Comcast delivers 90% working latency reductions by deploying AQM Posted: 02 Dec 2021 09:25 AM PST Comcast rolled out their AQM technology over the last few months, with really marvelous results, a 90% reduction in "working latency". The CDF plot buried at the end is to die for. https://blog.apnic.net/2021/12/02/working-latency-the-next-qoe-frontier/ It's been a long, long 10 years fighting bufferbloat, and my end goal has always been that everyone, especially those with limited service, had some form of AQM on by default. But has anyone noticed? [link] [comments] |
Is there any way of keeping my anonymity online? Posted: 01 Dec 2021 11:34 PM PST Hi everyone! I'm not an internet security expert, so I apologize if my questions seem silly. Given the constant news about data leaks, I'm more and more worried about my privacy on the Internet. And since I recently read that my ISP has access to the history of my browser and data about what I downloaded, I began to think about how to prevent them from spying on me. Unfortunately, I only recently paid attention to the fact that most of the sites I visit are HTTP, and the ISP can see all my actions on those sites. I can't say that I'm threatened with any severe punishment for my online activity, but I wouldn't want it to turn against me sooner or later. Looking for a way to prohibit ISP from spying on me, I came across a recommendation to install VPN or use the TOR browser. I didn't see any meaning in choosing TOR since it seemed way too much for what I do on the Internet. Besides, I read in some reviews that the service often lags due to a large number of users. So after reading the reviews on many sources similar to https://bestvpnprovider.co/, I chose ExpressVPN as one of the most reliable providers. Judging by their statements, it completely hides my activity from the ISP, which is good news. But I'm worried that using the VPN, I allow it to see my traffic. So, in reality, it just turns out that I changed ISP to VPN, and my traffic is still stored somewhere. I'd be grateful if you could advise any other solutions that could help me stay anonymous online. Is it even possible, or is internet privacy just a myth? Is it possible to go online without someone knowing about it? I'd also appreciate it if you could share any links where a novice can learn more about security and anonymity on the Internet, as I'm thinking about making it my profession in the future. Thanks. Posted: 02 Dec 2021 09:49 AM PST Hello everyone I really don't know if this is a question I can ask here. But I have been looking for ways to spoof the location of my phone/pc to browse the internet like in the USA. The first thing that came to my mind was a VPN or a proxy server hosted my me. but when I tried a vpn to test this I used a website that can tell exactly where you are and gave exactly my location. so if I try to enter a web site the will know my real location hence making the vpn worthless to browse the internet like in the USA. My question here is how do I spoof my location completely to browse the internet without websites knowing my real location and making theme think I am 100% in the USA? then again sorry if the question is not proper for this subreddit. Please help me choose a wireless access point. Posted: 02 Dec 2021 11:17 AM PST I'm super new at all of this, but my 3-floor home is pre-wired with ethernet lines in a few locations throughout the house while the modem and router are located in the back corner of the basement. Specifically, I'm in an ~3,000 sq. ft. place and have ethernet pre-wired to the ceiling above the front entry on the main floor, which is right next to the home office where I WFH, but on the opposite end of my house from most of the media (though I may just have someone come out and run a direct ethernet to that area for gaming, streaming, etc.). I also have a pre-wired location for an access point on the top floor where all of the bedrooms are, but that's less of a priority right now. I currently have a Nighthawk r7000p router, and gigabit internet but don't necessarily need anything super fancy as I'm largely just streaming and video chatting for work, while the family streams on a device or two as well. I really don't know what I'm doing, so any simple help on what would be a good option for a ceiling mounted WAP for a commoner like me would be very much appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Help debugging local net conflict? Posted: 02 Dec 2021 07:04 AM PST Hi, my setup is an Arris cable modem, with a passive switch (TP-Link TL-SG105) attached to it, and also a Wifi range extender connected via Wifi. Via wires, there are a couple of Windows PCs (one is on the switch and the other is straight into the Arris), a SmartThings hub, and a PS4 and Chromecast Ultra. Then via Wifi there are a couple of cell phones, a printer, a bunch of home tech (wifi sockets, Nest, Awair, etc.). I have had this problem a couple of times (spread over months - the last time was probably 4-6 months ago), where typically overnight, the internet goes down, and at first I think it's Xfinity, but it seems to be a network conflict like a fight over an IP address. What happens is that plug/unplug the passive switch will result in the network coming back