    Simple Questions - January 28, 2022

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 09:00 PM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Why has tempered glass become the standard for case windows?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 06:21 PM PST

It's just mind-boggling to me. The upsides seem so miniscule in comparison to the downsides of fragility and added weight. Acrylic just makes so much more sense as a material.

Related question: What high quality cases with windows are available right now which uses acrylic for their windows?

    EDIT:

So the main benefits based on the discussion in this thread seem to be:

    • Scratch-resistance. This is unequivocally the most mentioned aspect. I've had multiple acrylic side panels and never had issues with them being noticeably scratched, but that's obviously anecdotal.

    • Noise reduction. Wasn't aware of this; Definitely something to consider if you're choosing between the two.

    • Aesthetic. This is obviously subjective but it seems like the consensus is simply that tempered glass looks better.

Will a 2060 do well for 1080p gaming going into 2022?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 04:52 PM PST

Hey guys is there a monitor that does both 1440p 144hz and 4K 60hz

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 12:06 PM PST

I want the option of playing on both setting without moving monitors. I can't find anything online but I know a family member of mine had a monitor he says is 1080p 144hz but it also can do 4K not sure the hz.

Is it okay to call storage as "memory" and to not refer to it as RAM?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 01:08 PM PST

I'm being told that "memory" is what storage is called and RAM is not called memory. I already know that that's not really the case, but because it's on a Roblox game that is becoming increasingly popular to an audience that is not familiar with PCs (thousands of players on it with over 10 million total visits) I suggested to the developers to change the "memory" category in the game to "storage", since it contains hard drives and solid state drives vs. RAM which contains memory modules, but they double down on their refusal to do so and state "bruv your wrong" for the above reason. Am I wrong?

Should I consider a used GTX 1080 Ti?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 11:33 AM PST

Please bear with me, I'm stupid when it comes to anything related to gaming hardware

My brother offers me his used GTX 1080 Ti for 300€ - 400€ (360$ - 480$). Now, I'm a very casual gamer. Heck, my current GPU is an R9 380 from way back and it's starting to show.

I don't care about the newer gen technologies like Raytracing and the like, but sometimes I run parallel processing tasks via CUDA on my GPU, for which I'd probably appreciate the extra horse power. I'm a bit concerned though about how long there'll be support and updates as I probably won't upgrade for the next few years if I take this card.

    I have a 1440p 144Hz monitor and a secondary 1080p one, if that helps.

    Is this a good deal?

    1440p or 1080p

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 11:18 PM PST

I have a few doubts and questions about the whole 1440, 1080p for gaming. Mainly I wanna know if it's worth it to run 1440p, you know get the monitor especially that let's you run it, but play games not at max quality but rather at medium, trying to get a decent fps. OR. Get 1080p but play with higher graphics. Let's say fps remains same in both cases, the only thing changes is monitor and gpu of course. I say medium graphics for 1440p, because the gpu wouldn't be something like 3080ti.

So to summarize it 1440p medium setting or 1080p high setting

Will leaving my Pc in direct sunlight damage anything?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 07:44 PM PST

Will leaving my Pc in direct sunlight damage anything? I have a kinda crammed room and can't keep it anywhere else. It sits right next to the window and gets direct sunlight if I keep my curtains open. I'd assume there would be some type of long term damage. Any suggestions?

First build, No dedicated GPU, Mainly for programming

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 12:31 PM PST

    Hi guys,

This is my first time posting so sorry in advance for bad formatting and other mistakes.

    I need your help.
I'll be using this PC for some programming (full stack development work including running IDEs, writing unit tests, some software security testing etc.), day to day stuff, web surfing, YT, once in a while a game of LoL, etc.
Some programs I intend on using are Visual Studio, VS Code, WSL, Docker (CPU and RAM heavy).
I don't intend on playing AAA games or FPS, I will get a console for that.

I would like your comments/suggestions regarding this setup I listed bellow.
    My budget is around $900.

    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G 3.9 GHz 6-Core Processor

Long time lurker, first time builder- Can anybody help with a final check to make sure everything looks good? | 12600k + 3070ti

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 09:07 PM PST

Finally, after what feels like years, I was able to buy a graphics card through the EVGA queue in order to build my first PC. I ended up with the EVGA 3070ti FTW3.

Based on newer research after purchasing I have decided to build using the i5 12600k instead of the R5 5600x, which I had been planning to build with for the last 6 months or so. Is this generally a good choice for gaming and other mixed use (will be buying a 160hz 1440p monitor, mixed FPS and single player games)?

I plan to pair all that with an Asus mobo, likely a Tuf or Prime z690 and Corsair 2x16gb, 3600 Mhz, CL 16 RAM, with a Corsair H100i AIO cooler.

I am hoping I have caught all the big problems already:

    • I will need to order new standoffs from Corsair to install the AIO cooler on the z690 board.
    • Anything bigger than a H100i (i.e. H115i or H150i) and I will have to front mount my cooler due to interference between the cooler fans and the height of my ram.

Is there anything else I am missing here?

Is this build drastically imbalanced or bottlenecked in some way?

Any advice for the ordering/buying process and my eventual build?

    Thanks!

*Also, it is not lost on me that this is a commonly assembled combination, but I like Corsair, Asus and EVGA so it was natural to go this somewhat unoriginal route.

What is the most elegant way to cover up a case's side window?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2022 12:37 AM PST

It is becoming more difficult to find cases without a transparent side window, a feature that I personally find unattractive. I have found various cases that fulfill my build niche, but they all happen to have side windows.

