Laptop for programming, Python, $600 budget Posted: 03 May 2022 10:27 AM PDT Hi! I'm based in the USA, and I'm a very fresh and new beginner to programming and I'm currently in the process of learning Python. I have a custom built PC already, but I'm looking into getting a laptop so I can take my studies away from home where there are less distractions. Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: USA, $600 USD Are you open to refurbs/used? New only please How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? If foldable to use longways, that would be excellent. 200GB SSD i5 Intel CPU How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important at all Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. At least 15 inches Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Just programming with Python using VS Code and Replit If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Anything with USB slots would be ideal Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. EDIT: Im so sorry everybody, I'm making this post from my phone in work and failed to properly read the form rules [link] [comments] |
What is the oldest Mac you would consider coding on? Posted: 03 May 2022 11:57 AM PDT From what I can tell, nothing I do takes a ton of resources and was considering switching to Mac from Linux since I'm tired of spending 25% of my time making the most basic QOL things work. There are some decent 2010-2012 Macbook Pros for under $150 locally and I was considering picking one up but not sure if the older OS would have some kind of compatibility issues withVSCode or JS/Ruby or anything else, so I defer to those with far more brains and experience than I. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
M1 MacBook Air or Surface laptop 4 Posted: 03 May 2022 11:28 AM PDT I am an accountant student and will need a laptop for on campus, travel, etc. as I have a desktop pc at home. I will need to run Microsoft excel though I'm not too sure how heavily, and other accounting software. I can get the surface laptop 4 with the Ryzen 5 and 16gb ram for $900 or wait for the m1 MacBook Air to drop back to around $830 with the 8gb ram. Which would be a better option? I care about performance, longevity, battery life, and software comparability. Thanks! Any other suggestions id like a 13-14in laptop with 16gb ram if on windows [link] [comments] |

Which laptop here looks like the best laptop? Best answers only £700 Posted: 03 May 2022 01:30 PM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE**
£400-700
Nope!
Ideally looks nice as will be used for work, not bothered about two in one and want something that looks good and performs well for work. Some light photoshop and lasts a while.
Fairly but not be all end all
14 inches or more ideally
Photoshop and ideally some league of legends and runescape.
Not the focus
-would like a decent screen if possible!

macbook pro 2015 mid 15' in 2022 Posted: 03 May 2022 12:46 PM PDT Hi, i want to try macbook, my budget is 500-1000, but i am leaning more on the lower end, because i just want to try it and see if its good, and then i could upgrade to m1, and i am not "power user". I would be doing things like emails, watching youtube videos, educating myself through ebooks, doing research on stuff (meaning it could take up to 30 tabs open sometimes :D) , zoom meetings, even some kind of basic programming and very occasional simple video editing). I would use it in the school for like 2 hours a day, and when i am at home, i would put my mechanical keyboard, mouse and my monitor and use it "like pc". (if that's possible) Do you think macbook pro 2015 mid 15' would be good fit for my needs? (I can find it around 500usd in my country, m1 air around 900) Ty [link] [comments] |
Suggest me a laptop for university Posted: 03 May 2022 08:55 AM PDT Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Canada. $1 - 1.2k. Warranty should come standard Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes. Refurbs and open box but not used How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I've lived with mediocre laptops most of my life so smooth performance is something I haven't really experienced in full. However, I do want to do casual video editing (Filmora), document editing and gaming (full settings or HD is not a priority). This means that it can multitask with, say, with a video editor and a few browser tabs open. For build quality, I want it to last until after undergrad and postgrad is finished which would be about 6-7 years if everything goes smoothly. I would be doing an online degree for most of it so not a lot of travelling but battery life - about 6 hours - would be preferable for the times I work around the house or in the dog days of summer How important is weight and thinness to you? Quite important I do want a laptop that is light, preferably 1 - 1 ½ kg. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Less than 14 inches Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Video editing: Filmora X, NCH Videopad Video games If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Valorant, COD BO2, World of Tanks, games available on GOG such as Blood, Wolfenstien, and Quake and GZ/LZDoom with mods like Brutal Doom. Also, heavier emulation with emulators such as Dolphin (Wii + GameCube) should run smoothly but not at max settings These should run at 60 FPS or higher. As stated above, max settings such as motion blur and anti-aliasing are not a must, but gameplay should not be choppy during times of high action. Also I've heard that these sorts of ultra portable laptops overheat quite a bit; is there any way to minimize it? Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable built in keyboard that can keep up with 70-80 WPM and constant pressing of WASD keys. Laptop should preferably have an SSD with 512GB of storage or higher. [link] [comments] |

All rounder for Uni/career, with a little bit of gaming potential Posted: 03 May 2022 12:33 PM PDT I'm exploring options for my new laptop, and as a heavy gamer most of my life I've only ever had gaming laptops. Now that I've scaled back the gaming, I'd like to have a laptop that's easily portable, with a battery that won't die within an hour. So I'm looking for someone to recommend a sturdy work laptop that has a good battery life. I don't need it to be super slim or light, as long as it's obviously different to the heavy bricks that gaming laptops can be. In terms of gaming potential, I'd like it to be able to run games such as minecraft or terraria smoothly, with the absolute heaviest game being something like Valorant, but I'd understand if that's asking for too much and isn't really a priority. No budget, thanks! [link] [comments] |
Need help choosing between these two laptops... Posted: 03 May 2022 12:13 PM PDT What I am asking for is which laptop of the two listed below has the best price to hardware ratio. Music Production & Gaming Laptop Posted: 03 May 2022 10:22 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
$1500
Yes
Performance is key, not looking for a 2-in-1.
Not at all important
15in
For music production I use Cubase Artist 11 and sometimes Ableton. I'd like to maybe experiment with Reaper in the future. I don't use a lot of plugins and mainly record direct from a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20. I'd like to be able to play some newer games but the graphics don't need to blow me out of the water. It would also be useful to be able to run some basic stats with SAS or R.
Elder Scrolls Online, Age of Empires II HD, Witcher III, RDR2. Medium to low settings on the latter two are fine.
The more ports, the better.
