Is it worth buying an ssd just for the OS?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 09:17 PM PDT

I'm planning on buying a 1tb HDD along with a 120gb SSD just for the OS. What I want to know is, is it worth buying an ssd just for the OS?

Does it just make the PC boot up faster or are there any other benefits I don't know about?

    Am I being scammed?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 12:27 PM PDT

My friend recommended i look on Craigslist for Gaming PC listings as they tend to be cheaper builds than buying and building or ordering prebuilts. I'm looking to upgrade from my Nitro Asus laptop rn with a GTX 1050, 8gb of ram, i5 Intel processor. I saw a great deal on Craigslist, but worried about being scammed. Here is there message when I asked for more info on the pc:

Hello, The Gaming PC is still available for sale and it's in excellent condition. The Gaming PC has Operating System: Windows 10 Pro, Release Year: 2020, Motherboard Model: ASUS ROG MAXIMUS XI CODE, Storage Type: HDD + SSD. Graphics Processing Type: Dedicated Graphics ,RAM Size: 32 GB, Connectivity :HDMI, USB 3.0, USB 3.1, USB-C. Brand: Custom PC, Type: Desktop, Processor: Intel Core i9 10th Gen. Processor Speed:5.3 GHz, Maximum RAM Capacity:128 GB ,Hard Drive Capacity:500 GB,SSD Capacity:500 GB ,GPU:NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090. I'm selling it because I don't want to miss a great Macbook deal offer for my new job. So, I decided to sell it for $700 since this is an Urgent Sale.

It will be better if you are located in Tallula, IL. So, we can meet and complete the deal. But If you are located in another state or city then we can use ebay. I prefer ebay because I used it for the last 10 years and it is very secure for both sellers and buyers. And the main thing is you will get the full refund and return policy from ebay.

If you are interested then we can meet at any place. Or if you like ebay then I can post it on ebay and send you the link. Just email me with your full delivery address and phone number. I need to verify your shipping area. (Please note: All locations are not for free shipping and I am looking for a free shipping area).

    Is this legit?

EDIT: He made an eBay listing and has a 99.7% satisfaction on an account made in 2009. I should also note he is in Illinois and I'm from Washington, so no way to personally verify.

EDIT: definitely a scam lmao. Thank you! I'm very new to the pc building scene!

Used CPU fell out of my motherboard

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 08:49 AM PDT

So I bought an used 5800x to replace my 2700x. I switched them up and did the proper steps to install it. But when I turned my case back up, my cpu fell out of my motherboard.

I was confused about how this could happen so I put my 2700x back in, but with the 2700x there was no problem.

Does anyone now how this could happen. Cpu pins were not bend before putting it in, I checked it thoroughly. And I did the same steps for both

    My motheboard is prime b450m-k.

Does RGB ram glow when you plug it in without configuring first?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 07:55 AM PDT

So im planning on getting the Ballistix 3200mhz 8gbX2 kit. For some reason, the non-rgb version is harder to find and even slightly more expensive when i found it than the RGB one lol. I dont want the RGB to glow, is it possible to have it not glow after configuring it with the software then uninstalling the software? Im not a huge fan of letting background apps run

Should I upgrade CPU amd RAM or get a full haul update??

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 06:55 AM PDT

First things first, my specs are:

    • i5 3470s
    • Arctic Freezer 12 LP (or something along those lines)
    • 2x4GB DDR3 1600mHz RAM
    • RX 460 OC 4GB
    • 1TB HDD
    • 320GB SSD

Now, I can upgrade my CPU to a used i7 3770 for £60 and get 2x 8GB sticks of DDR3 1600mHz for an additional £36.

