    Laptop for Design work

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 03:02 AM PDT

Hello everyone. I need your help with making a choice for a laptop and I after checking through what is being offered, I've circled down my search to this one, this one, ..or this one. I should mention that I haven't changed my laptop in a couple of years, whose manufacturer is dell, so I find I keep restricting my search to their model. My budget is 850USD max and I'm open to an otherwise better/different device if it matches my needs. The laptop should be a windows laptop, have a great screen to help with my design work, enough memory or the ability to upgrade it manually, and excellent battery life. I would also prefer the laptop to be slim and lightweight.

I know it's probably a stretch but you guys are my last hope in making a smart choice.

    Plese help. 😥

Laptop for light video editing and just general work

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 06:02 AM PDT

So I'm looking for a laptop for light video editing and then just general work, web browsing etc maybe a game of poker every now and then.

These are the options I've come up with, all of these I can get for about the same price from different various locations.

    Samsung - Galaxy Book Flex2 Alpha 13.3" QLED Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i7-1165G7 - 16GB Memory - 512GB SSD - Mystic Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09BWRXKCW/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_RJVVJD19ABDR3CVM0H3F

This Lenovo would actually be the cheapest of the 4.

    Lenovo Yoga 6 13 2-in-1 13.3" Touch Screen Laptop - AMD Ryzen 7 - 16GB Memory - 512GB SSD - Abyss Blue with Fabric Cover https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09BYW1NJG/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_AGK69Y3YWMB93F7QSWK8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-galaxy-book2-360-13-3-amoled-touch-screen-laptop-intel-12th-gen-core-i7-evo-platform-16gb-memory-512gb-ssd-graphite/6501594.p?skuId=6501594&loc=pdpShare&ref=app_android

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-galaxy-book2-360-13-3-amoled-touch-screen-laptop-intel-12th-gen-core-i5-evo-platform-8gb-memory-256gb-ssd-graphite/6501585.p?skuId=6501585&loc=pdpShare&ref=app_android

This next one is a cheap option if the first ones are overkill

    Samsung - Galaxy Book Flex Alpha 2-in-1 13.3" QLED Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i5 - 8GB Memory - 256GB SSD - Royal Silver - NP730QCJ-K01US https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DC4Z97R/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_S89YJ9RGMH9EZJHV213J

Any help is appreciated. Also if you have any other suggestions in the same price range. I'm kind of looking for a 2in1 but it's not necessary.

Performance > build quality > battery life > form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not the most important, but important. Will be carried around campus.

His school is saying specifically Intel i7, why not AMD? I took a stab at building a Thinkpad, realizing I didnt use a Ryzen 7 and instead did 5, but thoughts/feedback are appreciated: https://imgur.com/agzku1x

Laptop for remote work and school

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 05:59 AM PDT

Hi! I'm looking for help finding a laptop that will suit my needs for remote work and online school. I'll only use the laptop for work when I'm not near my desktop, so not too much, but definitely some. Then I'm doing an online graduate program that will mostly be done in the laptop. I'll mostly be using Microsoft Office, and then obviously the internet browser - my work platform is through there.

My top brand is Lenovo. Looking for 512 SSD, under $700, but that's about all I have. Any help would be appreciated!

Laptop for light gamer and architecture student?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 03:35 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

United States, budget is MAXIMUM $2000

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

      Performance and reliability

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I will need to carry it around to classes so something lightweight is definitely preferred!

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      YES! 15.6" preferred, nothing larger

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

YES! I would be using CAD programs like AutoCAD, Rhino, Sketchup, and Revit heavily. I do also play some games and would be using Adobe Photoshop, Indesign, and possibly Illustrator.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I really only play vanilla Minecraft, The Sims 3 (modded), and Skyrim (modded) TS3 is inevitably laggy but i would like the other games to be running at at least FPS 60.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good keyboard and build quality are super important, but I don't care about touch screen or other things like that.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Some more nit-picky things I want to mention is that I do not want to buy from MSI, and that I don't like the look of your average chunky gaming laptop. The latter isn't really a huge deal breaker but looks are also important to me!

