To give you a sense of what I'm working on. This is what all the excitement is about, most of it. This computer works great. This one works, too. I'm having a lot of fun. Thank you for giving me a place to express my happiness.

Please help me to stop being stupid. I'm learning this stuff by solving 1 problem at a time. With your help, I hope to learn the answers to questions I'm not smart enough to ask.

Here's what I've figured out so far. - Most the parts are either ubiquitous or model specific. Can't swap stuff like cables, displays, and keyboards between different models. Google can help me figure out what parts are missing. Computers need to be taken apart to clean, and the CPU's thermal compound should be replaced. Operating systems can be installed from USB, if supported by the bios. Ultimate Boot CD has utilities for testing CPU, HDD, and RAM and does not always work. Bench marking is useful for comparing different CPUs. It's a good idea to photograph each step when taking computers apart. Linus Tech Tips, youtube, is a good place to learn.

Suspicious activity on missing iPod Touch

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 04:04 PM PST

I was at a lodge with a group of friends this May when my iPod touch went missing. They are good friends and trustworthy, so I hadn't bothered putting a password on it. It disappeared during the night and in spite of my best detective work, I never found it.

It is a 6th generation iPod touch and appears to be logged out of iCloud, so tracking attempts have been futile. I kept a watch on eBay, sorting by distance, just in case one of my friends had lifted it but nothing ever happened.

Fast forward to today. I had been receiving a few emails over the past month that seemed suspicious. Emails saying I had signed up for various services, etc. Anyways, I went on Gmail to change my password. I noticed in the security log, that my iPod had checked my email about a month and a half ago, November 7. Gmail said the approximate location was "United States". No help there. I went ahead and changed the password. My memory says that Gmail and Facebook were the only apps I left logged in on my iPod. Next, I checked Facebook and it said that it had been accessed by my iPod on November 10. I left the password because Facebook is now the only way I know of to keep track of my iPod. Facebook says that my iPod is in a town about one hour and twenty-five minutes from the lodge.

Is there anything I can do at this point to retrieve my iPod? If not, is there any way I could remotely wipe it, in spite of it being logged out of iCloud?

Tldr; iPod touch was stolen. I discovered recent activity on it. I want it back or I want to destroy it.

None of the components are powering up except for one fan.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 12:40 AM PST

i posted earlier about not getting any signal on my monitor but after opening the case and powering it up, none of the components are powering up except for the back fan. Not entirely sure what to do at this point, i have tried taking out all but 1 stick of RAM but it same thing happened i have tried taking out the 24-pin power connector from the motherboard and the 8-pin from the Graphics Card and reinserting them, also the fan on my CPU heatsink isn't spinning so i'm not sure if i should power up the PC at all. this started happening about 2 days ago.

144Hz monitor changes to 60Hz when getting Windows notification

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 10:32 AM PST

I recently got a new 60Hz monitor which i'm using as a second monitor next to my 144Hz. The only problem is that when I get any kind of notification (e.g Discord/Steam message) my 144Hz monitor goes to 60Hz for a couple of seconds and then back to 144Hz again. This is very annoying and noticable when i'm in game. Other than that it's working perfectly.

Stuck at Getting Windows ready don't turn off your computer

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 02:02 AM PST

It has been doing this since I put it together. I've tried everything I can think of.

I checked boot order, made sure everything is firmly plugged in, unplugged all external devices in the vague hope it might help, tried unplugging literally everything not necessary for operation, turned off XMP and Game Boost, checked all power and data connections and there is NOTHING I can think of. I can't reset windows becauss it's stuck at this screen and I have no way to bypass it.

I'm at my wit's end and all i want is to play some damned games. It usually sorts itself out after 2 or more hours sitting there and doing I dont know what, but it can take up to and beyond 6 hours and this is really infuriating. I tagged this as software, but I don't know at this point. Maybe it is hardware.

