Can any daily users recommend a gaming mouse that will last longer than a year?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 12:33 PM PDT

I have been gaming a long time (20+ years) and am finally fed up with brand name mice breaking after a year... They used to last a helluva lot longer, even the cheaper ones.

I have been through too many brands and models at this point, and it seems like within 3 months on either side of the 1 year mark, they break. Most common issue is double clicking on right-click, left-click or middle mouse button (even if there are multiple). Another common issue is mouse scroll jumping in the opposite direction. Once I get fed up I take them apart to clean and troubleshoot but 85% of the time they are just done... I have also tried as much software trouble shooting as I can and I know most companies warranty process at this point :S

My latest defects are 2 Roccat Kain Aimo 120's. One is mine, which has a double clicking issue on the middle mouse button. The other is my wife's, which has the mouse scroll jumping in the opposite direction. Both are 11 months old. I usually buy 2 at time, one for her and one for me, and it's rare for one to really outlast the other, seems regardless of usage. I have reinstalled both Roccat and Windows drivers, changed computers and the issues remain...

So please, recommend me something that doesn't have more than ~7 buttons, intrusive software and will last longer than a year :)

ps - I do not slam my mouse when I get mad at games ;)

EDIT: A few things I've noticed so far in the comments:

    • Conflicting reviews on new-gen Logitech products (silicon lottery meets good warranty; quality issues in mass production) / G502 is popular af
    • Razer products have gotten better, but Synapse still sucks (some models have on board mem. to avoid this)
    • Red Dragon, while cheap in price, have lasted users a long time
    • Corsair Harpoon seems to have a lot of fans!
    • not a lot of chatter about lesser known companies like Zowie (i consider them big), Mionix, etc.
    • Optical switches = new hotness?
    • Look into soldering or no-solder switches as an alternative

How much RAM should your PC/Windows be taking up without any programs running?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 11:46 PM PDT

Hi everyone. I was just curious to how much RAM windows or your PC hardware needs for example: to boot up fast, to function properly and fast. Recently i closed all my games but left Steam running in my background. I opened task manager and went to memory tab. It shows 2.9GB "in use (compressed)" and rhat i have 4.9GB "avaliable", with 147MB "hardware reserved". Total it adds up to about 7.9GB that i paid for (1× 8GB RAM Stick). However, with Steam closed, but running in the background, and nothing else apart from necessary windows processes and apps, i was wondering if 2.9GB of RAM "in use" in this situation is normal or not. Also, in my screenshot, it says that 2.8GB is RAM is cached, i know that cached RAM is used by windows and windows can give some of those cached RAM to your games or apps IF YOU NEED THEM. So having some cached RAM is normal. However as you can see i have 2.9GB "in use" so does that mean 2.8GB out of my 2.9GB "in use" is cached RAM? Thanks. Screenshot of my task manager is here:

    Upgrading from 2600 to 5600x?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 04:32 AM PDT

FIRST its important to mention that im not trying to squeeze every frame out of my pc for every cent I have. im a low-key casual gamer.

i have the 6600xt and a 2600 and I want a new cpu. im thinking of getting a 5600x. would that be good?
mentioning again, im not looking to be squeezing every cent out of my pc, I just want a good cpu. would the 5600x be an decent enough upgrade in fps for me to upgrade?

I can move $100 up if there is a better one out there.

Mixing 8x2 ram with 16x2 ram?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 11:13 AM PDT

So long story short, i acquired someone's gaming pc for parts and in it is 2x16gb ram sticks. My build currently only has 2x8gb, my question is will there being any issue running two different sized pairs if i add the 16gb pair to my build? Or am I better off selling the 2x16 for another 2x8 or vice versa.

Asking the community again because I can't afford a PC failure right now

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 02:52 PM PDT

I posted previously with an issue I had with waking my computer out of sleep. This is my first build, I am quite proud of it (1 year) however I'm not sure if it's the tower itself that requires you to press the actual power button to get out of sleep. Regardless, I have had issues as of late getting the computer out of sleep. Either I press it and nothing happens, or as of yesterday I press it and I can hear the fans and everything else turn on, but nothing happens. My computer and mouse are perfectly functional as is my monitor. If anyone can offer any insight I would very much appreciate it.

Do I need to reinstall games after upgrading GPU?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 01:08 PM PDT

Apologies in advance if this might seem like a stupid question.

I plan on upgrading from RTX 20 series to the 30 series. I'm aware I have to clean uninstall old GPU drivers before swapping out cards. However, I want to try some AAA games I have in my Steam and Epic library to compare the benchmarks of the 2 cards. Does it matter whether or not I keep my games installed on my drive during the upgrade, or do I need to reinstall the games after I install the new GPU + drivers?

Corsair RM750x psu making crackle or rattle noise under load

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 12:12 PM PDT

Hi all. Here is my build:

Ryzen 3700x, MSI RTX 3060ti, ASRock B550 Velocita, Corsair RM750x. Noctua cooler, fractal case, samsung m.2 drive. All new parts. No overclocking.

I was doing some cpu and gpu stress testing (Cinebench and Furmark) and monitoring the 12v rail while under load with HWinfo, because destiny 2 has been crashing my pc and I read that could be a cause. The psu seems to be supplying adequate power across all the rails, but during my gpu stress test, the psu is making this noise:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/p0k60xy6i3vmv40/Rattle%20noise%20during%20GPU%20stress%20test.m4a?dl=0
I'm 90% sure the noise is coming from the psu, but it's hard to isolate with the 7 fans in my rig between the case, gpu, and cpu. Is this a fan rubbing or rattle? Or is this an arcing/crackly noise? Only happens when under load. It's really unsettling with it being a new psu, and overkill for these components. Would you guys RMA this psu? What other tests would you do? Any input is appreciated. I looked through old but similar threads and found others with similar problems, but no solid answers.

