Wired Mesh Backhaul vs AP - Q&A for New Home + Tips Posted: 01 Apr 2022 03:42 AM PDT Hey guys, Close to the finishing of building a new home w granny flat. I'm 17 and I'll be doing most of the TECH side of things (networking, smart home, HA etc.) for our new home consisting of me, brothers and parents. I'd like to ensure that most of the technical stuff will also be easy for my parents when I move out in 5-10yrs or so IDK. I've spent the couple of months in research and needed some help from the community. Firstly, Yes - I have ensured that there is ethernet in every room and all the basic stuff. I'm planning on running a home server, possibly on Proxmox, running Home Assistant for our smart home, Jellyfin for our media and movies, and alot more stuff along the lines. We already have Reolink cameras for security which will be possible integrated into Home Assistant. Question being... should I get a WiFi Mesh System or Access Point? Here in Australia, our internet is pretty trash so we'll most likely only opting for the 50mb or 100mb plan. I was thinking of going the TP-Link Omada route but I'm not sure now after reading some of the posts here. If I'm going the Omada route: TL-ER605 (Router) - $84 2x EAP615-Wall (AP) - $238 TOTAL = $322 Mesh route: TP-Link Deco M5 (3 pack) - $265 TOTAL = $265 Either way, both will be wired with Ethernet and connected to the Modem from ISP. But I'm not sure which one to go with as I've read that its better to get the mesh for ease of use and it would be better than AP since its wired, but that seems wrong to me. Is the extra cost for the Omada system worth justifying the price? TLDR; Should I go for a cheaper mesh or AP system where both will be wired anyway, is the extra small cost for the AP justifiable for use of VLANs, extra setting etc. This post is kinda long and wordy, but it would be appreciated if I could get some advice. Thanks for your help. I'm only a teen but I'm really interested in the tech space and am keen on this kinda stuff hence. Truly! [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Apr 2022 03:51 AM PDT Hello, I live in China, 3 story house and the internet is a mess. Main issues: - speed tests give me extremely good speeds but in reality websites connect extremely slow and take forever to respond or load anything at all. Even if I'm the only one using the network (VPN or not) - Way too many networks - NAS is only fast on the access point it's plugged into. About: - In total there are 8 separate networks across 3 floors. Ideally this would be reduced to 2. - I'd like to have one normal network and one VPN network. How can I chain together or tell routers to act as bridge or extenders? - Note: VPN is using a proprietary firmware called Merlin & Vortex & Koolshare (380.70 0X7.9.1) - The modem connects to each floor through cat 5e and from there to each Non-VPN router and then from there into each VPN router on their respective floors. Below are the different modems and routers on different floors along with the speed I'm getting from ookla (optimal server, measured standing next to the router) Floor 1: Modem: out of date tp-link (needs replacement), supposedly gigabit and China telecom is saying there is a 400Mbps line coming in. Router: Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 2.4GHz: - Ping: 5Ms - Down: 77.3Mbps - Up: 27.1Mbps 5GHz: - Ping: 6Ms - Down: 332Mbps - Up: 33.1Mbps VPN Router: Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 assuming it's on smart mode: - Ping: 15Ms - Down: 48.1Mbps - Up: 32.2Mbps Floor 2: Router: Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 2.4GHz: - Ping: 5Ms - Down: 86.2Mbps - Up: 31.4Mbps 5GHz: - Ping: 6Ms - Down: 325.8Mbps - Up: 32.3Mbps VPN Router: Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 assuming it's on smart mode: - Ping: 32Ms - Down: 45.2Mbps - Up: 28.5Mbps Floor 3: (only has normal internet) Router: Netgear Nighthawk AX6 AX6000 2.4GHz: - Ping: 4Ms - Down: 100.3Mbps - Up: 74.5Mbps 5GHz: - Ping: 5Ms - Down: 358.0Mbps - Up: 45.2Mbps

AT&T Fiber 5000, what router do you use Posted: 01 Apr 2022 07:08 AM PDT I am moving to a new home and have AT&T 5000 being installed. I want to use my own router so I can control everything, and was wondering what router do you all use. I would like a router that has 10g wan and a 10g lan to go into my Cisco POE switch's 10g sfp to minimize bottlenecks Anyone know of such a router? [link] [comments]
Provider doesn't sell dedicated ip and refuses to give me router password Posted: 01 Apr 2022 04:46 AM PDT A month ago I installed internet through a WiFi bridge, there's antenna on the roof, rj-45 cable goes to the router and I use wifi and cable connection to use internet. [link] [comments]

Posted: 01 Apr 2022 08:47 AM PDT Long story short, i have a fiber connection and i'm stuck with ISP's router Wifi+Ethernet combo due it's proprietary IPTV system. I'm not having bufferbloat on WAN but on Wifi, wifi is clearly a bottleneck here. I plan to run cables through the house and connect most devices to ethernet, but some devices will remain at wifi. Does routers manage wifi and ethernet packet buffers differently ? I mean if someone on wifi causing packets to be buffer on router does ethernet have some sort of priority due to be a different link ? thanks [link] [comments]
