Opening programs (randomly) pops up a "screenshot" (so to speak) of my desktop from earlier in day Posted: 02 Dec 2017 08:14 PM PST I have Win 7 (64). My rig is just 11 months old now. So everything is still newish. So very short version is when I go to start any program my screen will be replaced by what my screen looked like earlier in the day. Sort of like a screenshot in time, I can't click anything mind you. Although I can move my cursor. It only does it for about 5 seconds then returns to my current screen. (link to screen before/after below so you can see what I mean). Since this happened I've replaced my monitor, video card, motherboard and power supply. Doesn't seem to fix it. I've ran virus scans using things like Malwarebytes, Spybot and MSE. Nothing turned up. This only leaves my CPU or RAM. Do you think its either of those? Or maybe the hard drive? I can tell you when I check the SMART/Health of my hard drives they are all at 95%-100%. No errors turn up. And ram wise I did run some memory test when you restart windows, I let it run for about an hour but nothing turned up. So not sure what else to do. I realize reformatting is an option, but I want to make sure its not hardware related or some easy fix first before going the reformat route. Just because its a pain. Though if I had to can I just reinstall windows over itself so that I don't lose anything? Again, this is a last ditch thing if I have no other choice and its not my hardware. How to restore Windows desktop layout from Windows Image Backup? Posted: 02 Dec 2017 06:28 PM PST Reposted From: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/7h236g/how_to_restore_windows_desktop_layout_from/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/7h04cd/how_to_restore_windows_desktop_layout_from/ I have a Windows 10 laptop that had it's desktop layout lost and would like to know how to restore it from an old backup without restoring the entire system. I have extracted the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\1\Desktop] registry key from it but applying the .reg file to the laptop and restarting it does nothing. Is there a feature or software that allows me to have multiple Desktop Layouts at once? Posted: 02 Dec 2017 05:08 PM PST I know about the Virtual Desktop thing added in Windows 10, but that only allows me to make some soft of folder for windows. What I want for example is in this one desktop, I have all these mess and documents scattered around, and in the other, I have a much cleaner and organized layout of icons. Now I know I should just probably sort my desktop. But living with 4 people using the same account doesn't help. So what I desire is something to easily switch to just to cure the eyesore of seeing a bunch of documents scattered around. [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Dec 2017 04:13 PM PST I don't know exactly when this started. Last night I tried to open up Google Chrome and it stopped responding. So I opened up task manager to close it, only to find out my entire PC was frozen. So I decided to shut it down and go to bed. After I tried to get on it today, before I could even log in it said it had started to repair the C: drive. That goes smoothly, and I try to log in but I receive the message "We can't sign into your account". It then logs me into a temporary account. The message itself says to restart your computer/sign out, and I've done both several times to no avail. I've tried everything on the following links: https://ugetfix.com/ask/how-to-fix-we-cant-sign-into-your-account-error-on-windows/ Any help? [link] [comments]
Fall Creator's Update Not Recognizing ASUS Network Cards (Day 42) Posted: 02 Dec 2017 01:29 AM PST Hello everyone this is an ongoing problem with the Windows Fall Creator's Update 1709 and it's compatibility with ASUS Network cards (so far it's PCE-AC68 and PCE-AC56). For some, this issue has persisted for over a month with no fixes or announcements from any one of the corporations involved. I just wanted to make this statement here because it only has some traction on the ASUS forms and I haven't been reading a lot about it anywhere else. So the issue is that after updating to 1709 the network cards are failing to start (personally, I am receiving a Code 10 and yes, I've tried messing with settings on the computer, uninstalling/reinstalling drivers and nothing has worked). I can also tell that the problem is specifically with 1709 because when I rolled back that update, it recognized the network card without a problem. (The only reason why I'm still angry is because Windows basically always updated every time I turned it on, so I would be forced to roll back the update every single time, which was tedious and frustrating). One thing that was brought up in the ASUS forums was that most of the machines with this problem had AMD processors, whilst a minority were Intel, so that may be a factor as well. (I too have an AMD processor/mobo). On top of that, someone theorized it may have something to do with the fact that the ASUS wifi cards contain "Broadcom" chipsets. I don't know if the Broadcom chipset thing is the main issue, because if it is, it would make it harder for me and others to find other PCIE wifi cards as replacements since it seems like all the good ones use Broadcom to my knowledge. Now, I'll admit, I don't know a lot about computers in terms of how they work. I just wanted to bring up this issue again though since it's still affecting me and other people and much like them, want the issue fixed as soon as possible. I'm not sure if I should just have hope that things will be better by 2018 or try buying a new network card, since the USB one I have has occasional connectivity issues. For more information and proof that the issue is still going on, here are links to my thread I made a month ago, along with links to the ASUS forum. https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/78d2ps/fall_creators_update_not_recognizing_pcie_wifi/ https://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20171022013400424&board_id=11&model=PCE-AC68&page=1&SLanguage=en-us [link] [comments]
Question about program files on another drive and hdd usage Posted: 02 Dec 2017 03:18 PM PST Sorry for the wall of text. So when I built my computer my friend made a program files x86 folder as well as other windows folders. Such as delivery optimization, windowsapps, wudownloadcache. And others I can't remember. I had gone into safe mode and deleted these folders. I had an issue deleting windows apps folder I had to change ownership of the folder and it was a pain. The delivery optimization folder keeps showing up every once in a while. It keeps creating itself. Now is there anything I can do to address this? I've noticed that my x drive hdd will go up to 100% and the y and c drive won't. I don't have any programs running that I have installed to it running anything substantial. I don't know why it goes up to 100%. Is windows trying to access files that aren't on the x drive anymore? Was something edited in the registry to make these program files? Just for clarification I have a c drive where the os is. An x drive where I have steam and battlenet installed. As well as like driver booster etc. And just a steam library on the y drive. Thanks for your help. And I'll be happy answer any questions you have. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Dec 2017 02:25 PM PST Hi everyone. I just received a 4k TV that I am trying to use as a monitor for my Windows 8 PC. I changed the resolution to 2160p, but the items on the screen were too small to practically see. So, I went to "Make items and text larger or smaller," set it to 150%, and signed out. Upon signing back in, nothing changes. No matter how many times I do it. Can someone tell me why this won't work? I'm so frustrated. [link] [comments]
Cortana search box turned white? Posted: 02 Dec 2017 08:20 AM PST Hi everyone :3 Ever since the latest windows update, my cortana search box that's located on the task bar turned white. It used to set a matching color to the task bar itself, but now it's just bright, annoying white. Is someone else here experiencing this? is there any known fix? Thanks! [link] [comments]

