What cpu should I pair with a 3070 Ti?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 07:01 PM PDT

I decided to go with a 3070 Ti instead of a standard 3070. Should I still go with my original planned 12700k?

5900x hitting 93.3c while gaming on 240 mm AIO. The cooler is too small for 30c room temperature or did I do something wrong?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 09:03 PM PDT

Update: Someone (not on Reddit) mentioned that room ventilation might be a source problem. Try to gaming when placing a PC in the middle of the room. This turns out CPU temperature drops significantly from 93c to 73c while gaming (world of warships). However, I would like to thank /r/buildapc that helping me figure out the problem.

I recently upgrade from 3900x to 5900x and notice that while I gaming (namely world of warships) on stock CPU configuration temperature hit 93.3c on CCD1 while Tctl is 1.1c always from thermal throttling.

    https://i.imgur.com/1uVjxTh.png

I try to re-apply thermal paste 2 times and check for the sticker in case I forgot it. but it still reaches above 90c.

A quick google search shows that almost everyone said 240mm is enough for 5900x but one thing to consider is I live in a tropical area where room temperature never falls below 30c.

Is 240mm AIO is not enough because of the high room temperature? Or did I do something wrong?

Why do we have to cool PC components (discussion only)

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 06:37 PM PDT

I'm asking this on a theoretical level, bec I know the practical answer is that we have to cool PC components because otherwise the bios will shut it down.

Okay, but why does that happen though, I mean what disaster is it trying to prevent?

Is it a safety issue because of the risk of catching fire?

Or a warranty issue, because running too hot will destroy the components?

Or a practical one, because the processing speed decreases at higher temps because the electrons can't move around properly or whatever?

For that matter, if you somehow disabled the temperature regulation what would happen? Would you destroy your PC (or burn your house down)? Or just suffer really slow speeds?

Getting a 12600k with a MSI B660M-A Pro WiFi DDR4, is this a good choice?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 06:21 AM PDT

Is this a good motherboard for the processor I have chosen? I don't plan on using overclocking because you don't really gain much from it these days. I have a 3080 FE, 32gb of ddr4 3600 ram. I Have a Peerless Assassin SE cooler with the 1700 bracket.

The motherboard seems too good to be true. Will the 12600k run optimally with this board?

(If I get them at microcenter, the 12600k is 249.99, and the motherboard is 129.99)

My i5 2500 died and I feel very outdated

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 01:26 AM PDT

So my second gen i5 died yesterday after 10+ years of hard work and I am in my way of bulding a new rig. I've been building pcs since 2005 and I've never had to update the BIOS of any motherboard so far, I keep reading here and there that I need to update the BIOS if I want to use a Ryzen 5 5600x.

I don't recall people updating their newly bought MOBOs, a few years back if I wanted a new Intel CPU I had to check the chipset that supports it and find a MOBO with the same chipset, shouldn't I do the same for AMD?

Am I missing something? now I am sorry of not being up to date on the latest hardware news, I am more of a software guy.

I use my pc mostly for browsing, coding, hoarding data and ocassional gaming.

    PC pre-built evaluation and opinion

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 06:09 AM PDT

A little the reasoning behind the need for a new PC. My old laptop of 7 years or so gave up working, so since I don't really need the mobility of a laptop nowadays I think is a good time to have a solid PC. The main use for it will be gaming and occasional rendering of 3D assets and side projects from web development. Here are the specs:

    • Case: Lian Li Lancool 215 ARGB Tempered Glass USB 30 Black
    • Power supply: Asus TUF Gaming 650B 80 Plus Bronze 650W
    • Processor: Intel Core i5-12600K 4.9 GHz Cooler: Forgeon Solarian Cooler 4Pipes Black ARGB CPU Fan 120mm / Noctua NH-U12S
    • Motherboard: Asus TUF GAMING Z690-PLUS D4
    • Disk: Seagate FireCuda 520 SSD 1TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 3D TLC NVMe
    • RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200MHz (2x8GB) CL16
    • Graphics Card: Asus TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, 8GB GDDR6
    • Dimensions: 251 x 545 x 552 mm (WxDxH)

    Asking price 1725,43€

I would also upgrade the current build with 16GB DDR4 3200MHz (2x8GB) and a wifi PCie adapter since I can't have a ethernet cord for my office atm.

    Thanks for reading :)

    I bought a 1440p monitor and I'm disappointed

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 05:56 AM PDT

    I had a 24.5" 1080p IPS monitor and I upgraded to a 27" 1440p IPS one.

My friends were always telling me that I would see a world of a difference, but I just can't.

