Laptop for humanities in college? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 11:54 AM PST I'm planning on taking non-technological coursework in college so I was wondering what kind of specs are really needed for a laptop. In some fields I may need to render stuff or need actual processing power, but for humanities, I have no idea. To be honest, I just care that it's portable. Any recommendations for lightweight, thin, somewhat visually appealing laptop? I have no budget requirements, any price goes. [link] [comments]

Repair Laptop or Buy a new one Posted: 27 Nov 2017 01:13 PM PST Hey I have this laptop (HP Pavilion 15-p030nr - Beats Special Edition - 15.6" - A8 5545M - 8 GB RAM - 1 TB HDD) but recently the hard drive died. I took it to a repair shop and it would cost me $130 for their services + the cost of the hard drive I buy (he strongly recommends an SSD). It would come out to ~200-250 depending on the size of the SSD. As a commuter student, I use this laptop while I am at school but have a good desktop at home that I use while I am there. I mostly do my coding assignments on this laptop, so my question is should I get this drive repaired or just buy a new cheaper laptop? If I buy a cheaper laptop for like $150 will it get good enough to program on? Edit: The contents on the laptop right now do not matter to me [link] [comments]
What happens if HP can't fix my laptop? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 01:13 PM PST My 4 month old laptop just decided it no longer wanted to charge the other day and I got in touch with HP support and they are sending me another adapter, even though I tested the adapter with a voltage meter and suspect it's not at fault. I'm assuming that if it still doesn't charge with the new adapter they'll have me send the laptop in. I'm afraid that this is the beginning of the cycle of sending in my laptop only to have it come back with the same issue. My sister had this experience with her Dell ,but I don't think it was still in warrenty, and after the 3rd time sending it in she just gave up and got a new laptop. My laptop still has 8 months left on the warranty so is there a point where they'll just send me a new/refurbished laptop, or will they just keep telling me to send it back until my warranty runs up? Is $1500 Cdn good deal for Carbon X1? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 12:50 PM PST With my EPP through work I can get a 16 gb 256 GB ssd Carbon X1 for about $1500 Plus tax. I know Lenovo inflates prices to make it seem like you're saving more but is this a good deal? [link] [comments]
Does anyone has an ASUS UX303UA with the latest updates installed ? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 12:25 PM PST Hello, I don't know if that's the appropriate sub ( I hope to find people with the same laptop as me there) but I have an UX303UA and i feel like ever since the falls creators update, i've been having issues with my intel GPU driver (hd520). I installed dozens of drivers directly from asus or from intel and the issue is still here : when my laptops goes to sleep for a certain amount of time and i wake it up, the iGPU won't work for video acceleration with windows apps (edge, movies, word), still works in chrome/vlc. It's easy to miss, i use chrome and I noticed it only 1 week after I updated. The thing is i'm not 100% sure I didn't have the issue before. My question is : if you have the same laptop with the latest update, can you play a .mkv/mp4 file from the movies app after letting your laptop sleep for like 3h ? I'm really close to clean installing windows but i've got some important stuff to do + finals before the end of december so i'll probably wait till then. Thanks :) [link] [comments]

Need Help fixing A Dell inspiron laptop Posted: 27 Nov 2017 07:59 AM PST Hey guys. I recently received a Dell Inspiron 15-5547 for free from a guy I know. Said it wouldn't boot up anymore. After reinstalling some ram in it, I turn it on to receive one beep, which says that the bios checksum is in progress or has failed. I've tried all the guides online to restore the bios, but have been unable to make the HDR and rom files required to make a bios repair tool. Can anyone give me any suggestions on what I can try. I really don't want to toss a perfectly good laptop otherwise, and a whole motherboard replacement is out of the question, since I already have a decent enough laptop, and a new motherboard that I would actually consider is $250+ Thanks you guys in advance. Edit: can't flair this since I'm using reddit app. Sorry. [link] [comments]
Does Anyone have a laptop with an Intel pentium n4200? If so, is it any good? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 11:27 AM PST All it needs to run is Chrome (Facebook, YouTube etc.) and the very occasional Word document (it's also paired with a Geforce 810M card and 8 gigs of ram) so it should be good enough I guess? I don't know, when it comes to lower end hardware I'm completely lost. Some advice will be greatly appreciated. Here's a link to the laptop in question [link] [comments]

