You were right. 1080p to 1440p is a huge difference.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:36 PM PST

You may remember the post a made a little over a week ago. I asked if 1440p was really worth it and 95% of the 600+ comments said yes. So I bought one. I got it today and set it up and man it is night and day. I ended up getting the Acer Predator XB3.

To anyone wondering if it's worth the upgrade, 100% yes only if you are able to handle it. I don't think it's worth upgrading an entire computer for. And its definitely not worth feeling bad about not having. I could still go back to 1080 and be content.

Thank you all. I wouldn't have done it without your all's recommendations.

    HP Omen 30L w/ 3080ti started smoking

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 08:56 PM PST

I thought I had found a great black friday/cyber monday deal via this verge article. It was an OMEN 30L Desktop GT13-1365xt, which came with a 3080ti (not branded) and a watercooled i7 11700k for $2400. Not bad given the current climate.

Booting up RDR2 I got into the settings, turned everything to ultra, and started a benchmark test. Computer instantly turns into a jet engine. It gets through the benchmark (1440p Ultra @ 112fps avg), but completely turns off within a minute of sitting on the results screen. No bluescreen or anything.

I figure it overheated, so I give it 15 min to cool down with a fan and try to boot it up. Nothing. I take it to a different socket, check the general gpu/cpu wires inside, and plug it in again. When I hit the power button, the computers lights turn on and the gpu starts smoking. Never in 12 years of building computers have I seen anything like this, so just thought I'd give a general warning to the community to steer wayyyyy clear of the Omen line. It's not worth the cost savings to get a no name GPU that'll burn down your house.

    Built my First PC!!!

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 08:49 PM PST

    https://imgur.com/a/ZTFJYOi

Hey yall I finally built a PC so I wouldn't have to use my laptop to game on. To prep, I had been putting items on pc part picker for over 2 months looking at what a good fit would be, and finally bought it on black Friday for some additional savings. I also watched like 20 LTT videos on building pcs. All the parts came in today and I couldn't wait so I put it together.

    Parts list: CPU | Intel Core i5-11600K 3.9 GHz 6-Core Processor | $249.99 @ B&H CPU Cooler | Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition 42 CFM CPU Cooler | $39.99 @ Amazon Motherboard | Asus ROG STRIX B560-A GAMING WIFI ATX LGA1200 Motherboard | $169.99 @ Amazon Memory | G.Skill Ripjaws V 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory | $59.99 @ Amazon Storage | Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive | $64.98 @ Amazon Case | Cougar MX340 ATX Mid Tower Case | $49.99 @ B&H Power Supply | Corsair CXM 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply | $39.99 @ Newegg Operating System | Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit | $108.78 @ Other World Computing | Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts | | Total (before mail-in rebates) | $803.70 | Mail-in rebates | -$20.00 | Total | $783.70 | Generated by PCPartPicker 2021-12-01 23:39 EST-0500 |

I realized afterwards the B560-a boards don't allow overclocking but I probably won't overclock either way. I just got the i5-11600k because it was on sale and I needed integrated graphics while I wait for a GPU to fall into my shopping cart at a good deal.

I'm surprised with my self I thought it would have taken me longer but I finished in 2 hours and 30 minutes with just enough time for me to download zoom to hop on to a Physics Lab XD.

After the class, I started looking into everything to make sure it all was working but noticed my ram speeds were LOW. I tried enabling XMP 2 which on the ram sticker itself says it supports it. It took several boots and changes to the bios to realize I put the ram in the wrong spots, I put it in A1 and B1 instead of A2 and B2.

Unfortunately, I don't have a graphics card yet. Waiting for the GPU market to lower is never-ending and ill probably try to score a used 2080 or a cheap 3060 on Newegg shuffle. For now, I can handle gaming on medium to low graphics with the intel UHD 750 graphic which is pretty decent.

PLEASE HELP to switch from an Intel to Ryzen CPU

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 09:55 PM PST

So I am wanting to upgrade from an Intel I7-7700k to a Ryzen 7 5800X and I know I need to upgrade my motherboard too. The current mobo I have is an ASUS TUF z270 Mark 2 and I am probably gonna upgrade to an ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F Gaming. The issue I am having is there is a warning on PC part picker saying, "The Asus ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard supports the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 3.8 GHz 8-Core Processor with BIOS version 1004. If the motherboard is using an older BIOS version, upgrading the BIOS will be necessary to support the CPU."

