Is my ISP throttling my data?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 01:46 PM PST

I've hit my internet data cap of 1TB two months in a row and have no idea how it's possible for two people.

We watch Netflix but not enough to use 1TB, that's 5 HD movies a day for 31 days. No one could be using our WiFi because the signal is lost outside and we have no neighbors for a couple blocks. Could a virus or cryptominer be uses our bandwidth?

Last month when we went over, the very next day we used 50gbs to warrant an extra fine. That's shady af. Mediacom if that helps.

Ay yo mods label this solve n shit. I'm taking it to the Mediacom forums.

Terrible write speeds on Sandisk 120gb plus ssd under Osx

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 02:50 AM PST

Bought a sandisk 120gb plus to my mac mini (5,1) and i'm getting really poor write speeds from it under High sierra. (Max 90mb/s, tested with blackmagicdesigng's disk speed test) Reads are fine tho, (around 500mb/s) High Sierra: https://imgur.com/a/bTya5

So i thought i'd test it also under windows 10. It seems that the write speeds are a lot better there Windows10: https://imgur.com/a/9RIeh

*I've tried with trim off and on, but getting same results. *Ssd firmware is the latest. *Re-installed Os couple times, no change.

    Can anyone help?

Gigabyte motherboard stuck in boot-loop, no power to keyboard

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 08:06 PM PST

Gigabyte B85M-DS3H-A motherboard paired with a i5-4460. Stuck in bootloop. No power is given to the USB keyboard, so unable to flash a bios update. PS/2 to USB adapter didn't work, waiting on a PS/2 keyboard. When the PC is started nothing shows up on screen or any peripherals. I know the issue requires a bios update so it will boot Haswell, just can't figure out how to flash the bios.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 02:46 AM PST

    Yo guys,

So i recently purchased a GTX 1070 to upgrade from my current 970, after taking the 970 out and putting the 1070 in I am getting no output from the card itself and its not being detected in my Device manager.

i have tried the following solutions:

-Restarting -Reseating the card -Updating the BIOS -Updating card drivers -Ensuring power is supplied -resetting CMOS -Disabled onboard GPU from both device manager and BIOS

any help is appreciated, hopefully its not DOA :(

    Description of problem

(x-post /r/buildapc)I bought a GTX 1060 the other day, upgrading from my old 750ti. I installed it, connecting it with a Molex to 6-pin PCIe cable. I installed all the latest drivers, jumped in a game and got 5 fps. I found out this was because MSI Afterburner had turned the fan off. I turned it back on and it was fine. I try to play another game and crashed when loaded at 60fps, now I am unable to get above 5 fps at all.

    • UPDATE: After messing about with MSI Afterburner, I got it to run at 70fps for about 20 seconds before going down to 5 again. The graphs on Afterburner also show that GPU Power is only on 25% even though the power limit is maxed out at 116%.

    • UPDATE 2: After further messing around, games load fine at 60fps but after 30 or so seconds the whole computer crashes, with the fans going to 100% before doing so.

    • UPDATE 3: When running PUBG, the GPU limit fluctuates from 99% to as low as 8%, this happens when I load the game and start with 5 fps.

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

Messing with fan and power settings on MSI Afterburner (I have noticed that no matter what, the fans keep setting back to 0%, with me having to set them back in Afterburner). Installed my old GPU and none of the problems were present, it is only on this GTX 1060.

FIX: So after some fiddling about with the GPU and all the cables pushing them firmly in, I somehow managed to fix it. Thanks so much for all the help you were really great. I'm just glad I don't have to spend more money on a PSU just yet!

    Dual Monitor Gaming Performance Hit

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 01:59 AM PST

Clearly, I do not know as much about computers as I very much should however this past Christmas I was given a Dell S2418HN 24" Monitor.

    Previously I had a eMachines E181H 18.5" Monitor.

The specs for the monitors are shown here respectively:

    Resolution: 1920 x 1080

    Display type: LED Backlit

    HD format: 1080p

    Brand: Dell

    Size: 24 in

    Resolution: 1366 x 768

    Display type: LCD

    Brand: eMachines

    Size: 18.5 in

As for the problem I face, before Christmas, the eMachines monitor was my sole monitor which I used for gaming, it's now been replaced by the Dell monitor and functions as a secondary monitor for things like videos, discord, etc.

