Home Networking POE camera in insecure environment

Home Networking POE camera in insecure environment

    POE camera in insecure environment

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 03:59 PM PDT

Hello :) Need some advice of how to make this the most secure. I'll be installing a POE IP camera in insecure environment (a hall in an apartment building). It will be connected to a switch (as well as NVR). Both camera and NVR need to be accessed from internet and ideally from lan: to have access to the camera via it's mobile application and to the NVR from PC.

So, what I want to achieve is: if someone would just rip the camera off and plug it's ethernet cable in a laptop he must not get access to my local network itself.

I have some basic knowledge so I came with the following options: - separate vlan for surveillance with access to internet only without lan. But that would limit me from accessing NVR locally. - camera with wifi using my guest wireless network. I'd prefer this to be wired. - physically resolder cable in camera and refit rj45 jack to something weird - some kind of mac blocking (mac-port on switch or mac whitelist on router). Do not like this for a dozen of reasons.

So, currently it seems options 1 or 3 are the best solutions. Anything you'd suggest? Thank you!

    Proxmox etc/interfaces

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 07:57 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

So I recently noticed proxmox says failed to load network service but everything seems to be working. I read up on this issue and noticed people saying to only have one default gateway. My config looks like this Etc/network/interfaces

auto lo iface lo inet loopback

    iface eno1 inet manual

    auto vmbr0 iface vmbr0 inet static address 192.168.10.2/24 gateway 192.168.10.1 bridge-ports eno1 bridge-stp off bridge-fd 0

    auto vmbr1 iface vmbr1 inet static address 192.168.10.101/24 gateway 192.168.10.1 bridge-ports eno2 bridge-stp off bridge-fd 0

Do I have to delete a gateway to have it stop failing? Thanks

Standalone Android LTE modem/router/phone providing home internet?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 03:30 PM PDT

Visiting a family member in a very rural area, where CenturyLink is the only option and they are paying $70/month for 10Mbs service. This is outrageous for anyone but particularly retired people so I am trying to find a suitable replacement until Starlink comes online in that area.

Verizon seems to be the only carrier that has coverage, so after a little research I found Visible wireless, and set it up on my iPhone. Getting speeds fluctuating between 25 - 70 Mbs.

However, Visible limits it's hotspot speed to 5Mbs. I have used pdanet+ myself on an android phone while traveling to avoid being throttled and that was flawless.

Is there an LTE modem/hotspot device that runs android so that pdanet or similar app could be run? Are there negatives of just using an old phone as a permanent standalone hotspot? (Galaxy 8+)
i'm worried about the range and the number of devices a phone could handle, so maybe the phone tethered to a PC over usb, then the PC sharing internet over ethernet to a router to provide wireless for the house?

    Remove AT&T Router

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 01:16 PM PDT

    Hey all,

    I've got AT&T Fiber. They issued me a router/modem combination BGW320-505.

Currently, they have fiber going from the wall into that. I have put it into IP Passthrough mode following these steps:

    https://help.sonic.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500000066642-ARRIS-BGW320

Out of port 1, I've got some ethernet cable going into my own Edge Router 4 which is configured how I want it, and the rest of my network is my own. Due to how the house is laid out, there's no way to just plug the fiber into my edge router without doing a bunch of runs which I do not want to do.

I'd really like to get rid of this thing (or at least put it in a box to give back to AT&T when they eventually want it back).

I'd love a dead simple modem that simply takes the incoming fiber from AT&T and converts it into ethernet so I can run with that. Ideally something with a small footprint and minimal power draw so I can put it on a small UPS since it's away from the rest of my network gear.

Need advice so that I don't lose all my expensive equipment....

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 01:12 PM PDT

Just bought a new home and am looking to install 5-6 G4 Pro cameras on the property (cameras will be attached roof eaves of the home, with the cable through the attic crawl space and back down to my network rack.). I've gone down a bit of a rabbit-hole after reading Ubiquiti's recommendation to install 2x Ethernet surge protectors per camera.

My house is about 50 years old in New York State (it's a developed community but still a bit rural) and now I am scared that a passing storm will fry my thousands of dollar's worth of equipment. Questions I have:

Are there any DIY guides for installing ethernet grounding or do I need to hire an electrician? Do I need to do a Shielded Ethernet everywhere or just for the section of ethernet that is outside? Do I need to run everything to a shielded patch panel and ground the network rack inside the home? Do I need to but a surge protector for all the equipment in the home?

I'm consider myself technically capable and don't mind the extra work to do it correctly. I just need some guidance on how to do this correctly….

Bought a house, and whole place will need re-wiring as the current one too told. Need some advice about ethernet cabling behind walls and wifi.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 12:23 AM PDT

    Hi all,

Just about to finish purchasing a house, and before moving in, I will be getting the whole place re-wired. Taking parts of the walls off to put wires in, put new sockets, blah blah blah.

I would like ethernet all around the house and wifi. I've tried powerline for Wifi but the connections drops off half of the time.