Thanks so much for your help!!

looking for a laptop with good longevity(3-4y at least)

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 05:46 AM PDT

Which of this laptops has less quality control issues and last longer? Legion 5 /Asus tuf a15 2021 / Asus g14 2020 1650/

My budget is 800-1000$~ but things are more expensive here so my choices are limited to this models: , legion 5 11400h rtx 3050ti 165hz/Asus g14 amd 3800hs gtx1650 120hz/Asus tuf a15 2021 3050ti 144hz

My uses: casual gaming and daily use

Legion 5 is great choice for me but I'm abit concerned about long term use and durability (charing port breaking, mother board issue etc).

Customer service in my 3rd world country is very bad and can't refund laptops after 7 days(+3rd party warranty).

Is Acer Swift 3 a good laptop?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 05:31 AM PDT

I have an Acer Aspire 4752G that I bought in 2011. It still works fine but the age of it makes me think I should get a new laptop.

I'm looking at the Acer Swift 3. Does anyone have any reviews on it?

I'm also open to suggestions of laptops in a similar price range because I'm a poor student :(

I use my laptop for school work mostly.

Travel ultrabook "do it all" for about 1200 EUR in Italy

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 03:17 AM PDT

    Budget: 1200 EUR in Italy

    Used: No

Form factor: Ultrabook - Balance between portability and performance, It will be used for travel and I have a powerful desktop at home so I would prioritize build quality/battery/portability over raw performance.

Weight and thinnes: Important, preferably under 1.5kg

    Screen size: 14"

Usecase: Photoshop, web browsing, media cosnumption, light gaming (im not looking to run AAA games high res+high quality with high frames but it should run comp games on low quality with high frames)

Games: I play a variety of games ranging from Fortnite to Gwent, although I'm not looking for a gaming machine it should run Fortnite low settings at the screen refresh rate (ideally close to 90fps/hertz)

Specifics: USB-C charging, Decent port selection (hdmi not necessary if thunderbolt present, at least one usb 3), Finger print reader, good build quality, decent webcam, dedicated graphics ideally, Bluethooth, min 16gb ram.

I found this PC that fits all but the USB-C charging.

Work laptop with a good camera and monitor

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 07:53 AM PDT

    I am looking for a laptop mainly for work and my main criteria are;

    • Have to have a good processor for Excel/XML files
    • Good camera
    • Preferably with a 120/144hz monitor (I got so used to this refresh rate)
    • Preferably lightweight but not too important
    • Preferably 13-14 inches, but 15.6 is also ok

The company will pay for it and my budget is around € 800 - 1200.

Laptop for virtual machines, training Linux/Windows $2000-$3000 USD (including warranty)

