Need help deciding which laptop to buy

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 11:22 AM PST

Hi! I've been thinking about buying a laptop for a while and I've come to 2 laptops that were worth buying in my country. The Asus Rog Strix GL702VM ( https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ROG-GL702VM/ ) and the Clevo P700-G ( http://www.inphtech.pt/computadores/gaming-17/ ).
They'll have almost the same specifications except the Clevo will have a CPU i5-8600K while the Asus will have a i7-7700HQ. The chassis will obviously be different as they are from different brands. The Clevo will cost 1,624.70 € on the other hand Asus will cost 1,579.90 €.
I'm worried about the Clevo chassis as I've heard that the build is pretty weak and it weights about 3.9 kg.
    Thanks in advance!

Looking to purchase new laptop in next 6 months that is fast, rugged and reliable. Where to go to get good prices?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 10:14 AM PST

Not looking for a heavy gaming laptop, but might play The Sims. Seeking one for writing and saving lots of documents and pictures. I have a HP Pavilion at the moment and love it but it's getting old and screen keeps going blue and orange and I'm told the video card might crap out soon, so I could always hook this computer up to a monitor if that happens but I'd rather just get a new laptop in the next few months so I have mobility. Do you have recommendations about fast, good, inexpensive (under $500, if possible) laptops? Brands, stores, online? I'm thinking Amazon but wonder what you all think.

    Thanks in advance!

found both on craigslist for the same price, conflicted as they both have near exactly the same specs, same i5, same amount of ram, etc. Hoping people who have used either of these laptops have input

[Buying help] [USA] [$500-550] Need new laptop for travel

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 12:29 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 500-550 (or less, lol)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I need the best specs for the money. I don't do "work" on my laptop, so mostly gaming while away from my war rig.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? it's not very important. I don't want to haul around a 20 pound laptop, but the one I have now is going on 7 years old, and isn't exactly light.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. not really, though for my budget I imagine max is 15.6 or so.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming: Paladins, Fallout (series), Witcher 3 would be nice, maaybe battlefield 3/4.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? already listed the games, so at medium at least. My OG laptop can run most of those games at low and around 25-30fps though I haven't tried the witcher or battlefield.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I will use a mouse to game, but I use the touchpad for absolutely everything else. A nice keyboard would be nice but I'm not expecting miracles. My budget is low, and I know this.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm not too proud to buy a used laptop from last year or so, especially if it means better specs. The only "fancy" feature that I really like on my current LT is a fingerprint reader, but from what I've seen those seem to be trending out at the moment. Ideally I'd like 1080p, and enough power to stream 4k youtube. Don't need a 4k screen to enjoy the better bitrate, but my current laptop just flat out won't do it. For reference I have a first (or second, I'm not totally sure) gen AMD A-8 apu, and tbh while everyone shit on it when it released, this lil guy has been doing me proud for all these years. But, the keyboard is becoming inconsistent, the aluminum around the touchpad has become exposed making that a nightmare to use, and it's just getting old. I tried to spruce it up by removing the disk drive and adding an SSD, which does make it boot really quick, but hasn't woken it up as much as I'd hoped it would. I'd be happy to have an ssd in the new laptop, but again I understand how low my budget is. I wouldn't mind a lower tier laptop with the ability to add on upgraded parts later though, like an empty ssd slot or ram slots.

    Acer v13 Touch Noise question

    Cheapest SSD

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 11:35 AM PST

I recently got an hp omen ax250wm, and I want to add a ssd. I do not need a big size, 60gb should be sufficient. From what I have heard, the laptop uses m.2 format. I would like a cheap ssd, that works with the laptop.

M.2 NVMe storage & USB C charging for HP Envy x360

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 10:11 AM PST

I have purchased an Envy x360, model 1ZA23AV_1, and it's on its way.

I'm intrigued by things I've read about NVMe, with its extremely fast read/write times compared to SATA SSDs. I'm going to move my old 2.5" SSD drive into this computer (got the "cheap" 1TB HDD option), and was considering buying a Samsung 960 EVO NVMe stick.

