Internet dead spot on 3rd floor, is mesh the best option?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 09:35 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

    Non-technical person here.

Wifi works great throughout the house besides a room on the 3rd floor where we will soon have an office (no ethernet jack in that room). 3rd floor bedroom (not the office) also has fantastic speed being above the router.

-Bell home hub 4000 modem in the basement.

    -Bell 1 gig fibre

-basement office on Wifi (modem on other side of basement) i get around 300 Mbps (wired is over 1 gig).

-main floor above modem i get 500 Mbps

-3rd floor office i get 30 Mbps. Devices have issues staying connected, massive buffering even for youtube. That will be an office soon and it needs to improve dramatically.

What are my choices? I spent the morning reading on mesh systems, is that the best way to go?

I actually have an ethernet drop in my kitchen and on the 3rd floor in my bedroom (nothing in the office).

Would a TpLink X60 make sense? 1 module attached to the basement router, 1 wired into the kitchen ethernet and 3rd one wired in to my bedroom ethernet and i hope that it reaches the office...would it reach 30 feet"ish" away?

Other choice which i don't want to do (but i would) because of price is the Netgear OrbiRBK753, 3 pack is on sale but still double the x60 (yikes). My thinking is we are just renting and do have a few ethernet plugs to wire in the X60 (read its bad wireless). If we move and have zero ethernet at least the RBK 753 would workout in the future.

I also see the 2 pack TP Link X90 on sale.

I'm so confused but need help!

    Thank you.

Rsync/SSH to network VPN connection - speeds affected or full LAN

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 07:14 AM PDT

tldr: If I login to remote server via VPN and transfer files on the remote LAN, is speed based on the local LAN speed or is it influenced by WAN connection?

This will show some of my ignorance of basic networking protocol, I appreciate any response.

Situation: remote access to LAN via Wireguard VPN

**Target source and destination for Rsync are on same LAN** but login point is remote over the VPN. (i.e. I'm accessing remote LAN via VPN but computer and storage server are both on the same LAN)

Question: If I initiate an rsync copy, is the copy speed based on LAN speed (i.e. once initiated the data transfer does not traverse the VPN and so 1G/10G speeds are possible even if VPN connection is much slower? I think the answer is yes since my SSH session is just to initiate the terminal and all other traffic is local to the LAN at that point, but I want to verify.

Q: Can I re-purpose Cat 5e telephony wire for data communications wire? A:

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 11:48 AM PDT

I browse technology boards and forums from time to time through my day. Every once in awhile you'll come across an interesting piece of news or information. Yet, usually, its the same things posted, the same questions, the same setups. Same, same, same.

One question I've been noticing a lot lately is, "Hey can I use these old phone cables as internet cables?" along with a picture of cat5e cables terminated at the wall with RJ11 ports and on the other end a punch block.

The answer is YES*. Of course*.

For the last 20 years or so, home builders have been using cat 5/5e in place of cat 3 for four main reasons. Excluding de facto standards that are called for each job type of course.

This is why cat 5e is used.

    1. Cat 5/5e is sold at almost every Big Box home store and online.
    2. The cost has come down so much, that it doesnt make sense to buy more expensive specializedcat 3 bundles, when cat 5/5e works and is a better rated wire. It's hard to even find cat 5 anymore,as most places split the difference and carrry cat 5e, instead of 3,5, or 6.
    3. It's hard to get cat 3, as its basically a special order. (It's often not carried at Big Box, and if theydo, requires a special order.) And often, hard to find online.
    4. It's intentional so the homeowner can convert. Many techs know that the cat5e can be multipurposed from telephone, data, security, to even stereo/audio.

I mean, almost anything requiring low voltage excluding data wire will use cat 5e, this includes security installs, garage door install, even your door bell.

Why? Because a Low Voltage installer then only needs to carry one or two reels of cat 5e, and it can do nearly every install. It contains enough pairs to do almost anything required. And it's actually often better than the wire required, I.E Cat 3.

    So, what's required?

It's hard to say, since every topology may be different. But the basic topology has these things in common.

    1. Cat5/5e used as the medium to transport some type of data, typically for telephony.
    2. It's terminated with a/an rj11 (telephone) wall plate, and sometimes rg6 (coaxial cable). Sometimes there is rj11/and rj45 combo plates, both using cat5e.
    3. The other end is either terminated to a small punch block, or is left un-terminated and dangling.

