A Laptop for an engineering student

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 02:39 PM PDT

    Hi,

I'm an engineering student and I'll need a suggestion to buy a new laptop. Regarding the specs, I'm looking for a 13 or 14 inch (preferably 14) lightweight laptop which has sufficient I/Os : USB-A, USB-C and HDMI. Though, HDMI is not a must. Also, I'm looking for 16Gb+ RAM and 512Gb+ SSD.

Finally, I was wondering if a convertible (2 in 1) laptop was worth it for note-taking. Or should I have a tablet separately instead for that purpose ?

    PS : Budget : 1500 $

    Thanks

I'm starting college in a couple of months and I'd like to know what would be a good laptop I could use. More preferably something from Microsoft, but any other suggestions are fine as well. Thank you :)

Choosing Between Three Very Different Machines to Replace a 2014 Machine[<USD $2000, preferably ~$1500]

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 05:53 PM PDT

    All,

Form is at the bottom of this post. I'm struggling to decide between three very different machines, and I'm hoping to get any blindspots I may have covered before making a choice.

    I'm considering:

    • 2022 Asus Zephyrus G14
    • 2022 M2 Macbook Air
    • 2022 i7-1260p Framework

I'm replacing an 2014 Asus laptop with a 4th gen i7 and a GTX 720M. It still works well enough, but the battery life is completely shot and replacing the battery did not help meaningfully. Last year I attempted to replace it with an iPad Pro, keyboard, and mouse, but iPadOS is just not ready for laptop replacement and doesn't look like it will be for at least another year.

Background: I'm an attorney and, as a second job, I coach high schoolers in debate and forensics. The primary use of this laptop will be for tournaments where I'm often asked to judge, and flowing rounds on a laptop is much easier than on paper. However, as anyone who has been in a US high school debate round knows, power isn't always readily available so my existing laptop isn't reliable and the iPad isn't quite sufficient. So I need something with good battery life. Tournaments can also involve a lot of sitting so I like to do some light gaming. This isn't a primary machine, so it doesn't need to be excellent, but the dedicated GPU in the G14 is enticing.

I'm also looking for longevity. The Framework, being built for right to repair, seems best positioned for longevity, but I'm concerned about build quality. Apple devices, when cared for, seem to have great legs, but once the OS gets too bloated, there is nothing you can do. So the G14 seems like a happy medium: somewhat repairable, and from a brand I know I've been able to keep alive a long time.

I'm leaning towards the G14, but I want to hear other opinions and see if I've got any blindspots here where I could be looking for something that is a better fit for my mixed needs.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $2000 USD, preferably ~1500 USD.

Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery Life is important, but I want performance that will have legs in the form of still being competent for about 4 years (while impossible to know, I like to stretch my machines as long as I can take them).

How important is weight and thinness to you?

A nice to have, but not that important. I'm coming from a heavy chonker.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14-15 in.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light gaming, mostly indie titles like Rimworld, retro style games like Dusk and Ion Fury, and occassionally grand strategy like EU4 or Stellaris.

Light creative work: Gimp, Kdenlive editing. For fun, and I've got a desktop for heavier workloads.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'd like to be able to play games at or near native resolution at 60 FPS with medium settings. For most games I play that should be fine, but older AAA games and grand strategy games I'm used to turning down settings and resolution.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality is a must.

Dell XPS 13 Plus, MacBook Air M2, or something else? (USA/<$1600)

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 05:46 PM PDT

    First, the LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase:

I'm buying in the USA, and my approximate budget is $1600 or less.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

I would prefer not, unless there's some once-in-a-lifetime deal on them.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

If I had to rank these four, I would probably say form factor (ultrabook) > performance > build quality > battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Quite important. I'm going to be carrying it around most of the day in a small backpack so I definitely don't want a huge 17" or anything like that.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13-14".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I don't expect to be doing any of these except for some very light gaming. Which ones are indicated below.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I do most of my gaming on an Xbox Series X, so I really only use my laptop to play stuff like Hyper Light Drifter, Deadbolt, or Among Us every once in a while. Nothing crazy.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Weirdly enough, I would prefer no touchscreen. About 90% of the time, I feel they're a bit of a gimmick that don't do much except add to the price. That being said, I wouldn't be opposed to having a touchscreen if I felt the cost was worth it.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Some details about my use case - I'm looking to replace a six-year-old Dell XPS 13 with 8GB of RAM that just barely got me through my MA thesis. When I was in the process of writing it, Word crashed on me quite a few times (although cloud storage saved me, so it wasn't the worst). Naturally, I've wanted to replace it ever since.I don't need anything too powerful, since I won't be doing any video editing or stuff like that. I'm about to start a Ph.D. program in philosophy in the fall so 90% of my work will just be Word files, with the occasional PowerPoint or something along those lines.

