    Are gaming routers a scam?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 02:53 PM PST

I'm interested in buying a router and a couple of WAP's to go with my 1Gb network.

My question is should I be buying a enterprise router like a Ubiquity Dream Machine Pro or a Gaming specific router like the Asus GT-AXE11000?

If anyone knows why would you choose one over the other?

Edit: Thanks for all the help guys/gals. Think I'm gonna get a NUC and put PFSense on it and pair it with a Ubiquity WAP to see how it goes. As a novice I'm sure I'll be back here, it's good to know there's an active, helpful networking sub :)

    How to improve wifi connection?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 09:43 PM PST

Hi, all so basically in the entire house my room receives the worse wifi as the modem is around 10m away from my room and has to pass through 2 walls.

I tried using wifi extender but it is extremely inconsistent and also causes a lot of distortion, lag during online lessons.

Additional info: I have no ethernet ports in my room and I cannot run a powerline from my wifi modem as I have a dog in the house and he will try biting the wires

Any help on how to improve my wifi connection, please?

    Small office/warehouse/home network solution

    Posted: 04 Dec 2021 02:18 AM PST

I have fibre optic cable connected to my company building that consist of small office with attached warehouse and then my home stands like 30 meters behind it. As it was for now I had router from network provider (ZTE ZXHN F660) set as access point (it had 2 LAN ports reserved for TV or whatnot, but it is now unlocked 4 ports router with fibre-optic plugged in) then there's a TP-Link Archer C2 as a main source of WiFi and LAN in the office. By LAN ports there are 3 cables going out (used to be more but we went for more wifi oriented devices - one for the house, one for the server-PC that is a base for our sale system and third one goes to the warehouse to keep the WiFi coverage and the warehouse old Thinkpad has terrible WiFi card so it works on LAN cable from second TP-Link Archer C2 set up exactly the same as the office one. Wifi is needed for the payment terminal. House has own two routers and as for now it works just fine. Here's the deal:

The office TP-Link router acts wonky and shuts off some ports at random times, so it has to be swapped and I was wondering on how I could set up the network at work to be more efficient. There is 2 pcs and 2 laptops constantly working on our open time, along with 5 phones being connected to WiFi at work and then at the house there's also a laptop, at 1-2 samtphones at the time and TV all connected at the same time. Should I just swap the router for the new one, start using the ZTE router as it's possible now, or there is some more efficient, maybe dedicated solution to have it work better? As the pandemic started we only have direct sells through the warehouse, not letting customers to the office, but the server based system lags a bit and sending a printing demand to the server and back to the printed connected to warehouse laptop takes an annoyingly long time, same as trying to quickly put couple variables in the system to search from around 8k unique stock position with multiple variables.

Really sorry if it seems chaotic, I'm obviously not a native speaker so I could slip in some terms/sentences that makes sense in my language, but not necessarily in English.

    Router good Enough?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 08:24 AM PST

I consistently get 90mbps DL speed but pay for 200mbps through Spectrum. Etherent + WiFi is always 17-21 ping, 90mbps down and 11 up.

I had service tech come out today to see what can be fixed. He removed some splitters and made sure connection was good. Ethernet directly to my modem (NETGEAR Nighthawk CM1100 DOCSIS 3.1) is 230mbps.

So it must be my router even though it is fully capable of up to 300mbps dual band. (TL-WDR3500 N600 Wireless Dual Band Router) What settings can I change on the router to fix this issue OR is this router really not capable of what it says it is. I know its older but its not that old.

If I need to replace what do y'all recommend? I use UniFi APs for my WiFi.

Router as extender vs extender as itself which one to use?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2021 01:28 AM PST

A noob in this regard. So I've two routers and one extender. Want to extend the signal so that the very end of my home gets strong connection.my question is should I use the router as an extender or the extender. I've heard that repeaters halves the bandwidth. Not sure if that is the case for extenders since the extender has a dedicated wifi SSID in my case. Wired extension isn't an option for me for technical reasons. Any sort of advice would be highly appreciated. My devices are as follows:

    Mi alot 3600x (primary router)

    Mi 4a router (backup)

    Mi wifi extender (extender)

Complicated VPN to access segmented network w/ NVR

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 06:29 PM PST

Hi all, I have a Reolink NVR that I've segmented on its own network and is locked down as to not let video footage leak out (I don't trust these cameras and NVR made in China that phone home there or require their cloud).