    So, how do you convert?

    1. Replaced the wall plates with RJ45 ports, and any other combo required (rg6 etc). Terminate the wire to the new plate following the TIA 568.B diagram. I prefer clip side down when terminating RJ45 heads as a way to ensure both ends match.
    2. Screw the wall plate back on and go to the other side of the wires.
    3. This is where things often change. If this end of your cables are terminated to a punch block, you can leave it like this. The next step is to get a switch, and connect the punch blocks corresponding rj45 port to a port to the switch. This will require pre-made patch cables or making your own. If you have unterminated wires, you can do a few things here. One, you can terminate them with RJ45 heads, and plug them directly into a switch or terminate them to a patch panel and then into a switch.

In most cases unless you own a McMansion, cat 5e will be good for at least Gigabit speeds. It can do higher speeds the shorter the distance the data travels between nodes, I.E Computer, Switch, Router, Server, Computer. In fact, cat 5e can do 10 Gigabit short distances, about 35 feet or so.

Lastely, you always have the option of pulling new cabling, like cat 6a, using the old cat 5e. There are various techniques, which google and youtube are your best bet. This is the best way to future proof without having to cut out new outlets, drill through top plates, fire blocking, etc.

It may even be worth hiring a low voltage tech to do this for you, as the labor cost will be dramatically less. About half, sometimes a third of the cost of doing new runs.

    Examples of Products Required.

I will use Home Depot for product examples.

    Single Port RJ45 Wall Plate

Single Port RJ45 with Single Port RG6 Combo Wall Plate

    RJ45 Heads

Examples of Tools Required. (Buy whatever from where ever you want)

    RJ45 Crimper

    Screw Driver

    Pair tester

    Punch Tool

    Scissors

I suggest a kit like this, which has a crimper, punch down, and stripper.

Examples of Network Equipment Required. (Buy whatever from where ever you want)

    Router

    Switch

    Patch Panel (Feed Through)

PLEASE! Feel free to criticizes and critique. I'll be happy to edit or fix errors. We are all here to learn.

    need some help with VLANs

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 05:32 AM PDT

Hi everyone, Im in need of some help with VLANS as ive never done much like this before

I have a basic setup at home that i would like to create 2 lans for

I have a TPlink ER605 router and Netgear GS325 poe managed switch. Both support vlans as long as you know how to set them up...which i dont

Currently i have on a single lan

4 pcs + handfull of wifi devices 1 server 5 poe cameras

I would like to seperate them so

4 pcs + wifi devices can access the internet and the server Server can access the internet + all devices + poe cameras Poe cameras can write to the server but cannot access the internet or be accessed from the internet

Eventually i would also like a seperate network for all my IOT devices to access the internet but not access my server or pcs. Paranoid maybe? Not sure...

Any insight on how this is done would be great thank you.

    pfSense: No route to host

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 11:03 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I am trying to set up a basic network with Xfinity residential cable internet service to a Netgear CM1000v2 modem, which is in turn connected to a pfSense box. For now I have just been trying to connect my computer to the pfSense directly via ethernet cable, no other switches or APs connected.

    • I was able to get my modem activated with Xfinity, such that I can surf the web when directly connected to it via ethernet cable.
    • I was able to detect and configure the WAN and LAN interfaces in the pfSense console.
    • I was able to connect my laptop to the pfSense via the LAN interface and run the setup wizard with default settings.
    • In the console and web GUI, I can see the WAN and LAN are up, and the WAN is receiving a public IP from the modem (IPv4 and IPv6).
    • Tried to ping an external IP through the console and web GUI and got 100% packet loss and a "no route to host" error.
    • Tried power cycling devices in different orders. Tried rebooting the modem via the Comcast app. No luck. Maybe I'm not waiting long enough between booting up each device?
    • I also can't reach the web GUI for the modem when connected to the pfSense, although it works when connected directly. At times, the IP goes nowhere, and at others it gives me an Xfinity login page instead of Netgear's. My Xfinity/default admin password doesn't let me log into it, so I have no idea what is going on there. I also tried rejecting leases from this IP in my WAN config but it didn't seem to make a difference to anything.
    • I have the WAN set to DHCP on both IPv4 and IPv6. NAT is set to automatic. There are no firewall rules other than blocking private networks and bogon networks.