However seemingly since the Dell monitor has been plugged into my computer I've experienced serious performance drops in games that previously worked fine. Games that would previously run between 40 to 60 or higher now run between 20 and 30.

The specs of my computer are:

Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 750 Ti

    Driver Version: 388.71

    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4590 CPU @ 3.30GHz

    Ram: 7.89 GB

    Display: 1920 x 1080, 59Hz

    Edit #1: Format issue.

    Edit #2: Typing error.

Computer wouldn't shut down after replacing power supply

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 07:50 PM PST

I decided to replace my PSU in my prebuilt Cyberpower PC running MSI intel.

I connected the cables together. It took me a while to disconnect the factory cables because they were really tough.

I got really tired in the end and my cable management kind fell off. Nevertheless I tried booting it. After it booted it made a weird grinding sound consistently. I decided to not mind it as I thought that it was probably the hard drive. After that I tried gaming a bit on Overwatch, nothing lagged and everything felt fast and snappy. After 1 hour and half of use I decided to shut down to PC.

It then just struck there. Normally the PC would be closed under 10 seconds is struck at the desktop. 3 minutes passed, it finally got more responsive and move on to the black shut down screen, and the cursor was still there. I waited 5 more minutes and nothing changed. I got scared and thought that maybe my motherboard is getting fried so I brute forced a shutdown.

What can I do? Is my motherboard doomed? It was a new PC I got a month ago on the top of that... I personally think that it was my crappy cable management which caused it but I need more inputs guys...

Laptop won't cooperate - problems with wi-fi connection

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 01:40 AM PST

Hey, so, my laptop is around a year old and so far I had so many problems with it. First, the graphical card got fried, then the operational system decided to go 'girl, bye' and die on me. Both times, we took it back to the store and when I got it back BOTH TIMES I lost all the stuff I had on it, coubting essays for school, my art. Everything. Now, recently it started to mess around, freeze while watching youtube videos and just force me to shut it down. (Not to mention that I always have to have it on the charger since I got it back) However, now when I thought I had it all figured out, it decides to disconnect from our wi-fi. At first I thought there was something wrong with our wi-fi, but it works perfectly fine on my phone? I even moved out into our livingroom where the router is. Basically, it disconnects and all the wifi spots it usually can find are just gone and I cant connect to anything, because it can't find anything? What could be the problem? Whenever I restart it's perfectly fine, then randomly disconnects.

((Just a heads up, I'm pretty much retarded when it comes to tech, so please have patience with me))

Is my motherboard killing my RAM?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 12:01 AM PST

I have an Asus Maximus IX Motherboard with G.Skill Ripjaws 3600 RAM. Originally. I had 4 sticks totalling 32GB of ram. Last week, I started getting Error 55 "Ram not installed" codes. I tested all of my ram in single channel mode and it wouldn't POST with two of my four sticks. So I removed them, fast forward to today, and now I get Error 55 unless I only have one stick of RAM installed. Is my RAM unsalvageable? Or my motherboard? How do I prevent myself from losing any more kits of RAM?

USB issue- 'went back in time'

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 03:19 AM PST

Hi Guys! Weird one, but maybe that's because I'm describing it as going back in time haha

I was editing a document within my USB (Adata C008 4GB) and the external hub froze. When I got the laptop/hub to respond again, I went to save data and it said that there was an error with the file path (it did not exist).

So when I opened the USB folders, it was not the most current version of itself.

Approx two weeks earlier I had restructured the folders and added some new documents to the USB. After the freeze the USB had reverted back to the former folder structure (with older documents) with the latest modified date of approximately 1 month earlier. These older documents were all corrupt.

I've since used Recuva in the hope of finding the newer (lost) documents, and failed that, however have recovered all of these older files. I've been unable to find anything edited after that one month time jump backwards. In my recent documents list in word etc, the file paths were still there, but they just came up with errors.

Apologies for my lack of eloquence, I'm not a tech gal in the slightest, and while the docs I've lost aren't the worlds most important files, I'd love any suggestions on how to recover. I've been unable to find a smarter way to describe what occurred other than 'went back in time' so my copious googling has been a rather large failure (and resulted in me feeling like an absolute imbecile haha). thanks for any suggestions :)

    *edited for attempted clarity

    Graphics card no longer detected?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 11:16 PM PST

I have a ASUS ROG G20CB, Graphics card is an Nvidia 1070, PC is about 10 months old.