Girlfriend's Computer Stuck at BIOS Splash Screen

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 11:18 PM PST

    Hey!

Was my girlfriend's birthday yesterday and I had got her a new chassis and let her have my old i5 3570k with Corsair H100i Cooler and my old MSI GTX 970.

I'm not really a stranger to building computers, done it more times than I can count and I'm very careful with ESD's.

The build went good, surprised with the chassis despite it being a local budget brand. Really good design. Probably the most time I've spent on cable management to ensure it looked nicely as all sides except the top and rear are tempered glass.

Her being very excited, I plugged it all in for her to give it a go. And it just sits there stuck at the BIOS splash screen for a good 1-2 minutes. I can't enter BIOS or the Boot Setup or anything and after a while it goes black and nothing happens.

No beepedi-boopedi from the Mobo to indicate failure. Re-seated the CPU cable and made sure all the bigger connections are good.

Any ideas what may be at fault? I've never encountered this before.

Things I will try but have not as of yet(at work):
    • Double-check the SSD and HDD are connected properly.
    • Re-seat all RAM sticks
    • Try with old crappy AMD "Hurricane" 7800 again(doubt it though)

    TL;DR

Stuck at BIOS splash screen. Motherboard I think is a Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H. Made sure all mobo cables are connected good.

Have not checked SSD and HDD connections as of yet. Will do as I get home. Looking for more potential culprits.

    Thanks in advance!

How to disable bookmark suggestion in Chrome search bar?

Black square on chrome taskbar icon

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 12:33 AM PST

This morning when I turned my PC on and started chrome I noticed a back rounded corner box on the taskbar icon. I've googled it real quick but everything says they're seeing a head where I'm not.

It was sort of in the middle, like a notification bubble but completely black with rounded edges. I've checked my users and I'm the only one there, I'm also running a quick scan with malwarebytes. It did vanish soon after noticing it.

I'm running the latest stable release of chrome on Windows 8.1. any ideas?

    Help (U.K)

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 04:01 AM PST

I game on the PS4 and have trash WiFi at my house. I can barely reach 2mb download speeds with my current internet provider. Also my family aren't too keen to upgrade/change providers which leaves me constantly frustrated trying to play competitive CoD online, or any game for that matter. I was thinking about purchasing a 4G WiFi box to have in my room. I understand I'll be paying approximately £40 a month for 50GB of data and am unsure whether it will be enough data or even good enough to game competitively on. If anyone has experienced this or used a 4G WiFi router please respond and let me know what you thought. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Blue Yeti Pro Input Level Bug

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 03:54 AM PST

I've been using my Blue Yeti Pro to record music for a while. I've been running it using a Mini B to USB cable (from mic to converter) to a USB to USB-C converter to my Macbook Pro.

I had no problems for a long time, and now after maybe 4 months of use (no physical damage, everything still intact) the System Preferences/Sound settings are odd.

The audio level which I recorded music with it was always at full (all the way to the right) and now when I plug in my microphone, it detects and recognizes the device, but the audio level ( the output of the input device) remains at one level, unless the audio input is changed.

It only picks up very loud noises (taps on the physical microphone/blunt noises) and the audio level looks like the pictures below

There are no drivers to be installed for the microphone. I didn't have to download anything for it to work.

    Description of problem

I bought a new monitor yesterday to setup dual monitors. The new one is an AOC G2460PG but it just says no signal when I connect it to my PC. It only has a displayport as a connector so I can't try any other way without buying an adapter. It's not listed under monitors in device manager or in the nVidia Control Panel.

    Cause/Steps to recreate the issue

Having it plugged in whether the PC is on or not.

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

I've tried starting my PC as it being the only connection and also as a dual monitor setup but it's not picking up the new one either way. I've also tried updating my GPU drivers.

Edit: So I turned my Displayport cable around and suddenly it worked. I have no clue why that worked, maybe they weren't in tight enough before, but I'm glad it did.

