, fellow Android Gamers! :)

During the holidays, my mic broke, but I got a new one by Tuesday, so that's why there are only 4 games this week. To make up for that, I made a video about my thoughts on the future of my channel.

With that said, let's dive straight into the tl;dr rekommandations of the 4 best games I've played this week!

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 37 weeks ago here.

As always, the games games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    2018 here we come!

Epic Conquest [Game Size: 87 MB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Indie - Offline

    tl;dr review:

With a light-hearted story, a great combat system, interesting monsters and bosses with unique abilities, and lots of items to craft, Epic Conquest is one of the better singleplayer offline-playable 3D RPGs I've played in a long time.

Apart from the fun gameplay, the monetization is great too, with no forced ads, and the biggest IAP sitting at $15 (giving us 600 rubies, which can be exchanged for gold to speed up the game, although gold hasn't been an issue for me so far).

Runestone Keeper [Game Size: 130 MB] (free)

    Genre: Roguelike / Top-down / Indie - Offline

    tl;dr review:

A very well-made indie roguelike RPG where you travel down endless tiled dungeon floors, uncovering a new tile on every click, picking up items, and defeating monsters through a simple turn-based combat system.

At every death, there's a chance to buy new items or upgrade your character, making for a nice feeling of progression.

The monetization is great, focusing on a few $2 IAP to double exp or quadruple gold gained in each level, as well as $1 IAPs to unlock new character.

    Google Play: Here

    First Impressions / Review: Here

Warfair [Total Game Size: 195 MB] (free)

    Genre: Strategy / Real-time PVP - Online

    tl;dr review: [BETA]

Warfair is a game I wanted to hate, but in the realm of real-time PVP strategy games, I believe the game actually adds a fresh spin with its turn-based control of your units, allowing you to change where on the playing field each unit should move after each turn.

Monetization happens through loot boxes, which you have to wait to unlock, or pay to unlock immediately. On the bright side, however, there is nothing actually limiting your play-time (such as an energy system).

Lastly, I appreciate the frequent developer video updates and attempt to build a community around the game (which it definitely needs to succeed!).

    Google Play: Here

    First Impressions / Review: Here

DESERTOPIA [Total Game Size: 119 MB] (free)

Genre: Simulation / Relaxing - Offline

    tl;dr review:

A relaxing and unique simulation game where we control the rain on an island, watering the desert to make vegetation grow and animals appear (there are 50+ animals to discover).

But nothing lives forever and animals drink water and eat vegetations, so if we forget to come back for a few days, our island WILL turn into a desert again and the animals go extinct.

There's lots more to the game (random encounters, events etc.), and the monetization is no hindrance for playing (although power, which is required to make it rain is sold for gems, which can be bought for real life money or gained for free in-game to speed the game up).

Real-time TCG Nova Blitz in beta for Android (already fully released on Steam)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 02:00 PM PST

I've been getting pretty in to this game since I got it on Steam, and just got in to the mobile beta (though unfortunately my current phone is an iPhone for the time being, so I'm on the iOS one). Definitely recommend others to jump on and try it if they're looking for a different cardgame that plays quicker than Hearthstone (shorter rope, and players make their orders at the same time each turn). Not that many people seem to know about it yet, and since it is cross platform, we can all play it together if more start to try it out.

Hope to see more people online soon!

Question about supporting gamepads as a developer

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 08:50 AM PST

I'm planning to add gamepad support for my games, but my question is do Android users prefer fully functional UI elements as well? For example, does the user need to be able to navigate through the menus of a game with a controller, or would they just use touch screen and then take over with a controller once gameplay has started?

    Help using Tincore Keymapper?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 12:34 PM PST

Hi, so I'm trying to use a rooted S8 with various controllers using Tincore Keymapper, but when I try to map a button, or analogue stick, a mouse cursor just comes on screen and moves around.

Does anyone have any idea why it's doing this? I've searched online but haven't found any solutions for this problem.

I published my first game, 2 Player Mirror!

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 11:26 AM PST

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ie.darajava.mirrorfree

    Hey guys,

Here is the first game I ever published on the play store! I put a lot of work into it, and I know it's still not perfect, but I'd really appreciate it if you gave it an honest (maybe not TOO honest :P ) review, or gave me some more detailed feedback here. It's a 2 player only game, so play it with someone else.

If you really like it then you can buy the paid version here. It's just the exact same game but without ads for the moment.

    Thanks!

I've been looking into getting the full version but since the full version is unlocked in the trial one it's a bit difficult to catch if it goes on sale or not.
