External ext4 HDD has empty folders when there were filled with files Posted: 01 Nov 2021 08:38 AM PDT I created an ext4 partition on an external HDD and transferred all files with GRsync to it. Some directories show up with data and others appear empty even though they had data before and after transfer. What can I do if anything? Thank you. OS: Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon [link] [comments] |

Is GNU Autoconf still a thing? Posted: 01 Nov 2021 01:14 PM PDT Hi guys I am reading a book calls "How Linux Work: What every superuser should know" for the purpose of learning Linux. One chapter it mentioned GNU Autoconf, I have a google, it doesn't seem to be use much anymore. Most people use Make and CMake. Am I correct that GNU Autoconf is not popular anymore? Posted: 01 Nov 2021 11:02 AM PDT Hello everyone, i am new to Ubuntu and Linux in general, I have an old but decent computer with dual graphics and I need some help with the drivers. Wherever I searched about updating my AMD graphics i found the same "sudo" commands which I wrote in the terminal and in the order they needed to be typed. All seemed to run and install in the terminal but my computer still doesn't recognise my graphics cards nor does it send signal to my second monitor. I also use Blender on Windows with those cards but in Linux it says that I don't have any OpenCL cards, meaning that it can't recognise them. Thank you in advance for the answers and if you need any further information feel free to contact me. Specs. Posted: 01 Nov 2021 01:12 PM PDT Hi, I am currently running Ubuntu and would like to swtich to a distro that comes with less stuff pre installed, I had run the minimal installation but noticed it still contained snap packages (which I definitely don't want). I tried Debian and it worked flawlessly, but all the packages were outdated (Firefox was version 70 something, current version is like 91). Is there a Debian based distro that comes with very little packages pre installed, is not a pain to install, is not on rolling release but still has decently updated packages? Alternatively, if there is a way to completely opt out of snap in the Ubuntu installation or maybe on a flavor, that would suffice, I just don't want to have to remove that stuff manually. Posted: 01 Nov 2021 06:46 AM PDT Curious about TAILS Linux and seeing the term "persistence" come up several times in my lookups. What does this term mean and what is its practical significance in case I decide to try out this distro? Thanks for any info! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Nov 2021 04:38 AM PDT i am buying new laptop but i am deciding between amd and nvidia laptops. the prices here in europe are fucking ridiculous. the amd laptops were marketed by being much cheaper then nvidia laptops but they arent... only reason i am even coinsidering amd laptop is the fact that it got better support for linux but idk. is the nvidia really that bad with linux? how does it show? will even someone like me notice it or its just pain in the ass for devs? Is Linux just incompatible with my PC? Posted: 01 Nov 2021 10:35 AM PDT I've been trying my hardest to get into Linux. Liked all the customization, really wanted to move away from my bloated Win 10, thought this would seriously be a no brainer. I'm decently tech savvy and I was certainly ready to go into learning Linux with patience and a readiness to learn and troubleshoot anything I have to. My PC is running on an AMD APU, and I've tried to install several different distros such as Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, Manjaro and Pop!_OS. All of them get the same error where they just boot to a black screen and seemingly fail to use any graphical drivers, even the open source AMD drivers they're all supposed to be working with. I got Pop!_OS working for about a week before the OS updated and I suddenly had the same problem. Tried my hardest to fix it but seemingly nothing works. I want to keep trying but at this point I'm starting to wonder, is Linux seriously this incompatible/unstable with my hardware and would it even be worth it to try and fix it? Is it possible for Linux to just not be a good choice for your PC, hardware-wise? Edit: Specs. Motherboard: ASUS PRIME B450M-A CPU: Ryzen 5 2400G with Vega 11. RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance HDD: 2TB WD Blue. (No GPU, using the Vega 11 graphics) [link] [comments] |