I've already done some research and identified the Dell XPS 13 Plus (with the i5-1240p) and MacBook Air M2 as good candidates - both with 512GB of storage and 16GB of RAM. The 13 Plus, though, I'm not so sure about. Dell has made some really weird design decisions that I'm not sure I would enjoy, like the lack of a headphone jack and the weird flat keyboard. The MacBook seems a bit more enticing to me at the moment, but it would be my very first time owning a MacOS computer (despite owning an iPhone since like 2010).

So, specifically, I'm wanting to get opinions on whether the approximately $250-300 price difference between the XPS 13 Plus and MacBook Air M2 would be worth it, and to also get some other recommendations. A friend suggested the ASUS Zenbook 13, which I've just started looking into. Thanks, everyone.

Trying to decide between two laptops for work

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 04:49 PM PDT

I started a new job recently and as I am in charge of IT I have been allowed to choose what laptop to get. We are mostly standardized on lenovo but a few people have Dell laptops as well so I can pick either.

I have to purchase from one of the following sites which complicates things a bit:

    cdw

    Neweggbusiness.com

    dell business

Budget is around 2k USD or less so I have narrowed it down to the following two laptops -

    1) Dell XPS 13 Plus -

    i7 1280P

    16 GB, LPDDR5, 5200 MHz

    512GB M.2 PCIe Gen 4 NVMe

    13.4", 3.5K 3456x2160, 60Hz, OLED, Touch Display

    ----

    2) Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 3

    i7 1280p

    32 GB LPDDR5 4800MHz

    1TB nvme drive

    1920x1200 300nit display

    ----

I am also open to anything else you all can find on the sites memtioned above. Its a giant pain as everything is out of stock. The XPS 13 Plus seems much better but its out of stock until around JUly 4th but I don't mind waiting too much

The thinkpad is in stock currently but im not sure how the thermals are or if its a decent laptop. If I can upgrade the screen later like you can with previous models of the X13 then I may do that as well.

Best 2 in 1 laptop for a student going to college for Mechanical Engineering?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 03:47 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    <$900

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

No because I need it to work for the next years

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Needs to be a 2 in 1 because I don't wanna buy a tablet to take notes. Build quality, performance, and battery life do matter but I'm willing to sacrifice on one of those three.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

A 2 in 1 is probably light in weight

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

It most importantly needs to be a me to run programs like CAD. Probably won't be doing a lot of editing or gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Not a huge PC gamer

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A back-light keyboard looks like a cool feature to have. A good keyboard is probably a must of fast typing

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Haven't been able to find a 2 in 1 with a good processor and ram for the range I mentioned. If you guys have any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

General use and school laptop with decent webcam $500-700 USD

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 03:13 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $500-700 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance is my highest priority. It would just be used and carried from room to room in my house. So if battery life or durability is sub par in comparison to performance, that's okay.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Lowest priority.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13 inch or more.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Maybe some light time killer gaming like Door Kickers 2, FTL, etc.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

No. Gaming is not a high priority.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good webcam as I do some work over Zoom. I have multiple tabs open for school so want to prioritize performance over other things.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Looking for a decent computer that can last me for the next three years while I finish my bachelors and masters degree. Thank you!

HP 15.6" Touchscreen Laptop with Windows Home in S Mode Intel Pentium Processor 8GB RAM 256GB SSD Storage

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 03:09 PM PDT

Found this one for about $350 on target. Seemed to be cheap for one with an 8GB RAM. Does anyone know what the quality of this laptop is?

My primary use will be everyday surfing the internet, and checking email.

    [UK] £1000 Work/Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 02:40 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Ideally £1000 but can push to £1200 if £1000 is prohibitive for good performance.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, with warranty (unsure of what the standard sort of offering is for these?)

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Form factor, I just want a normal laptop. Battery life not prioritised too highly. Build quality 2nd most important

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not at all.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15in minimum 😏

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No CAD/editing. Will be used heavily for web development/programming and occasionally gaming (looking to start playing iracing I'm not sure how heavy that is)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Ah, yeah - iRacing. Not too fussed about the settings, can run on medium for all I care but good FPS would be good.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

None spring to mind? Would like hinges that don't die.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Thank you 🙂
