    Buying a Surface Product

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 08:38 PM PST

So generally I'm not the one to ask, but with my recent horrible experience with Dell products, I am considering treading very cautiously right now.

I've used Apple product all my life, and recently I got a Dell XPS 9510. It was a defective product that Dell no matter how many times, cannot fix. They further refuse to give me a refund.

I've been looking into getting another mac, but recently, Surface products have caught my attention. They seem to be very well built (little deck flex, screen flex), and generally built with really premium materials. They do seem however to be fairly overpriced. The surface laptop studio which I am considering, has an i5-11300H and a 256gb SSD for over $2000 Canadian. $500 more will get you double the storage and better graphical performance and CPU from a mac. For that particular product I'll give the pass because of the novelty of the hinge.

My main question is how the reliability of these devices are. I've had MacBook's last me 9 years with pretty rough treatment and a battery replacement. Of course I'm not asking for 9 years (more realistically 3-4), but I am truly wondering how long term reliability is. Luckily I'll be dealing with Best Buy instead of the POS company Dell now.

Also, what are the best laptops design wise for surface. I know the studio is the newest, all be it fairly overpriced, but the other ones appear to have large clunky bezels.

Thanks for any feedback or stories that you guys may have.

    Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro 14" (5800H vs 5800HS + MX450)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 10:40 PM PST

Hi all, I have decided to buy Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro 14" but I am hesitating which specification I should get. I will be using it for web development, browsing internet, watching movie and playing the sims 4 (full expansion pack) occasionally.

    The difference between these two:

    Yoga Slim 7 Pro (5800H) Yoga Slim 7 Pro (5800HS + MX450)
    2.8K IPS 400nits 2.8K OLED, HDR400, 400 nits
    16 GB DDR4 3200MHz 16 GB LPDDR4X-4266 MHz
    512GB SSD 1TB SSD
    Integrated AMD Radeon Vega 8 MX450 2GB GDDR6
    USD950 USD999

I wanted to get 5800h at first, but I am not sure is Vega 8 will be able to let me to play the sims 4 or even the sims 5 (which might released next year) smoothly. The most important thing is I found a really great deal on the 5800HS + MX450 version on Lenovo store! I will get a lot more with only $50.

The only drawback is the 5800HS + MX450 need more than 10 weeks to ship while 5800H only need 3-6 business day, according to the website. I am not in hurry to get it because I still have another laptop to use, but more than 10 weeks to ship seems like too long.

I would like to get some advice here, is 5800HS + MX450 really worth to wait for 10 weeks and how worse is the battery life will be on MX450 + OLED compare to integrate graphic card + IPS?

    Thanks a lot!

Is my Lenovo IdeaPad 330 worth upgrading?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 12:36 AM PST

I started working on heavy programs lately (Mainly Autodesk apps). And I have a Lenovo IdeaPad 330 with i5-82500U CPU. And it's not handling it very well. I got the budget for a new RAM and SSD. So, should i upgrade or wait and buy a new one?

*Any suggestions for any option would be much appreciated.

Is my laptop faulty or did i do something wrong installing my operating system

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 03:06 AM PST

I got a Thinkpad e14 gen3, 3 days back and i've been noticing the laptop just randomly shuts down in the middle of work, Overheating??, yes that could be the issue, but the laptop shuts down when i assign it any kind of task,
I installed windows, opened the notepad, wrote some lines of text, as i click save, it shuts down and reboots the system, tried opening a file, read it's contents for around 10 minutes, click on cancel, and the laptop shuts down
well windows indeed is heavy, i decide to install my beloved arch(mind you i've been installing arch and practicing with it for an year), so i kinda know when i am actually wrong in the os installation

i download neofetch and htop, my ram usage is 300mb and my cpu is running at 2%, Great!!, i decide to install some packages, 2 packages are installed the ram is about 350mb and cpu is still hovering around 2-3%, so i go ahead and install 5-6 packages, while constantly checking if my laptop is heating or not, the laptop FUCKING shuts down, with no major issues of overheating, or any kind of heat at all
and all my packages are broken and i cant access the terminal!!!

any kind of advice related to my problem would be really helpful

Will my current laptop be fast enough for the following things I'll use it for in a couple of months?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 01:59 AM PST

My current laptop has the following specs:

i5-1135G7, 12 GB RAM, 512 GB PCIe NVMe SSD

I intend to use it for:

AutoCAD (college level), C# (college level), maybe some light game development (low-poly 3D games) and some other things I know it can handle (so my query is only about AutoCAD, C# and game development)

Can I use this device as it is? Or will an i7-1165G7 with 16 GB RAM be needed for a smooth experience?

BTW, there is a possibility that I will be instead given a hand-me-down laptop with an i5-6200U, 12 GB RAM and a HDD. How fast would that be if I replace the drive with an SSD?

Trying to find a good price to sell my laptop at.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 10:07 PM PST

I Have had this Asus ROG gl502vm laptop for awhile and was thinking of selling it so that I could get a upgrade I was looking for its price on ebay and it sells for around $700 but I thought this price seemed a bit too high so I wanted to ask what the people of r/laptops think is a good price for my laptop.

    Here or the specs-

    Processor- Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @2.60Ghz

Graphics Card- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060

Installed Ram- 24gb ddr4 (i don't know if the ram stick that came soldered on to the motherboard is ddr4)

    CPU Speed- 3.5 GHz

Storage- 237gb SSD and 931gb HDD

    Display- 60Hz

If there is anything I missed please ask me in the comments!

Anyways the laptop itself has no damage but you can tell that it has been used.

Lastly I am planning on replacing the battery on this laptop before selling it so it has a new one since it does have problems lasting off of its charged battery life but thats its only real problem and I plan to fix it.

Please tell me below what you think a fair price is for this laptop and thank you for reading this.

How to identify the bottleneck which causes low fps (LAPTOP)?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 01:24 AM PST

My fps has recently dropped and the same games which were fine a week ago are stuttering and crashing now. I plan on cleaning the cooling fan, but I wanted to know on how to identify if the issue is due to low RAM or due to my graphics card.

    RAM: 8 GB

Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 2GB

    External wifi cards?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 06:11 PM PST

Hi I have an asus rog scar 15 with a 3080, but I've found that it's wifi card (mediatek) is notoriously not working. The laptop has an ethernet port on the back and i was wondering if there were any external wifi cards/receivers on the market? I know about the usb ones but if i could save the usb port and use the ethernet port instead that'd be ideal. Which also leads me to ask if the usb ones are as fast as an ethernet one. (assuming they exist)

    Thank you!!

Hello, owing for long time Asus i5 2410m GeForce gt520m notebook 8gbram ssd 500gb Used to have fun with Photoshop, Fusion and some vector sw to build pics and 3d prints. A friend give me for free a brand new Hp 250 i3 6100u notebook 4gb ram and hdd Thinking about to upgrade hp i3 to 16mb ram and ssd to replace my old tired Asus. Found some comparisons of two machines and they seems quite similar except GeForce on i5. Upgrading i3 that's a waste of money? Thx Emanuele

    Power Adaptor gets too hot

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 04:45 PM PST

I bought an HP 15 inch model: 15-dy2024nr laptop. The power adaptor gets really hot, even when the laptop is fully charged and mostly idle. It doesn't get hot enough to burn my skin but still the temperature doesn't seem normal to me. Trying to decide if I should return the laptop. The laptop itself seem to be working fine. The adaptor is 45w. I tried connecting to different power outlets but same problem.

EDIT: The laptop fan seem to be running most of the time.

    Any thoughts?