up, but only temporarily - for something like 1-5 minutes. The network goes down and comes back up for all devices, both wired and Wifi, so it includes "upstream" devices that are not connected to the switch. What I mean by the network going down is that all devices are unable to access the internet, but they're also unable to access the intranet, in the sense that when the network is in the "down" state, my main PC is connected directly to my router via ethernet, but it's not able to get to the router via a browser. Consistent with this, from what I can tell so far, unplugging the switch appears to result in the rest of the network coming back up and being stable. So I tried plugging the switch back in, with no devices, and the network is stable this way. Then I added devices back, one by one, to the switch. At that point, it seems like my Surface Go, which is one of the four devices on the switch, is the culprit - that is, the network is stable if all devices other than the Go are plugged in. So next, I took the Go off of ethernet, and again I can sustain the net (with it on the Wifi). So I think I have found the source of the problem, but... okay, what next? Thank you!!! Posted: 02 Dec 2021 08:13 AM PST So, i'll soon be moving to a new student apartment. My number 1 option right now has one ethernet port in the wall. Is it possible to plug the RJ45 cable from the wall jack to a router, and then plug devices to the router through either wifi or other RJ45 cables? All help is appreciated! :) [link] [comments] |
experiences with ASUS ZenWiFi 6E System ET8 (2PK) ? Posted: 02 Dec 2021 05:21 AM PST Anyone with experience using the ASUS ZenWiFi 6E System ET8 (2PK) ? It's receiving great reviews, but apparantly, customer reviews on Amazon are often either 5 star or 1 star. The bad reviews talk about devices dropping/disconnecting, especially towards 2.4Ghz smart home devices, and even reviews about bad performance and the satellite losing connection with the base station/router. I urgently need to replace my current AC setup (moved to a new house and I have bad coverage and low speed) but it seems that 6E is not yet ready for prime time? :( [link] [comments] |
PC can't reach other devices on the network. Posted: 02 Dec 2021 10:11 AM PST Today we went to a new ISP, and I'm very saddened to see that I can't reach my ESPs from my PC anymore. I used to be able to just put their IP in, and use them remotely, but now I can't anymore. All of the ESPs are connected via WIFI to the router, and my PC is connected to the router with ethernet. Furthermore what's even weirder is that while I can ping my router from my PC, it does not go the other way around, somehow I just can't ping my PC from the router. The router does show up in my PCs ARP table. The PC and the ESPs also have a Static IP Addresses. Another possible problem is that using Wireshark I checked the network, and my PC(192.168.1.2) doesn't seem to receive any ARP table. Wireshark is full of arp request from my router (Correct me if I'm wrong but it should say "Tell 192.168.1.2, right?"). Does anyone have any tips on how to even troubleshoot this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Dec 2021 08:47 AM PST Greetings everyone First timer here setting up home cctv Getting a company to install the ip cameras that are going to be connected to a NVR with built in POE switch This NVR will then be connected to a managed switch Plan to put the NVR on its own VLAN with firewall rules to block it and remote access through VPN However, my ISP provided router is the TP Link Archer C1200, which doesnt seem to have firewall capabilities im looking for to enforce WAN/LAN in and out rules for ip addresses/groups etc What should my solution be? Some options i thought: 1. Get a better and faster router with firewall capabilities and use my old router as an access point 2. Get a separate hardware firewall eg D Link UTM firewall 3. Is there a way to enforce traffic rules for this VLAN alone at the switch level without needing a separate firewall? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Dec 2021 12:04 PM PST I have been reading about MOCA setups on this subreddit and I just want to make sure I'm doing this right. I made a sketch to clearly show the setup. Black like is coax and blue is ethernet. [link] [comments] |
Can't access router's admin page Posted: 02 Dec 2021 10:30 AM PST Hi all, My Wi-Fi's been acting up recently (while Ethernet still worked), so I reset the router (TP-Link WR1403ND) to factory settings, which removed the password (for access to the network, not admin privileges). I'd downloaded DD-WRT on it before (not sure if that's relevant). After resetting I wanted to restore the network password. I could access the admin page (192.168.1.1), but it made me change my login and crashed right after that every time. I had to reset the router again to access the admin page but it kept crashing. Now I can't even enter the admin page (says it timed out). How do I fix that? [link] [comments] |