I can only sense a lower frame rate ( even if I have a RTX 3070 Ti), a bigger screen (obviously) and a little more polished image. That's all.

I kinda think it's not worth it. Am I blind or what?

    Does anyone have any Ideas?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 03:15 AM PDT

Let me start by saying I know very little about computers so sorry if I say something stupid. Over the past year, I have had the same issue with my computer. At random times, my pc will freeze, then loose connection from my monitor, keyboard and mouse. After a second or two of it loosing connection, it starts to rev up like a car. Fans still spin, lights are still on. I have to hold the power button for a couple seconds and then turn it back on to fix it. Sometimes it happens four times in a day with less than 10 minutes in-between each freeze. Other times it does not do it for a week or two. I have been told it is almost every part in my computer. I have replaced ( for different reasons) My motherboard, psu, cpu cooler, RAM, hard drive, and I tried a different gpu but it did nothing so I went back to my old one. I posted something five days ago and got a little bit of help, but I think I either deleted it by accident or it was taken down. I updated my bios a few days ago, and I just finished running memtest86 on my ram. My ram is fine. I have also reinstalled windows, run multiple smart scans, all of my things are up to date, including windows. I am wondering if it could be my cpu. When I built it, I was using the cooler that came in the box. I started having issues and one of the first things I did was buy a new cooler because my temps were high. I am wondering if my cpu was damaged due to overheating in the beginning. It has no bent pins or any physical damage. I dont know if this could happen or if that would cause these issues, but its all I can think of now. Does anyone have any Ideas as to what this could be?

    -Specs.

    Ryzen 5 2600

    Asrock rx 580

    MSI B450 Tomahawk max ll

    Corsair Vengeance LPX (2x 8gb)

    Corsair CX750M 80+ bronze

My cpu cooler is the Artic Freezer 34 eSports Duo

I have a 2tb seagate Hard drive and a small ssd for windows.

How many intake and exhaust fans should I have?

I have a Corsair 4000d case and a Nzxt x73 for front mount.

Should I get three 120mm fans for exhaust or one 120mm and two 140mm fans for exhaust?

    Blu-ray rewrite drive without tray

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 04:03 AM PDT

I can't seem to find a normal sized blu-ray rewrite drive that doesn't have a tray. I just want to be able to slide the disk in. The only ones I can find that have that type of operation are super thin and don't fill the space in a normal case's OD slot. Any solutions? I figure, worst case scenario, I'd have to 3D print a bezel to fill the space.

    need advice for ssd cloning

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 10:00 PM PDT

I just bought a new M.2 (my first one) and I would like to not have to reinstall everything. I did a bit of research and noticed there's something called ghosting/cloning where you basically copy the files over. Is this a good idea or should I do a fresh install?

Also not sure what software to use if cloning is fine.

Putting together a new build - is there anything better around this price point?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 03:45 AM PDT

So I'm looking to upgrade my current desktop from my trusty i5-7600k, GTX 1070, 16gb DDR3.

The build I have planned out so far can be found here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/sCjy4s

I was planning on splitting up the order into 2 parts:

    Corsair:

    Best Buy:

Total for all items would be $2,813.94 after taxes and shipping.

I use my desktop for a combination of WFH, PC Gaming, Streaming, etc...

I have a 3 monitor setup (DELL S2716DGR ), which I'll most likely be replacing at some point in the near future as well due to issues with backlight bleed and burn in at the bottom of 2 screens on the task bars.

Thanks in advance for any advice or feedback!

Best way to add USB-C to my PC (Meshify C case)?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 01:15 AM PDT

I have a Meshify C case with only USB-A front panel ports. My mobo is a ASRock B560 Pro4. I want to be able to plug in USB-C things. Is there a better option than PCIE expansion cards?

5950x peak 85C with Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360 AIO + temps/clock speeds normal?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 03:27 AM PDT

Hi, just wanted to get some feedback on my setup.

    It's 5950x with Strix 3090 OC.

I'm on PBO on auto, with Optimized Curve -10.

Are my clockspeeds, temperature and power draw of both the CPU and GPU good?

    https://i.imgur.com/wOfOqfT.png

I have the AIO running at 50% at 75C and ramps up to 100% at 85C for the fan curve.

Hope to get some insight whether these are good numbers or if I could improve things.

Help upgrading i5-9600k and GTX 1080

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 03:07 AM PDT

This PC is used almost exclusively for gaming/streaming with some light photoshop stuff.

I've been having frame issues in games like Elden Ring and Halo Infinite's campaign and want to upgrade but not sure where to start.

Working with a i5-9600k with a MPG Z390 Gaming plus motherboard, 32gb of ddr4 (I had extra) and a GTX 1080 with 8gb of VRAM.