I know M.2 can connect via SATA or PCIe ,or both depending on computer configuration. I think this laptop supports PCIe, but is there any sure way to discern? Also, I can't find the page I had read originally, but I saw that NVMe storage devices that use PCIe need 4 "lanes" to operate at their fastest speed, and that other devices can potentially use some of the lanes, slowing down the max speed available. Do you all know if I'd have less than 4 lanes left over in the machine linked at the top? Finally, how noticeable of a performance different might I expect over a middle-of-the-road SATA SSD?

For a charger on the go, I was thinking of tossing this charger and this cable (Benson approved!) into my backpack. I can't find specs online for the Envy x360 - would the 46W USB C adapter be compatible and sufficient?

Help. Just bought Dell Inspiron 15 5000, AMD FX 9830P with RX 560. Is this a good purchase?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 05:58 AM PST

I just purchased the following laptop:

    Dell Inspiron 15 5000

    • CPU: AMD FX 9830P Quad-Core APU with Radeon R7 Graphics
    • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 560 with 4GB DDR5 graphics memory
    • Hard Drive: 256 GB SSD
    • Memory: 8 GB, 2400MHz, DDR4

    http://www.dell.com/en-ca/shop/dell-laptops-netbooks-and-tablets/inspiron-15-5000-gaming-amd/spd/inspiron-15-5576-gaming-laptop/ni155576_btsb_h309e

For $788.75 CAD with $75 CAD from ebates, so for around $714 CAD (around $557 USD).

    *CAD = Canadian Dollars

Is this a good purchase for the price? Or should I switch to something with a better CPU? I read from different places that FX 9830P can bottleneck the performance of RX 560. I mainly play FFXIV, WoW and Diablo 3. I am also planning to use this laptop for coding as well (potentially dual-booting ubuntu).

    Thanks for your help, fellas!

    choosing between two laptops

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 07:33 AM PST

I'm buying a new laptop for general use (I don't play many games and don't need a huge amount of storage space) and my main aim is to get it running as fast as possible for every day tasks (i.e. lots of chrome browsing, editing word docs, media player).

I'm still getting my head around the different specs involved, so I'm kind of unsure of which will make the biggest difference to having a fast, reliable laptop.

I've narrowed it down to the following three options (in order of cost), and I'd really appreciate any advice! Do you think I'll notice a significant difference between them for the kind of usage I described?

    option 1: Acer Aspire e5 Intel Core i3-7100U 2.4 GHz (Dual-core), 4GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB 5400rpm hard drive.

option 2: Acer Aspite e5 + upgrades Either adding another 4GB of RAM, or adding 120GB SSD. (Any thoughts on which would do more to improve performance are very welcome! As are any tips on things I need to consider when buying these upgrades.)

    option 3: Acer Swift 3 Intel Core i5-7200U 2.7 GHz, 4GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD.

[edit] option 4: Anything else you might want to recommend at a similar budget

Intel core processor: 6th generation i3 vs 7th generation i5

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 06:51 AM PST

The laptop I'm interested in buying has two versions, both are the same, but one has a 6th generation i3 processor (i3 6006U) and the other has a 7th generation i5 processor (i5-7200U).

The one with the i5 is £50 more expensive

    Which should I buy?

I'll be using the laptop for standard stuff, browsing web, watching tv shows/films, word, excel, a bit of programming on java/python.

Might play the occasional counter strike game. Very rare these days though.

Could have a dozen tabs opened at the same time while watching a film or doing spreadsheets.

would I notice any difference in performance between the two processors? Would the i5 use more energy and cause the fan to operate more even while idling/small tasks?

    GS63VR now or aero15X later?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 06:32 AM PST

    Hey,

I live in Europe, Estonia and I am looking for a high-endish laptop for personal use for gaming and game development with Unreal Engine.

After long and painful hours of research I have concluded my search with 2 laptops:

    MSI GS63VR 7RG Stealth Pro 1070 (~2000 euros) Gigabyte Aero 15x (~2400 euros)

I do not need the laptop tomorrow but I also would not like to wait half a year for Gigabyte to restock their laptops here in Europe. The MSI laptop is available from a local reseller.

Should I buy the MSI now or wait and buy the more expensive (and better) Gigabyte Aero15x?