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 07:50 AM PDT

    The Form

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**
    • $2000-$3000 USD including a 3-4 year warranty
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?**
    • Yes. If they offer a 2-3-4 year warranty.
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**
    • Battery life is important mostly to watch 4K videos without plugging in.
    • Build quality is really important. I already have a Lenovo piece of junk.
    • I don't need the latest CPU but since 12th gen Intel is out there, I am looking at it. But for my needs maybe I can get a better price on a 11th gen Intel.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?-Lower Weight is more important than thickness. I don't need super light weight.
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**
    • 15" or larger but battery life is more important than screen size. I'd like UHD, 4K etc. I've seen OLED but I've seen some negative comments about them.
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**
    • No CAD, no video, no photo, no gaming. Some occasional Virtual Machines under Linux or Windows to train on things like Oracle/SQL/Postgres. Maybe occasionally do some programming.
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**
    • Zaxxon
    • I have considered buying an older gaming laptop as an every day machine if it has better CPU and memory and storage config. I wouldn't mind a 11th gen Intel CPU but I don't think I want to go back to 10th gen.
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**
    • I would love to have an optical drive (Blu Ray) but I don't know of anyone who still makes a laptop with one. I have a Lenovo touch screen but I never use it.
    • Good mousepad is important. I prefer something with left/right mouse buttons so it's not hard to use.
    • Keyboard is important.
    • Build quality is important. I don't want to spend a lot of money on junk. I would like a laptop that I could use for 3-4 years.
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**
    • It's been a few years since I bought a laptop. I started doing a lot on my phone but you can't study databases or programming on a phone.
    • I bought a Lenovo Flex 5 2 or 3 years ago. It was poor quality, bad battery, wifi stops working, fan is loud. I gave it to my spouse to use. So I've been using a very old Dell XPS M1210.
    • My target machine is 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD, 4K/3.5K screen. Of course I can buy a laptop and upgrade components but I'd rather not do that on a new machine. I use those specs because I want something I could use for 3-4 years before I upgrade again.
    • I would like to find a company that offers an onsite warranty repair service.
    • I have only looked at HP or Dell so far but I'm open to other systems.
    • I have considered Apple but I won't go back to a 13" screen. I've considered MacBook 16" but I read about quality problems.
    • I may upgrade to Google Fiber this year so I'd like a laptop that supports Wifi 6 if I can find it.

    1400$CAD max. Canada

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    1. Performance 2. Battery Life 3. Build Quality

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I don't want it to be too light or too thin.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    1. 17" 2. 16"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I am not currently doing any editing but I would like to get myself into it. I'm an ex-gamer, but as life is going for me, I don't plan on really going back to it, but I would like my laptop to be able to.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I want to be comfortable while using it. I understand 1400$CAD might be overkill for my needs but I'm used to fast technology. I will definetely take into consideration cheaper laptops. I have 10 years of studying ahead of me, so I would like this laptop to last at least 4-5 years.

    Windows

Looking for a laptop that is very light, has excellent battery life, and has good enough performance to connect to an external monitor without struggling/lagging/heating up.

2-in-1 would be nice but not necessary.

Won't really be gaming. May need to run heavy software occasionally and run lengthy Matlab scripts.

I also enjoy watching high res videos.

I think that perf wise they are pretty much similar, the screen here is the major difference, never had a 16:10 so i don t know how it looks and is it practical or not (i do some cad and sim work). Posted: 03 Jun 2022 02:28 AM PDT

    **LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE**

    * **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**

As Cheap as possible, AUD, if you MUST have a number, under $600AUD

    * **Are you open to refurbs/used?**

If it reduces the price tenfold, yes.

    * **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**

I would be inclined to say Any, this is a laptop that has one purpose and one purpose only, use better discrestion.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Preferably light, don't care how thick.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

1920x1080 minimum, don't care for the actual screen size.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

    Roll20

    Some form of PDF reader/editor

    Firefox

If anything at all I would prefer 60fps solid doing roll20.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

As long as it does the task I buy it for, I have no requirements in mind.

As stated in the title, this laptop is exclusively for D&D and Roll20, gaming is not my focus with this laptop.

another confused person between G14 and x13

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 02:09 AM PDT

Hello all, I'm still confused between these two products after the weeks of research. No matter which one I buy, I feel like I'll regret afterwards so am starting to losing it. %95 of my savings will be gone after the purchase so it is quite stressfuI. I need someone to see what I want or need objectively.

First of all, I'm not looking for a laptop to play Cyberpunk, AC or RDR2. I casually play LoL, Genshin and maybe Witcher 3. I don't want to play the games at the highest settings. After 2 week, I'll become a senior at college and then go to abroad for almost 5 months to study. Thus, I need a portable, lightweight and business level laptop. Ultrabooks are nice but I don't think they can run games and then stay cool. I'll be mainly coding, watching tutorial videos and TV shows/movies.

It's not my main profession, however, I like to design some stuff in Photoshop and Illustrator when needed. Not 3D btw. Oh and also no, I don't paint or draw anything with stylus.

Video editing would be nice too but 4K is not really needed.