When playing games like Elden Ring task manager tells me my CPU is between 70-90% usage, sometimes spiking to 95 whereas my GPU is at 20%, and I'm getting 40~ FPS on medium settings in the open areas. I'm not sure how accurate task manager is for this though, so I'm willing to try other tests if anyone has ideas.

This would lead me to believe I need to upgrade my CPU, but I'm not sure what I should go for. It seems if I want a good CPU, i may need to upgrade my motherboard. I'm willing to do so, but not sure if this is what I need to do. I'm willing to spend around ~500 if CPU is the bottleneck.

If/when I upgrade my GPU, I want a 3080. Have heard so much good about it, and the price is dropping. Someone earlier told me it will continue dropping as a new series it out soon, but with how the economy is right now it feels sketchy to wait and see. If it spiked back up to 1600 again I'd be mad to miss it. Willing to spend more to upgrade here as it's a GPU

What do you guys think? Where is the smartest place to upgrade this build?

Edit: Here's my results from a Shadows of the Tomb Raider benchmark

Edit 2: Was told to turn on xms in bios which made a pretty significant improvement, here's the new benchmark.

Why does my CPU score so low on benchmark tests compared to 'statistically' worse CPUs? (why is it considered so bad?)

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 07:30 PM PDT

A heads up before you read. Im not good with hardware AT ALL, so i have no clue as to why it would be considered so bad and if i should replace it asap.

My current computer has an Intel Core i7-8700k @ 3.70GHz, and anytime i ask a friend for advice about my pc, or benchmark tests, i'm always told that my CPU absolutely bottlenecks my 1080ti. However everytime i do tests or comparisons, it seems like my CPU just scores low. It's considered to be worse than an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 in a test. My friend says it's because of coffee lake and being from 2017 but idk. My Motherboard is a ROG STRIX Z370-E for what it's worth. If this isn't the subreddit to be asking, i'll happily delete the post and post it elsewhere. Thanks!

Newly Assembled PC Concerns Regarding CPU Temperature

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 12:39 AM PDT

TLDR; My CPU temperature skyrocketed to between 75-90C when playing TW:W3 (Not even playing, just at the main menu). I think I have appropriate cooling and ventilation, but I'm not sure if it's me or just a poorly optimised game. Celsius S24 AIO plug into CPU_FAN or AIO header? Do I need more fans? Or am I just overreacting for a badly optimised game that needs a patch? Best way to test PC cooling ability?

    Specs:

    • CPU: i9-12900k 3.20 GHz
    • GPU: GeFore RTX 3080 Ti
    • AIO Cooling: Fractal Designs Celsius S24 (top mounted)
    • Mobo: Asus prime z690-p d4
    • Chassis Fans: 3 intake (2 Corsair ML140s and 1 stock case fan), 3 exhaust (2 of these fans are part of the AIO)

So after roughly 12 years of service, my previous PC finally died and I had to begin the process of building a new one. Given how often I use my PC, I decided to splurge and go for the bleeding edge (ridiculously expensive) components.

Assembly of the machine took awhile, but I managed to get it to boot and install/run Windows 10 with no problems. I ran 3DMark (Time Spy, Time Spy Stress, and CPU Profile) and got decent scores with decent temperatures throughout the entire testing process (Highest GPU was around 78 and CPU was roughly the same during CPU Profile). Idle, my temps for GPU are``````` approx 50C and my CPU is 31C.

Thinking everything was good, I fired up Total War: Warhammer 3 and noticed my CPU temperature jump to around 80C up to 90C in the main menu. This raised many red flags so I did a bit of research and some more tests. I downloaded and ran Cinebench where my CPU was around 80-90C on the first couple of passes but then was at 100C for the remaining passes. Researching online, I have read that TW:W3 is poorly optimised, especially for Alder Lake and high temperatures are pretty common. Some of the comments suggested that even 80-90C is way to high for a AIO cooled CPU even if the game has issues with 12th gen CPUs and that I have improperly configured my cooling/ventilation.

I have attached the S24 AIO to the CPU_FAN header, the fans are plugged into the radiator and the pump has only one cable. Based on what I read online, it was recommended to plug this into the CPU_FAN header and not the AIO_PUMP. Is this correct, or should I plug it into the AIO__PUMP? Do you folks reckon I've got adequate cooling and that this is purely on the developers end, or is this something I need to investigate further? If so, what do you reckon is the best way to test for cooling as well as improve on it?

Apologies for the wall of text and general overreacting. This is the first PC I've ever built so I'm waiting for the penny to drop and my entire rig to just collapse on itself.