Is Dell Inspiron 13 i3378-3340GRY-PUS 2 in 1 PC A good laptop? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 11:05 AM PST I want to get a new laptop for my mom. She would just be streaming the web, skyping, and just overall learning how to use a computer (and she wants the laptop to be touchscreen). Would this laptop last long or do you guys recommend something better? Here is the link to the deal: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/d/dell-inspiron-13-i3378-3340gry-pus-2-in-1-pc/8wfkrz8dbsjr?activetab=pivot:overviewtab [link] [comments]
Laptop vs Desktop Performance (plus some general questions) Posted: 27 Nov 2017 11:04 AM PST With roughly the same specs, approximately how many more fps does desktop average compared to laptop? Does desktop in general also have a lot more stable fps? i.e. less fluctuation in fps, hence lowered standard deviation value [link] [comments]
AMD Radeon RX 560 4GB vs NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 2GB Posted: 27 Nov 2017 10:42 AM PST Which is the more powerful/better GPU? The GTX 1050 ranks higher but I can't find any benchmarks for the RX 560. It seems like the ranking is base on some guesswork. Does anyone know were I can find benkmarks for the laptop RX 560? [link] [comments]

Posted: 27 Nov 2017 09:04 AM PST Hey im looking to buy a laptop, but have noooooo idea which to get, and since it is cyber monday, I feel like it is a good day to ask. Here are my specifications. * Total budget and country of purchase: -USA, $400-800 range- Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. it would be nice to have a 2 in 1, but with my price range i dont believe thats available. CD drive is preferable. Battery life is not a huge worry. How important is weight and thinness to you? non important Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Preferably windows, but any works Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. No smaller than 1024x768 Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be doing video and photo editing, with small light games. Programs: the adobe usuals. (Photoshop, illustrate, etc.) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Light games (minecraft, stardew vally, pokemon TCG,) no less than 30 fps. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Like mentioned before, CD drive is preferable, but anything after that is just bonus. And not really too fond of a touch screen. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thats just about it. I do enjoy HP computers, but thats just because they are the only ones ive used. Any recent model MAC is a big no-no. I am not sure how much these computers run for, but if you have found a good one that is more than $800, please let me know. But don't go to crazy with the pricing. If there are any good deals for cyber monday, even better! Thank you so much in advance! [link] [comments]
Which gaming laptop is worth buying? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 09:01 AM PST I've narrowed it down to two, from the uk, not willing to go beyond the most expensive one and just as a note these are both 15% discount at the moment, not sure if it'll show that on the links. http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=2GQ08EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB £1,189 http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=2HQ93EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB £976 The first is more pricey, but comes with the i7-7700 instead of the i5-7300. Both sporting a gtx 1060 w/ 6gb dedicated ram. However the i7 has 16gb of ram and a 256 gb ssd + 1tb hdd. Whereas the i5 only sports 8gb and 1tb hdd. I'm looking to livestream/record/video edit on occasion, play video games. Mainly slightly dated, perhaps a few of the slightly newer games but not many. Also use it for all other tasks you'd do with a laptop. Just not sure which is more fit for purpose or worth the money. [link] [comments]

Posted: 26 Nov 2017 11:29 PM PST So originally I was going to buy a Gigabyte Aero 14 with a 1060 6gb in it. Now my prioties might have changed as I got thinking if I'm travellling for a year or more I might not have the time to game or use such a laptop to its potential. Anyways I found a deal on a ideapad 720s with an 7 8550u 8gb ram and a 256gb ssd. Equipped in this is a mx150. How is the mx150 for gaming? I know I'd have to trade off capabilities but if I can swing it I might be able to get this ideapad for <$700 CAD How would it handle in say cod ww2, watch dogs 2, South Park fractured but whole, Battlefront 2, etc? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 12:30 AM PST I have a dell xps with a 960m - i don't play games but I do use photoshop. Recently I started having problems with the 960m and disabled it - am i missing out performance wise now? (to what extent is it used outside gaming?) Additionally, if i have it replaced, is that straight forward or is my hdd going to be wiped? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
