Should I wait to buy new 12th gen Intel/ amd laptop

    Posted: 29 Jan 2022 02:35 AM PST

Hi, I currently have an msi gs66 stealth i711800h with Rtx 3060 6gb vram and 1tb storage 16gb ram. It typically lasts 8 hrs with video playback but I'm considering sending it back to the retailer to wait and buy a 12th gen intel laptop or amd, the main driving factor being efficiency and more battery life, I get 8 hrs playing vlc but surely intels new cpus will last much longer and amd are claiming 24 hrs on their cpus. Do you think I should return to buy a new laptop with new CPU later in the year? my return period ends Monday

HP Omen 16 vs Dell Inspiron 16 Plus

    Posted: 29 Jan 2022 01:28 AM PST

Hello to everyone ! I am having a hard time to decide between the 2 following laptops : HP Omen 16 (Ryzen 7 5800H + Radeon RX6600M) vs Dell Inspiron 16 Plus (Intel Core I7 11800H + Nvidia RTX3060). Except from the CPU they both have 16GB of RAM and 1To SSD.

The HP Omen has a better refresh rate (165hz vs 60hz), response time (3ms vs 35ms) and TGP (100W vs 60W) but will it be useful for casual gaming ?

On the other hand the Dell has a better definition (3K), battery life, and I really love his design more (thinner, sober, lighter, thinner bezels, aluminium vs plastic...) and it is important to me.

Here is a link to a comparator between tech specs of the laptops : https://nanoreview.net/en/laptop-compare/hp-omen-16-2021-amd-vs-dell-inspiron-16-plus-7610?m=b.2_c.1_d.2_g.2_r.1_s.2-and-b.2_c.2_g.3_r.2_s.3

Price at the time I am writing this (thanks to various discounts in my country) :

    DELL Inspiron 16 Plus : 1400€

    HP Omen 16 : 1296€

I will be using it mainly for everyday use (browsing, youtube, movies and series) but I am looking for good GPUs because I want to be able to do some casual gaming (very occasionally fps) and I expect it to last at least 5 years or more and still be able to do some casual gaming with the new games that will be always more demanding.

I have heard that both can have pretty bad trackpad issues, I just don't know which one has a better chance to be functionning properly.

Which one would you advise for me please ?

Thank you very much in advance !

Sorry for the long post and for my writing, I'm not a native english speaker !

    Portable laptop mic

    Posted: 29 Jan 2022 12:19 AM PST

    Hello,

I have a laptop with a broken microphone, the only option I see is to use either a usb microphone or to use one which connects via the audio jack.

The thing is, this being a laptop, the mic needs to be sleek and not noticeable. I did find one which attaches via USB. But the reviews all said that it has terrible audio quality, Anyone know of a solution?

    Thanks!!

What kind of m.2 goes in this slot? Sata or NVME, and what length? It's a Samsung NP730QDA laptop.

Is there any benefit to a 2 in 1 laptop over a tablet with a keyboard peripheral?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2022 11:23 PM PST

The only thing i can think of is that some 2in1 laptops have an extra port or 2. That really doesn't justify the extra cost in my eyes.

Laptop With Full Size Arrow Keys

    Posted: 28 Jan 2022 10:41 PM PST

I'm desperately searching for a laptop with Full-Size arrow keys (none of that compressed arrow stuff) that is also NOT a gaming laptop, since the battery life is terrible. Any suggestions?

    $1300 range laptop - suggestions?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2022 09:05 PM PST

I'm looking for a higher-end laptop with a beefy CPU (Ryzen 7 and above with at least 6 cores), at least 16gb of RAM (DDR4 or 5), but a mid-range GPU (higher-end GTX or lower end RTX). My purpose is to run several VMs at a time and possibly stream. I'm not a hardcore gamer and don't need to get the highest frames or play the most demanding games. Just casual games i.e. Planetside 2, Hearts of Iron 4, and Squad from time to time. I prefer HP, Dell, Asus, and Acer but any brand would do if it's good enough.

Let me know of suggestions or if I should rethink my requirements.

So, I agreed to check out a friend's hard drive but like... is this even fixable? She rinsed it in soap after it had dried out from being in the sea. The platters aren't shiny at all, they're like slightly corroded metal even. Way out of my depth here.

    Which is better: Inspiron 14 5410 i7 11390h vs Thinkpad x13 AMD r7 5850u

    Posted: 28 Jan 2022 08:32 PM PST

I am trying to decide between these two but cannot find a lot of articles and reviews online.

    Option 1: Inspiron 14 5410 i7 11390h https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/inspiron-14-laptop/spd/inspiron-14-5410-laptop/nn5410eyxnh

    Option 2: Thinkpad x13 amd r7 5850u https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadx/x13-amd-g2/20xh002nus

Basic specs I need: 16GB RAM, 512 SSD, Lightweight, at least i7 or r7

Price Note: Where I'm getting them from, the ThinkPad is more expensive only by $100

My purpose is for basic personal use: Ms office documents, light video editing, light graphics, lots of internet research

I am not very technical, and this is the first time I'm buying a laptop, so I would appreciate any help and guidance on what factors to consider between the two.

Looking For A Laptop For Graphic Design Work

    Posted: 28 Jan 2022 03:06 PM PST

    Hi all,

been looking for a new laptop for a while and still not quite sure what to go with.

The most intensive programs I'll be running are Adobe's Creative Cloud along with a number of other small and less intensive painting, design and workflow ones. (VMware, Affinity, Krita).

My budget is around $700 - $900 and I would be open to buying refurbished or used if it was a good deal.

any laptop brand that does not manufacture in China?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2022 05:31 PM PST

I want to buy a laptop in India and I cant find any laptop brand that doesn't make in China. Even Taiwanese brands are manufacturing their products in mainland China. Is finding a tech product that's somehow not linked to China even possible today?

Acer spin 3 I5 10th gen. Worth it?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2022 05:00 PM PST

I am looking for one "cheap" second hand 2 in 1 or convertible.

Normally when I search for used laptops I tend to go to lenovo thinkpad, dell latitude, hp elitebook, etc but in this case I dont find good really good deals on these brands mainly bc many of them runs under 8gen i5 processor and as far as I am concerned 8gen was a big improvement over previous gens (correct me if I am wrong). Maybe I am overstimating cpu performance but I want smth that will last around 5-7 years without issues.

So in this situation and I came across an acer spin 3 with these specs: i5 1035g1, 8gb ram (not upgradeable, maybe a big flaw of the deal), 500gb ssd and full hd screen. All of that for 299€.

On the other hand thinkpad x1 yoga or dell 5285 with i5-7u or i5-6u, for example, tends to go for more than that (around 350-400€), surface models obviously over these prices.

I only want the laptop for university usage, youtube videos, web browsing, etc, not heavy demmanding programs or gaming.

In this case what would you go for? Some more "premium" with worse specs and more expensive or should I stick to acer deal?

Do you think the asus can be a good buy? Or should I go for "professional" brands?

Thinking of it it acer has better cpu and price but other models (thinkpad, dell, etc) may have better build quality and more ram memory so they may be more durable models

It is i5-10gen a huge improvement over i5-7gen in this case so I should opt for compromise build quality?

I know it is a personal decision but I would like to get your opinions and experiences

    Thanks

Can I Use The Same Laptop Charger For Two Different Laptops?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2022 04:35 PM PST

I have a laptop charger for an MSI Modern 15 (2020) that uses the exact same plug size as a Toshiba Satellite S50D-A-10G that I bought from eBay. It didn't come with a charger so the MSI one is the only charger I have. Can I use it for both or do I have to buy a universal laptop charger?