On the other hand, should I get a Ryzen 5 3600 (the R5 5600 is too much), mbrd, and 16GB RAM? The R5 3600 is currently out of stock, but it sells used for £170, i need an itx mbrd. I've been out of date for the past year and a half with releases, so I'd need recommendations. 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz RAM goes for £65. That would possibly total to ~£300 incl. mbrd

    144hz or 1440p?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 06:34 AM PDT

I want to buy a new monitor in black Friday but I don't know what should I choose, should I go 144hz monitor or 1440p monitor? 144hz monitors are cheaper and price is a factor. I know I can buy both but I don't know if my pc would be able to render at 1440p 144hz. I have Rx 6600 xt and Ryzen 5 3600 and the games I play the most is pubg, cs go and Minecraft. If you have any recommendations for monitors please let me know.

I added bumpers to the tempered glass on my Fractal Meshify C, not to prevent shattering but to fit a CPU fan.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 03:31 PM PDT

    Final Result

So in September 2020 I was very excited to build my first PC, but to be honest I picked parts a bit haphazardly. This resulted in the Noctua NH-D15 fan not fitting well with the RAM sticks that I chose in the Fractal Meshify C case.

Instead of doing the smart thing, like swapping RAM sticks or maybe changing the cooler, or maybe changing the fan size, or literally anything else I just went and raised the fan a few notches on the cooler to take the fan off the RAM.

This left a nice little gap between the fan and the RAM : Angle 1 , Angle 2 (not great pics but you get the idea)

Because the fan was raised, I couldn't properly close the case. So in my infinite wisdom, I went ahead and put the bottom screws of the glass panel and left the top screws very loose in the thread. This gave a little space between the fan and the panel, but left a nice big gap at the top of the panel.

    (Accident waiting to happen)

Fast forward to now, I finally decided to do something about it after seeing how much dust accumulated in my case. After doing my own research, I came up with a bright idea. I bought a bunch of parts from Amazon, both to raise the tempered glass all around and then close the gap around the case.

    Parts

I used some calipers to measure the thickness of the tempered glass panel, which was about 4mm so I found the perfect rubber edge trim to place around the edge of the panel. I did some googling around and found that the screws for the Meshify C panel are M4x5mm so I went and bought some M4x10mm screws as well as some rubber washer. This gives more space for the panel away from the fan and it can rest on the rubber washers on the longer screw.

I removed the glass panel, luckily without shattering it. I placed the rubber trim on one of the sides and cut it with scissors. The rubber trim was the perfect fit and holds well on the tempered glass. I went and did all four sides, and I think it came out pretty okay. I probably could have tried harder, cutting 45 degree angles so the corners were flush but I think this does the job.

The panel went back on with ease, with plenty of room away from the CPU fan. The rubber trim filled the gaps around the edge of the tempered glass perfectly.

Closeup of the screws with rubber washers and rubber trim.

Even though the glass panel is raised higher now, it's not loose since the screws, rubber washer and rubber trim keep it in place well enough.

    Final Result Again

PC Build for reference : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8Bkpy4

    Amazon parts :

TLDR : I solved a simple problem with a series of convoluted solutions, but now I can drop my tempered glass panel on tile flooring.

What do you think is the absolute bare minimum RAM when building a gaming PC?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 01:23 AM PDT

Hello everyone! My main question is, how much RAM does a gaming PC really need in 2021, especially on a limited budget? I'm looking towards building my first PC on a budget of around 700AU$, and with the prices of other vital components (mainly GPUs) growing, I'd like to find the cheapest memory kit that would still run new games.

I've only played games on the PS4 for several years now, as my laptop isn't capable of running anything other than older games (pre-2013) and some indies. My "rig" is an ASUS Zenbook with an integrated GPU (Intel HD Graphics 520, lol). Still, it has a RAM of 12GB and works on a 256GB SSD, so it's always been reliable for work, fast, except almost impossible to play on.

That's why I need advice on what is considered the minimum RAM for a gaming PC. The 12GB RAM clearly didn't compensate for the lack of a real GPU; thus, I would love to save up on a memory kit. Is 8 GB enough to run today's generation of games without issue? From what I've read and heard from others, while a bunch of newer releases claim a minimum or recommended RAM of 16GB for them to run smoothly, 8GB is usually enough.