To access the NVR recordings in the segmented network, it requires either their mobile app or a fat client on windows. And since I've blocked all outbound access on that network thereby breaking its cloud relay, the device with that the app or client needs to be on same network as the NVR for access to work. Not a problem when I'm at home..

When away from home, I don't have a solution yet. I have a VPN, but my VPN network is not the same network as the one where the NVR is thus the mobile app won't work.

Any ideas how I could solve this? I have a PFSense firewall with all the various tools like HAProxy and such but not sure how to VPN in and then make it as though my iPhone is on the same network as the segmented NVR network to access it.

    Focused short distance wireless repeater

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 11:46 PM PST

Does something like the one in the video above exist? It transmits/receives Ethernet signal wirelessly but it is focused and is intended for short distance (passing through a single wall) so that it has (almost) the same latency/bandwidth as wired Ethernet?

Second Ethernet switch - Slow Speeds?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 02:26 PM PST

Hello. I recently got a second (uncontrolled) ethernet switch to expand my ports. I have 1.2Gbps internet.

    My current setup is:

1Gbps Moca (Motorola) -> TP-Link 5 port gigabit uncontrolled ethernet switch -> 25ft. cat 7 ethernet switch -> Netgear 5 port gigabit ethernet switch -> devices

My problem is, the devices connected to the second switch are only getting a max of 75 Mbps. I don't know why this is? I read somewhere that you need a dedicated patch cable to daisy chain Ethernet switches for them to work properly. I'm not trained in networking so everything i know is self-taught. sould use some advice. I pay for gigabit speeds so I want to use it.

cant decide on a modem & router

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 09:55 PM PST

so i have xfinity, currently using their modem/router (edit: btw my current gateway is Arris TG1682G) . my plan is currently 600 mbps. the main thing i even need to switch for is to be able to get ULA ip addresses so that i can use a new pihole i setup with ipv6. currently i believe a lot of traffic is through ipv6 and so the adblocking isnt working much. and xfinity's router doesnt allow you to turn off ipv6, and when i looked for a ULA address for the pihole it doesnt have one.

the thing is that every router i look into i see complaints about connectivity or other issues. for instance, ive seen people talking about tp-link's tether app basically requiring a subscription to really be able to customize things through the router's settings, and other complains about speed, or dropped network, having to restart the router every day, or just those types of things.

so im looking for a suggestion. i do need to buy a modem too and would prefer if they are both under $150 each, but even less would be good. also, figured getting wifi 6 wouldnt hurt since id prefer this to last for years to come and so if i can afford it why not.

but really the main things are 1. want to be able to go into the router settings and create static ip, 2. access device ULA addresses for ipv6 (and turn off ipv6 if needed), and 3. pretty much just have the ability to perform well and last so i dont need to buy another which is why im considering just going with wifi6 and higher speed than i currently have.

one i looked at was: TP-Link AX5400 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX73) (amazon link)

but again, concerned about the router settings being locked behind a tether subscription based on reviews, and a review talking about needing to reboot every night (sounds like a flaw to me as i currently dont experience that), as well as others talking about other issues.

a modem i checked out was: Motorola MB8600 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem

the reviews seem fine but unfortunately they seem to be grouped with all reviews for 3 different modems so its a bit confusing. and came out in 2017 so wondering if it would be worth it to just go with the newer 2020 model but tbh the price is a bit high for me and those speeds are something i doubt i will ever need (2.5gb compared to 1gb for the posted link).

    thoughts on any of this?

    Deco M4 setup questions

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 09:45 PM PST

Hi there! My dad decided to upgrade our internet plan to 100 Mbps and got two Deco M4s as part of the deal. I successfully managed to set up both devices and I have a couple of questions.

