Recommendation for Windows Laptop for College

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 02:50 PM PST

I currently have a MacBook Air, and although I love it, I'm running into a lot of issues due to heavy excel usage in my college classes. I've received a few recommendations to switch to a Windows based laptop. I don't know a whole lot about laptops, so any recommendations would be a huge help.

I'm looking to keep the price at $1000 or lower.

    Currently live in the U.S.

Mid to high range for college

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 05:41 PM PST

Hello all! I am currently in school to get a degeee in cyber security. I have a semi serviceable laptop now but am looking to upgrade sometime soon. I'm not sure if a netbook, laptop, Ultrabook or whatever would be my best bet but I'd like something small, portable and fast I can do my online classes on. Because I don't really have an idea what direction to go in I don't really have a budget yet

Good laptop with 3:2 aspect ?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 05:40 PM PST

I've been looking at Acer swift 3 and surface laptop. I've heard bad about the swifts keyboard but I wanted to see if anyone else has any suggestions for a laptop with this screen ratio. Surface is great but I'm not too crazy of paying an apple tax on a Windows computer

Surface Book 3 Vs New MacBook Pro

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 11:38 AM PST

Between the 13.5" Surface Book 3, i7/32GB RAM/512GB SSD and 2021 14" MacBook Pro, M1 pro/8 OR 10 core CPU/14 core GPU/16 core neural engine/16GB RAM/512 SSD, which one is the "better" laptop?

I currently have the Surface Book 3 and am having hardware issues with it. I purchased geek squad protection at Best Buy where they will give me a gift card for the amount paid if they can't fix it, and I'm hoping they can't since the laptop isn't worth $3,000 CAD for the problems I'm experiencing, IMO. I've always been a windows user but have gotten curious about macOS. What are some of the pros and cons about each laptop? I would be using it for basic things like MS Office suite, YouTube, Netflix, and surfing the web. I wouldn't be doing anything that requires higher specs than what I described above such as video editing and hard core gaming (heck, I don't even need 32GB or RAM but I wanted the 512 GB SSD, and i could only get it with 32GB of RAM). The main things I'm looking for are display quality (this is probably the biggest since I mainly use it for watching videos), battery life, and ability to handle many browser tabs at once. The touch screen feature on my surface book doesn't matter to me that much.

Specifically about the display, how does the MacBook's Liquid Retina XDR display, 3024 X 1964 native resolution, 254 PPI, 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, compare to the surface book's PixelSense Display, 3000x2000 resolution, 267 PPI, 1600:1 contrast ratio?

Any help is greatly appreciated, and let me know if I should fill out the questionnaire instead

USA, budget no more than $1,200

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 12:31 AM PST

Hi all, I am seeking help deciding on a good laptop for some light gaming as well as college work. Questionnaire below: LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      No more than $1,200

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I would like a 2-in-1 laptop with good battery.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Thinness is not that important. No more than 4.5 lbs, please.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      No more than 15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No video/photo editing. I frequently use Microsoft Office and do a lot of web browsing. I do some light gaming; I play Genshin Impact. To add, my little brother will be using my laptop from time to time to play Wizard101, so I'll add that info just in case.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'm hoping to get my hands on Hades. I won't be playing a lot of games. I don't know about FPS and all that (sorry) but I play Genshin on iPad and I see that FPS is set to 30. So around that is fine.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A fingerprint reader would be nice. I would also like USB 3.0 ports (my current laptop is a 2015 MacBook Air; the lack of ports is the main reason why I don't want to go for the new Mac). Also a webcam, because of college.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I don't know much about laptops, but I want to ask for your opinions on the HP Envy x360. https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp/hp-envy-x360-convertible-laptop-15z-eu000-touch-268j0av-1 I was thinking of a 16gb memory + 512gb storage. Is a 16gb memory enough for me? Is going down 8gb good enough? Thank you so much!

Laptop with the most colour-accurate and bright display for $1000-1200

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 08:39 AM PST

I need a laptop for 3D modelling, texturing, graphic design and maybe for occasional rendering and gaming, so decent cooling is a plus but not essential, since I have another laptop for those.

Colour accuracy and brightness is the deciding factor, but I'd also like it to have a real GPU and not some ultra-thin piece of tin with geforce mx or intel graphics etc.

