First time I'll ever be swapping out a drive in a computer. How do I go about installing Windows onto the SSD and will it ask for a key?

    Laptop just for Word

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 10:02 AM PST

My young kids want a laptop just for typing on. It's not going to have games, email, or anything else (we have a separate PC for that).

I want to get the cheapest thing I can get away with because I expect that it won't last so long under my kids' expert care...

    What do you recommend?

Trying to decide between two Dell XPS 13 laptops

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 01:29 PM PST

I am deciding between two versions of the Dell XPS 13 to purchase and am hoping for some advice. I mostly use my laptop for streaming videos and office work, I'm not a gamer, and don't need a touchscreen. Given my basic laptop use is the difference between i5 and i7 substantial enough to justify a $50 increase?

    Dell XPS 13 i5-7200U; 8GB RAM; 256GB SSD touchscreen $799

    Dell XPS 13 i7-8550U, 8GB DDR3, 256GB SSD non-touchscreen $850

Please help, Screen issues on Dell 7567.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 12:18 PM PST

I bought a Dell 7567 in sept, the upgraded model with the IPS screen and 1050Ti. Unfortunately this is how it has been behaving since my return period expired at bestbuy.

The laptop has been to depot three times. They keep replacing parts and its to the point that I have a ton of rounded out screws and the same issue I started with in sept.

I just bought a dell 5577 and common complaints are the TN panel. If I'm upgrading from this laptop, will I even notice a difference? You can't miss what you've never had right? Or is the screen on this laptop better than TN?

Laptop Recommendation for someone who has no idea

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 09:56 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Germany, ~400€ * Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best Specifications for the money * How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important. * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 7,8 or 10 * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. League of Legends, Player Unknowns Battlegrounds * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League of Legends, Player Unknowns Battlegrounds, Lowest Setting possible, solid FPS(~60) * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? None * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I mostly want to use it for school stuff(Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Internet, e-Mail). The games aren't that important, but it would be nice if you could find something fitting.

    [Review] ASUS VivoBook F510UA

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 09:06 AM PST

Recently purchased an ASUS VivoBook F510UA from Ebay for approximately 550 dollars. Amazon link here

The laptop is pretty popular, so I figured I'd give it a quick review.

NOTE: I have a full gaming desktop rig and this laptop is mainly for school/work, hence the graphics card is NOT required for me.

The laptop has AVERAGE build quality. It is entirely plastic, but does not feel super cheap. I was previously using a Sony Vaio S series from 2011 and this feels superior in build quality. The primary weak point is the keyboard. The flex is excessive, borderline unacceptable. I'm assuming this is where costs were cut to allow for the 8th generation processor. The hinge feels sturdy, and the trackpad is fine.

    Pros:

    • Price: This is a very affordable laptop, which was the primary driving factor for me.

    • Screen: The IPS 1080p screen is pretty good, though I wouldn't call it great. There is some minor light bleed, and the screen is slightly more dim than average, but I've adjusted to it. The bezels are small, especially on the side, which was another deciding factor for me.

    • Ports: 3 USB-A and 1 USB-C (non thunderbolt) works fine for me.

    • Performance: The 8th gen CPU works VERY well (I run solidworks on this).

    • Weight: This weighs less than my previous 13 inch laptop, and has a very sim profile.

CONS: * Keyboard: Lack of backlighting doesn't bother me, but excessive flex is concerning.

    • HDD: 5600 RPM harddrive is UNBERABLY slow, you will NEED to purchase an m.2 drive for this.

    • Charger: I haven't seen this mentioned in other reviews, but the prongs on the charger DO NOT FOLD IN. In my opinion, this is an embarrassment for a computer built in 2017. I nearly decided to return the computer immediately after unboxing due to this. Every time I throw the charger in my bag I am now paranoid that it will poke holes through my bag. I consider this a major flaw of the computer.

    • Battery: I'm getting about 4.5 hours of battery life with standard web browsing. For a laptop without a GPU, I expected more, though 4.5 hours is sufficient for me.

    Bottom Line

This laptop is suitable for my usage. I'm a last-year engineering student and just need something to use while I'm at school away from my desktop. A 15.6 inch laptop under 4 pounds is very hard to find, especially at sub 550 dollars. I do not plan on using this laptop very much after I graduate college in one year, this was primarily a budget buy.