HSTS - http redirect not working Posted: 02 Dec 2021 03:20 AM PST Hi I'm running various webservices on my synology NAS. They are all accessible through a domain, with an ssl certificate, and configured to be reached through a reverse proxy. The domain itself is proxied through cloudflare. My issue: I've configured BOTH the reverse proxy and cloudflare to use HSTS, which should redirect all http traffic to https. However, it doesn't. When just type in the domain name, nothing happens - and if I type in the domain name with http:// instead of https:// it won't load either. This is mildly annoying, as i can only reach the website if i specify 'https://' in front of the domain name - somewhat complicating access for other people. I'd be rally glad for some tips or ideas what i could try. [link] [comments] |
Issues with powerline adapters/router/modem location leading me to Orbi WiFi 6 mesh... Posted: 02 Dec 2021 08:52 AM PST I currently own a a AC3200 tri-band router and get a 1 Gbps pipe in from RCN with a separate dedicated modem. It provides decent enough performance for all my needs but does not extend out onto the deck in the back due to it's location (far other end of home) which isn't a huge issue but would it be nice to provide that coverage since we are out there so often. I live in Chicago in a much "longer" home and do not feel like dropping or running cables at the moment. Simplest solution I thought of was to try a combo of powerline adapter and WiFi extender to provide additional coverage out back and also give me the ability to hook up a switch in my office so I can hardwire everything in there and move the NAS (which is out in the living room) into the office. Unfortunately, the powerline adapter just doesn't work properly, despite both ends showing a great/green connection, I only get about 5 Mbps out of it hard wired (which works just fine for a VOIP phone but not for anything else), where I am getting about 900 Mbps hard wired out of the router. The WiFi extender didn't really provide much additional coverage either really just upped the speeds in the far end of the house from about 120 to 250 down, and I am fine with 120 down in that room, it's more about covering the backyard or at least the deck. I am now considering Netgear's Orbi AX4200 mesh system + 1 of the satellites. This way I can hook up the router in the living area and tuck it away due to it's relatively small size and nook I've created that can fight my modem and WiFi behind my fireplace. I can then move the NAS into the office, hard wiring that, my PC, my Xbox and my VOIP phone to the satellite. Since the office sits in the middle of the home my thinking is the satellite in the office will extend the WiFi far enough out back for me to get decent enough coverage out there. Only concern is I have heard thoughts of the satellites not working very well when closer together, these would be separated roughly about 55-60 ft, spanning 3 rooms/hallways. Thoughts? WiFi works better than wired for the past year Posted: 02 Dec 2021 08:37 AM PST I'm in the US. With all the non-mobile stuff in my home, I thought I should use an Ethernet setup for those devices instead of using WiFi for everything. I've been using Xfinity for the past year, although I've wired stuff up since my previous ISP. I'm using the white WiFi router, which supports WiFi 6. It's in the corner bedroom. The four ports go to four Ethernet router boxes. One in the same bedroom, one to each adjacent bedroom, and one to the living room on the other side of the house (long wire). There's also a long wire from the living room box to an Ethernet box in the basement. First, the devices in the basement stopped connecting through wired two years ago. Then the living room devices a year ago. For the two bedrooms adjacent to the corner bedroom, one of them is the most recent room wired, the other the oldest. The most recent room was wired about a year ago, and only took four months before it crapped out. By crapped out, I mean the wired connection works less than 5% of the time. Even the older bedroom works only 90% of the time. I don't use the devices in the room with the Xfinity router often enough to see a dropout. Am I using bad wires? Too long wires? I have 1GB service; that seems to be that speed in the nearby rooms, but the problematic rooms have their download speed the same range as the (slow) upload speed. I'm not sure; I was really enthusiastic a year ago and tested everything, but I don't feel like taking multiple hours now to recheck. I need general advice on what's wrong. And what kind of specialist I should search for to help. [link] [comments] |
Help with constant disconnects, tried everything need input Posted: 02 Dec 2021 06:31 AM PST Setup: Netgear CM1000v2-> Asus RtAx82u->ethernet to xbox/PC I've been with suddenlink for about 3 months now, my internet has been usable for about 1 week of those 3 months. I'm having constant disconnects and massive packet loss issues. I've had techs come out replace the ground block outside, and prior to that I attached my modem directly to the cable coming from the pole and still had notable disconnects. I noticed today when my internet dropped out my SNR on channel 31 is low comparatively to the rest (will attach picture of power levels). I have no idea if this could be the issue or not, but id like to explore every avenue to fix this. The funny thing is a few weeks ago, my friends came over and we all hooked up via ethernet to the router and played for hours on end with no issues. They left and the next night I couldn't even last 10 seconds in a game before rubberbanding all over the place and eventually lagging out. Any and all help is appreciated Power Levels: https://imgur.com/a/sdD5lJT [link] [comments] |