    Other things I've read here:

    • Disable the private networks rule so the pfSense can get to the modem's GUI. Haven't tried this yet. I wonder if it is blocking more than just GUI access?
    • Turn off WAN monitoring or set to a DNS server address because Comcast drops those pings and pfSense will think the modem is dead. Haven't tried this yet either.

Any ideas what I could be missing here?

MoCA turns off when connecting ethernet

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 09:09 AM PDT

After a lot of research, I've landed on this MoCA setup - https://imgur.com/a/UveCmXh
After adding a filter, replacing the splitter, and enabling MoCA on my router, the Coax light on the adapter finally lights up but as soon as I connect my laptop to the ethernet port of the adapter, the Coax light goes away. The laptop recognizes the ethernet cable but says there's no internet from it. Any idea why this could happen? Do I need any changes to my setup? When the laptop isn't connected, the Coax light on the adapter seems to blink sometimes - is this normal?

Enabled MoCA on the CGN3ACSMR Rogers/Hitron Router
    Splitter - 4 Way Antronix MMC1004H-B 5-1675 MHz MoCA 2.0 Splitter
Filter - PPC SNLP-1GCW MoCA 'POE' Coax Filter
Adapter - ScreenBeam MoCA 2.5 Network Adapter

All of this is on the first floor - there's a Coax cable from the splitter that runs to the third floor which is where I plan to use the adapter after everything is working.

Since this is also a bad spot for WiFi, I have an ethernet going from the Rogers router to my own router on the second floor for WiFi from a central location. Could this be causing issues?

Should I give ReadyNAS 4 Ultra a chance?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 12:27 PM PDT

    Hello,

Sorry for a long post. Even after extensive googling, would really appreciate opinions of fellow datahoarders on this.

I bought ReadyNAS 4 Ultra to put modern hardware inside it, reusing the case. However, upon examining the device, it doesn't look too bad.

My main concern with ReadyNAS 4 Ultra is security. I was pleasantly surprised to see its ancient Atom D410 CPU isn't vulnerable to hardware vulnerabilities typically plaguing x86 CPUs e.g. Spectre&Meltdown, and, unless I misunderstood, the device is upgradeable to latest ReadyNAS OS 6 firmware.

I am still concerned with attack surface presented by feature-rich ReadyNAS compared to DIY option, which I can lock down as hard as I please. Additionally, removable RAM coupled with lack of memory encryption makes the device vulnerable to skilled attacker with physical access, but such attack is a very low risk in my threat model.

    From a NAS, I need:

    • enforced SMB3

    • full-disk encryption

    • serial console

    Speed-wise, I am OK with as low as 50MB/s. Drives are 2x 18TB HC550.

    Hardware I consider putting inside:

    • RK3399 SBC with 4GB RAM

    • SATA controller - 4-port Marvell 88SE9235 or 5-port JMB585

    • 2.5GBe over USB + native GBe

    • 256GB SSD for OS & Syncthing

    • PicoPSU + external 12V power brick

    • isolated USB type C serial console adapter for management

This hardware was originally going into modified PS2 fat case, but after a long discussion tech-savvy friend who deals with 3.5" HDDs on a regular basis (unlike me dealing with SSDs & 2.5" HDDs until now) convinced me my HDD mounts were completely inadequate, and HDDs would vibrate themselves into premature death. ReadyNAS 4 Ultra is what I scored for case on a short notice to address the problem.

What would your advice be? Keep ReadyNAS 4 Ultra intact, messing with its firmware and software - or go ahead and replace the internals with modern RK3399 platform?

New house - where to keep equipment?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 11:42 AM PDT

I'm closing on purchase of a new (to me) house soon and getting ready to run some wiring. I'm having a hard time deciding on where to set up my networking equipment and to terminate my runs of cable. Right now it's a Unifi USG and a 16 port switch and two 5 port Flex switches. Down the line I may upgrade to a UDM Pro and a 24 port rack switch or maybe two if needed.

