[Help] High/100% disk usage since Windows 10 update

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 06:44 PM PST

A couple weeks ago I got a Windows 10 update -- I think it was the creator update. It was around then, anyway. Since then my computer will randomly shoot up to 100% disk usage and basically brick my computer for 10-60 minutes. It often happens around an hour after startup, but sometimes it happens hours later too. I'll be able to do some things that don't obviously use disk, like scrolling up and down a large AskReddit thread (presumably because it's all already in RAM), but as soon as I try to hit a new website or something else Chrome will just freeze. I won't even be able to do something like open Task Manager if it's not already open.

Some googling gave me ideas like disabling Telemetry, or disabling Windows Store, or updating drivers, but nothing has done the trick so far.

The strangest thing is that neither Task Manager nor the Resource Monitor are able to tell me what, exactly, is hogging all my disk.

Screenshot disk usage is at 100% and everything is frozen, but no tasks/processes are using any significant disk. Same thing here. Or, this one doesn't even have any processes using disk.

Anybody have experience or thoughts on what's going on here? Or, even thoughts on how to diagnose the problem? I don't know what else to do besides having Task Manager/Resource Monitor up when the problem randomly crops up, since I can't do anything while my computer's frozen. And even that doesn't seem to have given any useful diagnostic information.

Defender keeps notifying me of threat, even after I've allowed it

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 10:14 AM PST

Just trying to get this program to shut up already. Even when I turn notifications off in the defender settings, every 20 mins or so it'll still alert me of the threat.

Windows File Audit Permission GPO is not being set on Win10.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 09:52 AM PST

Sorry if this is breaking the rules, i'm trying to figure out Group Policy stuff and I thought this would be the best place to ask.

So I have a small test network set up with a Win10 VM attached a Windows Server 2016 VM as a DC.

I'm trying to set up a file audit policy via GPO. I go to Security Setting/File System and I add a file in and add a Audit policy under Advanced in the Security Tab.

This GPO is linked to the entire domain so both the DC and the Win10 VM should be getting it I think,

When I do a GP update however, the 2016 server has the permissions but the Windows 10 VM does not.

Doing gpresult on the Win10 VM shows them being applied, but when I check the file manually it does not have the Audit policy that I set.

Is there another setting I have to enable in the GPO to make this work?

Any help would be great, even just a point in the right direction would be awesome.

EDIT: I figured it out(I think, it could of just taken some time to work for whatever reason.) but instead of deleting this post, i'll leave it up for the next guy who can't figure it out.

Short version is I needed to enable Auditing on the Computer Object via Active Directory Users and Computers.

I found some instructions here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd277403.aspx , Under Enabling Object Auditing.

How do I get Windows for my laptop?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 12:05 PM PST

Many many years ago, I built a desktop and bought a copy of Windows XP from the store.

I would format my harddrive and reinstall Windows from the CD every 6 months or so - very easily done.

    .

I bought a lenovo thinkpad a few years ago that came with Windows 7 installed but no CD. (it does have a harddrive partition with an option to reinstall - the clerk told me)

I want to change the harddrive to a SSD, how can I do this and reinstall windows?

    1. Can I download Windows for free from MS and then burn a dvd and then use that to install? (I hate how they don't give a copy of windows when you buy the computer - my coworker told me its not the Windows costs money, its the serial number that is worth the money so no real reason not to give a CD or dvd with a copy of windows)

    2. Is there a way for me to get my serial number from my laptop so that I can use it when I re-install Windows?

    Thank you

Can I delete orphaned installer files?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 08:43 AM PST

I posted a few days ago that about 30 GB of data is currently occupied by Windows Installer, which is ridiculous. My other computer does not have this problem. Though it is newer its Windows Installer folder is mostly unoccupied. Someone suggested to run PatchCleaner and I did just to see if any of those files are orphaned, and PatchCleaner stated that 28.8 GB of those files are orphaned. Other people were hesitant about using third party software for cleaning system files and suggested I run Disk Cleanup instead, but I have run Disk Cleanup multiple times and it didn't do anything. I ran as admin and clicked every option and nothing changed. I too am hesitant about using third party software, and I really cannot afford the time to break and then fix my computer, so what are my options here? Is Patch Cleaner safe to use? Or is there a Windows approved patch to fix this? And if I shouldn't delete these files directly, how can I find out which programs require these installer files? Maybe there are programs that I don't need that I can remove.

One more thing, I have ~20 GB of data left on my C drive (128 GB). If there is another major update I will not have enough room to download the installer. What do I do? Windows either needs to get rid of these installer files, or I need to buy a new hard drive, which is bullshit. Is it at all possible to buy another hard drive and use that as an extension of my C drive? I dont want to setup everything over again because Microsoft can't figure out how to reduce bloat.

Game crashes and black screen after 13 seconds of a big game, (roblox, 100% cpu usage) Memory or CPU? (restart required)

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 02:41 PM PST

I'm wondering if this is memory or the CPU, I'm sure it's the CPU. If I play another game that doesn't use much CPU, It's fine. No black screen. What do I do? It was working fine a week ago, also!

