i wrote an ebook about how to shop for heavily discounted used laptops on ebay (read for experience) Posted: 31 Dec 2017 02:05 PM PST Hi /r/laptops! I'm not sure how much promotion is allowed here but I'd like to share my own shopping success. TLDR; I spent a month writing a guide on what I discovered after a couple years of shopping pre-owned laptops on eBay. (Sounds scammy I know). I can now effectively find laptops with good 2015 era graphics cards for $400-$600 on eBay. e.g: The laptop I'm writing this on right now I bought for $490 a year ago and it's an Acer Aspire 791G Black edition, Specs: Core i7 4th gen with a GTX 960m graphics card 2TB HDD, 16GB RAM. It arrived in original packaging in virtually new condition. (With the exception of a dead pixel, but I got reimbursement on that). I've done so for quite a few more purchases, in fact just last month I got a 1080p GTX 960M HP Omen for $440 refurbished. Like new, it did have a Latin keyboard layout but my brother didn't mind. I've purchased for three family members and resold three more, all for a profit. My highest profit on an MSI was $160 (after eBay fees 10%, PayPal fees 2.9% & shipping costs ~$30). My lowest was $54 on an HP. Bear in mind reselling on eBay is risky and I've had some bad experiences, so I don't really advise that. What I DO advise is that if you are a buyer and want to save like $500 on a nice gaming laptop it's possible! It might sound far fetched but I've bought and sold enough to know. And I can give you specific records (screenshots and pictures) of each and every purchase I've made to back it up. So I spent a month writing a Kindle book on exactly how to find these deals, before realizing that no one would find it. It's 3.99 on Amazon plus tax. (86 pages, 10 chapters). I go over pretty much everything I know about shopping laptops on eBay. At the beginning of the book I cover all of the main laptop components in summary. The heart of the book is about how I shop eBay's pre-owned section (which is full of garbage listings) and how I can consistently filter out the crap, but get what I want at good discounts. If you can't stomach pre-owned purchases, I don't really blame you but I feel like it gets a bad rap. (And this is coming from someone who's had to return two damaged laptops on eBay). The reason I still feel like it's well worth it is because eBay has a money back guarantee. Sellers just can't rip you off if you do your research. If you've read this and you're somehow still interested PM me and I'll send you the link and give you more details. I can also give you any pics or proof you need. Now I also wanna end by saying that this book can be applied to new purchases too even though it wasn't written from that perspective. (And if you're looking for new laptops I don't really advise you to buy the book because not that much savings are possible in that category). Thanks for reading! [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Dec 2017 12:53 PM PST Happy new year Reddit! So I have bought a Dell Inspiron laptop, the one on the fourth column with a 128 GB SSD / 1 TB HDD; http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/new-inspiron-15-5000/spd/inspiron-15-5570-laptop?view=configurations On the page I bought it from (it's a romanian page, link here) it said that it has a "Discrete graphics card of 4 GB", which I assume is another name for a dedicated card. However, some games have given me a warning saying that I do not have the recommended minimum of 512 MB video memory for the game, so I started looking for some details about my graphics card and I found this tab; it clearly says I have 4 GB available memory but only 128 MB are dedicated. I asked the company about this and they said I do have a dedicated card, AMD Radeon r7 m530. Now I don't really mind having a weak GPU because I'm not a heavy gamer and I bought this laptop for other reasons, but if I do have a strong GPU and for some reason it's not active, I'd like to know how to activate it. I'd like some information over this situation to satisfy my general curiosity, do I have both a dedicated and an integrated GPU and am missing some drivers, have I misunderstood the specifications because they purposefully made them misleading, or am I just still incompetent from a technical point of view? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 12:27 PM PST I have an EVGA SC17 1070 17.3" 4K Gaming Laptop. I just bought it the other day, and now that it's all set up I have some questions about thermals.
Idle Temps (one chrome window open)
TF2 High Settings (4k)
The PrecisionX Mobile program comes with the laptop. It serves as a temperature monitor and an easy interface through which the user may overclock and control fan speeds. It includes GPU temp, CPU temp, and System temp. I'm using that in conjunction with HWMonitor and MSI Afterburner.
I'm not really too concerned about GPU temps under load, although I would like to see lower idle temps across the board. I also find the erratic CPU temps while playing TF2 to be very odd. While I haven't monitored them while playing other games, I can only assume that it will happen during games of equal or greater intensity - CS:GO, Skyrim, etc. It jumps between 60 and high 90s or 100 during play of TF2. It seems nearly impossible to go from 60 to 100 and back again in the span of just a few seconds, but my temperature monitoring programs all indicate that's what happens. System temperature stays at around 50-55 while this is all happening, according to Precision X (I'll do further testing with other applications) which leads me to believe and hope that the CPU temp reading is wrong.
Sorry for the long read, but here's the question: Are these temps normal? If not, what steps can I take to fix them? [link] [comments]