What do you guys suggest I do? (for those who have experience) Should I get ethernet cable all around the whole house and what about wifi? Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Network - No Internet problem

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 11:25 AM PDT

So I've got a new laptop. I posted the same problem 2-3 days ago, but I can't solve it this time. I can ping 8.8.8.8, I can ping google, but that's all, no internet connection. When I try to log in (to the internet, you know code and password) it says "unable to get MAC address!!!". The last time I solved this on me previous laptop it said the same thing too until I solved it (with winsock reset). Could you help me?

Extend existing wifi without added latency?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 01:53 PM PDT

I have 1 ASUS RT-AX58U. It's connected to WAN-box of apartment. My router has WiFi enabled. I need better WiFi coverage upstairs. I prefer to extend the existing WiFi without creating a second WiFi if it's possible. I want to keep the latency to a minimum upstairs. I have a long cable I can install between floors. Is it enough to get another router and put it upstairs, and configure it with the same SSID?

    Idea A: WANBoxPort1-router1-wifissid1 WANBoxPort2-router2-wifissid1

    Idea B: WANBoxPort1-router1-wifissid1 WANBoxPort1-router1lan2-router2-wifissid1

    Which is preferable?

Need help with wiring my new home

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 07:22 PM PDT

I have never had a "panel" of networking equipment and I am trying to ensure I maximize my Ethernet and wifi. I bought two WAPs (TP link AX1800s, one TP-Link 8 port gigabit switch, one TP-Link gigabit VPN router, and one TP-Link Jetstream 8 port gigabit smart poe+ switch.

The house is prewired with WAPs so I thought they would be more useful then mesh ( no clue why).

Question 1) my Motorola modem connects with this new gigabit VPN router. Then from the router it connects to the Jetstream. Then I plug both WAPs to the POE porta on the Jetstream?

    2) anything I buy redundant? I have a modem and an old nighthawk router. I was thinking replace my nighthawk router with this new TP-Link gigabit VPN router.

Thank you for all the help.

Edit: picture of the network equipment I bought. http://imgur.com/a/q43yteD

Internet disconnects but active connections remain working

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 07:22 PM PDT

I have an issue where my internet will randomly stop working and I will be disconnected and unable to search google for example, but active things like a twitch live stream or a discord call will remain working unless I try to join a new call or stream, this happens seemingly randomly and it is very frustrating.

    Looking for a new router

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 06:21 PM PDT

I'm tired of paying the monthly fee for Comcast's modem/router combo so I'm looking into new units. I'm going to get the ARRIS SB8200 modem, but I can't decide on which router to get. The router is going to be on one side of the apartment due to logistics of where the cable comes in. I use the internet mostly to torrent, stream, and game. There are up to 6 wired and wireless devices connected to the network at the same time.

I've been looking at different TP-Link routers, initially looking at the first two but they're probably be serious overkill for my needs. I've also heard that wifi 6E is going to be coming along soon, so should I just get the Archer AX21 for now and wait for better routers to come out before upgrading beyond that?

    Introduction for a complete beginner

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 02:29 PM PDT

Hello, I just want some quick pointers for swapping out my current Atlantic broadband modem/router combo with a much nicer router. I have looked to see if it is compatible and everything seems to check out but to swap it out with my nighthawk x10 do I just plug the modem into the wall port? It just seems like it can't be that easy to me and I need to jump through some hoops. Am I missing some settings I will need to change?

Nighthawk Router Issue - Netgear wants $$ for previously fixed problem

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 12:03 PM PDT

    Router - NETGEAR - Nighthawk AX5400 Wi-Fi 6 Route

    Modem - NETGEAR - Nighthawk 32 x 8 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem

Recently moved. At our previous home when i setup the internet, the router was getting 800 mb/s through the speed test via the nighthawk app. Any other device was only getting 200-300. I used the free support. They had me login into the web portal via 192.168.1.1 - I think we ended up changing "channels" (maybe) via advanced settings, i remember trying a few different numbers i think in the 800s and within a few minutes everything in the house was getting 600-800 mbp.

Fast forward. Move to new house. End up resetting router to forgotten password and running into the same problem. Internet is 400 mbps. Nighthawk app and netgear portal show 400+ mbps while any speed test on other devices is 75-125mbps. I'm in the portal and am having issues remembering what the previous fix is. Tried changing the channels without luck.

Checked in with Netgear to see if i could have notes from previous tickets since it only shows "ticket closed' now. They want me to sign up for their 6 month support for like $89.99. Super annoying!

    Couldn't get powerline ethernet working

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 02:14 PM PDT

I have two Zyxel powerline ethernet adapters. I used them at my old home. I'm living in a new place now. I tried hooking them up here but they wouldn't work. All the lights were green and blinking on the adapters but my PC didn't have internet.

When I ran the Windows troubleshooter it eventually said that the ethernet connection didn't have a valid IP configuration. Could this be because someone else is already using a different brand of powerline ethernet adapters in the home?