Seamless connection of 2+ routers in one house. Posted: 01 Apr 2022 01:17 AM PDT I have multiple routers that I would like to use to extend wifi network in my house. My current setup is simple: Router_1 receives 4G data from mobile service provider and transmits wifi_1 into (192.168.8.*) This works fine you just have to chose wifi_1 or wifi_2 baset on whichever is strongest. What I don't like is that sometimes devices connected to different networks have trouble communicating. Like PC is in wifi_1 while wifi printer is in wifi_2 or joining LAN games in some cases. Question, is there a way to connect both printers seamlessly, preferably under same wifi name AND same network? [link] [comments]

What's the best way to wire or re-wire the house in this case? Posted: 01 Apr 2022 06:58 AM PDT This is the current situation in a beautiful MS Paint sketch: Explanation: Rooms 1 and 3 are wired to Cat 5e, going out from the router. The router itself is connected to a phone line coming from the conduit, however, it's permanently stuck there because they added this point later and just extended the last part without a conduit, and it's just coming out of the concrete - there is no way to actually pull a new wire from this point (talking about point 3 in red) I want to replace the wires to Cat6 to prepare for optic fiber internet, and also wire room number 2. Rooms 2 and 3 share a wall. What would be the best way to re-wire the house to cat6 and also wire room 2? The router doesn't have to be in the same spot it is now I just feel like the conduits are too empty and could be used somehow to both run the wires better and hide them as well. Or I should just drill a hole from room 3 to room 2, add a switch and done. Edit: added to the sketch the distance from the network box to the rooms (10 meters from each room to the box) [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Apr 2022 06:51 AM PDT Looking to pick up a basic switch for the house and came across the Netgear GS205v2 and the GS605v5. I like that the switches and power are all on the back. Can anyone advise what the differences are? Is there a reason to select one or the other? Thanks! [link] [comments]

Posted: 01 Apr 2022 02:29 AM PDT I recently had a faulty wire in my house that caused my internet service to go completely out. Since the service was patched through older telephone wires when the ISP's technican was first setting up the internet, it was recommended to me to go with completely new wiring ie. utp cable. The technician left two wires sticking out from ISP's box on the side of my house and I'm interested what do I need to go from there directly into the modem's dsl port? [link] [comments]
Looking for a convenient and free file transferring service Posted: 01 Apr 2022 02:01 AM PDT I'm a freelance 3D designer. Customers usually send me their drawings by e-mail. After work is completed, I send 3D models to them. This way of transferring works only if the files comply with size limits. Even if my Gmail account allows for 25 Mb per e-mail, people I work with often use Hotmail.com, which has a limit of 10 Mb. This is the main reason to look for other ways for file transferring, as file size often exceeds limits. The main criterion for me is the convenience of file sharing. I recently started using a quick file upload service called Fastupload that ensures an easy file transferring process. I upload the file onto their server (the size limit per file is 2 GB), and after the upload is finished, the system generates a link. This link allows downloading the file immediately on any device, and there's no need to download any software on my computer. The cherry on the cake here is that people I send files to don't have to download anything other than the file itself. It's not required to sign up for this service. My customers are all around the globe. I've noticed that in some countries, people have little knowledge of file-sharing platforms, and they are suspicious when told they must download software or subscribe to the services. The service I'm using is convenient and requires no specific knowledge about file transfer. It's been a month since I started using it, and so far, it's been smooth sailing. I'm only worried that services like this will become paid in the future. Not being a tech guy, I might have missed out on some crucial points, so I'd like to ask about the disadvantages of such free, no-obligations- and no-limits services compared to file sharing giants like DropBox? Many thanks to those who've read this far and are willing to share some tips. [link] [comments]
Moving FTTB DSL Modem but only 1 live ethernet port Posted: 01 Apr 2022 12:44 AM PDT Hi HN, I've just moved into a rented apartment in Sydney and thought I'd hit the jackpot when I saw all the ethernet keystones in each room...unfortunately I've come to realise things aren't so rosy. Internet connection is handled through a FTTB node in the basement, the ISP engineer came yesterday and connected the DSL modem to the ethernet port in the front room and I have full reception. I want to move the modem to the office, and the engineer advised it should just be as easy as moving the modem as all the ethernet ports in this unit are wired in series, not to a switch... I've tried moving the modem but there is no DSL pickup from any other port I've tried. I've contacted the building manager and he's told me (anecdotally) that I should contact a private contractor who can move the DSL signal, as not all are live by default. I've taken a load of pictures and will upload, for background:
Interestingly, it looks like the ports are wired in series, as shown in the pictures, where a grey and orange pair bridge the white-blue and solid-blue pairs from the Cat 5e cable. Cat 5e is the cable being run to the ethernet ports, all of these are terminated in full (all 8 cables), but not all are being used for transmission when the DSL cable is plugged in. Happy to provide any more info, I imagine I'm being thick. EDIT: Pics are here [link] [comments]
Is there any advantage to keeping second router in router mode rather than access point mode? Posted: 31 Mar 2022 06:42 PM PDT I have my ISP router hooked to a Netgear R6700v2 — Nighthawk AC1750 that I use exclusively for my PC and Quest 2 only. All of my home devices run off of the 2.4Ghz side of my ISP router and then I use the Netgear to stream PCVR to my Quest virtual reality headset on the 5Ghz side. Only the Quest and PC use 5Ghz and the Netgear. The Netgear is currently set up as an access point. Its on a uncrowded channel but I'm still getting screen stuttering on my Quest. The router is within feet of my play area, nice line of sight. I recall reading somewhere that keeping the router set as a router and then manually setting it up as an access point has some advantages over using the AP setting during set up. I'm a noob so any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. I've spent days trying to get this working smoothly. [link] [comments]
need help with my xbox connection Posted: 01 Apr 2022 12:28 AM PDT So I'm trying to get my connection back to what it was we just got a replacement router from the isp and I'm trying to fix my connection because i have low mbps and my latency fluctuates. I think i fixed this before by port forwarding but my family isp charges for static ips so i think i did it with dhcp settings and it worked but if anyone knows how to fix this problem I can't run a Ethernet cable cuz the distance is pretty far so if anyone has any solutions that'd be great i use the arris nvg468mq from frontier on ipv4 and it has 2ghz and 5ghz. Low cost setup for home networking/ DMZ Posted: 01 Apr 2022 12:03 AM PDT Hi All, I am looking for some suggestion to build DMZ to host my website and nextcloud, VPN Server. Does pfsense DMZ function as effective as having 2 routers. I want to keep the energy consumption as low as possible. Therefore, it make sense the less hardware that much saving but definitely not on the expense of security. So, please suggest for ideal setup for DMZ with low cost hardwares. I already have 2 routers and 1 old 2 Gb lying around at home. [link] [comments]
Best wifi system for a 2700 sq ft house with 4-10 people? Posted: 31 Mar 2022 05:02 PM PDT House is 2 stories with each floor being 1360 sq ft. I heard a "mesh system" would be best. Any specific recommendations for a mesh system or router? Mostly used for video streaming, internet browsing, and some gaming. Also, need a modem edit: Might be worth noting the house is in a rural location and the ISP is Endeavor (Fiber) [link] [comments]
Is this normal? Netgear XS508M Posted: 31 Mar 2022 10:56 PM PDT HI all, I'm not really a networking specialist so just after some advice before potentially looking to RMA the device. I have the above switch that conntects some mac minis, a mbp with a 10gbe Tb port and a 10gbe NAS and a connection to my router. When its works, everything works fine. But it locks up occasionally, and is a bugger to get going again. If I just pull the power and plug back in all the green lights on every port light up (indicating a 10GBE connection) regardless of what (if anything) is plugged in. I thought maybe this was a boot up thing, but no, 30 min later its still all green lights all the time, and the devices report no connection (not self assigned IP.. no connection) The only semi reliable way to get the thing back on line is to unplug all of the connections, wait for the port lights to go off, then start to plug things back in. I've had routers before but this is my first switch. You don't have to unplug and re-plug everything whenever you do a power cycle, surely? [link] [comments]
New Router - Can Connect to Google Play Store Posted: 31 Mar 2022 09:49 PM PDT I'm not sure if this is related to the problem or not, but I'm not sure what else it could be at this point. I updated my wireless router recently. I have two old android phones (Android 8.1 and 9) that can't seem to connect to the Google play store. So they can't update or download apps. Watching YouTube videos or playing games seems fine. I was having issues setting up one of the phones after a factory reset because of this as well. I took it to work and used the wifi there and everything worked fine. I set up the phone and downloaded apps perfectly fine I have connected it to a hot spot with my phone and that worked too. We have two newer phones that have no problems. I'm not sure if this is related to my wifi router or not, but I'm not sure where else to look. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?