HP Pavilion 15 - 2 storage slots? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 11:41 AM PST Pulled the trigger on this laptop since it was the last day of the sale and Costco has a dope return policy: Does this have 2 storage slots? I couldn't find any details anywhere, so I am assuming it doesn't. But wondering if anyone knows for sure. Knowing I will have to replace the 1TB HD with an SSD, I was hoping to keep it in there for extra storage I don't access all the time. Wanted to ask on here before taking it apart and risking warranty! [link] [comments]
Asus GL703VM no optimus and missing intel hD graphics Posted: 31 Dec 2017 11:27 AM PST I just got my ASUS GL703VM laptop today but am noticing the battery seems to drain rather quickly when unplugged. I right clicked the desktop and it shows the NVIDIA control panel only. Usually when on Optimus the Intel Graphics control panel shows up as well. I look at the NVIDIA control panel. The resolution and display/video settings are fully there. Usually on Optimus you are limited to only the 3D settings. There is no mention of a second display adapter and no option in 3D settings to switch between different display adapters. In the windows device manager, I don't see the Intel HD graphics anywhere and no unknown devices. Windows is fully updated as well as whatever Asus Live Update comes up with. This model is the cheaper Newegg version of the GL703VM that doesn't have the 120hz panel. None of the new GL models have G-Sync nor can I find mention of it in the NVIDIA control panel. What gives? I bought this specifically for Optimus. [link] [comments]

Best 17" laptop as desktop replacement? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 09:53 AM PST I live on the road and am looking for a good 17" laptop to perform general Internet browsing, gaming - (mostly RTS and some circa 2010 AAA titles I never got around to playing), and I'd like to dabble in some 1080p video editing. After some research, these are the specs I find relevant to my needs... *I7-7700HQ and GTX-1060 (although I could be overestimating my needs, and not a deal-breaker if something lower otherwise works) *SSD boot and mechanical HD combo *Weight, thickness, and battery life aren't factors. *No (or minimal) red and black gamer aethestics on case. My budget is roughly $1300 - $1500. [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Dec 2017 09:31 AM PST I want to start developing my own video games in Unreal 4 or Unity but my current laptop cant support it. So I searched for a new one and I found an HP with i7-7700hq , 12 ram, gtx 1050ti. Is it adequate? I also found an ASUS ryzen 7-1700 , 16GB, radeon RX 580 4GB but way more expensive. I dont wish to play games there, atleast not titles like AC or Witcher 3. I just want to see if game dev suits me. I dont want to pay money for something that I dont need. But I want a Pc that can meet my needs for the next 5+ years. So whats the practical difference between the 2? I also need it for programming and maybe app designing. [link] [comments]
Going to Dubai in April. Any 12 hour batteries exist for my Dell Inspiron P28f? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 07:27 AM PST I'd love to just play a few games on Steam to pass the time. Are there any batteries that could power my laptop for the flight? Thanks :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Dec 2017 05:49 AM PST Hey guys, I'm looking for a new laptop to replace my Asus R510JK(X550JK) which starts to fall appart... I want a laptop with an overall great build quality : a good screen, comfortable keyboard / touchpad and most importantly a great battery life. I'm looking for a 15" (I'm ok with 14) laptop, on the edge of ultrabooks, I mean not a bulky heavy laptop with big bezels. I will mostly do internet, watch movies, programming and light gaming, like a 1050 is enough, I have a desktop with an RX480 for gaming anyway. I don't care about 4k or touchscreen, most important things are screen, battery life, form factor / size and dedicated GPU to handle light gaming (CSGO, GTA V low settings, NFS Payback low settings too...) The XPS 15 is very interesting, thought the XPS 13 just had a refresh with Kaby Lake R. XPS 15 2018 with Kaby Lake R are not even announced so I don't know if I should wait or not. Any suggestions ? The Yoga 720 15" seems great too and it's cheaper. But the battery has nothing special and it's performing a bit worse in games compared to the XPS 15 (i guess because of the 2 additionnals gb of vram) So budget is max 1400€ / 1500€ (France) Happy new year eve ! :) [link] [comments]

Best internal wifi for Lenevo idepad 320S ? Posted: 30 Dec 2017 09:53 PM PST Bought this very new laptop with 8GB of ram and an 8th gen Intel quad core CPU: https://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-320s-14ikb-14-laptop-grey-10169401-pdt.html Apparently the wifi on it isn't great. Lenovo Yoga 920 - Chassis Flex? Posted: 30 Dec 2017 06:51 PM PST Just received a Yoga 920 and finding it pretty snazzy. Only issue I'm having is that the area to the right of the track pad makes a "click" or "pop" sound when I rest my hand down to type. It feels like the laptop itself flexes a bit and touches down on something inside the laptop when I put pressure there. Is anyone else experiencing this? Just want to make sure this isn't normal due to how thin the laptop is. Cheers guys. [link] [comments]

Can I add a SSD to this laptop? Posted: 30 Dec 2017 02:54 PM PST I recently bought this laptop and was wondering whether it's possible to add a SSD to this? And if so, is it possible to have both SSD and HDD in the laptop. [link] [comments] |
