Was offered a 2013 MacBook Pro for $200... should I?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 12:21 PM PST

I need a laptop, and only really need it for Microsoft Word, internet browsing, and streaming movies. The laptop is in good working condition, and $200 seems like a fair price... should I do it?? Thank you!

laptop for sister who is historically hard on computers. up to $600, casual web use but must be capable enough for occasional video and sound editing. Also, how is the stock A/V software these days in Windows?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 08:22 AM PST

My sister has had a rough couple of years, and is reduced to doing all of her computing on a low-end smartphone.

My father and I are both tech-literate people, but we've been out of the PC world for a while. The ideal machine for her would probably be a Macbook Pro, in part because she'd have iMovie and Garage Band, but budget doesn't allow it. Also, she might drop it, and we'd rather she has something a little less... nice

In the past, she's had a tendency to really beat on computers. I don't know how it happens, but her old aluminum Macbook had a lot of dents before she retired it, although it did somehow manage to keep chugging until it was obsolete.

So we're nearly settled on This Acer Aspire E 15. The SSD seems like a smart decision for somebody who drops their computer a lot, and it has a decent GPU and updated CPU which should power through any (light) video work that she might be doing.

Are there any other machines I should be looking at, or does this sound like the best one for the money?

EDIT: Also, does Windows have decent included video/audio editing software? I know she'd be good with Garage Band and iMovie, so something comparable is fine.

    Waiting for a laptop

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 12:05 PM PST

At this current state, I don't have a laptop or anything to pc game on. I've been looking at the 7577 which is $900 at this moment. Since CES is coming up in the next month, is it worth it to wait until after to buy a laptop, or should I just buy it now?

Surface laptop or HP envy 13

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 11:21 AM PST

It's between those two. They both have i5 8gb ram. The surface has better screen which is important as I'll be doing Photoshop/Lightroom but only has one USB 3.0 (type a) whereas the envy had two USB C and one type a. The envy also has an mx150 GPU. They are both the same price so that's not a factor, is the screen calibration worth it?

Does apple also slow down their laptops? Is there a way to test?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 10:48 AM PST

So I'm not sure if this is the best sub to ask this question but with all that is going on with Apple slowing down their old phones because of "battery" related issues I can't help but feel like my 2012 macbook is running like garbage ever since some of their last updates. Is there any way to test this? Does anyone else have similar experience? I feel like we've known Apple does this kind of stuff for along time so it is probably my own fault for updating but I felt like my hardware was still pretty decently specced that it should not be experiencing this kind of slow down. It was also kept in pristine condition and ultimately isn't used everyday or abused by any means.

    New laptop advice/recommendations

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 10:29 AM PST

My (not-that-)old laptop just gave up the ghost, and since it seems to be a broken motherboard, I'm thinking I'm just going to get a new one. I haven't done a lot of research yet but figured you folks that know your stuff could get me pointed in the right direction.

Things I know I'm looking for:

    -13-15 inch screen

-Not too heavy (probably 3.5 or so lbs or less)

    -Minimum 256 gigs

-Probably discrete graphics, though I'm not picky about what (I won't use it for significant gaming, for which I have a desktop, but perhaps something light here and there, and occasionally need to do some light photo/video editing, though, again, not massive)

    -Probably 8/16 GB RAM

-Not a dealbreaker, but a USB-C port would be nice

    -Windows

-Would like solid build quality. One of my last computer's downfalls was that it was a bit lacking there, I think. It was a custom build Sager. Components were nice, but I was unimpressed by the build quality and how easy it was for things to start denting and chipping off, hinges breaking a bit, etc. It was also big and heavy, which didn't help in that regard.

-Obviously one of the big things is form factor, but I'm honestly not really sure on that. I've never had a touchscreen or hybrid before, so I'm not used to that and I'm not positive if I wouldn't use it or I would get used to it and find it great. Girlfriend recently got a Surface Book and likes it for how she uses it. Not sure, though. I am pretty sure that if I did go that route, I would want one with an actual keyboard that either folds back or detaches as opposed to something that is more tablet than laptop with a 3rd party plugin keyboard or a soft keyboard a la the Surface. So, there's a starting point.

-No firm budget, but I'd obviously like to not spend more money than I need to, and am trying to kind of figure out what I need to spend to get what I'm looking for. Not really looking to spend $2000.

If this leaves things too vague, or, alternately, there are things that come close to this, feel free to suggest or ask questions and I'm happy to refine. Most of the things aren't necessarily 100% set in stone if every other requirement is met (though I wouldn't, for instance, consider an 8 lb. laptop).

    Cheers!

Hey guys i dont know a thing about laptops but i do know i want to play some pc games. My budget's is something close to a 1000 bucks. I dont really care about the design or the brand. The weight doesnt really matter too. I dont really need anything fancy but i m going to spend a lot of time on it so a long lasting battery would be nice. GPU's memory clock speed got locked a 405mhz somehow. Need Help.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 05:35 AM PST

My laptop 1070's memory clock speed got locked at 405 mhz somehow. Because of this fps in games and bench marks are all terrible. I didn't do anything in any settings. I tried several versions' geforce drivers but the problem is still here. The only thing that I would call abnormal before this problem showed up, is that I tried to play Wolfenstein II. It required a driver newer than 388.00 and mine was 378.92. So a warning window showed up. I don't know if this caused the problem. Thanks for any advice!

