My budget is 1250 euro, i am in ireland so laptops are very expensive, twice as expensive as what you see in the US for the exact same model. I used to have the acer predator helios 300, but after awhile the hinges fell apart for no reason and the plastic vents underneath started coming off in huge clumps. Really really cheap plastic, much better off just sitting on some desk somewhere with the screen always open. But, i don't plan on using a desk and would much rather use it on my lap. I was wondering, does anybody have this model of laptop, with the 144hz screen and all that, and how is it going for you? This laptop gets a lot of hate even though it has very good specs.

[US, <$650USD] Law Student/Intern looking for a laptop.

    Posted: 30 May 2022 02:22 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I am looking to spend <$650, Ideally in the $400-$500 range.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, if pointed where I can find a reliable refurbished laptop.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, Battery Life, and lastly build quality.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not very, if at all.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I wouldn't mind being able to use Fusion360 (CAD), or Cura (CAD/3D-Print Slicer), but not a necessity as it would be nice to work on 3d print projects in my downtime. Not too important to me as I have a personal desktop dedicated for this.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Backlit keyboard would be great, Ideally will have an SSD and over 8gb ram.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I am currently a student, and I just accepted an offer for a clerkship with a local attorney in my area. I will be using this laptop mainly for work purposes at the law firm, and I plan to keep my personal laptop separate from my work laptop as there will be confidential information involved working at an attorneys office. The last thing I need is for my laptop to somehow end up in discovery and the court being shown my meme collection. If allowed, during any downtime, it would be nice to work on schoolwork on this laptop as well. So I am looking for a laptop that can handle working in the legal field, being a student, and student-budget friendly. I am completely against chromebooks.

    i7-1255u vs 5700u

    Posted: 30 May 2022 02:00 PM PDT

Which of these two processors - the i7-1255u or the Ryzen 5700u - is a better choice in general and especially for taking notes in college and programming (nothing too CPU-intensive, at least for now, but a little more power wouldn't hurt anyone)?

P.S. The laptops I have in question have similar price points, so that wouldn't be much of a deciding factor.

    Looking for lightweight/thin laptop (US)

    Posted: 30 May 2022 01:30 PM PDT

Howdy! I'm trying to help my partner look for a laptop since their old one is shitting out on them. Their budget is around $1200-$1400. They're looking for decent battery life, good performance, and enough storage to hold their work/school files. They also want a laptop that will be able to run a heavily modded Sims 4 and modded Minecraft since those are really the only two games they play. They don't really like the bulkiness or style of gaming laptops, so they're looking for something that they can be able to take to class and look like it's a work computer. Any suggestions would be really appreciated since I'm not too well versed in computers :)

Cyber day is going in my country and i need a portable computer since im leaving my house for a few months for university.
This is the link to the sales: https://www.paris.cl/tecnologia/computadores/notebooks/

Originally i was thinking the Hp Victus 16 but i heard the screen is not good and a gaming laptop is not really a priority. Then the ASUS Zenbook 13 looked promising but it's only 8 Gb RAM not upgradeable. Any recommendations?

    15-inch 16:10 laptop for writing/web browsing (Canada, 1000-2000$CAD)

    Posted: 30 May 2022 01:15 PM PDT

    Let's try this again

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    1000-2000 $CAD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    form factor->performance/battery life-> build quality

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'm going to use this laptop to work while traveling but I don't need a superthin or lightweight laptop. Prefer 2kg or less.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Yes, 15.6 inch, 16:10 aspect ratio.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No, nothing crazy. Mostly writing on Goole Docs + two Firefox windows with many tabs. I don't need 2:1 or anything fancy, just a basic, modern all-arounder laptop.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I might play games like Dota 2 or RPGs like Witcher 3. But not very much so it doesn't really matter.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard would be nice because I'm mostly going to be using the laptop to write. Also prefer a laptop that won't have QC issues and break within a year (cough XPS 15 cough).

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This laptop is for freelance writing work while traveling. I already made a post here but realized that I would really like a 15.6 inch, 16:10 laptop. That extra space is so nice for writing/productivity. I recently bought a 14 inch laptop but returned it because it felt too small. 16 inch is too big so I want to stick with 15.

From my research the only real option is the XPS 15 9500/9510/9520. But I've read so many posts about the QC issues that I don't want to bother with it, especially since I'm traveling soon. I also checked out the Microsoft surface 3/4 but wasn't satisfied with people's reviews of it.