I am planning on running CAT6A to every upstairs bedroom (via attic) and some key locations downstairs and outside. I'm trying to decide where to terminate all the wiring and keep my USG and switches.

My best choices seem to be:

    • Downstairs laundry room. I can easily get a small rack in there. It's sufficiently out of the way of the main living area. It's a convenient spot to put equipment without detracting from living area. Main issue seems to be power - I have to share a circuit with the washing machine. I'll also need to run tons and tons of cable upstairs which will require a lot of wiring. Not sure if humidity will be an issue but everything ducts to the outside so it's probably fine. I could probably get an electrician to run a line to it as it's not terribly far from the electrical panel. I may be able to splice a new outlet off of a GFCI in the adjacent powder room too.

    • Upstairs bedroom being used as office - no issue with the power circuit being overloaded and I have WAN that can run easily to there. Main issue is that I'm not totally sure that future buyers would want to be forced to put all their network equipment in that bedroom, or that I myself may decide to repurpose that room in the future. I'm not planning to sell any time soon but it's still a consideration.

    • Garage - the obvious concern with this space is heat and humidity. We are in the south so it will get fairly hot. Hard to say how hot yet. Probably not past 100F. It's an attached garage with living space above. I do like the fact that I could essentially have unlimited room and unlimited noise in this space. Not sure if future owners would like this space either.

    • Coat closet - my concerns with this option is that it's very small without ventilation and it's hard to get wiring run into this spot, however I do like that I won't overload power and it's out of the way.

More info on the house: it's in the southern US. Built on a slab and I have no basement. I can't put equipment and wiring runs in the main living areas - good old WAF comes into play.

Suggestions are welcomed. I know it's hard to describe my whole house in a Reddit post but I'd appreciate some general feedback.

Getting full coverage around my home with mesh. Is my approach correct or will this network setup not work how I imagine it will.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 11:26 AM PDT

I don't see why this won't work; but networking things always have something going on that I wasn't ready for.

I asked my contractor to put cat5e connections in every room so I could have internet around the house. So I have Cat5e all terminating in my attic in one spot.

So I want to run a cat5e from the router to the terminations and put a switch there. Then put mesh ap devices on the other ends from there

Modem > Ubiquiti Dream machine > switch > 2 or 3 Mesh AP points

I already own the UDM; but I am open to suggestions for the switch and mesh APs. I don't need advanced options on the APs so more Ubiquiti devices seem unworth the price.

1 AP will be around 3 bedrooms that may all want to be streaming netflix at once. The other AP will be in the living room, and will hit the backyard so my wi-fi smoker, and meat thermometers will be able to report temps to my phone. Then the router is upstairs in a spot where it hits the garage well enough. So I think two will give me full coverage. With a 2000SF range the 25ft radius will saturate the inside of the house with strong connections and the backyard will be well enough covered.

    New Internet Setup

I'm looking to buy a modem and router and was wondering if anyone had some suggestions. I play a more than an average amount of video games and will be wiring my pc into my setup. Our current internet plan will be 100 mbps with xfinity but we are looking to move somewhere else in six months and hopefully bump that up if it's available. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Windows Mobile hotspot with a fix IP and DNS

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 10:41 AM PDT

I was wondering if there is anyway to setup the windows mobile hotspot to always assign a predefined IP to an android device that
connects to it ? Each time the device is connected to my windows Hotspot it has a new IP (192.168.137.... the last digits change each time)
I would like to make this a fixed one for that device "EX: 192.168.137.100"

My second question is: if it's possible to assign a personal DNS to the hotspot. (I want it to use nextdns IP).

At the moment what I am doing is:
Sharing my Ethernet connection through windows mobile hotspot and for it to use my desired DNS I have to change my Ethernet's DNS
manually every time I want to use the hotspot. (which also sets that DNS for my entire windows OS).

I don't mind using free 3rd party software if it's easier and will get the job done.

Broken LAN port on ASUS RT-AC66U

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 10:17 AM PDT

So I have a gen 1 version of this little ASUS router since 2013, it has been up strong despite some well know issues like the broken power button that no longer sticks on the ON position: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/broken-power-button.13601/

The insides of the router also make noise like if 10 different plastic pieces were loose, I can even see some "star shaped" plastic that seems to be residue from manufacturing.... weird but it works.