Is Searx search engine good to be more anonymous even on home desktop? Posted: 01 Nov 2021 12:23 PM PDT I mean, I heard that it is obsolete to use Searx on home connection. Does it worth it or should I stick to DuckDuckGo? [link] [comments] |
All day events on Gnome Calendar Posted: 01 Nov 2021 12:06 PM PDT I'm on Solus OS with Budgie and thought to try Gnome Calendar instead of Tunderbird. My calendars are on Google so I connect my account and load the calendar. Everything looks right except the reoccurring events that are all-day events. Those repeat every day of the calendar forever. Does anyone have any tips on how to get this to work correctly? Calendar version is 3.34.2. [link] [comments] |
Best Filesystem for USB Drives for Android Users Posted: 01 Nov 2021 11:35 AM PDT Hi all. First of all I would like to thanks to those who help me on my previous post, my Lexar 64GB JumpDrive is now magically alive. I was using Ubuntu 21.10, and my USB drive is able to formatted using my Android phone. My question is, what is the best filesystem to use on a USB drive if using and Android device? I only use my Android phone as my media cosumption, and the USB drives that I own is only to backup my movies. I didn't plug my USB drives to any Windows machine, or a TV. My Lexar 64GB JumpDrive is now formatted as exFAT. I know Android is based on Linux, and mainly uses ext4. Can I format my USB drive using Ubuntu to ext4 and use it as an OTG device to my phone? Or format it to NTFS or FAT32 is the better option. [link] [comments] |

After modifying /etc/fstab I am stuck in a boot loop Posted: 01 Nov 2021 11:16 AM PDT Kde on arch, after adding the following line to /etc/fstab I have been stuck in a boot loop, it regularly asks for my password and then shows some logs and asks for my password again.
The logs it shows don't look like errors and are really quick, here is a picture Is there a way I can get access to the terminal before booting? I don't have any bootable pendrive available at the moment (and my drive is encrypted so i have no idea how would that work out) [link] [comments] |
No lock screen on my new framework laptop. how can I start to debug that? Posted: 01 Nov 2021 07:11 AM PDT Greetings fellow humans, human fellas. I'm using my New Framework laptop and everything seems to work fine on my Fedora Gnome 34 edition install. However, the only thing that does not work is the lock screen. If I suspend the machine or put the lid down, the laptop goes into sleep mode and only wakes if I press the power button. However, when it resumes, it goes back to the desktop rather than the login screen(GDM, the one with the blurry background). I've never encountered this issue before and I don't know where to start searching for possible issues and start fixing them. If anyone can guide me through this that would be great. Thanks. Kubuntu installer stuck after Updates and other software Posted: 01 Nov 2021 10:44 AM PDT Hi, I'm trying to install Kubuntu 21.10 on my current pc alongside with Windows 10 which is already installed. As soon as I choose the options in the section Updates and other software and click continue, a label appears saying that it's preparing ubuntu drivers. After a few seconds, it disappears and it gets stuck. I've already tried disabling download updates while installing Kubuntu and disabling the option to install third-party software, but it still gets stuck there. If I force a shutdown, it takes a while because of the "ntfsresize", so I think it can't analyze the disks for some reason. I've also already tried changing the USB port and using another pendrive. I've read on the internet that the default ubuntu installer gets stuck if windows is installed, and that mounting and unmounting the windows partition a few times fixes the glitch, but neither the KDE partition manager nor GParted let me do it, the option is greyed out. I have 3 drives in total in my system, with a Core i5 4440 and a GTX 960, and I want to install Kubuntu on a drive where windows is not installed. I hope you can help me out, if you need more infos please ask me, I'll answer as soon as possible. [link] [comments] |
New to Linux Administration, Where should I start? Posted: 01 Nov 2021 03:07 AM PDT Hi all! I was just appointed to update the website of local university organization, and although I am familiar with web development I have never worked with server administration. From my understanding my job on that regard will be fairly simple (e.g. keeping backups, accessing db, updating ubuntu etc) but the truth is I do not know where to start. Does anyone have any good tutorials or tips in order for me to be able to do basic things on the server? Any help will be appreciated as I am currently feeling lost. [link] [comments] |
