Accidently ran chmod -R -w ~/. and now I can't log in. Posted: 01 May 2022 03:33 AM PDT I meant to run chmod -R -w ~/. pointed to a specific folder, but accidently ran it across my entire system. I then tried recovery mode and it says filesystem state: read -only. Checking all file systems is supposed to remount my filesystem in read/write mode but it aborts it saying it cant find the file or dictionary. Going back to the login screen and enter my password just results in the login screen restarting. Anybody know what I should do? I'm using Linux Mint. EDIT: For anyone else with this problem, the solution is to login in using ctrl-alt-f1, and then enter chmod -R +w ~/. Restart and it should work! [link] [comments] |

Help with Ubuntu!!! (bootable USB) Posted: 01 May 2022 12:41 PM PDT Hello guys, So I recently installed Ubuntu on my hp (x spectre360) laptop by making my usb into a bootable device. I realized my laptop boots into Ubuntu even without the Usb plugged in and I'm worried all the files and stuff I'm making in Ubuntu Linux is going to be stored on my hard drive. (I didn't install elementary os or anything). Please let me know if this is a problem and how to fix it if anyone knows! Thank you. [link] [comments] |
AMD, ARM, Intel x86 and 64-bit Posted: 01 May 2022 03:57 PM PDT I don't get the difference between them. Is AMD CPU architecture? If yes how the new Macs has ARM M1 CPU and it's Unix based? And what's the difference between x86 and 32Bit and 64Bit? I'm literally noob in Hardware especially CPUs architectures. Can I have simple answers on what different between them? [link] [comments] |
I have problems with the grub. Posted: 01 May 2022 03:13 PM PDT A few days ago I installed Fedora 35 on my laptop, until now everything was going well. The problem I have is that when I access the grub I do not see the option to start with windows (the primary OS), only Fedora and when I am in Fedora if I see the windows partitions. This is the first time this has happened to me. [link] [comments] |
Is it safe to remove snapd on a new Ubuntu install? Posted: 01 May 2022 09:04 AM PDT I would like to remove snapd from my computer. Is it safe to remove snapd or is there a system component on Ubuntu that needs snapd? [link] [comments] |
network pcie card not detected Posted: 01 May 2022 02:44 PM PDT so, i recently purchased a tp-link ac1200 from amazon for some wireless purposes, but i'm currently having issues getting it to function properly. the issue is, i'm able to use the bluetooth (completely fine actually) while the wifi seems to not even be detected. i've reseated the pci card to make sure not just the power pins were connected or something like that. i've downloaded and installed multiple drivers for the card and after that, i have no indication anything has changed, i've tried using "sudo lshw -C network" and the only thing that comes up is the either net ports for my motherboard. does anyone have any ideas what i can do here forward? Trouble with Brother Printer on specific distributions Posted: 01 May 2022 10:43 AM PDT I have a relatively old Brother MFCJ485DW All-in-one printer connected to my home network via Wifi. Linux Mint has been the primary distro of choice for me for several years now. Without installing any additional Brother Drivers, Linux Mint (and a number of other distributions manjaro, ubuntu, fedora) will identify the printer on the local network and basic printing works well. I use the driver install tool on the official site in order to get the other features, like ink levels and scanning, to work quite reliably. https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadtop.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfcj485dw_us_as The problem comes when I try to to accomplish the same thing on distros like Arch, Endeavour, and OpenSUSE. On any of those distros, the printer does not get recognized. On debian, messing around with CUPS works. I am not looking for a step by step resolution. But what I am looking for is what do the more "beginner friendly" distributions have installed or configured by default that I am overlooking in setting up my own system with a more advanced distro? fyi many of these distros are virtualized in this these situations. Steam Overlay is not working on Minecraft using PolyMC Posted: 01 May 2022 01:45 PM PDT I decided to try out PolyMC since the official minecraft launcher from AUR does not memorize the login data and is having problems. The launcher itself (also taken from AUR), is much better with its mod download and better settings. However after adding it onto steam, the steam overlay just doesn't want to work inside of the game. On steam it shows up as me playing minecraft but I can't make use of the steam overlay. I am on manjaro and I am using packages from AUR. [link] [comments] |

what do the "prime-xyz" commands do? Posted: 01 May 2022 01:40 PM PDT Im using ubuntu 21.10 and when I go to autocomplete the command "prime-" I get four options: but I can't find an answer as to what these commands actually do [link] [comments] |