    1. The ISP originally supplied us with an integrated modem/router made by Huawei. It's pretty shit considering it only supports 2.4 GHz. From my understanding, one node always has to be connected to it via ethernet, right?

    2. What operation mode should I go for, Wireless Router or Access Point? I guess the former would be better since the Huawei modem/router isn't anything special, but I don't know.

    3. Would it be alright for me to disable the SSID broadcast of the original modem/router, or should I leave it on and rename the SSIDs of the nodes so that they're the same with the router? Which is preferable?

    Thanks in advance!

Having difficulties setting up goCoax MoCA 2.5 Adapters. No MoCA light is on.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 05:53 PM PST

Here is my current network setup. https://i.imgur.com/S80nNVh.png

The Moca adapter connected to the router shows a solid light for LAN and Power, but the Moca light is dark. The second Moca adapter also shows a light for power and shows nothing for Moca (the LAN light blinks, but it's obvious its not connecting with the Moca network).

I have tried the second Moca adapter in a few different ports around the house and can't get anything to work. I recently moved in here, so I have no proof if any of them are technically connected, but that would be weird.

Is my setup okay? Is it maybe a flaw in my house? Is there anything else I should try?

I would absolutely love to have a wired connection in my office/bedroom, so I would be pretty bummed if I couldn't get Moca to work...

How to connect multiple webpass/google fiber jacks to same network

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 09:19 PM PST

I have webpass/google fiber in my condo. I added a switch to connect the webpass connection to two of the wired jacks in my walls. I connect my wireless router to one jack and an Apple TV to another. Unfortunately, I can no longer see the Apple TV from devices connected to my router, specifically my homepods.

Is there a way to connect my Apple TV to my local network in this configuration? Could I do it with other equipment?

Identify and block ports of devices that "call home"

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 09:08 PM PST

    Hi,

As a noob, I was wondering if there is a way to find what ports devices on the network use to "call home" or leave the home network? Want to see if these ports can be blocked through pi-hole that I'm running on my network.

Is there a "better" way to block this type of traffic, as much as possible?

Thank you in advance for your inputs.

Trying to decide on which route to take in upgrades

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 05:03 PM PST

Currently running meh ISP provided modem/router combo, which they do not allow me to change much other than SSID/PSK. I want to future proof my network, as well as bump up my security. Looking for WPA3, AES, 802.11ax/w, VLAN, statistics, possibly IDS/IPS. I have my eyes on a cisco 9105axw, but I'm not sure if i'd have to hook that to a router and then hit a modem? Alternatively, I could implement the layer 3 traffic security at that router via pfsense? Or even totally skip that and buy another combo like a Netgear CBR750 and try to bridge it to a pfsense box then back into the combo somehow?

I have some old gear that could be serviceable: m3-se-svr3a-cf1 (i7 16gb ram vm server), m3-se-rtr2a (cisco 5915 ESR router), and a m3-se-sw8-cf1 (fe8+g2 switch). I'd have to fix this stuff, but how would I minimize the amount of boxes employed, keep speed and implement security either via pfsense or router/combo feature modules?

Any and all suggestions welcome, feel free to dump as little or as much information on me as you'd like. I'm still a little new to cyber security and there's alot to learn.

Already receiving internet in new house - haven't set it up?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 08:00 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I've moved into a new house and have bought a new router and have signed up for an internet provider (MATE Internet) but they haven't connected our connection yet. After setting up the router though, I am already able to access the internet.

I've done a speedtest and I am getting roughly 50Mbps on the Belong network - a network I have not signed up for. The previous renters seemingly were connected to Belong as they had left their Belong branded router here but I disconnected that and plugged in my one.

I guess I had assumed they had disconnected the service as why wouldn't you. However, I am definitely connected to the internet. I should be unable to access any websites or do anything online until my provider has confirmed I am connected right?

Help me out here please! Thank you.

My PC is unable to log in to my router and NAS

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 03:56 PM PST

I am having trouble finding connecting to my NAS from my PC. I think it may be due to settings in either the router or my PC since I am unable to log in to my router through this PC.

I have a diagram of my network here.

    https://imgur.com/a/5zunzYG

    More info:

-The modem is a Motorola brand.