All I did was simply plug an Xbox controller into the front USB ports when the computer suddenly turned off, I feared a short. The USB ports still work but I noticed no display, the only thing that works is plugging an HDMI into the onboard graphics. Now while on my PC I notice it does no longer detect my 1070, little nervous, any ideas?

Computer freezing/blue screening after installing windows 10

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 09:04 PM PST

    Specs:

Windows 10 Home CPU: AMD FX 4200 GPU: MSI Twin Frozor Gaming GeForce GTX 750 w/ 2gb VRAM Memory: 2 Wintec One 4gb Motherboard: MSI 970A-G46

    Backstory:

My computer is old. My sister's fiancé had always been a computer guy and he basically built this PC for me so I honestly don't know much about PCs except how to put one together and take it apart. When we built it, we put windows 7 on it. Fast forward to thanksgiving and I decide I want to get windows 10. I tried to upgrade it months ago when Microsoft gave it out for free but it crashed constantly. I don't remember the details so I'm not sure if it's doing what it did then. Anyway after reverting back to windows 7 it basically deleted my oem and said the key was fake. So fast forward to thanksgiving and I purchase a windows 10 key off of kinguin and make a boot disk on a flash drive from the iso on Microsoft's website. I format my drives just so I could start fresh and after all the setup I have a new copy of windows 10!

    Symptoms:

I said blue screen/freezing because I only saw the windows 10 blue screen once but I still thought it would be worth mentioning. Basically every 15 minutes-2 hours my computer freezes. The screen stops in its place and there is nothing moving on the screen. This next part may be a small detail but it's the thing that jarred me the most. My rgb lights on my keyboard also freeze! I have a razer blackwidow chroma and I keep it on a wave function where a rainbow light patter sweeps across the keyboard from right to left. But whenever my computer freezes, those lights also freeze in their place! This suggested to me that it at least isn't a graphics problem. The freezes also for as long as I can tell are active until the computer is restarted by holding down the power button. I know almost for sure that they don't ever fix themselves because once I left my computer on and left the house for a few hours I'd say around 4 o'clock. I came back at ~7 o'clock and the screen was frozen, keyboard lights were frozen and the time on the screen said something like 4:12. All of this only started as soon as I installed windows 10 but I'm so sure if that's purely a coincidence or not.

I know that's a lot of rambling but I'm trying to explain in as much detail as possible.

    Please help!

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 02:49 AM PST

So, I just did a fresh install of Windows 10 (Home, x64) few days ago, and a strange thing keeps happening ever since. Taskbar and all apps cant be clicked with left nor right mouse, multimedia buttons on keyboard stop working, can't access Start etc. Restarting explorer doesn't help either. Sometimes this occurs right after start, sometimes at takes a while. Worth noting that this didn't happen on my previous install of Windows.

100% CPU Usage While Playing a Game After Installing Additional HDD

    Description of problem

I installed a part for the first time everything was looking fine even after the formatting of the disk I was able to install stuff on the disk without problems, but when I tried to run a game even if it was on the OS SSD I would notice 100% CPU usage in task manager and be struggling to reach 30fps in games I would normally reach 200 . For example, Overwatch would take ~20 seconds to get to the connecting to server screen and longer just to load the main menu and in the training range it would say 20-24fps, but there was input delay from the mouse and felt much lower. I also tested Hearthstone and even it was lagging, but it was most noticeable when the first turn started for either player it was not really there during the mulligan stage. The only thing I have done with the HDD was move a steam game over to it and install a game on it and even after completely wiping the drive there were still these problems.

*Steam games on SSD are unaffected, but when I installed BL2 on my HDD it ran at 20fps at the same settings when it was 80+

Reformat the drive from an MBR to GPT and vice versa, run scans for errors in the disk itself, tried changing the disk to a logical disk. Tried running PUBG, Don't Starve, Dead by Daylight, and other Steam games all fine ran Battlefield 4 and same problem with Overwatch except CPU was not 100%.