I guess, I'm basically asking which laptop with 1650-60/3050/60 series GPU has the best display?

Gaming machine that will last a few years. ~$3000 USD, Eastern US

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 10:00 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Around $3000 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

I think so? Had a few bad experiences with HP refurbs and the hinges dying VERY fast. I think I could trust most of the folks on here if they suggest one though.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance > Build Quality > Battery Life > Form Factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not at all. I carry around multiple laptops on a regular basis in a backpack that easily weighs 50+ pounds.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Big fan of 17" screens. I love a true "full" keyboard that usually comes with the 17" screens, but isn't an absolute requirement.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming for sure. Bit of light CAD work. I'm an engineer so usually can stick to work machines for that, but it's nice to have some of my own available for simple 3D prints and the like.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Mostly RTS and MOBAs, I prefer high quality and high res over higher refresh rates. I'll generally be playing through a docking station (not the right word anymore, it's a USB C Lightning hub. Using two 27" 1080p monitors and a 75" 4k TV) Not too much of FPS type games for me. Too stuck in console controller world for me there.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I NEED a USB C Lightning port for use with the dockingstation/hub. Beyond that not much I "need". Backlit keyboard would be nice.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Currently I'm using a Dell G3 as my daily driver since my desktop died on me late 2019. It's done well enough for me, but it's starting to show it's age on newer titles. (tried Halo Infinite since finding a series X is basically impossible and it was NOT happy with it, same for BF 2042)

    Stats for my current machine:

    • Dell G3 3779
    • Screen size - 17"
    • CPU - i7 8750H @ 2.20 GHz
    • GPU - 2Gb GTX 1060 Max-Q
    • Ram - 32Gb
    • OS Drive - 2Tb WD SN550 NVMe
    • Storage - 4 Tb SG Barracuda

    Mid-to-High end laptop for DJing

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 01:34 PM PST

Howdy do r/suggestalaptop! With the new year here, the time to replace my rickety old Y700 (with 6700HQ and 960m) is very apparent. A fault in the hard drive sent my metadata into the void and the prospect of re-analysing all my tracks at an average of 600 per hour (with 100,000 songs to get through) is unappealing to say the least. However, I'd already intended on taking January off to increase the storage, so it works out!

There are very few definitive requirements for this PC. Budget is unlimited, however with COVID re-looming in Australia, under $3000AUD would be preferable due to the potential for being on a single job for the foreseeable future looming. As I have a 2TB m.2 and 2TB 2.5" SSD available, the initial storage is trivial. A laptop with additional m.2 slots or a Hard Drive bay in addition to the boot drive will immediately take budget preference, however I can get by with only a single m.2.

Size, weight, screen size and build quality are all trivial, as compared to what I have, anything is an improvement. TOUCHSCREEN IS IMPERATIVE. Power wise, it only has to top the older system's power. One of my DJ Pals has a 9th gen 6-core i7 processor in his laptop that blitzes my track-analysis potential, having analysed his (similarly sized) library in barely over a day. This laptop will be using Several high-demand programs at once, so it needs some kick to it.

Currently eyeballing the ASUS ROG Flow 13 with Ryzen 5900 and 3050 (2,399 AUD). Unfortunately seasonal depression has hit and my ability to research further than "touchscreen gaming laptop" is poor. I am willing to wait for 12th Gen Intel and next gen Ryzen to hit, whether that's for the power jump or price cuts on current-gen systems is fine by me.

Thank you for your time, and thank you in advance for your expertise.

How do I convince my parents to buy me a £600 laptop (Acer Swift 3)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 09:30 AM PST

I badly need a new laptop the one I'm currently using is a piece of shit it can barely handle more than 3 tabs and when it does the fan sounds like a freaking airport. The battery life is literally 30 minutes and it takes 5 minutes just to start up. My mum agreed but her budget is £200 I've done some googling and Youtube video-watching and I've concluded you can't buy shit with £200 (sorry if I'm wrong) but she doesn't understand. The laptop I'm currently using costs £200 and I've already stated its problems. Help me please I have exams coming really soon and I'm going to be sitting my GCSEs soon too but I can't revise with this laptop especially computer science I need to do my programming but this hunk of junk can't handle Unity properly.