Brand new Laptop (ASUS ROG) randomly keeps dropping connection. Posted: 02 Dec 2021 06:13 AM PST I bought my wife a brand new laptop and we have had it for about one week. However this entire time it has been disconnecting from our network at random for about 10 seconds or so. On the first startup we opted to allow it to install Windows 11 if that matters. First of all we have several PCs and smart devices on our router and none of them have or have had any connection issues. So far we have of course reset everything, updated all drivers and I spent hours online trying to figure out what could be wrong and tried a few suggestions. At this point I have NO idea what to do, or if the laptops adapter is simply sketchy. I am at the point of returning it but everything about it including the sale price was great. Does anyone have any insight on what I should do? Adapter: MediaTek Wi-Fi 6 - MT7921 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Dec 2021 05:34 AM PST Hi there, This is a small office networking issue, but hopefully ok to ask here. We have a server (Windows 2012) on the same domain as the rest of the PCs. If i ping the server name i get a response on the local network. It has RDP set up to allow connections, it has inbound firewall rules to allow RDP connections from local or domain, however a connection cannot be made, RDP will time out saying it couldn't connect. Oddly if i turn on the inbound rule for PUBLIC connections to RDP then it works. I really dont want a public connection open, and cant understand how the DOMAIN inbound rule doesnt cover all the computers on the same domain (i have checked with the following that the domain is the same: systeminfo | findstr /B /C:"Domain" and of course the machine is pingable on the local network). Im imagining this is some network issue or complication im not aware of... If that makes sense to anyone could you point me in the right direction :) thanks [link] [comments] |
Total newbie/Help - AC1900 C80 vs Archer C6 AC1200 ? What's good for my budget and situation Posted: 02 Dec 2021 05:11 AM PST Hello ! I'm not thee best at routers nor any of their specifications at all. What I only know is that I have a $60 budget for routers. And both of these is what I can get at my local mall. I live in asia so shipping really screws me over if I want something from Amazon or B&H. My situation is that my ISP really puts you into hell when it comes to modifying/accessing their router. I genuinely cannot get into my super admin page to do some basic port forwarding, managing user speeds, setting up a static IP, etc. They have to let you sign a waiver which voids all of your warranty and support on what happens to your router. So I'm just planning to bridge it and use the router(s) I've mentioned. My current speed is 50mbp/s fibr connection but with speedtest it gives me 60 ~ 150mbps, 5g support @ 650+ mbps. I just really need to access my admin page to those settings since there has been way too many times I cannot play P2P games due to a strict NAT type. Calling my ISP does jack shit about it. Also, they've apparently blocked Imgur, Imgbox and certain image/video hosting websites — so I wanna tinker about that as well. Edit: I forgot to mention the users. One (me) using ethernet cable and then there's 4 users using in the WiFi but some family members are on vacation. Safe bet is there's gonna be a max of 7 ~ 8 users. [link] [comments] |

Are CAT8 ethernet cables worth it? Posted: 02 Dec 2021 08:43 AM PST I'm trying to connect 2 mesh routers that are around 25 metres apart with an ethernet cable. I get around 500 Mbps download speeds and I'm using 2 wifi 6 mesh routers. I want to make sure that I get the maximum speeds. Is there any noticeable difference is speed or ping when using a CAT8 cable vs CAT6? Are the CAT8 cables on Amazon really CAT8? How do I tell which ones are real? [link] [comments] |
UK BT SmartHub 2 - happy with performance, not happy with coverage. Posted: 02 Dec 2021 03:58 AM PST Is there any way to improve coverage? I was thinking about attaching external antennas, I can see some connectors on mainboard, has anyone managed to use them? [link] [comments] |

How to block foreign edge locations with hostnames in firewall? Posted: 02 Dec 2021 03:46 AM PST Hello there, Backstory: I have one of the newer Comcast router/modem. I game a lot and recently have been playing the new Halo: Infinite. After scouring Reddit I see they use Microsoft's Azure Cloud Services and sometimes it routes games to really far foreign edge-locations which results in high ping and sometimes packet loss, (I die a lot around corners—it may be poor netcode, but that's another issue I won't dive into). Question: My question is, How can I find the hostnames so that I can block them in my firewall so that I force my router to use closer servers? I assume I block the hostnames in my Windows Firewall? Then let my router do its thing? Please correct my logic if I'm off, I'm a newbie [link] [comments] |