On the other hand, as a new generation of gaming consoles began just under a year ago, a 16GB memory kit could be a worthy investment for a future-proof gaming PC. I've looked for the best RAM prices here in Australia, specifically at the PNY XLR8, and the range of AU$112-158 doesn't look so bad. Still, the difference between 2666MHz and 3600MHz eludes me in terms of gaming performance, and I'm not sure the AU$48 difference between the two is worth it.

Could you guys tell me the difference between 8GB and 16GB RAMs for a gaming PC? Are higher frequency RAMs really that much faster and worthy of a larger investment? Thanks in advance for the replies!

TL;DR: What do you consider the minimum amount of RAM for a budget gaming PC in 2021?

Why do people hate Intel so much?

I just don't understand can someone explain to me please.

Even on this video it shows that i7-10700k is better like 10-20 fps... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Uc1o8jj1p4

Need a new graphics card that can support dual 4k monitors at 144hz

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 01:00 PM PDT

As the title says i have dual 4k monitors that support 144hz and i currently have a 3070 (bought a while ago before the monitors) and now running any game at 4k with any decent framerate causes the GPU to go nuts and that's not running the second screen.

    I can get a 3080 for $2300 or a 3090 for $3800 AUD.

I was just looking for some support as to if i should bother going for the 3090 or if a 3080 will do the trick?

then i could sell my 3070 to recoup some of the cost

    Thanks

Need to add RAM to an old PC I built years ago - board uses DDR3 & DDR4?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 03:20 PM PDT

So my pc is 8 years old, I don't need a new one- don't care for one. I don't game anymore so specs aren't important. But, speed is still necessary. I don't think I need an upgraded CPU, I believe my problem is RAM. Right now, after a fresh reboot and having Discord & Chrome (the most usage of RAM) its at 4.9/7.9 62% with CPU being around 40-60% depending what's going on. I had to restart because my RAM was at 99% usage, with just Discord & Chrome running (5-7 tabs at any time) so over time the the usage increases and slows everything down.

    Motherboard; Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0
    Processor; Processor AMD FX(tm)-6100 Six-Core Processor, 3300 Mhz, 3 Core(s), 6 Logical Processor(s)

    For the motherboard, I read here that;

It uses the DDR3 memory type, with maximum speeds of up to 2133 MHz, and 4 DDR3 slots allowing for a maximum total of 32 GB RAM.

So what kind of RAM can I add? DDR3 or DDR4? And any recommendations on RAM, or should I just add the same ones I currently have?

Will the noNoctua NH-D15 fit in my case?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 07:16 AM PDT

Upgrading my cpu cooler from stock and I was thinking about getting the Noctua NH-D15. The only issue I have is that the cooler might not fit in my case.

My case is the corsair corsair 275r airflow with a 170mm cpu tower clearance.

On noctuas product page the Noctua NH-D15 is 165mm with the fans installed

If i get the cpu cooler will it fit in my case? If it doesn't will the Noctua NH-U12S be a good substitute?

My cpu is ryzen 9 3900x

Need help finishing my first build

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 02:37 PM PDT

So, I've recently assembled by first pc

    https://nl.pcpartpicker.com/list/fvyWW3

And after some trouble shooting which mostly consisted of taking everything apart and putting it together again, I think I've almost got it working. The rgb is lit, the fans are spinning and and the gpu is lit up. But it's not putting out a signal, I tried the same hdmi cable on my laptop and that's working fine so it has to be the pc. I'm kind of afraid I mighy have handeled the mobo too roughly and broken it, I did make some slight slips with the screwdriver and removed the original cpu fan rather unhandy. Is that likely to be it? or are there other explainations.

A summary of what I have set up so far.