Looking for a replacement for my pixelbook

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 06:48 AM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    USA. Budget of $1000

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life is generally important, at least 7 hours. More so than the rest.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Frequently used "on the go", so nothing too heavy.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13" - 15" would be idea.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No gaming, photo, etc. I do stream media.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I do a lot of typing, so a quality keyboard is useful. Also, I participate in a lot of Zoom calls, so a not-terrible camera is useful.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This is replacing my 2018 Pixelbook. I like a lot of things about it, but when the pandemic occurred I started working remotely and it hasn't been ideal (I remote connect to my office computer) for that.

    $800-$1000 (USD)

    * Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Maybe

    * How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Fairly thin and light, 2 in 1 would be nice. Battery life less important. Good fast performance on everyday internet surfing required, no gaming.

    * How important is weight and thinness to you?

Thin and light would be nice - laptop is for in-laws in their 60s. This machine does not have to be the thinnest ever in the world though.

    * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15" or close preferred

    * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    No gaming.

Laptop for gaming, audio recording, and some programming

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 06:19 AM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Between $1000 and $1300. I would like to keep it closer to $1000 if possible. Are you open to refurbs/used? No, I'm not. I would prefer a brand new laptop. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I wouldn't want it too big, I'm gonna be in college soon. So, I would want to be something that isn't too big or hefty. Makes it easier to carry around campus.

Build quality is important to me. I'm always careful with my laptop, but it's better to be safe than sorry. So, good build quality is a must.

Performance is also important to me since I'm gonna using this laptop for gaming (mostly Yakuza, Judgement, Hell Let Loose, Post Scriptum) and I want those games to run fluidly, audio recording (plan to do audiobooks), and some coding/programming for my chemistry degree. So, it's important to have a laptop that can handle all of that with little or no issues.

Long battery life isn't a total requirement because I tend to keep my laptop plugged for the most part, but might have it unplugged for classes. So, anything that lasts longer than 3 hours unplugged would be good.

How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't mind if the laptop is thick or thin as long as it's durable.

As for weight, I don't want it too heavy. I'm trans and started estrogen recently. My physical strength and muscles could start diminishing around 6 months in, so I don't want the laptop to be super heavy.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I would prefer a 15 or 16 inch display. It would keep the laptop a little more compact for me. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I plan to use the laptop for several things. Audio recording for one as I plan to record audiobooks in college for money. Some coding/programming as I have to do such classes for my chemistry degree in college, not sure what language I'll be using.

And gaming, I plan to run mostly the Yakuza/Judgment series, Hell Let Loose, Post Scriptum, and pretty much any multiplayer shooter.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I mostly want to play the Yakuza/Judgment which are open-world beat em ups and RPGs. I also want to play intense multiplayer shooters like Hell Let Loose, Post Scriptum, Red Orchestra 2, Rising Storm 2, and Insurgency. And maybe some older RPGs like the Elder Scrolls series and the Fallout series. I would LOVE for these to run at 60 FPS if possible. If not, I'll happily accept 50 FPS on High settings. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality is a must. I would also like for the laptop to have a good keyboard too. Maybe some good input devices as well, you never know. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. 2 things
    1. I need this laptop to last me for 4 years or so. Pretty much my whole time in university and beyond. I don't want it becoming obsolete too soon.

    2. I'm VERY hesitant to buy a Lenovo laptop again. I currently own a Legion 5 with a Ryzen 7 4800 and 1660i GTX which I bought off of Amazon because someone on this subreddit recommended it to me. Well, after 5 months of ownership, I had this happen to my display (see this post here) https://www.reddit.com/r/LenovoLegion/comments/pbipno/anyone_experience_this_issue_with_their_screen_it/.

They replaced the screen, but it wouldn't turn back on. Tech had to then replace the entire system board. That was over 5 months ago. And now that issue is back, but it's not as bad. It still makes me nervous for the laptop's future.

So, if you recommend Lenovo, please understand that you're gonna have to make a hard sell because I'm very hesitant to throw away that kind of money for another Lenovo Legion if it means that this happens again. So, keep that in mind.