So my biggest concern is that, both of these units have heating issues as far as I've read from the forums and subreddits. Especially x13... I don't want an laptop turns itself into an oven. I want to do my studies/job in the mornings at my school or cafes and then watch some movies or play some casual games at nights.

Btw, I'm considering to buy the x13 without the eGPU. So consider this comparison accordingly.

    Flow x13 Specs: - R9 5900HS - 16 GB LPDDR4X RAM - 1920x1200/120Hz/16:10 - GTX 1650 - 1 TB SSD

    G14 (2021) Specs: - R7 5800HS - 16 GB DDR4 RAM - 1920x1080/144Hz/16:9 - RTX 3050 - 1 TB SSD

Why I want x13 over G14? - 1920x1200 - 16:10 and 120Hz Display - Lighter and thinner - Smaller charge (type C) - Tent and Tablet mode (It's not a must yet still is cool) - Better CPU - GTX 1650 runs cooler(?) - Has webcam unlike the G14 - Cheaper

Why I want G14 over x13? - 144Hz - Thicker but looks more sturdy and durable(?) - Better cooling(?) - RTX 3050/3050Ti... but do I need it? - AniMe Matrix is so cool - Not a finger print magnet - More ports - Slightly bigger screen - Better battery

    Please help ;_;

    Need Laptop Recommendations

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 12:28 AM PDT

Hi! I'm an upcoming freshmen for college and i've never had a laptop in my life so I have no clue where to start. I've done a bit of my own research, but thought it would be best to go straight to the people with experience and can help with ones to stay clear of and ones that may be hidden gems. My budget would probably max out at $2,000 (i want to invest in something long lasting.), but ones on the lower side are good too. Brand doesn't matter as long as y'all find it does the job. Thank you in advance!

      • Total Budget approx $500-600 USD
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?*\*

      • YES. Pinch a penny extraordinaire
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

      • No preference. 2 in 1 & Ultrabook fine.

****How important is weight and thinness to you?****Thinness not a concern. Weight not really a concern. I'd take a heavy, thick unit with better build quality than a light, thin unit.

    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*

      • 15-17 inch screen preferred (Color accurate if possible)
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\*

      • No gaming, photo editing. Extremely high volume editing.
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\*

      • N/A
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\*

      • Literally just revolving around budget. Looking for older models for best deals.

      • Down for old model laptops, really good deals on the market in the used market is preferred. Looks like Dell Precisions are PERFECT for the most part but wonder if there is any model/other similar laptops doing it similarly. Thank you!

Hi, Engineering student needs a laptop.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 07:13 PM PDT

Hey guys I'm gonna enter uni this fall and am in need of a laptop. My course fees are astronomical so I wanna be thoughtful and not get a super expensive laptop but one that's good enough for my engineering needs.

Can anyone help me find a reasonable laptop with reasonable specs that don't cost me an arm and a leg?

AAA games I don't play I play mostly small titles like WOTB, WOTPC and stuff only.

I just want a laptop that is perfect for Autocad and stuff. Thanks Portability and battery life are king.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Under 2k USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

yes (as long as it works well I'm open to anything)

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I prioritize performance, battery, and build quality in order. I would not like a 2 in 1 as I would need to run adobe suite as well as other large programs on it. Would need acceptable to very good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Somewhat important. As long as I can fit it in my backpack and carry it around campus I'm happy.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15.6" or less

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

adobe suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, animation, and aftereffects), light gaming like Minecraft. No bigger than the Sims (19 GB on my current laptop)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Minecraft, Sims 4, Wizard 101, the occasional steam game that I'll delete after I'm done with it

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Not looking for anything too fancy, I would need a good disk space as I will be saving a lot of my files and illustrations to my laptop

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Thank you for helping, as for specifics I was recommended to get 16GB ram, at least an intel i5 quad-core processor, or AMD ryzen 5 equivalent, a dedicated GPU is also recommended (but not 100% necessary if it breaks the bank), AT LEAST 500GB of storage on the SSD