My motherboard screwed into the stand off things that are in the case. Emitting some rgb from behind I think

Ram installed in slot 2 and 4, they're rgb and they're lit up

    Cpu in its slot

Cpu cooler on top and plugged in for power

Gpu plugged into a pcie slot, I don't think it matters which

Storage plugged into a slot that said m.2

    Case fans plugged in

    Cpu cable plugged near cpu

    Pcie cable plugged in gpu

    24 pin plugged in motherboard

    Audio cable thing plugged in

Led+ and minus as well as power and reset plugged in

Usb 3 plugged in the side

Usb 3.1 type c not plugged I don't think it has a port for it,

24 pin is plugged into the left of psu split in two

Cpu is plugged into "atx 12v"

Pcie is plugged next to it in pcie

It's Almost 2022, How Do I Go About Building A PC?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 03:52 PM PDT

Yes, this will be my first ever PC, my initial thought is to buy some parts and wait for the price to come down on other certain parts.

Most of the posts I read are +1 year old, so things are sure different now with the shortage/prices/new products etc.

What are your tips about building a PC nowadays, should I wait until Intel releases its new GPU? AMD, Nvidia? Or can I already start buying certain parts without worrying about compatibility (Storage, PSU, Case..).

I apologize if Im not getting things right since I'm like most plebs out there, still very new to building a pc.

*I intend to build a PC that can handle gaming at high-ultra settings, while also capable of running video editing software just fine. Let me know if you have any parts suggestions that are already available.

    Thank you very much!

    Home server with consumer parts

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 03:46 PM PDT

    Hey all;

I'm building a home server, purpose of which will be NAS (Most likely TrueNAS Scale) and Kubernetes (Which will host both home automation as well as personal mirror for code & staging area for personal projects). I'm not expecting a lot of usage overall, though I still want to be snappy - I'm valuing multithreading over raw power. I'm still debating if I want cheap GPU for possible media encoding, or will I use KVM for now.

    Current parts list:

    Purpose Part Comment
Chassis Cooler Master Force 500 (FOR-500-KKN1) Main reason: Cheap as hell, 6 bays for 3.5
    Motherboard MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK
Storage (Long-term) Western Digital Ultrastar HDD DC HC550 16TB 3,5 (0F38462) 4x, targeting double parity - to be later expanded to 6x
    Storage (Boot) Samsung 980 500GB M.2 (MZ-V8V500BW) Boot + cache
Power supply unit CORSAIR CX SERIES 750W ATX, MODULAR, 80 (CP-9020061-EU) A bit of an overkill, though I feel safer with a power budget to spare
CPU AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3,7GHz BOX (100-100000065BOX) Stock cooler should do well
RAM Kingston Fury Beast 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3600MHz CL18 DIMM (KF436C18BBAK232) 32GB for now, to be later expanded to 64

    E: Forgot about RAM...

    Need mobo+CPU recommendations

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 03:14 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am looking for a CPU/Motherboard recommendation for a build we are doing. The motherboard must support 128GB+ of RAM and 4x RTX 3080s (ie PCIe lanes and PCIe 4.0). Additionally, the CPU must have at least six cores, though I'm assuming that won't be an issue because it sounds like I'm looking at either a Xeon or Threadripper. (This is not a mining build, which is hopefully apparent by the requirement for a motherboard that supports lots of RAM).

We're building this ourselves instead of buying a traditional system due to budget (seems like we're looking at $5,000 for a basic SuperMicro system without GPUs) so we're hoping to stay around or under $1,000 for the CPU/motherboard. We can go higher if needed, but that's the ideal number.

I don't know much about Xeon/Threadrippers and related motherboards, so any specific recommendations are appreciated.

Are there any disadvantages to shutting down a computer after each use and rebooting it?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 02:53 PM PDT

I know this sounds INCREDIBLY stupid on first read, but I built my PC 3 months ago and it is my baby and I want what's best for it. I've seen a lot of people on this sub say they rarely shut down their computer, but my lights keep me awake at night and I shut mine down after each use. Is there any chance this could lead to slower start up speeds over time, or maybe lead to the degradation of any parts at a quicker speed? And yes, although I built a PC I am still relatively tech-dumb. Pls no flame