      Not at all.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

      Not so important.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? If possible I'd prefer finger-print reader

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm still a college student and I'm trying to learn programming and also dive deeper into topics such as AI&ML, 3D modelling, game designing and so on.

    USA, ~2000 USD budget

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 01:32 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Purchasing in the United States. I've got a budget of around 2000 USD.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I was thinking of 2-in-1, but it isn't required. I will be using this laptop for school so I'd prefer a longer battery life and quick web browsing performance, as well as being able to run Microsoft apps.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Very! I prefer it to be lightweight, preferably lighter than 5 pounds.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13-15 inches.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I will want to use Clip Studio Paint, which does have some animating on it. If I can, I'd want to run FFXIV on it with medium graphics and 30 fps but it isn't required (I can use my old laptop for that).
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'd like the ability to write on the computer with a pen for notetaking. Touch screen sort of pairs with that. A couple of USB ports would help too - maybe 2? I want it to store my art files so it doesn't clog up my computer. I need a decent keyboard for art hotkeys and just typing a ton in general - I tend to wear down the WASD keys out of habit...
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I was looking at the Microsoft Surface Pros, but heard they have terrible pen jitter so I was reconsidering and hoping to expand my outlook. I would like to get the laptop before this coming August if any new models are coming out that might fit my weird requirements. I use a Huion H610 Pro tablet for art, so if any laptop has similar pen quality to that, I would love it (but it's not necessary). I am currently using an old Asus Strix from 2016ish that I recently got from a family member. That PC hits most of my requirements other than note-taking, but it's just taking too much space and is too heavy since I run around 5 miles of campus each day.

USA, <$400 laptop for creative writing

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 05:14 AM PST

(This post has been remade twice, since I forgot the flair the first time I posted in the official format)

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $400, United States.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, as long as there's warranty on the product.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
2-in-1 would be best but isn't mandatory.
      Build quality is important.
Performance needs to be sufficient for basic multitasking and indie games (an Ideapad One might struggle, I think).
      Battery life is secondary.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
It should not be so heavy it's desk-bound, beyond that it's whatever.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Not too small, not too unwieldy - 14-18 inches I guess.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I need something with basic Windows gaming capabilities (Steam, indie+retro games).
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Mostly thinking of 2D games like Celeste or Stardew Valley.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Screen quality is the most important thing, as I want something easy on the eyes during extended operation. (I remember having a Thinkpad Edge E145 where this was a major issue) [so, IPS 1080+ screens preferred.]
I intend to supplement with an external keyboard and mouse, as the main purpose is writing, but the internal keyboard and touchpad should not be terrible.
I care about longevity and avoiding devices with known obsolescence issues / built-in points of mechanical failure (The hinges on said E145 come to mind.)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I am currently looking at a refurbished Acer Spin 3 SP314-21-R56W.
I would strongly prefer not to buy from Amazon.

    USA, ~$1500 budget

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 04:29 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Purchasing in the US, budget is around USD $1500

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I'm looking for a gaming laptop, so performance and build quality are most important to me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I don't want it to be the bulkiest thing ever, but I won't be bringing it everywhere with me all the time, so it doesn't need to be very light and portable.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14-16"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Yes, I'm gaming. I frequently play:
      Stardew Valley
      Roblox
      Minecraft
      The Sims 4
      Destiny 2
      Genshin Impact
      Wolfquest: Anniversary Edition
      DOOM

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Medium/High, possibly Ultra settings, at least 50 FPS between medium-high but I'm okay with not getting the best framerate at ultra

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build quality, good keyboard, backlit keyboard (preferably RGB or white)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
My last laptop was an Acer Predator Helios 300 with a GTX 1660ti, i7-9750H, and 16GB memory. I'm not looking to downgrade from this in terms of performance or capability, but I'll accept something that's roughly the same (or better, of course). However, I don't want this computer again. Broke in a year and a half, won't work anymore. I don't want another Predator when mine broke unexpectedly.
I've also had a Lenovo Yoga A12 in the past that was very buggy and honestly one of the worst devices I've ever owned. I don't trust Lenovo products very much because of that one, but if you think you can change my mind, I'll listen. It was just one device and probably one of Lenovo's worst.
