Linux administration using windows is stupid... Help listing reasons this is stupid needed please. Posted: 02 Nov 2021 01:59 AM PDT Hi all, Firstly... please accept my apologies if this is the wrong forum. This is probably not a n00b question but think the discussion around this might help new Linux Sysadmins I am faced with an issue that I need help with. I have been a Linux Sysadmin for various companies for more than 2 decades. In my current role I'm faced with the following: The company I work for has decided that everybody must move to Windows 10 desktops. Their reason is stated as they are unable to apply AD policies to my Linux desktop. I really like the team I work with and we are doing awesome work and am happy and content with my role and the work that I do here.... but maybe the answer is to move on although I don't really want to. I appreciate some input and guidance and thank all in advance for their input. [link] [comments] |

Manjaro's (or now W11's?) terminal on other distros Posted: 02 Nov 2021 09:25 AM PDT Hi! Previously I used Manjaro around 1-2 months ago and the terminal had a special style that looked like this picture. Now I'm using EndeavourOS and the terminal just looks bland and boring for me. How do I recreate or install such style? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Nov 2021 08:45 AM PDT Hi. So I installed Pop_OS 21.04 yesterday (fresh install from manjaro KDA) and have a very long boot time for some reason (like 1.5 minutes). My specs are i5 6600k, gtx 1080, 1tb hdd (sda1) 1tb ssd (sdc1 /home) 250gb ssd (10gb sdb1 /boot, 240gb sdb2 /root) result of systemd-analyze: systemd-analyze blame: dmesg: Seems like nvidia drivers and sda1 drive are causing trouble, right? Any idea how to deal with that? Thank you alot in advance! [link] [comments] |
Does my Intel have propietary drivers? Posted: 02 Nov 2021 09:18 AM PDT I'm following a tutorial for installing manjaro (dual boot with windows 10). At the boot page, they guy says that, if our hardware has propietary software, I should activate the non free drivers in order for a proper boot. My processor is an Intel Celeron N4000. Shall I choose free or non free? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Nov 2021 12:38 PM PDT I have a 6600xt, 5800x, B550 board ND 64 gb ram. I want to host a windows vm using that gpu so my question is what is a good and cheap video card that can be used on the host machine while using the 6600 as the pass through gpu to the windows vm to be able to play games. Also what would be the best OS to achieve this? I've read about unraid but ideally want to do it with FOSS tools. Can this be done using qemu and virt-manager? [link] [comments] |

Importing pictures from camera Posted: 02 Nov 2021 08:26 AM PDT HY, does Linux (Mint) have a program that imports pictures from camera, like Windows has where you just right click camera and set parameters that renames imported pictures (you can set it to rename to eg. date taken + folder name, Name, date taken range, etc...). Thank you for suggestions! [link] [comments] |

Is it possible to set a shortcut key to increase volume of a particular application? Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:28 AM PDT I want to set the shortcut key Ctrl + Up/Down to increase/decrease volume of Spotify in my laptop, since the latest Spotify update removed it for Linux for some dumb reason. I have this extension but having a keyboard shortcut would be so much easier. I'm using Pop!_OS 21.04 (Cosmic). [link] [comments] |

