Is it worth buying a 144hz 4K monitor?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 12:56 PM PDT

Looking for some opinions and inputs. I currently do not have a pc but will build one again when I can get a dang gpu first. I have a 4k 60hz monitor already but am looking for a second monitor for work. Was thinking about how I want to purchase a monitor that I would keep for the next 5-10 years or until the time when 4k becomes obsolete. I do have a ps5 but I know that it would never hit 120hz in 4k constantly or even at all since most games don't even support that yet. Any advice? Thanks!

Looking to upgrade cpu, not sure what my best option is.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 05:58 AM PDT

I have a Ryzen 5 3600 right now, it's served me well but I'm looking to upgrade to another ryzen cpu that's a bit faster. My budget is around 300 dollars but anything cheaper would obviously be better. I was looking at a ryzen 7 3700X but there are so many options that I don't know what the best choice is. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

E: thanks so much for all the help anyone that contributed, 5600x is looking like the way to go here

E2: perhaps on second thought I will wait a few months and see what the cpu market is looking like, glad my post created so much good discussion about this topic

PC stopped crashing after sending 3060 for a repair and using my 970

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 12:04 AM PDT

A month ago, I upgraded my pc and installed a new MSI RTX 3060 and since then, my pc crashed randomly to black screens when gaming. After a month on troubleshooting (driver resets, Windows 10 clean install, etc) and contact with Microsoft, the only last solution was to check the GPU. I sent the 3060 back to where I purchased it (CCL Online), for a repairs and used my old GTX 970 while it's away.

Since this swap, my pc has stopped crashing.

However CCL have said they tested the GPU and it had "no faults" , which I cannot understand, especially as my PC is running perfectly again. I asked them to check it for a while longer, as it crashed randomly from 20 minutes after boot, up to 5 hours of gaming.

I'm worried CCL will come back with "no faults" again for the GPU and wish to send it back. Which is basically back to square one.

Should I request a replacement, a refund (to get a different one) or risk the MSI 3060 again? I have 3 years warranty according to the CCL website, so I should be covered

    Thanks

    Edit: Added specs

i5-11600k (3.9GHz) RTX MSI 3060 Gaming Trio 12GB Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 32gb (DDR4 3600MHz) MSI MAG Z490 Tomahawk with MSI MAG Coreliquid 360R Corsair 1000W PSU (Gold rated)

Update: I've requested a refund from CCL as I'm fed up of the issues and MSI's bad support. CCL came back with no faults again after testing but I am going to risk having a faulty GPU again

My friend HAS to spend about $3200 on a new PC ASAP or lose the money. I recommended he get a 5600x + 3090 prebuilt. In the event that this becomes his main PC for a couple years, would it have been better to recommend him a more balanced build e.g. 5900x + 3080? PC's main use will be Warzone@1440p

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 02:38 PM PDT

For context, he wanted to build a PC, but this is a gift he's getting that he needs to order NOW, so we can't wait for GPU stock, we can't save part of the budget, etc. It has to be a one and done prebuilt purchase right now. I recommended the 5600x + 3090 combo so that he can have at least one top end part to carry over to his endgame build but also still have the good gaming performance of the 5600x in the meantime.

Later on, he mentioned that he may not be able to complete his ideal build for a couple years. I immediately started wondering if I should change my recommendation to something a little more balanced if he's not going to be pairing the 3090 with a higher end CPU in the near future. His goal is to play Warzone at 1440p at 165hz stable (and possibly higher refresh?). For whatever reason, CPU does seem to matter a lot in that game to the point where 5600x does not result in the same performance as a 5900x, and I'm not sure which combination would serve him better at 1440p but I'm leaning towards telling him to move forward and order the 5600x + 3090 build.

Any advice is much appreciated. This is the current parts list and I'd also love some critique, especially on that motherboard (choices are very limited sadly): https://imgur.com/ej8pADn

    Air Cooled VS Water Cooled

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 08:32 AM PDT

I am planning on building a pc soon and one of the most important things to me is it being as silent as possible (I don't want to hear it at all while wearing headphones) while also having high quality (1440p at least) graphics and high frame rates (120fps). Should I opt for a fan cooler or water cooler? I am going to get a rtx 3080, a ryzen 5 5600x, and a Corsair 4000d airflow for my case.