Using Cox Gateway as Modem can’t access router admin page

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 01:37 PM PDT

So I just picked up a pair of ASUS Routers to mesh my home with, and went through the normal setup process. I connected to my Cox Panoramic Gateway modem-router and enabled bridge mode to disable the wireless, and connected the ASUS router to it. If I go to router.asus.com or 192.168.1.1, it doesn't resolve, and if I go to 192.168.0.1, it takes me to the Cox router admin page. The only way I've managed to access the ASUS utility is to disconnect the Ethernet cable from the router, am I missing something here?

    Bad RJ-45 Connectors?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 05:12 PM PDT

I have my house pre-run with Cat6 cable to my bedrooms and PoE security cameras. When making cable i have a Klein tools cable tester that says the cords i'm making pass. When using them on the camera they work great. When using them on my desktop and xbox, they do not work.

I have an old Cat6 that came with my router. Works on my desktop. I cut the ends off and replaced the terminals. Pass's on the tester, doesn't work on the desktop.

Do i jut have sh*t connectors?

    Mid-2000 home networking software

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 01:07 PM PDT

Hello! Out of no where today I thought about this piece of software that was used to setup a basic home network. It allowed you to setup file shares, share printers, view a network map, maybe even remotely control other machines on your network. If I had to guess, it was probably around the 2007 - 2010 era. It might have been released by a major brand like Cisco, Linksys, or Netgear, but maybe not. I only used this for a short period of time but trying to remember what it was called is really bugging me!

Does this ring a bell for anyone else?

Somewhat simple 10gig home network design advice

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 04:29 PM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, so if it isn't please let me know where I should go.

It's time for me to move up to a 10gig network, and I've hit a roadblock on my comprehension.

    Current layout:

ISP cable modem | (cat5e) primary router (linksys running openwrt) / | | \\ 2nd router desktop 1gig switch ~150ft cat5e to outbuilding (patches (5 ports) (server and raspis) coverage) (laptops, printer, etc)

I need to switch to a 10gig fiber run to the outbuilding, and I'm starting to think that running a full network firewall with openwrt on a wrt3200acm isn't the best idea. My desktop also needs to be on the 10gig network, and while I'm at it I'll probably run fiber out to a far shed to get wifi out there as well (or at least have the option while I'm trenching for fiber and power).

The layout I'm imagining is the following, but I'm not sure where to start on finding the right switch for what I'm calling the distribution switch (networking is next semester...). I'd like to convert the wifi routers into APs, and will keep openwrt as I'm not interested in reinventing that particular wheel atm. Another requirement is vlans and a robust firewall.

     ISP cable modem | (cat5e) Distribution switch with firewall / / |x12 | \\ \ cat5e cat5e cat5e MM OM3 MM OM3 MM OM3 or cat5e / / |x12 | | | AP #1 AP #2 1gig jacks outbuilding shed desktop Dell 5424 5gig?

The switch in the outbuilding is a dell powerconnect 5424, which is ample for my needs out there. My desktop has a 5gig port on the motherboard, so at first it would be cheaper to just bring the desktop up to 5 gig over cat5e using an sfp+ module.

If it weren't for my desire to remove the linksys routers from handling internet traffic other than that originating from a wifi device I'd just go buy a MikroTik CRS305-1G-4S+IN and be done my Monday. But I'd like to switch to more commercial grade network software (largely as a learning experience), as well as separate traffic a bit more with vlans for security.

I'd appreciate any feedback on potential problems/stupidities in my imagined layout, as well as suggestions on what hardware to buy for the primary switch/firewall.

    Edit: fixed formatting disaster

Difference between indoor ethernet cable and outdoor ethernet cable? Builder marking up 2.5x the price for outdoor ethernet cables

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 07:17 AM PDT

So I'm in the middle of making decisions for a pre-construction home and want to wire outdoor PoE security cameras.

Problem is, they are charging much higher for outdoor ethernet cabling ~$400 per run vs. the indoor one at ~$150.

Would it be crazy to suggest them to use the indoor ethernet cables for the outdoor runs or am I setting myself up for disaster by doing so due to environmental damage that can be caused? Weather here ranges to freezing cold (-20C) to hot (40C) for reference.

Interested to hear your thoughts. Some wire MAY be exposed? If I can't tuck it behind the cameras, otherwise I hope to wrap it in conduit or some sort of shield to protect as much of it as I can.

    Assist with configure 2 routers

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 03:57 PM PDT

    Hi,

I would really appreciate if someone could assist with my routers configurations.

So I have 2 routers in my home, the first one, the "Main" router is in my work room, and connected with cable to the second router that in the living room.

The main router have Wifi off and the secondery router Wifi is ON.

My PS connected with cable to the second router and I experience disconnection from time to time and I wonder if I misconfigured something.

I think that DHCP should be turned on on my main router (it basically say that I don't need to enter the username and password as I would in if it was PPPOE, right?)

What important configuration I need to configure on each one of them so it won't disconnect from time to time?

Another question- from my PC that wiredly connected to my Main router I can't access the configuration of the secondery router from the browser.. only from my phone(when connected through the Wifi). is that ok?

    Thanks!