Today I found a new disturbing issue, LAN port 3, and only that port is stuck at 100mpbs. Connecting the same cable to any other port shows 1 gb, only port 3 seems to be failing.

Is there LAN per port specific page in the asus dashboard? I could not find any. Its not the cable, neither the client device, this is 100% on the router end.

Time to replace it? Right now I am not even using its wireless features because I have a set of DECO M5 / X50 as access points and it works flawlessly.

    Internet speed is terrible!

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 10:00 AM PDT

I have BT gigabit internet (in the UK) which is currently using the given BT modem and router. Doing speed tests I get around 300mbps download and 50mbps right next to the router over wifi. Is this a normal speed?(given there are quite a few devices connected at the same time)

So my issue is occasionally I do get the random buffering on devices. Ps5 is also constantly lagging playing warzone. Does anyone know If the BT hub is just terrible and need to buy a new router? Or any router admin settings I could change to make it better

    Any advice is appreciated! :)

    Google Nest AP and Router

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 06:11 AM PDT

    Hello,

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I am just starting to learn about networking from scratch and I am trying to figure some things out.

I have a set of Google Nest APs in my home. One of them functions as a router. I was wondering if I can do so the router one don't act as a router, but instead just acts as a access point, so I can connect to my main routers default gateway without getting to the Google Nest routers default gateway. I have tried searching for it on the web, but it wasnt as easy to find as I hoped it would be (maybe I'm just searching up nonsense). I am trying to connect them to a Ubiquiti Edgerouter X.

If anyone know how, I would really appreciate some tips so I can look into my main router to do some experiments and just toy around to see what it looks like. In advance, thank you!

Method/app to share a wireless Internet Connection over a wired Router?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 09:51 AM PDT

    Hi,

So the setup is that my main PC gets its internet from a wifi connection to a router in a different room. This PC has a separate router hard-wired to it for gaming, which I then use to connect a different device wirelessly to.

The dedicated link works fine but the connected gaming device then has no internet. Is there a way to fix this?

I've tried ICS and bridging the connections with no luck so far.

    Thanks!

PS Yes, I know this isn't the proper way to set up a network, but I can't get a hard link to the main router from this PC very easily.

Does this type of coax cable have a name?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 09:32 AM PDT

When we moved in to our place last year we started service with Xfinity. (Surprisingly good experience.) I was having some unexplainable packet loss so I contacted Xfinity and they sent out a tech who fixed it with some sort of filter.

It's the fastest internet connection I've ever had.

While he was here, he was going on and on about how great it is that we have a "hard line" connection. (https://imgur.com/a/t0pC8mp)

To me, it just looks like coax running through flexible conduit. Is it something more than that? What might it be called? Could it be contributing to our fast connection? If it might be, I want to install it at my son's place but I wouldn't know what to ask for.

(Google Image Search is convinced that it's a chain link fencing post....)

    Thanks in advance.

Asus Router Traffic Monitor Weird Numbers

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 09:14 AM PDT

On my Asus RT-AC68U, I recently upgraded the firmware to 3.0.0.4.386_48262 (latest) and I noticed that when I go to the Traffic Analyzer > Traffic Monitor, I see these weird numbers, eg. 34,359,738.364.39 GB ? Here is a screenshot.

Should I just interpret this as 34 GB? What is causing this weird error?

EDIT: Actually, the numbers are wrong... I can't be using only 1.27 GB on June 1st.

Unable to run Pi-Hole with Nginx because both use port 80

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 04:38 AM PDT

Soo many people use both Pi-Hole and Nginx and I still somehow can not find a solution no matter how many videos I watch or things I try. Nginx, I believe, requires port 80 to work properly and Pi-Hole uses port 80 for the web UI. Changing the ports in Portainer to something else no longer let me access the Pi-Hole UI and my internet stopped working. As of now it is working and I can even log into Nginx but I got rid of the port 80 which everyone says is required. How do I set up Pi-Hole to function and be accessible while Nginx is running on port 80? Someone said something about a "local host" port but it made no sense to me. I am new to servers and all of this stuff in general but I successfully got my Pi-Hole ad blocking my house through a Linode VPS in a docker container running through Portainer so I'm excited just can't get past this point.