What graphics card should I choose?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 05:10 AM PDT

Hey, I am new to PC's and I don't know what graphics card I should pick. I'm too broke for a 3090 or anything over 1050 and I read on Google that you can't SLI a 1030. I picked all the other parts and I'm stuck on the graphics card. Please don't make fun of me, I am really new to PC's and I decided to get one bc they seem way more useful than a PlayStation. Also my English isn't the best

First PC build not working, GPU not detected

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 12:36 PM PDT

I built my first computer this week. when I went to start it up everything powered on, lights and fans, but I'm getting no monitor signal the motherboard is indicating the VGA LED in white after showing in the CPU LED in red for a few seconds. Which apparently means the GPU is not detected. I have tried everything I can find on the internet. I reset the CMOS battery, I tried starting it with only one ram, and I tried re-seating everything except for the CPU. I tried to take it to geek squad but they said they don't do custom PC repairs. I don't have any money to buy any more parts and I have no idea how to check the ones I've got, I have no other PC only a laptop. I bought the GPU on eBay as a NEW but open box item obviously I am a little concerned that might be my issue...

Do I really need a new cpu or is the repair guy trying to make a sale?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 06:21 AM PDT

So my pc wouldn't boot at all and I tried most things, took it to a repair shop (that also sells components and custom made pcs) and they took a look. They found the motherboard was dead because when they put in an different CPU, it still wouldn't boot.

Now they told me upon collection that they tested all my parts aside from the CPU and they're all fine, and they said that when the motherboard goes sometimes it'll kill the CPU with it.

They then suggested as well as replacing the motherboard i should think about replacing the CPU because if I risk putting a possibly faulty CPU in the new motherboard it has a chance of shorting it.

I see no real reason why the CPU would be an issue, they told me themselves they don't see any bent pins and it's clearly an issue with the motherboard since another cpu had the same flaw.

Was he suggesting a new cpu purely to try and make a sale or is it genuinely likely that my CPU is dead too?

    3600 MHz or CL16 RAM - Ryzen 7 5800x

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 02:37 AM PDT

I'm looking for a 32GB ram kit but in the config i'm locking into the only option is to either go with 3200 MHz CL16 or 3600 MHz CL18, so my question is what should I go with for best performance with a Ryzen 7 5800X

Is b550 or x570 tomahawk better for 4 sticks of RAM?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 12:02 PM PDT

I was looking at the b550 tomahawk or x570 tomahawk, depending on how much I sell my current PC for, and obviously the x570 is the higher end board; however, I noticed that the b550 has a higher max memory speed, probably because it is is newer, which means its better at memory overclocking right?

I'm planning to get 2 x 8GB ram at 3200mhz for my build initially, but might get another 2 x 8GB kit later if I need to. Would the x570 be likely to handle 4 sticks at 3200, or would the b550 be better for 4 sticks?

I know they both have daisy chain topology so 4 sticks isn't ideal, but I cant stretch my budget for 2 x 16GB right now. Ill be getting a 5600x if that matters.

    M.2 NVMe slot question

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 12:37 PM PDT

Hello everybody, I'm about to build my first PC and I have a question about NVMes. I got myself a 2TB PCIe 3 SSD which I'm planning to use as my only storage drive for now. I'm thinking of putting it in the PCIe 3 slot on my B550 motherboard and keep my PCIe 4 slot empty. Would that cause any problems?

My plan was to get only a large PCIe 3 SSD to use as boot and storage initially and potentially get a PCIe 4 later to use as a boot drive when/if there is a clear benefit to it (i.e. Direct Storage on PC games). In that scenario I would just install the new SSD into the empty PCIe 4 slot and move my OS there or clone my original drive and use the PCIe 3 as storage.

What do you guys think, would I run into problems installing the new boot drive? I'm definitely thinking into this far too much O.o

Edit: The manual is of no use, it just shows both slots being populated, I'm using a ROG Strix B550-F for reference

New rig running games at 1-2FPS

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 09:53 AM PDT

Sorry if this is the wrong place, since it's about a prebuilt, but basically the title...