    Laptop Question!

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 06:07 AM PST

Hi guys! So I'm quite clueless when it comes to laptops. A friend of mine recommended a Chromebook as a possible alternative to a laptop but I don't know jack about either so I would love some feedback/input. That being said, I'm looking to buy either one.

My needs would be quite simple: I'm a Dungeon Master in a Dungeons and Dragons group, and want an option that relieves me of having to lug around 5-7 books each week which is where a laptop/Chromebook can help me out!

I'm not sure what is needed but I'm looking for an option that has:

At least 4GB of ram, at least 32GB of internal storage, decently fast processor (here's where I'm not sure; at least 1.5GHz?), I don't think I want less than a 14" screen, 1920 x 1080 resolution would be ideal.

Bottom line: this purchase would be used mainly for browsing through multiple PDFs at a time and YouTube videos/web browsing, so something that won't lag or stutter is needed.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice!

Display quality differences? HP Spectre x360 15" Early & Late 2017 models

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 09:58 PM PST

Hey r/laptops, I need your help!

I'm currently sitting with two nearly identical 15" HP Spectre x360s in front of me.

One is my original, the early 2017 model that I got in spring. The other is the new model that arrived today. I love this laptop so much but I felt like I really needed the boost that came with the move to the 150MX and 8th gen i7 -- basically the only notable differences in models. I planned on selling the old one and eating the difference as an upgrade cost. But...

tl;dr ahead of time -- Is my new laptop defective, am I experiencing human error, or did HP lower the quality of their display in between models?

My early 2017 model has this crisp, bright screen with really accurate white balance. It's gorgeous and f.lux warms the palette perfectly at night without compromising color integrity. So, since the late 2017 model is virtually identical, I suspected nothing less out of it as well.

However, as I was getting everything set up and transferred over, I noticed that the new screen was a little too red. When I had f.lux on it was a dull pink instead of a soft yellow. I fiddled with the settings all over the place: using the color calibration tool, in the Intel settings, etc. With f.lux on both, with f.lux off.

No matter what, I couldn't quite get the white balance right. Then I noticed things weren't quite as crisp and legible (an almost imperceptible amount). Then I noticed it straight up isn't as bright and doesn't seem to have as much of a range between bright and dim. Then I noticed the colors in my old display seem to be slightly richer with a wider visible range (and not in an over-saturated way).

I really wanted the extra power, but I'm not sure it's worth the image quality sacrifice if I'm also paying a couple hundred for the pleasure.

Is it truly just a worse display? Despite trying to restore everything to their defaults, am I forgetting about some settings somewhere? Is there a panel lottery in laptops like there is in TVs sometimes?

    Any input is appreciated!

Need help to choose perfect set-up

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 11:04 PM PST

Hi, I'm asking for your help because I can't take a decision about my future computer. I'll be brief but don't hesitate to question me.

    • TL;DR : Need 13 or 15" with eGPU capability, available in early/mid 2018.

    • Budget : Don't care, I just want the set-up I need.

    • ** OS :** My softs run on Mac and WIndows so one of them.

    • Portability (size/thinness) : I'm not looking for a 10inch laptop but something I can take with me without struggling. A 13" or a 15" light and thin can be perfect. A great battery life will definitly be a plus.

    • Performance : High ! I'm not looking for high-end but I need it. I have to display and process lot of data, in real-time. So I'm looking for an i7 and 16Go Ram minimum (32 will be a plus).

    • Display : At least 1920x1080.

    • Set-up at home : When I'm at home I would like to plug my laptop on a base or a box and have 2 external monitors (and the laptop screen in idle if it's possible). A box with a eGPU will be the best !

    • Problem : I don't see so much solution to my request. The Razer Blade Stealth with the eGPU looks great but the after-sales service seems terrible. Dell XPS can be perfect but I didn't see any set-up with eGPU. A Macbook Pro can be perfect but doesn't allow eGPU at 100%. High Sierra seems to fix the problem but I didn't find any feedback.

    • Delay : I can wait couple of months. I mostly wait for the Intel I7 8th gen octo-core so maybe in March 2018.

Thank you in advance for your responses.