    Help with laptop choice

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 08:11 AM PST

I'm a high school student who's getting ready to go to college, but I need to buy a laptop. I'm mostly going to be doing everyday things, video editing, and music production, and my options are pretty much down to the 14" Razer Blade (with the 4K screen) or the 15" MacBook Pro. The specs are pretty similar, but I'm not sure which one is better for me. I will most likely be using the Adobe suite (and Ableton) but if I have a MacBook then I might be more inclined to use FCPX (as well as Logic X). Can you guys offer any help with this decision? Thanks

Can anyone recommend a decent gaming laptop?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 07:04 AM PST

Ideally it would be even cheaper, and lightweight so I can easily transport it and use it for work. It would be primarily for work but it'd be nice to be able to play some games at a decent level, particularly League of Legends. I'm not a serious gamer though at all but my last laptop died if I even tried to start up word.

So far I've found one that looks good but just a bit heavy (the design also looks a bit weird to me).

Runners up right now is: Dell Inspiron 15700

I don't really know very much about laptops (just done a shit ton of research the last two days), but I'd like to make the most of the post Xmas sales! I don't really know anything about upgrading sectors and didn't really know what most of the terminology was (eg RAM, SSD) till a couple of days ago so I'm definitely not a massive snob when it comes to gaming or specs (so if it's a case of one being way pricier than another for a really specific benefit - I probably wouldn't even notice).

Hoping this is the right subreddit to post in but if not I'll delete the post. :)

    Thank you!

    Synaptics trackpads loose?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 03:55 AM PST

I bought a Lenovo Yoga 920 and I love it. Great build, but I have one small gripe. The trackpad is ever so slightly loose towards the left. Unnoticeable when swiping along the trackpad, but there's a sight audible click when I tap. Fine on the right side.

My mum has an Envy x360 and I've noticed her trackpad is loose all over so when you tap that it clicks, and it's louder than mine. Though she's not bothered.

Looked online and come across that most laptops that use Synaptic trackpads, they're usually a bit loose.

Why is this? I'm coming from a Macbook Pro 2011 and there's no play on that trackpad at all.

Probably will keep the Lenovo, it's not really that noticeable, plus I paid for an extra year of warranty so if there are any issues it should get fixed.

I've heard Dell, HP and lenova have a business production line which are of higher quality?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 09:14 PM PST

Do these companies have two distinct production lines, one for business and the other consumer models, is this true?

I have a Dell latitude 3340 and the warranty has just expired-at this point the quality has degraded significantly (I'm guessing it's made this way deliberately but meh)

anyways what I've heard the business models last a long time and the consumer models fail pretty readily once warranty expires to force you to purchase a new unit.

If this is the case what models are "business" and which are "consumer", if you could give examples that would be great :)

    sorry if stupid question

Do good things come to those who wait?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 11:35 PM PST

I would like to get a new laptop eventually. My current laptop has a 3rd gen i7 processor, 8 GBs of ram, and an ssd. It is still quite capable of most tasks that I do on a daily basis. However, it doesn't have a discrete graphics card. I am not much of a gamer but I do casually play EUIV. I would like to play more intensive games though.

Basically, pretty much any laptop with a discrete video card is going to be a noticeable improvement over what I already have. However, I am not in a massive rush to upgrade because I don't/won't play often anyways. So I have the benefit of being able to wait (even 12-18 months wouldn't be too much of a hassle). I am curious if there is any big tech changes on the horizon that I should be holding out for or if the laptop market is too stagnant to bother.

Razer Blade Stealth 13.3 or XPS 13

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 11:05 PM PST

For people that have previous owned the RBS 13.3, what are your personal opinions on the laptop?

I currently have an XPS 13 with the i7-8550U, 8GB of RAM, 256GB SSD, and QHD+ display that I purchased for $1500 CAD.

I am planning on buying a second-hand RBS also with the i7-8550U and QHD+ display, but with double the RAM and SSD at 16GB/512GB for $1400.

I've owned the XPS 13/15 in the past, so I know that they are very reliable machines (at least for me). However, I would like to try something new and something about the RBS attracts me.

Would I be making a mistake? The owner is willing to transfer the details of the Razer account used to make the purchase to my name and email, so hopefully there is no problem with it.

The owner also showed me the PayPal invoice. He paid $2320 CAD for it on November 7th, so I am saving over $900 on a less than two month old laptop.

    Thanks.

Would it be worth waiting for higher end 8th gen mobile cpus in laptops?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 06:44 PM PST

According to intel's site, the only 8th gen intel cpus are U models. I want a laptop that has quite a bit of cpu power so I was also looking at laptops with the 7700HQ, which seems to still outperform the 8th gen models. Only problem is that I've only seen the 7700HQ in gaming laptops. I don't really need a dedicated gpu or the rest of the things that come with a gaming laptop.

Does anyone know when we might see higher end 8th gen mobile cpus? How much better would they be than a 7700HQ?