Skype "Oops" on Windows 8.1: Solution

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 03:38 AM PST

For some reason Windows 8.1 "updates" only to Skype 7.3 which is outdated and won't connect. To use Skype again you need to install the latest version (8.11):

    1. Uninstall Skype
    2. Go to the Skype website and download the latest version ( https://www.skype.com/en/get-skype/)
    3. Install the new version

Now you should be able to use Skype again.

Where should i store 31.0 GB of data before erasing disk?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 06:32 AM PST

I cannot install Windows because all the partitions on my PC are GPT and the only way to fix it is by erasing the Disk, i cannot download anything, but i can copy & paste items, but i cannot go online, im currently running the Windows Explorer on a DVD. I have a lot of CD's and DVD's and they don't work ("106 MB free of 4.38" after formating)

Erasing a whole entire Disk will delete partitions

[8.1] I've installed Ubuntu on another disk and not windows is dependent on grub to boot

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 04:02 AM PST

    edit title should say:

[8.1] I've installed Ubuntu on another disk and not now windows is dependent on grub to boot

Trying to fix bootloader for windows so it can boot without grub.

Usually I unplug the windows drive when installing Linux and then I just choose what disk to boot from when starting the pc. But I forgot to do that this time.

I have an issue but with windows 8.1 ( UEFI install). I can still boot into windows via grub through. If I try to boot directly to windows, then it fails and says there is no recognized OS please insert boot media or restart. I have Ubuntu installed on disk 1 and windows installed on disk 0.

Ive tried easybcd, easyRE, and various things in the command prompt from the windows install disk. I've also tried the automated windows repair from the disk.

    EDIT:

    I've also tried this: http://itechs-systems.com/fix_corrupt_UEFI_partition.aspx

You will need to choose the language and time settings. Choose 'Repair Your Computer'. Choose 'Troubleshooting'. Choose "Advanced Options'. Next choose 'Command Prompt'. Next, we're going to use the DISKPART tool to verify that the UEFI partition has a drive letter assignment.

    Enter 'DISKPART' (Enter)

(In this test case we removed all other drives except the boot HDD and DVD, so we know the disk 0 is our boot HDD)

    DISKPART> sel disk 0

Disk 0 is now the selected disk.

    DISKPART> list vol

There was no drive letter assignment to our UEFI partition (volume 3) so we need to assign a drive letter.

    DISKPART> sel vol 3

Volume 3 is the selected volume.

    DISKPART> assign letter=E:

DiskPart successfully assigned the drive letter or mount point.

    Exit DiskPart tool (Enter EXIT)

Next, we need to change to the boot folder on the UEFI volume.

Change to the UEFI volume into the boot folder. Depending on the way Windows was installed this path maybe one of the following.

    cd /d E:\Boot\

    cd /d E:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\

    cd /d E:\ESD\Windows\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\

Now we will need to enter three command lines to repair the BCD store. Again depending on the way Windows was installed these may not all be necessary, however command lines are are unnecessary will not affect the outcome.

bootrec /fixboot bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /rebuildbcd That's it, if all went well the BCD store should be repaired, and the system will once again boot.

Except I omit the fixmbr part because I thought that only applied to non-UEFI installs. The rebuildbcd always results in a failure. (i'm at work and can't remember what the failure is right now)

Micro usb cable not working with xbox one controller.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 04:38 PM PST

So I have a cable that's shitting out on me and I'm trying to use some other cables with the controller but none of them seem to work with it. The other cables are generic ones you can get anywhere. Not really sure what to do about it. Not sure if this is the right place to post this either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How do I change my entire life from Mac over to Windows?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 08:13 PM PST

For 10 years I've been using exclusively apple products (including iTunes and iCloud) and it's time to switch to windows. Whats the fastest and least painful way to make the change, and how do I switch all my cloud, user data, apps (assuming most of them have a windows/android counterpart) games, and backups?

    Desktop/Keyboard Shortcut for Nightlight (On/Off)?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 02:53 AM PST

Is it possible to either create a shortcut that I can put on the task bar or bind to a keyboard key in order to enable/disable the nightlight setting in Windows?

I've searched everywhere and can't seem to find anything. I have the action center disabled because the only reason I have been opening it is to turn on and off the nightlight. Hoping for a more efficient method!

    Thanks in advance!

Is it possible for me to download the Windows 10 1703 again?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 08:19 PM PST

I downloaded Window's Fall Creator Update (1709) and I was having huge issues with games crashing and giving me blue screens. I decided after testing out other things that I'd revert the update and as my PC was fine prior, however, I never got the option to revert the windows update at all so I'm stuck with it.

Since my PC never had a single hitch until this update and I can't go back. I was wondering if there was a website that had 1703 Windows Creation Tool so I could install Windows 1703 with a USB to see if my PC goes back to normal. I tried checking windows directly but it seems they give you no options.. :(

    Thanks for the help!
