    I've never used Cortana

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 10:45 AM PDT

I've been using Windows 10 since it was released (and now Windows 11 on my home PC), and I've never used Cortana. I had never used such a thing in previous versions of Windows, and I just never tried Cortana as I felt like I haven't really needed it. I wonder how many people actually use Cortana?

Remove Web Links from Windows 10 & 11 Start Menu

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 12:39 PM PDT

I was tired of those stupid web search links that pop up when trying to search for an application or file on my computer through the start menu so I found a group policy change you can implement to block them!

Be warned that it does require using Group Policy Editor so I would not recommend this for beginners: https://www.ghacks.net/2015/06/23/how-to-disable-web-search-in-windows-10s-start-menu/

Here are the steps from their page:

    1. To open the Group Policy Editor, tap on the Windows-key, type gpedit.msc and hit enter. Note that the editor is (likely) only included in Pro and Enterprise versions and not in Windows 10 Home. If you run home, check out the other methods listed below instead.

    2. Browse to the following path using the left sidebar: Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search

    3. Locate "Do not allow web search" and double-click it. Switch the preference to enabled.

    4. Locate "Don't search the web or display web results in Search and double-click it. Switch the preference to enabled.

    5. Locate "Don't search the web or display web results in Search over metered connections" and double-click it. Switch the preference to enabled.

This method worked in earlier builds of Windows 10 and it is very likely that it will work in newer builds as well.

This made my start menu MUCH more usable, hopefully you guys find it helpful as well!

Anyway to get Win11 to ignore a older driver update?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 05:55 AM PDT

Win 11 keep pushes through a old video driver, and then the Intel Support Assistant pushed the current driver. I do not see an option to make Win11 ignore the old driver. Can anyone please help? The attached show the new driver in Device Mgr, while Windows update is trying to push a very old version.

MS Apparently REALLY , REALLY wants me to setup XBox

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 09:35 AM PDT

Just got a new laptop with Win 11 preinstalled for the first time. Cool. Went through the multiple updates and reboots. OK, used to it.

In all of this I have continued to unpin the XBox app from the toolbar only for it to reappear after each reboot.

Is there a trick (short of uninstalling) to keep it from showing up again?

    kernel debug of Windows 3.1

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 01:26 AM PDT

I'm trying (for fun, what else can be? XD) to debug the kernel of Windows 3.1

I'll like to discover how Windows made some of their functionalities at the beginning, and only with an static analysis it's much for me.

I'm searching in internet and I've seen a lot of file like autoexec.bat, win.ini and system.ini that can be configured to load symbols from the disk installation and to enable de kernel debug vía COM port, but I haven't seen so much documentation about how it works and how can I enable it.

There is here any old school "hacker" with some more information? :P

Language icon in the upper left corner

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 10:43 PM PDT

Im using windows 7 in my arcade cab. I did an attemp to hide the OS as much as possible when booting straigt to the emulator but for some reason the language icon appears in the upper left corner for a few secs when booting or shutting down. Anyone knows how to hide this ?

The funny thing is it wasn't even there before I began to make the steps to hide the os. I must have enabled it by accident.

    Thanks for any help!

Weird bug where there is no audio from any application except the system sounds

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 11:34 AM PDT

Just booted the laptop, and I hear a windows notification, but then nothing. I checked youtube, a game, unplugging and repluging my headset, and also the sound settings, and audio mixer. Nothing. And YET i could hear the sounds of notifications, and also the sound when i change the volume.

What i did is just install the driver from my laptop's website, rebooted, and there is no more problem.

My question is, how could this be? And why would the problem come from the driver when it's obviously a software problem?

Can someone explain this? (It's the same disk but first I selected all files and then clicked properties, then on the second image I clicked right away on disk properties. I already have hidden files showing on) W10