    What's a good drive for long-term storage?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 04:20 PM PDT

I am looking for a drive that is large enough to hold many files (around 2 - 5 TB) that will also last a long time (around 5 - 10 years). Now I know SSD's are better for that, but they are also more expensive.

I don't care about speed at all. This particular drive will be a secondary drive for just keeping files and letting me access them whenever I want to. I want to have as much storage as I can for $150 at most.

I was originally planning to go for this Barracuda Hard Drive, but after hearing how unreliable hard drives are at storing files safely for a long time, I'm starting to rethink this. Is there any drive that is better or is this Barracuda hard drive just as fine?

Again, I don't care about speed, I care about how long the drive will last. I don't want my drives randomly dying after I've put way too many important documents in there.

    Thank you in advance.

What processor to go with RIGHT NOW??

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 04:08 PM PDT

So let me start by saying I cant really wait until zen 4 comes out. Im building a whole new rig and passing mine down to the my oldest. I just acquired a 3080 ti and I play games like
Rust, Valorant, Overwatch, Rocket League, Company of Heroes, B4B, etc. I dont stream, I dont edit, I just play games and surf.

Im really torn by the lack of an abundance of data with the new Alder Lake. My brain is telling me to just get a 5900x and upgrade to zen 4 next year this time. But then there are rumors of the 13th gen this January...Ive seen some preliminary testing with the 12900k that seems ok and right in-between 5900x and 5950x both in performance and pricing.

Im not tied down to a budget. Please talk some sense into me.

    Mobo crashes?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 03:28 PM PDT

I recently bought all the components to build a PC from Newegg. I chose the Asus ROG strix B450-f gaming II motherboard. Everything worked great for 2 days, then when it went to turn the PC on, on the third day, the fans came on, but that's it. Diagnostic lights didn't come on, nothing booted to the point where I couldn't get into bios because no video signal was going to the monitor through the HDMI cord.

Is this common, or did I just have shitty luck? Newegg is replacing the motherboard, I'm just wondering if I wasted my money

Would AMD Ryzen 7 5700G 8-Core work well in Unreal Engine 5?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 02:51 PM PDT

The CPU comes with integrated Radeon Graphics. I can't purchase a dedicated GPU because the price is too high so I want to use this CPU with integrated graphics for now until the prices become reasonable. How far can I go with this CPU on Unreal Engine 5?

Are Intel Xeon CPUs a good choice ?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 02:47 PM PDT

My current build is an i5 4670k, MSI Z87 G43 gaming motherboard and 16gb of RAM. (I only list those parts because that's what I'm looking to upgrade)

I have this since 2013 and of course it has started to show his age.

Long story short, I want to hop in on all the "new stuff" that has become the standard over the years: DDR4 RAM, USB-C ports and M.2 SSDs. I also want to get a CPU with more cores as I do a lot of gaming while watching/listening something and work with AutoCAD and Revit.

My first plan was to save and get something like a Ryzen 3600 but then I found some Xeon kits on AliExpress that really caught my attention.
Apparently, CPUs like the 2650 v3 are already better than what I have and a full kit (CPU, ram and mb) costs around the same as just the 3600 in my country.

Would this be a good upgrade ? I have 0 experience with Xeon builds and just starting reading about them a few days ago.

    Current build, opinions?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 02:46 PM PDT

This my current built back in 2016/17, primarily for gaming (Battlefield, PUBG)

Thinking of upgrading two items for the new Battlefield 2042 coming out next week:

    1. Video card, thinking of going to a RTX 3800 Ti for 4K gaming.
    2. Monitor, most likely going to an ASUS ROG Swift PG43UQ 43" 4K

ps. the PSU was an overkill but I got too good of a deal to pass it up.

    Any opinions? Other upgrades?

Need help with my first build

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 02:45 PM PDT

Hi, I'm building my first Asus pc and need some advice regarding some parts:

    Case AIO RAM

This is the current build i7-11700k TUF z490 plus with wifi T Force Delta RGB 2x16GB 3600Mhz TUF RTX 3070 OC LHR XPG ASX8200 512GB NVME M.2 Pro Seagate 2x1TB Barracuda 7200 RPM TUF 750B 750W 80+ Bronze TUF GT301 case TUF LC 240

    1. Is GT501 not compatible with the current specs?
    2. Is the RAM enough?
    3. I was informed by the shop that if I want to have GT501 as my case, I would need to change my AIO. Is that true?

Also, do you guys have any recommendation for a PSU with the best value or is the TUF enough?

Thank you so much in advance!

Looking to build a PC and I have multiple questions mostly to do with my cooling.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 02:42 PM PDT

Okay so I've seen word online that there are negatives to going with an aio and an air cooling unit. the main ones are that AIOs have more places to go wrong IE, leaks, pump failures etc. and that air coolers have issues with touching the ram, bending the motherboard and blocking airflow. basically what I'm asking is to be told what the best option for me is, I will be using a Ryzen 9 5900x, an asus ROG Strix 570x-E gaming atx mobo, an asus radeon 6900xt and was planning on a corsair 4000d airflow case. my main concerns are with the pump failures, touching the ram and the mobo bending. I am not planning on taking my pc on long journeys or even really moving it at all other than the natural times like shifting furniture or diy etc.
