Quick question about re installing Windows Posted: 28 Dec 2017 01:38 PM PST I just bought a new laptop that comes with windows 10, and I'd like to reformat and fresh install windows to get rid of all the bloatware and shit that comes pre-installed on it. I know I can get the windows 10 installer from their website and format a flash drive to boot from. What I'm wondering is about the registration code for my license. If I go into >my computer>properties (where it shows my cpu info etc.) at the bottom of the page it shows a product code. Can I use that product code as my windows registration/license number? Or is that number already "used" when the factory Windows is installed. If I reinstall windows would I be losing my included windows registration that came with my purchase? Or can I reuse that product code? [link] [comments]
Taskbar will not pop up when Windows Edge is open. (Win 10/Surface Laptop) Posted: 28 Dec 2017 01:15 PM PST For some reason after the update, I cannot unhide my taskbar when an Internet window is open. I have it hidden on the bottom of the screen. It used to work to where I'd bring my mouse to the bottom of the screen it would pop up, now it does not. It only does this with WE. It's annoying and I am having trouble finding ways to fix it online, so sorry I have to ask this here. Also, side thing with the new update it installed some new virtual reality crap my computer isn't compatible to use. Why would they install it and how do I get rid of it? [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Dec 2017 06:24 PM PST Usually happens after a restart or boot up. Basically some windows process uses almost 100% of disk, whether it be System, Anti-Malware Executable, SoftThinks Agent Service, Superfetch, or a number of other programs. This makes me lag and drop frames when I try to play games so I need to wait about an hour for the processes to stop. There's a lot of "solutions" online for some of these processes, but they all work initially then get reverted back. Has anyone found a permanent solution? [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Dec 2017 11:35 AM PST So I recently discovered that Windows' File History doesn't backup my music folder any more. Annoyed by this and finding no problem in "Settings > Update > Backup" nor in "Control Panel > File History", nor in the eventlog, i decided to check the config files: It has excluded a few other OneDrive folders too, but not all of them. And "appdata" (that isn't surprising, File History doesn't like to read files that are in use). And various dot files from my user folder, but not all of them. Why are they automaticly adding those excludes? What decides which folders should be marked as "silently excluded"? The music folder weren't excluded the last time i checked the config files. My best guess for OneDrive is that they did it to fix this issue, which i remember was a thing for a while. If so.. Well.. I'm gonna need something that works. Any recommendations for an alternative to File History? Preferably something that runs without annoying me with notifications nor takes up resources while i'm using the computer. Silent tools are the best tools. [link] [comments]
Pictures from next room overd computer showing up on mine? Posted: 28 Dec 2017 01:13 PM PST And it was open on my screen? Is that some sort of new setting in the new windows? [link] [comments]
Moved from Mac to Windows...Looking for... Posted: 28 Dec 2017 01:12 AM PST So macOS comes with hot corners which enables the user to launch small action by sliding the cursor to the corner of a display...Was wanting to know if their was some third party app built for Windows that did the same. Posted: 28 Dec 2017 10:42 AM PST I wanted to free up some room on my C: drive so I moved the 'My Documents' folder to another partition, not realizing I needed to create a new sub-folder. I assumed the move utility (something about symbolic locations?) would recreate the original folder structure. Nope. Now I have numerous folders and files 'loose' in the root of E:. Is there any easy way to reverse this? Failing that, is there a simple way to put everything back into a folder while still maintaining the structure (for example, video games can still locate save files)? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Dec 2017 08:07 PM PST I'm using the EaseUS todo backup software. When I go into the backup options I am presented with two options. One is a "system backup" and one is a "file backup". At first I just assumed that the system backup would simply only backup the essential Windows files. However it didn't, it backed up almost the entirety of the occupied space on my primary drive. And going into the files themselves everything seems intact exactly. However, I there is a large disparity between the sizes of the file backup and the file backup. The file backup appears about 3gb larger than the system one. Also, the size of each is weird in the properties. For example this is the size of one of the back ups 215 GB (231,426,117,632 bytes), so what is the actual size then? I want to make sure that I will never lose data again. So I'm looking to make this backup a complete image of my entire file system for my primary drive. [link] [comments]
Have a free upgrade to Windows 10, but no windows OS Posted: 28 Dec 2017 11:51 AM PST Hey everyone, I'm looking to install windows, and I happen to have a free upgrade to Windows 10. However, I don't have an existing copy. Would it work with some of the free versions of Windows/are older OS's still being sold on the cheap? Thanks for your help [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Dec 2017 10:38 AM PST I've had a Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Mouse for the past two years and never had problems with it, until a few weeks ago when the back button got stuck, so I stopped using it as it was getting quite annoying. Today I tried using it again and, while it's no longer activating the back button randomly as before, the cursor is only being registered in specific windows. So for example if I'm using Word it works fine, but I can't click on the taskbar or minimize the program.. it only works within Word. The same happens when I try to use the trackpad instead (on my Surface Pro 4) when the mouse is still plugged in. Anyone ever heard about this issue or know how to solve it? [link] [comments]

Disable automatic system updates completely? Posted: 28 Dec 2017 04:57 PM PST Very frequently I get a little popup trying to install Windows updates on the right corner of my screen, asking me to update things. Gives me the option to schedule it for a half hour from now, an hour, three hours, etc, but no option to not update. I have processes going that are going to take many hours, and frankly don't want to be bothered, now or any time in the near future. Thanks guys. [link] [comments]

is there a faster snippet program than the Windows one? Posted: 28 Dec 2017 03:32 PM PST I want to be able to map the snipping function to holding down the right mouse button and then dragging around the area that I want to copy, and to copy that to the clipboard. [link] [comments]
Windows feature that actually works. Posted: 28 Dec 2017 01:45 AM PST Have you ever lost your boot file and been completely unable to restore with install media? I'm talking about Windows 7 or 8. It happened to me on both versions. Not sure how I had it happen, but on both occasions it was a loss. Used Ubuntu live to copy all my important things, and reinstalled. The installer said it couldn't find any installed Windows instances. My computer was acting up and I had some annoying side effects. I decided for shits n giggles to delete the boot. Clicked restart and I'll be damned, windows 10 start up repair fixed itself. First time I've ever seen this feature work since 7. Just wanted to share my experience. That's all. Kernel security check failure (pc crashes) Posted: 28 Dec 2017 03:12 PM PST Hey. So I used to sometimes share internet to my pc from my phone (have better download on phone, so used it to download games etc) and it always worked fine. Today I got a new phone (one plus 5) and whenever i try to share the internet (with the charger, not wireless) my pc completely crashes and i get the kernel security check failure error or whatever that is. I can plug my phone in just fine without my pc crashing, but whenever i start sharing the internet my pc just crashes. Any idea how to fix? [link] [comments]

Looking for some help with the pen (SP4) Posted: 28 Dec 2017 09:59 AM PST Vaio duo 13 user here. I recently bought a surface pen (surface pro 4) and decided to give it a try. The feeling is much better than my vgp-std2 but there is a problem. The buttons on my surface pen have reverse functionality. Even though I managed to connect the surface pen with bluetooth to my tablet and managed to make the clicks on the top button launch applications , they have reverse functionality aka the top button works as a right click button and the side button works as an eraser. Do you happen to know any workarounds? Thanks for your time! P.S. The autohotkey doesn't seem to recognize #F20 and #F19 keys as valid inputs which means I'll have to find the key mappings from a vaio duo pen. [link] [comments]