Desktop screen blacked out after update Posted: 02 Dec 2017 01:56 PM PST Just finished installing a new update today and when I restarted the laptop I go to the log in page, out my password, get to my desktop and within seconds everything goes black. Pressed the power button to shut down and yet again it happens. Any suggestions? This happened a few months ago but completely forgot how I fixed it. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Dec 2017 07:04 AM PST I want to ban some websites on my computer and not allow myself to remove them. I know I could lock/password the file with a password I do not know but if I find more websites I won't able to add it to the list. Is there a way to do this? I am banning via the hosts file. Windows Subsystem for Linux - How do I avoid duplicate app installations? Posted: 02 Dec 2017 12:53 PM PST Ok, so I abandoned Windows for Linux a few years back, but WSL is convincing me to give Windows another shot. My main reason for going to Linux is I'm a software engineer, and I prefer the Linux environment by far over the Windows one. However, Windows has way more polish than any Linux Distro I've run, so... yeah, I'm looking at it again. Anyway, time for my question. Let's use Git as an example. For IntelliJ to detect Git, I need to install it in my Windows environment. However, to use it in WSL, I would need to install it in my linux environment. Now let's talk about the Java JDK (I'm a Java dev, in case no one noticed). To run IntelliJ, I need to install the JDK on windows. But to run something like maven from WSL, I would need to install it in my linux environment too. This is at least how I think it would work. Is this the case? Is there any way to avoid this kind of double-program-installing? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Someone used my information to take a Windows 10 Configuration Certification Posted: 02 Dec 2017 12:21 PM PST Pretty much what the title says. Checked my email yesterday and saw that I was given an Invoice for a certification test (They used a voucher so I was not charged anything) and that the test was on Dec. 1 and they ordered the test on Nov. 30. Some IT Learning Center set up a test with all my information (idk if were allowed to post the companies name). The person that actually took the test passed the one part of the cert. Ive tried contacting both Microsoft and PearsonVUE, which neither of them were cooperating in getting the exam canceled since it was less than 24hrs before the test. Which is funny since the exam was scheduled less than 24hrs before it was taken. Also I am unable to get a hold of the company that used my information. I'm totally at a loss of what to do here. Any help would be appriciated, also if this is the wrong subreddit to post in, letting me know where to go would be great. [link] [comments]

laptop freezing on lock screen after sleeping: help? Posted: 02 Dec 2017 11:15 AM PST I do not know what to do. Whenever my Asus TP501U laptop is asleep for a long period of time (5 hours, for example), it will be frozen on the lock screen when woken up, and I have to force-restart it each time. This problem doesn't occur when it's asleep for short periods of time, and it seems to happen more often when I close the lid versus leaving it open. Any ideas? It didn't do this when I first got it (online Best Buy in May). [link] [comments]

Latest update fucked up my PC display? Posted: 02 Dec 2017 02:32 AM PST So Windows forced me to do an update last night, and ever since that happened, my monitor display has gotten very, very bad. The words are blurry the black values are all over the place etc. For reference, this is how my font in some places looks. https://imgur.com/WvydlpM What is going on, how do I fix this?