Laptop for gaming, 3D modelling, and hospital use - US/Canada, max budget $1500-$1800ish USD

    Posted: 30 May 2022 12:26 PM PDT

    The Form

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1500 USD maximum budget, purchasing in the US (or in Canada)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Honestly, not sure. For reference, my current laptop is a Lenovo Y70 Touch from 2014, and it's just way too heavy for my current level of travel. For form factor, I don't need something that's Ultrabook levels of thin and light, but I would definitely prefer this to fit in an oversized backpack and be <5lbs, as my current laptop is 7.5lbs. Not sure what build quality refers to. For performance, I'd need something that can reasonably do complex 3D modelling on, as well as play indie games with maybe the occasional AAA game (but I don't need max graphics etc). Battery life isn't super important as I almost always have some kind of electrical outlet nearby, but it'd be nice to get at least 2hrs continuous use for low-demand gaming.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Weight is fairly important. Current laptop is 7.5lbs and I constantly travel - the past 8 years of lugging this around has been annoying. Laptop doesn't need to be thin.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Absolutely must be at least 17". Anything less drives me nuts.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
CAD - modelling gemstones with pretty lifelike rendering, surprisingly high demand on hardware; and working with high-res CT scans and MRI, including generating 3D models from them. Gaming - some indie games, a smaller number of AAA-level first person platformers/parkour/non-shooters.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Typically more of indie games that don't have any significant graphics requirements. Rarely, will play stuff like Portal 2, Deadcore, the occasional cartoony MMO (nothing like FF14). Ideally would run at 1080p 60fps, but I'm fine turning graphics settings down a bit.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
100% definitely need a keyboard with a separate number pad. Would prefer a laptop that will reasonably last the next 4 years. Do not need and do not want a touchcreen or fingerprint reader. Don't need an optical drive as I've got an external drive. 100% also need USB ports, HDMI port, etc. I have a solid wireless mouse so I don't need a touchpad. Would also prefer that there's a reasonably good laptop camera. The ability to wire into a router and get much faster internet would also be fairly useful especially for VPN'ing into hospital network and pulling up CT scans and MRIs.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'll most likely be using this laptop for the 2022-2023 academic year as a temporary desktop replacement - am moving from Canada to the US for a year and don't want to bring my whole setup. Will be using a laptop dock and would greatly appreciate recommendations for a laptop dock or some kind of peripheral that can charge my laptop, connect to an external monitor, connect to other peripherals, etc. Laptop will be taken into and out of hospitals repeatedly, so it would be nice to have something that I can clean with hospital-grade sterilizing agents (but that's not something necessary!).

    $400-$450 laptop help please

    Posted: 30 May 2022 12:24 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $400 to $450

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Rather get brand new if possible

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, battery life, cooling, build quality, form factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important at all, won't really be moving around the laptop much

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Starting to learn web development, programming and coding but none game related. Would only run emulators up to ps2 at most if I game at all.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

If possible would like to run FF14 mmo at 30 fps but if not then no problem, that would just be a extra bonus.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Amazing cooling and battery if possible

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Due to unforeseen circumstances I'm in need of a laptop, one preferably $400. $450 at most. I need it mainly for browsing, web development, and programming/coding. The coding and programming isn't game related so don't need a GPU. The only games I would be playing is old games using an emulator, the most demanding would be ps2 games I'm guessing. If possible I would like the laptop to have amazing cooling and battery because it would be on most of the day and the room is already humid enough as is, so the less heat the better. Had past history with mold and don't want to deal with that ever again :/..... Thank you for any and all help

Looking for a $1000 (4300PLN) Laptop, preferably 14 inch, Poland

    Posted: 30 May 2022 12:23 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • 4300PLN, Poland

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • Refurbs, yes, if there's a certainty that the quality is good
    • Used, no

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • I need a fairly portable laptop (not the priority, though) with good build quality (nothing special needed as long as it's reliable and doesn't feel very cheap) and fast general performance. Battery life at least 3.5-4hrs. Priorities: Performance, build quality

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • It's fine as long as it's not extremely bulky looking

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • I'm looking for 14 inch, but I'm open to 15inch suggestions in case there's no good 14inch option

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Little to no gaming or video/photo editing
    • Software includes JetBrains programs, Arduino IDE, 3D printing slicers (PrusaSlicer, which is not particularly demanding), Microsoft Excel, Word, Access,

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Gaming related aspects are not important to me

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • I need a good, comfortable keyboard and at least a decent touchpad.
    • Touchscreen and fingerprint is unimportant, I dont really need an SD slot.
    • Reliable build quality is important (I don't want it to look or feel low quality).
    • The display is somewhat important (Good brightness and color accuracy would be nice, 19:10 aspect ratio could be useful) as well as some decent speakers (as in, not super quiet and flat sounding)

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • If possible, I would like to have 16GB of RAM, but if there's no 16GB option, a fast 8GB is fine
    • CPU doesn't matter that much as long as it's not slower than my current i5-1035G1
    • I don't really need more than 256GB of storage
    • The programs I listed are not very demanding, but I'd like everything to run smoothly

In case there's something important I missed, please tell me, I'm new to this community and to Reddit
