Something finally comes CLOSE to a OneNote alternative on Linux Posted: 01 Feb 2022 02:46 PM PST Oh baby....the time has finally come. Rnote is a hella' nice drawing/annotating tool. The formatting is brilliant, better than OneNotes' infinity canvas, and is something that is actually conducive for lecture style note-taking (Think things like collanote, notability etc); Rnote pastes material on a page, so you can draw over/on the side/ next to it. This is in opposition to the (fantastic, but not for me) Xournal++, that forces a pdf as the background. I've only ever seen The Linux Experiment talk about this one & my mans' was right--this application is straight fire. Now...there are a few things missing: pdf export & audio tools to name two, but guess what homies, it can export as an .xopp, Xournal++'s file format. This means if you use them in tandem, you can pretty much get rid of OneNote, finally. A GPL licensed product that is great, love to see it. [link] [comments] |
Make GRUB default to Windows and/or disable grub bootloader (FROM WINDOWS) Posted: 01 Feb 2022 10:20 PM PST I downloaded ubuntu a couple of times to set it up on a flashdrive, and both times (despite me selecting put bootloader on device), grub was installed on my harddrive. Now I want to turn it off without deleting ubuntu from my system partition or just make it default to windows so I dont have to type exit to exit out of grub. What do I do to achieve this? (Note, I am doing this from windows, so saying edit etc/default/grub is not useful at all.) I have access to the system partition and grub.cfg if that helps. [link] [comments] |

Tried updating python and nuked my system Posted: 01 Feb 2022 09:34 AM PST I tried updating python using this tutorial and when I restarted my PC I'm greeted with a login screen but my mouse and keyboard won't work. Here's the stuck screen. I have no idea how I managed this, but I did it on my work and home computers. The work PC I just wiped and did a fresh install since I didn't have anything too important on it. My home PC on the other hand, I've been getting things just how I like them for years and I REALLY don't want to start from scratch.
Grub is working fine and I can boot into recovery mode (though none of the options seemed to fix my problem). I also have access to a Kubuntu live USB [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Feb 2022 12:22 AM PST I just purchased a Dell Precision 3561 with Ubuntu 20.04.2 installed (no Windows at all). WiFi networks show but cannot connect. Dell support could not help. The error is "Connection failed. Activation of network connection failed." I'm a very average/new user that was just trying to break away from Windows and feel a little over my head so please go easy on me. I've searched the internet but there are so many solutions I'm not sure where to begin. It's possible I'm missing something very obvious but have tried some easy fixes (off and on again, restarting, changing time/date). Any help is appreciated. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2022 04:59 PM PST Hi there, I am new to this sub and new to linux. I came across a YouTube video of Network Chuck where he explained that everything in linux is a file so I started experimenting with the "which" command it tells u where is your command file stored. But when I entered which cd nothing happens. Does this means that cd is not a file? Are they other commands like this? [link] [comments] |
Wanting to extend my ubuntu partition Posted: 01 Feb 2022 09:38 PM PST TL;DR
Alright so I've messed around with ubuntu for a while and after discovering some of my games are available on ubuntu I'd like to extend my partition from a test size of 30 gb to 100ish gb. So far my only partitions are the stock windows partitions (efi, recovery, and all of windows' junk) and then my ubuntu partition. I'm not worried about keeping any data within my test partition of ubuntu also as it doesn't have anything crucial. My questions are:
I just don't wanna brick my laptop lol. Edit: It's a 500gb SSD [link] [comments] |
Trying to copy OS onto SD card via Etcher Posted: 02 Feb 2022 01:11 AM PST I have a Ubuntu laptop. I'm using Etcher and trying to copy Ubuntu Touch onto my SD card. I'm getting a message saying "Flashed failed". "EIO: I/o error, write" I am running Ubuntu under administrator. How can I get around this problem? Happens when I try to copy other OS' onto SD card [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to copy files from an ssh machine to my local machine? Posted: 02 Feb 2022 12:27 AM PST SSH-ing using a windows machine, into a Ubuntu Linux box. So I'm using ssh to access a linux box on my university campus. I'm executing code which outputs files and Ideally I'd like to copy those files from the remotely accessed PC into say the Documents folder of my local machine. I've tried using sftp but it won't copy to my laptop and keeps defaulting to the home directory of the linux box. Is what I want possible? [link] [comments] |
grub-probe hangs with root partition Posted: 01 Feb 2022 11:47 PM PST Artix(runit) user here and after an update I'm having trouble with my system, when I turn off my pc it hangs in umounting filesystems, and after checking fstab I tried to reinstall grub(efi) but when I try to install it it just does nothing and I cannot do ctrl+c and I have to close my terminal emulator, while the grub install its running I opened htop and see that a process grub-probe -d <root partition> is making it hang, and when I run it separately It does the same as when I try to install grub I have been Investigating about this but nobody had this problem in any formun [link] [comments] |

No 'Install alongside windows option' displaying when trying to dual-boot Posted: 01 Feb 2022 12:51 PM PST I am trying to dual-boot and install Ubuntu 20.4.3 from flash drive using Rufus. The first time I tried, I could see the option to install alongside windows. However, I had to quit out to uninstall BitLocker. When I tried again, the option to install alongside windows is no longer showing. Found another post suggesting switching off 'fast boot', which did not work for me. Total noob. Running Windows 11. Partition scheme GPT, Target System UEFI. What do I need to do to get the option back? [link] [comments] |
How do I change the color of a character highlighted by the cursor in the Terminal? Posted: 01 Feb 2022 10:30 PM PST I am currently using urxvt, and wherever I place my cursor, the color of the chosen character turns into a dark black, which does NOT look visible at all with my dark Terminal background. How can I change it to something like white? [link] [comments] |
Black screen when I try to boot into Fedora after installation Posted: 01 Feb 2022 10:50 AM PST OS: Windows 10, Fedora 35 Workstation Hardware:
0 Experience with linux but really wanted to try it. After suggestion from distrochooser and some YouTube videos decided to pick fedora and dualboot it with windows on two separate drives. Downloaded the .iso and Rufus, created bootable drive, booted from it, clicked trough the installer, picked a drive, etc. After it installed i pressed finish and was prompted to reboot, which i did. After rebooting i was greeted with this screen (it has two fedoras for some reason, is it normal?). Choosing either leads to a black screen. No cursor or anything, just black, and no way to exit, only by turning PC off. When i pick windows i get this: Disabling fedora in BIOS soot order (or just prioritising windows boot manager) leads to booting into windows just as usual. Where did I fuck up and how do i fix it?