Does anyone have any recommendations for covering up the side window? At the moment, I can only think of spraypainting the panel to match my case's color.

First time builder, wondering how long these specs will last me

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 06:15 PM PST

I'm a college student, I mostly use it for school work and light gaming (mostly LoL). Was wondering how long these parts will last me and if this was a good build or not. Spend around $8-900 composes of new and used parts.

First PC Build Specs and Advice

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 10:38 PM PST

I am building my first PC for both my design work and also gaming. Was always using a laptop but found its too slow now for renderings and running multiple design-based programs at once. I want to also play some games on the side.

These are the specs I'm thinking of:

    - AMD Ryzen 9 5900x

    - Gigabyte x570s Aorus Elite AX

    - Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3060ti Gaming OC R2.0

    - Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x16gb 3200mhz DDR4 (could need more later on)

    - Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1tb M.2 NVMe SSD

    - Corsair RM750 Power Supply

    - Noctua NH-D15S CPU Cooler

    - Corsair Airflow 4000D Case

The price for all of this is probably my max budget, can go a little bit over if people think it's worth it. Pretty sure all these components work together. Not looking to overclock unless highly recommended.

Any suggestions or feedback would be awesome.

Ryzen 7 5700g for handbrake encoding?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 11:12 PM PST

Can't find anything that directly answers my question online, but does handbrake make use of the integrated graphics on an amd cpu like this one. Or would I be better off buying a cpu without integrated graphics.

The build will only be used for video encoding and doubling up as a plex media server, absolutely no gaming or anything else on it

Rx 6600 graphics driver issues help

    Posted: 28 Jan 2022 01:13 AM PST

Hi guys. I've just finished building my pc, but I'm running into an issue. When booting into windows, I get to a black no signal screen. I think I've narrowed it down to graphics driver issues, but can't say for sure. If I use Microsoft's "basic display adapter", I can boot fine and don't have black screen issues. If I install my Radeon graphics drivers, then I can't boot except to safe mode. I'm wondering what to do about this. Please help

    i3 12100f vs i5 10400f

    Posted: 28 Jan 2022 12:20 AM PST

I was considering to buy a new pc. I came across i3 12100f. At first it was the way to go because it defeated ryzen7/ i7 at single core, and as the pc was gaming focused which is a single threaded task there were no options other than 12100f at its price point. But then came some problems.

*The 12100f is better than i5 10400f in gaming, but it has more temperature on average and was being utilized 70 to 90 percent in all games. whereas i5 was cooler and was under 80% and averaged around 65% in all games exceptions being cyberpunk.

*At first glance its cheaper than i5 giving better performance. but considering high price of b660 motherboard its actually more costly than i5

*being a 12th gen chip it gets more hot and a good cooler is needed whereas i5 is good enough with stock. So cooler price also gets added. I am planning to use DEEPCOOL 400 V2.

    i am planning to go with a 3050 or a 6600.

    thanks for any advice.

    27 inch or 24 inch?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 07:03 PM PST

I currently have have a 27 inch 60 hz monitor (overclocked to 74). Ive been thinking of getting a budget 144hz 1080p monitor, but I'm not sure if I should cop a 24 inch or 27 inch.

Is 24 inch worth it? Apparently it's better for fps games but I'm not really sure. I'd like to know yall's opinions

Is ASUS Armoury Crate *THAT* bad??

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 08:09 PM PST

I've been considering putting together a build with a 12900k. I even secured some DDR5 RAM that is always sold out in the event I decide to pull the trigger on the build, returning the RAM if I don't move forward. A z690 mobo that really caught my eye and stood above all others to me was the ASUS Maximus Hero. However, as I started looking into the software, I notice that it includes a ton of junk that I have no interest in using. Game launcher for mobo software?? Monitoring pieces? Power profiles? Fan speeds (lul BIOS??)? I also see a TON of people saying that Armoury Crate, which is now required for RGB, kills gaming performance or causes other issues.

Initially, I thought that its a subset of vocal people. RGB Fusion also has a ton of posts about bad experiences, but I have built several PCs recently with Gigabyte boards, and RGB fusion works just fine, uses 0% CPU and 100MB of RAM tops. Worst I've experienced with RGB Fusion is needing to manually start it every month or so, because my RAM color was the default, but as soon as I started the app, the Ram RGB would work and I would just X out of it. I do use just static color, so I wonder if that has anything to do with it. However, RGB fusion does one thing and one thing only, polar opposite to Armoury Crate it seems. So I am mainly looking for user feedback on whether or not Armoury Crate is fine and that its a minority with issues, if anyone notices and FPS drops in games, etc.

tl;dr: Considering ASUS board, have seen TONS of posts telling of performance loss associated with Armoury Crate, which is required for RGB. Similar posts for RGB Fusion, but I have nothing but good experiences with the latter. Is Armoury Crate really that bad?

Edit: I am also curious about CPU and RAM usage. When the app is not focused with static colors, how much CPU does it use? If possible for y'all to see (Resource Monitor), how many processes does it take?

    SN750 gen 3 500gb vs SN750 SE gen 4 1tb as boot drive?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 09:18 PM PST

    Hey guys, I have a SN750 gen 3 500gb and a SN750 SE gen 4 1tb for my upcoming 12700k z690, 3060 ti build.
My question is, which one is better to use as a system/boot drive? Will the older gen 3 500gb one better because it has DRAM, or will the newer gen 4 1tb better because it has faster write/read speed on paper?

I am an illustrator and I mainly use my computer to paint with adobe photoshop, illustrator, clip studio paint, light video editing, streaming (rarely) and light gaming.

    Thank you in advance!