I just bought a new desktop, and some of the games are playing with abysmally low fps, worse than my previous rig, which I built in 2013.

I'm not terribly tech savvy... enough to order parts and put them together, but not really enough to mess around with settings, overclocking etc.

The whole reason I bought a prebuilt was because I didn't want to have to mess with anything, so this has been a little frustrating...

I've been running all my games at whatever the default/recommended settings are. Hitman 2 has had the worst performance, with FPS going down to 1-2 at times, but some of the other games I play have also been worse than I had expected. Even when I significantly decrease the graphics settings, FPS doesn't improve, and the game is unplayable.

New World on (recommended) medium/high settings has been capping at around 20-25fps, WoW sticks at around 30.
I didn't know how to display the FPS in Read Dead 2, but it was also unplayable due to massive lag (presumably FPS of 5-10, but I really have no idea).

Meanwhile, Paladins will rock at 170-200fps, which I almost feel like must be an error... but performance seems to be great, so I don't really care!

Any ideas of what I should be checking? I don't want to return the computer if I can figure it out, but I'm def not going to keep it if this is what's to be expected.

TL;DR - Paid $1700 for a new PC. Some games (on recommended graphics settings) aren't playable, while others seem to be fine.

    Thanks in advance!

Primarily looking for a new CPU

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 12:54 PM PDT

Hi, fairly new to this so apologies for any faltering in my words.

I've an I5-9400. 16 Gigs of ram (DDR4) GTX 1650. The motherboard is an Alienware O2XRCM.

From what I gathered it'd be of my first interest so upgrading into a better CPU so would be appreciated. Price range doesn't matter, looking for suggestions of any kind.

Cannot figure out whether PSU or GPU is failing.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 04:49 AM PDT

A couple of days ago, while playing, my PC had suddenly just completely shut off without being able to turn anything back on. My first thought that it was the power supply that had given up, but after further investigation i had found out that everything will boot completely fine as long as the GPU isn't connected to the power supply.
But the confusing part is that, when the GPU isn't connected to the PSU, the GPU will still show some signs of life (from, im assuming, the motherboard being powered) such as the fans occasionally spinning and the LEDs on the card lighting up.

For clarification: Nothing on my PC will boot or turn on if my GPU is connected. Not even the case fans.
My only 2 assumptions were that:
    A) The GPU has just failed (makes me wonder why it completely blocks my PC from booting, tho)
or B) It's the PSU being unable to deliver enough power anymore.
I'm definitely not an expert so these are just speculations.
Would love to hear if anyone's got any ideas.

GPU - Nvidia GeForce 980 Ti
    PSU - Corsair RM750x
    CPU - i5-4690K @ 3.50GHz

I bought a EVGA 3070 Ti FTW3 for $800 - in case this helps anyone

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 08:48 AM PDT

I've learned that the best time to check Newegg is between 11:30pm and 2:00am (eastern time). Last week I found the 3070 Ti for $800 (still high but not bad in current market). It was at that cost because it's part of Newegg's hot items deal. You can select it but then you have to select other hot items and choose the assembly service with it.

It's a paywall for sure but the thing is, I was able to get that card, AMD 5800x, really good ram, SSD, case etc all for $2100. Previously the cheapest build I could create was $2745 with a worse card and the 5600x. All in all I feel like I made out well. If you're just looking for parts and not a full pc it's not the best option but for anyone building a pc for the first time, it seems like a good way to do it if you can catch the release time.

The only caveat is the assembly service. I've seen mixed reviews and haven't received mine yet so I'll update on how ENIAC does with the assembly

Feel free to share any experience you've had with ENIAC assembly in the comments

Looking to make a new build, opinions and feedback welcome!

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 04:24 PM PDT

Greetings, friends! So I was recently thinking of upgrading my current rig, but considering how old the MOBO is to a point the best CPU it can use is an i7-7700K, I figure it's time for a whole system upgrade. I was browsing around and came to a configuration I think I'm satisfied with, but could use some feedback regarding the parts I've selected. Any help is welcome!

The purpose of this build will be for moderate gaming, video editing, and streaming.

This build is 100% function over form (hence the Noctuas), so I'm perfectly okay with non-RGB parts.