Tablet Question and Distro support Posted: 02 Nov 2021 09:54 AM PDT Is there any tablets I can run fully fledged Linux on like Endeavour or Fedora? It's become complicated, Please help me! Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:44 AM PDT A few days back, I booted my Laptop into Linux mint. Due to some constraints of not having my windows apps. I tried using the Wine app for the windows app but it is very tough to use for some of the apps. So I tried to switch it back to windows. I never knew it would become a pain in the SSA. I tried to make a windows bootable pen drive on Linux. But it is a very tough nut. Finally, I tried to make it into a bootable pen drive using a tool called Ventoy with some suggestions from Reddit. I copied different OS into my 32GB pen drive and tried to install it including Linux Mint. Except for Linux Operating systems, All the Windows OS are not working. When it shows a blink _ symbol on a black screen. I tried to put it all night. Except for that blinking _ symbol with a black screen on the top left corner, it is not directed to the next step. Tried with genuine windows 7 OS from the official website even with that... I'm facing the same issue. Boot file from USB not loading. But the bootable Linux files are loading with ease. It's been 3 days... Many of the methods on the internet are for systems which having windows OS. But for my Linux system, there are very few resources to lean on. Even with that, facing several issues while using the terminal as I'm a noob to Linux. Please help me with that. My device specifications are: Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M330 @2.13 GHz 2.13 GHz Ram: 8 GB [link] [comments] |
"The installer encountered an unrecoverable error" Posted: 02 Nov 2021 09:15 AM PDT Hi, I'm trying to install Ubuntu 20.04 on an Asus having an SSD (1To) as the only hard disk and I ran into a bunch of issues. When I thought that the installation ended I got this error message displayed: "We're sorry, the installer crashed. After you close this window, we'll allow you to file a bug report using the integrated bug reporting tool. This will gather the information about your system and your installation process. The details will be sent to our bug tracker and a developer will attend to the problem as soon as possible." The error message window had the title: "Installer crashed" Then another error message got displayed: "The system log from your installation contains an error. The specific error commonly occurs when there is an issue with the disk to which you are trying to install Ubuntu. It is recommended that you back up important data on your disk and investigate the situation. Measures you might take include checking cable connections for your disk and using software tools to investigate the health of your hardware." The error message window had no title. The last error message was: "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again." The error was under the title "Installation failed." About the computer: Name: Zenbook Edition 30 UX334 Constructor: Asus Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-8565U Processor 1.8 GHz (8M Cache, up to 4.6 GHz, 4 cores) Graphics: Intel® UHD Graphics 620, NVIDIA® GeForce® MX250, 2GB GDDR5 Storage: 1TB M.2 NVMe™ PCIe® 3.0 Performance SSD Memory: 16GB LPDDR3 on board, Memory Max Up to:16GB I bought it about 2 years ago and it came with Windows 10, after 5-6 months it started crashing (blue window out of the blue...) and rebooting continuously. Since I had the warranty available I took it to an Azure store and they fixed it. On the "bill" it was written that they replaced the hard disk. And it worked well again. After roughly a year or so it had the same issue again. I thought it was because an update of Windows 10 because when I restored to a previous version it started to work well again, but the same issue happened (blue window, rebooting endlessly). That's why I tried to switch to Ubuntu. I'd like to ask you what I can do to try figuring out what's happening with this laptop and how to fix it. The second error message suggested to check disk cable connections but I have no idea how to do it and I'm afraid I'd mess it up if I follow some random youtube tutorial so I'd be happy if someone provided with links they trust. Also, I don't know what software I can use to figure out what's happening with the hard disk and how to "use" this software since I can install no OS on the laptop. Thank you all for any help ^^ P.S.: I don't have a way to get a live USB with the latest version of Ubuntu but I suppose the issue with my hardware and not the software. [link] [comments] |
terminology question: what is USB stick with .ISO called vs USB stick with installed OS? Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:16 AM PDT I am reading about Linux, and I keep getting confused because it seems like the term "LiveUSB" refers to two different things: (a) a USB stick with an ISO image on it, and (b) a USB stick on which an OS has been installed. Are there different names for these two things? [link] [comments] |

Does lsblk show encrypted windows drives? Posted: 02 Nov 2021 08:26 AM PDT Hey all, Recently our Surface pro 5 at work died. It refuses to boot and shows a hard drive logo in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. I decided to do some diagnosis, and after fighting with the bios for half an hour I was able to boot my PopOS live usb. I opened the terminal and ran lsblk, but it only shows device "sda," which is my bootable USB. I don't see the Surface's SSD in that menu. I ran lspci and I see a few devices that look noteworthy. There's an Intel Memory Controller, and an Intel Non-Volatile Memory Controller. However, I don't know if this means SSD storage or RAM. I'm not sure if the surface has microsoft's built-in encryption on the drive, and I don't know if lsblk would be able to find the drive if it did have it. Are there any other commands I can run to know for sure whether or not the Surface's SSD has died, or if it's just my windows installation that has died? The SSD not replaceable, and I want to be absolutely certain before I tell the boss that we need a new computer. [link] [comments] |

Linux on gaming laptop with nvidia GPU? Posted: 02 Nov 2021 06:51 AM PDT Hello, I recently decided that I want to switch over to the penguin on my gaming laptop (Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3) and wanted to ask a few questions before switching over. Specs: Ryzen 5 4600H with Radeon graphics, NVIDIA GTX 1650, 8GB ram 1) I've heard about proton being used in steam games, is it usable in non-steam games too? 2) taskmgr on windows reports 2 gpus, my GTX 1650, and my AMD Radeon (GPU 0 and GPU 1 respectively), will I be able to switch between the 2 on linux, how hard will it be if i can? 3) what distro should I choose for the laptop? I've read about people recommending openSUSE Tumbleweed and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, i was just wondering which one you guys recommend. 4) How's the nvidia driver situation (do they exist, are they ok) 5) How many resources does it use compared to windows 10 (i'm assuming less but i want to know by how much) It would be nice if i got some responses ASAP since I want to do the switch this week or so. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