Want to transfer files between internal HDDs for 2 different computers but unsure about access permissions

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 03:12 AM PST

I currently have 2 internal HDDs hooked up to a small m-ITX PC via this dock. I bought an HTPC for my parents a while back and I want to transfer all of my movies/music stored on the 2 HDDs (about 2 TB worth) to a new hard drive for the HTPC so I can set up a separate Plex server on it.

I was thinking I could temporarily detach the two old drives and stick em into the HTPC via SATA just to transfer files to the new drive, but I know that the old ones are basically treated as internal hard drives so there might be a lot of access permission problems. Is this something I shouldn't be worried about or is there some way to circumvent it?

I can transfer the files via local network as an alternative but I figured that would be really slow... ( the dock does like 10 MB/s via USB)

EDIT: Windows 10 on both machines ( I guess it's not really an HTPC then), would this guide be relevant?

Unable to update BIOS on newly built PC using ASUS motherboard

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 03:06 AM PST

The motehrboard i am using is A ASUS H110M-K Mainboard micro ATX Intel H110 Socket LGA1151 DDR4 Motherboard. I followed the steps on The official ASUS website to update my BIOS ( https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1008859 ). However when I have all the extracted files on my usb they dont show up in the usb when i am in UEFI BIOS Ez Flash as shown in step 8 of the link i included.

Furthermore since this is a new PC i am using Windows 10 S free so i cannot download any tools for the internet to help and it is impossible to upgrade as every time i try to get windows 10 pro my pc is too slow, from what i read online the solution is to update the BIOS to then update Windows 10.

If anybody had any solutions or suggestions it would be much appreciated.

    New hardware less fps (cs:go)

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 02:53 AM PST

For christmas i got me a new PC. unfortunately,in cs, i have less FPS than before (120) and sometimes it "stutters". So i did some research and read that CS:GO needs heavy CPU performance. I got an i9 7900x and people saying that multi core cpus are bad for cs, you only need high clock speed. So i wanted to ask if it possible, that cs:go is not playable with the mentioned i9? (not playable due to the stuttering in between, the fps overall are low, but ok for me.) thanks for your opinion

Hi, I would like to know if I have a charger that has bigger output than original charger, will it burn out the circuit due to the higher current going through them or does the notebook regulate what is coming out of the charger and take only what it needs to be charged properly.

Unable to use 98% of my RAM after a rogue Microsoft support agent

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 02:21 PM PST

I was on Live Chat with a Microsoft Support agent earlier to try and fix a problem with my computer being unable to use the full 16 GB of RAM installed. After three attempts during remote sessions of them each manually allocating the full amount via msconfig, and failing, I reached one agent who proved to be particularly memorable. What she did was instead of typing in 16,000 mb in the usable memory box, she typed 263, and restarted the computer. I don't know if you've ever tried running Windows 10 on a PC with 263mb of RAM, but it's basically a brick. It takes half an hour to start up and log in, and even then I can't even open the start menu or access the internet. I can't even use BIOS because the computer crashes whenever I attempt it. Is there anything I can do to fix this? I can't even access msconfig to undo what she did.

Glitchy looking splotches (artifacts?) on all videos played on my PC.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 02:12 AM PST

For almost a year now, any videos that I play on my computer have had what I assume to be artifacts popping up all over them.

    Example

They started showing up suddenly after I had been live-streaming one day. The program I was using to live-stream, (which had worked perfectly for months before then) repeatedly kept crashing (I later found this was fixed by using the GPU instead of the CPU to encode) and at the same time artifacts started appearing on any videos I played.

So far I have been able to find no way to fix this, I've tried reinstalling nearly every driver on my PC and nothing has helped.

At this point I'm assuming that it's a hardware failure, but I would really rather not have to buy a bunch of components just to find out IF that was the problem.

My GPU and CPU are: EVGA GeForce GTX 960 Superclocked. Intel Core I5 6600K