I am not sure what it means when talking about upgrading the BIOS version.

Any help or recommendation would be greatly appreciated!

Safe to reuse an old GPU in new build? - Antec TruePower Quattro 1.2KW

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 12:04 AM PST

My current setup is ~10 years old and I'm looking to get a new build soon.

However the old/current build has an expensive PSU that I didn't really stress and I was wondering if it's a good idea to save a few hundered $$ by reusing it.

The PSU is a 1.2KW Antec TruePower Quattro

    • Is it reasonable to reuse this part in a new build that I intend to keep for many years, or am I just asking for trouble?

Are there any other factors I need to consider in making the call?

    Aio or fan cooler?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 11:08 PM PST

I want to get a new cooler for my Ryzen 9, I have the stock one. I've looked at a few AIO but there's soo many. I have a large case with brackets for fans (on the top at least) so I'll have no problem with room. I'd like something rgb, but I can live without it.

    Is this a good deal?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 11:07 PM PST

I wanted to build a pc but didn't even realize this whole gpu situation was happening. I found a local custom builder and he has a couple pcs for sale. I don't know current prices so is this a massive rip off considering the parts?

Is this a good build for the price? With this build would I be able to handle most new games and edit 4k video? The next step up is getting a 4k computer from this company and that sounds intense. The build looks nice I just hate the case it's in but hunting for a gpu sounds impossible and time consuming.

Would a build like this last a long time and be able to play top games and edit content or is this gonna fall behind in just a year or two? I guess I'd rather spend more to future Proof myself the need a better computer in a couple of years?

Is regularly using 99% of my GPU bad for it?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 10:31 PM PST

Whenever I play games that have mildly sophisticated graphics my CPU is being utilized at 99%. The temperature never goes above mid 70s for my GPU and there are never any crashes. My CPU utilization has never gone over 30%. I just want to make sure I'm not ruining my GPU by doing this.

I have a Radeon 5500 xt GPU and a AMD 3600x CPU. TIA!

If I'm looking at a 3080ti, considering my other parts, should I upgrade from my 750w PSU?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 04:18 PM PST

    - Ryzen 9 3900x

    - MEG x570 ACE mobo

    - EVGA 750 GR gold+

Currently with my 2080ti, the computer shuts off infrequently while gaming, so I have to flip the I/O power switch on the PSU off and back on before the computer will let me power it back up. I've always assumed it was from the PSU being too weak, so I'm seriously doubting whether it will be strong enough for a 3080ti. Your thoughts on whether I should upgrade the PSU?

Not recognizing NVME on fresh build

My friend has built his PC but for some reason the NVME drive is not showing up when installing Windows. He has reseated the drive several times and no change. He followed these instructions but it did not show any compatible drivers. Is there anything that needs to be done or something we are missing? Thanks!

Should I get a Ryzen 7 5700g or wait for the 6000 series?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:48 PM PST

Currently, I have an i5 3570 paired with an RX 480 8GB. I have a feeling GPU prices will come down soon so I'm planning on selling the 480 and for the time being, I wanna get an APU in case prices don't drop for GPUs. I also just want a CPU upgrade. I know the ryzen 6000 series is coming out in Jan 2022 so is it worth the wait or should I get a 5700g for around $280? I'm asking because I know once the 6000 series APUs come out it could be expensive for DDR5 and the new socket.

Help me choose a monitor for gaming

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 09:58 PM PST

Hi guys. Any advice on a good monitor ?
It has to be 4k resolution, as many inches as possible, HDMI, good image quality, 120 hz, 144hz, but 60 is also ok, the smaller the response time, the better, but not a deal breaker. My budget is about 500-800 euros. I will also take a TV that i can use as a monitor, if theres any good ones.

Bought my friend a RTX 3060 Ti, did we pay too much?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:32 PM PST

My friend paid me to camp outside microcenter to buy him a RTX 3060 Ti on black Friday. I managed to get one for about 589, 638 with tax. Did we pay too much? Cuz I paid around 780 for my 3080 back in Oct of 2020, and yes times have changed but I still thought the price we paid was a bit high. Thoughts?