-The router is an TP-Link Archer A7

-The switches are Netgear unmanaged switches.

    -The APs are Ubiquiti APs

-There are other devices not shown like other PCs but, they did not seem relevant for the graphic.

    Observations:

-My PC is unable to log into the router or the NAS.

-The PC does show up as a wired connection on the router

-When my laptop is on wi-fi, connected to the router, to either of the switches and the ethernet cord connected to my pc, it can detect the NAS and router.

-I tried to detect the NAS with the firewall turned off for my PC and my PC is unable to.

-Ping test seems to time out only for my PC

    Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: I found the problem. It seems NordVPN has an option to make my computer invisible on LAN regardless of whether the program is running or not.

Affordable home mesh router suggestions for my mom

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 07:29 PM PST

Need help, bros. I'm actually gonna put up a mesh network for my mom's house because she complains how the internet doesnt reach certain parts of the house and how she has to keep reconnecting to diff. networks when moving to different parts.

So i was looking at the xiaomi ax1800 as it is affordable (converted to usd about 55 bucks) and has decent reviews. Was planning to buy 2 pcs (1 per floor). So i come from a 3rd world country so tech here is expensive, and i'm kinda low on cash right now so kinda looking for something decently priced.

My considerations: -price(mainly); -don't really need it to go insanse speeds because internet speed in my country isnt really fast (we only run 80-100mbps average at home); -moms house, while not big, is wide; and has lots of walls so our current routers having problem penetrating; -if possible, future proofing, as they say ax is newer tech

    Thanks!

    Best extender compatible with Nighthawk?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 03:13 PM PST

First off, I'm not very wifi savvy. Our old router seemed to be overloaded, so I just bought a Netgear Nighthawk AC3200. It has helped with the rest of the house, but my house is very stupidly set up with limited places to put it, and has thick plaster walls and doors all over. One of the main places we need wifi is in the garage, and it just is not reliable out there, so I was considering getting a wifi repeater to give it a little push. We had an extender 2 routers ago when we had a Belkin, but when we bought a Netgear it wasn't compatible, so I am assuming it will not be compatible with this one either. Can someone recommend one that works well? I googled it and it said something about a triband mesh extender but it wasn't specific enough for me to know what the heck to look for on Amazon..

Wifi 6 mesh System vs Wifi 5 tri band system for gaming

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 06:56 PM PST

My router is located on the second floor of the house while my room is upstairs so running an ethernet is unfeasible. I was wondering if anybody has knowledge on whether or not a mesh wifi 6 or tri band mesh wifi system would be better for gaming. I would have one pod connected to the router and the other connected to my pc by Ethernet. Thanks in advance for any help.

Google Mesh (1 Gen) High Ping

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 06:20 PM PST

I purchased a 3 pack the other day however I noticed that when running a ping test, I'm running consistently around 180ms. For gaming this is less than ideal. I have a desktop pc hardwired into a second point.

The points are no more than 10 feet away/2 walls from each other in a small house so distance shouldn't be an issue. I'm getting around 130mb speeds with a normal hardwire speed of 150mb so I'm confident that distance isn't the issue.

I've seen several posts about this issue but I'm not really finding solutions. Any recommendations?

    Detect Remote Desktop Via Router

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 06:11 PM PST

    Hi,

My workplace uses some software to monitor work from home employees, and I would like to detect when this is happening.

What is a good router/software to run on the router that is fairly noob-friendly that can detect this?

I was taking a look at pfsense, would this let me detect that sort of thing? What would be a cost efficient but effective router to run it on if it is?

Internet at my Uni flat sucks... What do I do?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 02:19 PM PST

The internet speeds available in my flat are abyssmal, 11mbps down and <1mbps up from every provider. We cancelled our internet and instead are using a 4g sim in a router. Even with QoS my ping to league of legends is really bad (60ms but constantly spiking to 100+) so it's pretty much unplayable. It's really unfortunate since I think they do fibre to the buildings next to us but my flat can only get slow speeds. Is there anything I can do to get decent ping to league. Wish I could move out but I'm contracted to the rest of the year in this flat.
