Android is a lot messier since adaptive icons Posted: 27 Nov 2017 02:55 PM PST I've just realised whilst playing about with a few launchers just what a sorry state Android's app icons are currently in. I've been using an icon pack for quite a while now so I hadn't noticed what a mess they'd become. I never used to bother with icon packs back in the day because it would always bother me when apps weren't supported by them but nowadays I have to say I think icon packs are a necessity. Ignoring the fact that I hate the circle icons, there's just no way these can be seen as good design. Some apps make full use of the circle (these look the best IMO) but some apps just have their old icon slapped inside a white circle. This sort of works for apps like GMail and Calendar, but when you get apps like Amazon or LinkedIn that give us a square icon within a circle it just looks terrible. Throw in the rest of the apps that have made no attempt to implement adaptive icons and we're left with an ugly mess far times worse than what we ever used to have in the days of Marshmallow. This is just with the circle style too. Things get even worse with some of the other styles. I'll let this screenshot speak for itself. Switching to teardrop shows that a lot of apps ONLY have a circle icon (a poor attempt to pretend they're adopting adaptive icons) and then you get abominations like the previously mentioned LinkedIn. I hate to bring Apple into this since customisation on an iPhone is pretty much non-existent but at least the icons on iOS stay consistent. Sorry for the rant, I just felt the need to open up a discussion about how a great idea can be do poorly implemented. [link] [comments]

Oxygen OS Oreo still uses the Settings app from Nougat Posted: 27 Nov 2017 04:13 PM PST I'm currently running Oxygen OS Open Beta 18 (based on Android 8.0.0) on my OnePlus 3T. This is what the Settings app look like: image. It has the exact same UI from the Nougat-based ROMs when this link should be the interface for Oreo. [link] [comments]

Can we all take a second to appreciate LG's flagship, the G6 is still BlueBorne vulnerable Posted: 27 Nov 2017 10:16 AM PST A couple variants are on November/October security patch but a lot of us are still on July I think I'm finally going to sell my G6 and move onto something else. What do you guys recommend? I love absolutely everything about the G6 hardware wise, the software updates is the only thing that's got me making this decision. After paying £550 for it a few months ago I feel like I've been absolutely robbed The build quality, the screen, the extra wide angle lens, iP68 rating, the design and the size of the phone are perfect for me Whatever I move onto, I'll definitely miss the extra wide angle lens. The Nokia 8 seems perfect but it's just hideous - I can't go from no chin to double chin Seeing as Samsung have stepped up their game, the S8 is currently in my sights [link] [comments]

Thoughts about the Essential Phone after a few days Posted: 27 Nov 2017 07:36 PM PST Sorry for the length, but I wanted to bring up a point that maybe hasn't been touched on regarding this phones size as well as just some of my overall impressions of the device. Please note that I got this phone for $120 via the Sprint strangeness, so my opinion is likely also colored by the fact this was a bargain. First and foremost, this phone is so much smaller than what I'm used to (Mate 9, Moto X 2015, OPO), that it almost feels reminiscent of the original Moto X; You know, the one to which everyone points when saying, "Why are phones so big? I want something manageable in one hand!". This is that phone, if not, perhaps, the Xperia Compact. Here, you're trading off an excellent camera for excellent build quality, and what appears to be pretty responsive and active development. I love the display on this thing; and it wasn't until my OP5T arrived that I was able to really see a noticeable difference between this one and an OLED display. The contrast is surprisingly good, and I feel as if Essential used a thinner pane of gorilla glass to give it that 'painted on the glass' look that is so ubiquitous of Iphones. The performance kinda sucks. This has basically the same specs as the OP5T and every other flagship from this year, but it hiccups, stutters, and sometimes outright crashes. I have hope that this will get fixed, but you shouldn't consider any phone based on an internet stranger's hope. The camera isn't great, and there's some debate as to how much of that is processing vs hardware. I've used the GCam. And though it is a bit better; it's still janky. The screen freaks out when you rotate from portrait to landscape, focus times are pretty poor and I can't really find a consensus online as to what developer settings in GCam I should set (some result in a perpetually black viewfinder..). I personally don't really care about the camera too much. I bought my Mate 9 for the camera and the battery life, but found that I didn't take that many photos anyhow. I'm sure I'll regret this a bit the next time I go on vacation. I actually think the audio quality over the USB C to 3.5mm jack is some of the best I've heard in a while (take that with a grain of salt, as my aforementioned devices weren't known for their stellar DACS). And, apparently Essential is able to update the firmware on that little guy, so who knows, maybe it'll get better. I'd like to see some technical rundown as to the quality of these things. I read that the adapter used with the Pixel 2/XL is especially good, but others have complained about mic gain.. so I dunno. Nothing particularly scientific, but this might be an interesting avenue for others in hardware development. I get it, everyone wants a headphone jack, but I've personally never used wired headphones while the device was charging, and now my headphones are plugged into the bottom of the device, like g-d intended. My use case is obviously different than many others, again, this just doesn't bother me. The build quality on this thing feels amazing. It feels more premium than the OP5T, IMO, and damn nicer than any of the glass Samsung devices that have arrived this year. The ceramic has this almost copper tint that looks so classy to me, rather than the usual pitch-black stealth design I usually go for. The bottom firing speaker isn't as terrible as I thought it would be. One of the reasons I loved my Mate 9 was for the dual speakers (albeit one is a tweeter and only while in landscape), but this phone is pretty close in volume, while sounding just a bit more tinny. I was 100% over the notch, which I thought I'd hate, within about an hour of using it. The screen being pulled up all the way to the corners looks so slick, and I don't feel like I'm missing out on much by having the notch there. I actually prefer it when the status bar is left black with just the icons floating in high contrast, rather than when the app has dynamic element coloring. To each his/her own, but the thing looks slick. I got my Mate 9 for about 750 via import to the US (I wanted the black version with the extra RAM and storage) and I didn't really bat an eye over the price. It was a super premium device, at what I felt was a fair price for the specs with an awesome camera and an OS in which I could theme-away the ugly. I just got an OP5T for $500, which is a great price for a device that just flies. I'm selling the Mate 9, and returning the OP5T, because I enjoying using the Essential phone that much. Despite its quirks, it's just such a joy to use. Ultimately, a phone is a very personal device that you're going to be holding as much as you're going to be looking at and interacting with. I feel as if Essential nailed the design so well that I'm willing to give them a chance to fix their quirks with updates; Especially at $120, but to be fair, after having used the phone, I'd say $400-500 is pretty fair given the competition. Gboard no longer respects personal dictionary shortcuts? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 05:16 AM PST So I've had a personal dictionary for years now and Google continues to restore this for each new phone I get. I had always found this to be very useful because within the personal dictionary, I had created a few shortcuts. So for example, typing two letters would auto-suggest my whole email address. Or typing "ie" would auto-suggest i.e. However, none of these shortcuts seem to work anymore. Maybe Google has replaced the use of shortcuts with machine learning instead? I'm not sure — and while the keyboard is fantastic and does have very good auto-suggest and auto-correct, the lack of shortcuts use is really annoying because especially with longer things (like my email address), it was incredibly useful to be able to type two letters to get this. Now it doesn't work. Anyone else a user of shortcuts via the personal dictionary and seeing the same thing? Maybe there's a setting I have to re-enable? I'm curious what others have experienced.