If you are in the market for a budget light/thin 15.6 inch laptop this is a very good choice, as long as you can stand the terribly designed charger, the sub-par keyboard, and the slow hard-drive.

My Asus GL502 is too fucking big so I want to downsize a bit

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 08:55 AM PST

    Specs:

GTX 1060 but this is negotiable since I don't play games nearly as much as I used to and when I do it's often Citra and Cemu

    NVME if available

Less width and length than the GL502, hopefully thinner but this isn't as important. It's the footprint that's the problem, it doesn't fit on the tiny ass desks in college.

Price: <= whatever price the GL502 will fetch by the end of the school year. I think it goes for $1000 but maybe I could sell it for more if it goes out of stock

    Candidates:

Aero 15 used or after price cut

    Stealing a Surface book 2

    Any other options?

Need a laptop recommendation before moving to canada to backpack. 13.3", from Belgium, 700€ or less

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 03:55 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 700€ or less, Belgium

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, the lighter the better

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Yep, 13.3"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. None

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? None

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? None

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am a freelance Translator so I need a computer where I can run some Computer Assisted Translation programs such as SDL Trados, Multiterm and Multitrans. I am also moving quite regularly, that's why I want a light laptop. I have had a ASUS X73S for the last 6 years and it worked perfectly, so I would like to buy an ASUS again.

My use is pretty general: browsing the web, translating a bit via CAT tools and using Word and Excel. I don't game, I don't code, I don't edit videos.

Yoga 920 vs Thinkpad x1 Yoga 2nd Gen / USA $1300-1400 price point

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 11:12 PM PST

I am looking for a 14", 2-in-1, lightweight, w/ higher end CPU/RAM for large datasets. Entering grad school in the field next year. This will be my laptop to carry everyday and also have as a personal machine.

I saw these two deals online and I am hoping to get your opinion on which might be the best for me. (or another option entirely?)

    ThinkPad X1 Yoga (2nd Gen) https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-x/Thinkpad-X1-Yoga-2nd-Gen/p/20JD004UUS

    Lenovo Yoga 920 https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-yoga-920-2-in-1-13-9-4k-ultra-hd-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-512gb-ssd-platinum/6139200.p?skuId=6139200

As I see it so far:

X1 Pros: Price about $200 less after coupon, Durability?

    X1 Cons: 7th gen processor, 8g RAM ddr3, Bezels

    920 Pros: 8th gen, 16g RAM ddr4, Nicer Finish

920 Cons: Price, 4k screen = less battery life

I have had this Dell Inspiron 15 5521 laptop for about 5 years now and its been acting up for a while. Wondering if this Dell 17 5000 would be a good upgrade. Not terribly well versed with the associated technobabble and would appreciate in what ways one is better or worse than the other as well.

Received wrong laptop, but is is better?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 09:01 PM PST

    Hi,
I recently bought a laptop on cyber monday. When my family member went to pick up the laptop, it seems they have given me a different model. I have a few questions I would like to ask and get helped on.
    1) Which one is better? This is for my sister, she is not going to be gaming. Mostly browsing/watching dramas.
    2) My receipt states the model I ordered, but since I didn't get that model, will my warranty be gone?
3)The pad on the laptop seems to be always double clicking, is this a set function or malfunction? Can I change it?

    Here are the 2 models:

Model that I received (Was already unsealed):
    Dell Inspiron 15 i5577-5858BLK-PUS Gaming Laptop 5
    Description
    • 15.6 in FHD anti-glare LED-backlit (1920 x 1080)

    Model that I ordered:
    Dell Inspiron 15 i5570-5364SLV-PUS Laptop
    Description
    • 15.6 in Full HD IPS TrueLife LED-backlit touchscreen (1920 x 1080), 10-finger multi-touch support
    • Intel Core i5-8250U
    • 8GB memory/1TB HDD
•Intel UHD Graphics 620 with shared graphics memory

Advice would be very much appreciated, thank you.

    Asus FX502vm-AS73 Upgrades?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 08:55 PM PST

I just impulsively ordered this laptop without seeing the reviews about the poor display quality and battery life. I've seen it is possible to replace the screen with an IPS display, but I do not know which one to buy. Also, is it possible to upgrade the battery to have a longer battery life? Is it also possible to upgrade the cooling system? I've seen that it gets rather warm, but this isn't a huge concern as I am used to a hotter laptop. Thanks in advance