Vkbasalt causes weird graphical artifacts on gta 4 Posted: 01 May 2022 01:27 PM PDT Before anyone tells me to use goverlay, goverlay is what I am using. Mango hud works correctly but the game becomes just some blue lines artifacts when vkbasalt is enabled with the effects smaa and fxaa. It is only way I have found to enforce some sort of antialiasing to gta 4 (a game which doesn't give you the possiblity to add additional AA and is full of aliasing by default). On windows, this is easily fixable by enforcing driver AA through the nvidia control panel. None of that is present on linux, except for this experimental unsupported software for which no actual useful information can be found on the entire internet. [link] [comments] |
Mangohud and Gsync are not working together Posted: 01 May 2022 01:24 PM PDT Mangohud is needed to cap the fps under the refresh rate and to enable vsync. This is the process that is done on windows everytime and it's needed to actually make use of it. However, the gsync display indicator keeps showing "normal" when mangohud is active. And only shows "gsync" when mangohud is disabled. Are these 2 compatible or not? If they are not, then how is one supposed to have gsync actually up and running? Am I supposed to just have a placebo here and ignore the fact that it isn't actually working? I can't find any answer on the entire internet regarding anything related to this topic, expect from my own threads made before. [link] [comments] |
Change default installation path? Posted: 01 May 2022 12:11 PM PDT Hi, so basically, i've been going in and out of linux for a long time, and im currently working my way in again :V, i have a 240gb ssd and a 1tb hdd, since i currently can't get another drive my plan is to split up both drives, having both a similar disk setup, and disk space, so basically it will be (120gb ssd + 500gb hdd for linux, and another 120gb ssd + 500gb hdd for windows), but since Linux install's most program's in a different way, there's no Windows Installer where i can choose where to install it, most of my programs will go to the 120GB SSD, which is bad because of low space, and i want to know, if there's a way to have all the programs on the HDD or atleast, be able to choose what programs to be there, without having to install the whole Distro on the HDD... If this is a bit confusing, let me know that i will try to help. Btw, i'm planning on using probably Linux Mint with GNOME, or PopOs, or maybe some newer, better looking, ubuntu-based distro My PC Specs in case they are useful for something, idk :v i5-7600 16gb ram gpu amd rx580 8gb from powercolor with gigabyte fans DIY into it Seasonic 500w power supply msi h270 gaming m3 motherboard [link] [comments] |
.desktop file runs but opens under a different icon instead of the pinned (favorited) one Posted: 01 May 2022 11:38 AM PDT So I made a .desktop file so I can pin a WINE application to my taskbar. Cool and good, except it doesn't open under the pinned icon, instead making a new one for each time I open it. Virtualization Windows 11 - Missing Internent connection Posted: 01 May 2022 10:21 AM PDT I am attempting to virtualize windows under linux, but I am having some trouble. Distro : Garuda LinuxI have managed to bypass TPM and Secure boot with registry, and sucessfully install windows 11. Since even after adding TPM hardwared emulation, windows was complaining about the requirements, and I cant seem to change anything on the overview tab on the VM. Problem 1: I have no internet connection.I have setup my NIC: as Virtual network default NAT, device model e1000e. I aslo tried to use virtio instead of e1000e, but both scenarios give me no connection. When I installed windows, I instaded amd64 drives from the virt-io.iso that I downloaded from fedora, do I actually need to install anything else from there? I I am using QXL as my video display. I bumped the VRAM to 32MB on configuration, to see if I could get 4K display somewhat (a nice to have,). Do I need to do anything else, should I use virtio driver instead? AFAIK virtio with OPENGL is not possible on Guest Windows system, is there an alternative? Another thing I have noticed, is that sometimes windows throws a "System Threaded Exception" randomly and restarts, but it only happens randomly and then continues happily. Is there a guide to follow on how to handle something like this on a step by step? Nice to have: I am currently Dual booting Windows/Linux,Is it possible to actually load my "bare metal" windows installation in QEMU? and still be able to dual boot into it if I so desired? This is just a nice to have , but I am curious if something like this would be possible? The reason for the dual boot is that I currenly only have one GPU available so I cant passthrough a GPU from linux to windows. And some of the software actually requires the GPU to be present, but most of the time I wont need it. [link] [comments] |
