So after months of saving my dear cat decided to piss on my computer Posted: 29 Sep 2021 03:46 AM PDT So hey everyone, how's everyone doing today? My first post here so please be gentle. I spent the last few months saving up a little each month so I could save up to buy a PC that would settle me up for some time, after years of building my friends PCs and setting them up I decided to go for mine. Everything was going good until some weeks ago that I came back from work and my PC turned on and off for a second, I panicked since nothing like that has ever happened to me so I decided to open it up, took off the GPU and yeah, the smell was horrible so I noticed it was actually pee from my cat. I already tried turning on the PC with the onboard GPU and its working fine which makes me a little bit less sad. But I tried my GPU on an old PC from a friend of mine and it shows no sign of working either, it turns ON and OFF exactly like mine. (ofc I cleaned it with Qtips carefully and I didn't try a gpu on mine because he doesn't have one) So yeah it was a 3070ti which here is extremelly expensive so I can't put out money to get another one since I'm expecting a child. So I decided to post here asking if anyone has any solution that I can try to revive this GPU or there's no chance of fixing it. Thanks in advance everyone! [link] [comments] |
New GPU strategy at Best Buy? Scored a 3080 today! Posted: 29 Sep 2021 12:36 PM PDT Ok, I think I got lucky today at BB with an RTX 3080 MSI GAMING Z TRIO. I'm over the moon, finally got the card I've been waiting a year for. I just happened to refresh my 3080 search shortly after 12pm EDT and a few cards were showing a button for "see details" instead of the typical "sold out". The product page said not in stock today for online or in-store... but still had a button suggesting it was available for purchase/pickup at my local store. I clicked and it put me into a queue, "confirming availability" at my store then told me a card was available. They emailed me a verification code, to prove I'm not a bot, then let me put it in my cart and checkout. No shipping available. Online order for in-store pickup - expected to be ready October 8th (next Friday). Is this a new GPU strategy by BB? Allocate a few cards to each store, and allow online orders (effectively pre-orders) for pickup? Seems much better than standing in line all night for an in-person drop. [link] [comments] |
Going to gift my brother a new pc for his work. Need some help as i am a total noob in pc building. Posted: 29 Sep 2021 02:42 AM PDT I have never built a pc before. Hell i have never even owned a pc before and i have always been a laptop guy. My brother is an interior designer and he does a lot of rendering. He makes entire landscapes and houses in his renders and they look absolutely beautiful. Recently, he told me that his pc is getting too slow in making the renders and he might have to upgrade soon. His birthday is in november and i would like to give him a really high end pc. Below are the specs i have thought of till now. ( I just googled best gpu, processor ram etc so ease dont blame me) Processor- Ryzen threadripper 5990x Ram - 128gb g.skill trident royal neo 4000mhz Cl 16 Boot drive - samsung 980 pro 500gb Primary drive- sabrent rocket q 8tb GPU- 2 × NVIDIA geforce rtx 3090 Motherboard- ASUS ROG zenith II extreme alpha CPU cooler - Lian li galahad 240mm PSU- Corsair AX1600i Case- Lian Li O11 dynamic Fans- 6x Noctua NH-D15 black chromax I don't exactly know how much of a jump this is from his older pc but i hope it would be worth it The total is coming around $12000 I will not be doing the building of the pc, that's my brothers job. Do let me know if i need to change something in here [link] [comments] |
Finally bought the parts for my first build! AAH Posted: 29 Sep 2021 02:38 AM PDT I am so excited but so scared at the same time. I really didn't think I would ever build my own pc but I guess I am now :0 I honestly have not played any games on pc in like a year because my laptop just literally sounds like the engine of an airplane which makes the experience very shitty lol- so I am very excited about playing games without lagging as I don't think I have ever played a game on pc where I have not done that :DDD The monitor won't be sent until next week so hopefully I will have all the parts in two/three weeks depending on how quick they get here/ don't get delayed... + aLso! I should have the screwdriver I need and some zip ties laying around for cable management, but do I need anything else? Like an extra cable for the monitor or ??? Here is my parts lists for those interested:
Also thank you for all the help that I've gotten from this sub while finding parts, I am really thankful. I am definitely coming back here when I have gotten my parts and can start building as I do not want to make mistakes:)))) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2021 09:16 AM PDT Hello. I'm a total boomer and had a pc built for me several years ago with a I5-4590 and 16gb ram with a 500gb ssd. It originally had a gtx 960 but I upgraded that to a 1060 6gb card. Also I had this built in a ITX case https://www.coolermaster.com/catalog/cases/mini-itx/elite130/ I have a Corsair CX500M power supply. Obviously the CPU is old and I know that to change that I'll need some other parts. My plan is to upgrade the graphics card next year. But CPU this year. I would be up for getting a new case if needs be. I bought the one I have due to playing on my tv and it sits nicely underneath. I only just fit my current card in the case so I'm guessing new ones are even bigger? So, what CPU would be good? I hear AMD are better now? Budget for CPU would be between £200-250 What motherboard would I need? What RAM would I need? 16gb still enough these days? Also I would like to keep my ssd as a second drive and have one of those new ones that slot into the motherboard..I think that's right lol. 500 gb needed. I still have my windows 10 key so could that swap over? Ideally I would just buy from Amazon as their refund system cannot be beat imo. Any help would be fantastic!! [link] [comments] |
I may have made the worst financial decision. Posted: 29 Sep 2021 12:09 PM PDT I've been without a PC for the past 5 years and have been doing everything on my phone/tablet and gaming on my xbox one and now on a Series X. The Series X is what made me want to pull the trigger and step into a new PC build. Of course right now the price tag of that is rather tear inducing. So with a faint heart this morning my bank account became much smaller. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QfrKW3 CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800x 3.8GHz Motherboard: MSI MPG X570 GAMING EDGE WIFI ATX AM4 GPU: EVGA GeForce RTX 3080Ti 12GB FTW3 ULTRA CPU COOLER: LIan Li GALAHAD AIO 240 RGB RAM: G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32GB (2× 16GB) DDR4-3600 STORAGE: Samsung 980 Pro 1TB M.2-2280 NVME PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA GA 850 W 80+ Gold cert. For an MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge WiFi motherboard, is it better to have 4 sticks of RAM or just 2 Posted: 29 Sep 2021 12:26 PM PDT I currently have 4 but have been having slow boot times. Someone on this sub recommended taking 2 of the sticks out, but that did not help (left Ram in the 2nd and 4th slots) but that left me wondering if I should even be running 4 sticks of ram or if I should be running only 2 sticks I know that on some motherboards even though there are 4 slots, it's recommended to only run RAM on 2 slots. Not sure where my motherboard stands on this [link] [comments] |
First PC Build - could definitely use your input Posted: 29 Sep 2021 03:50 AM PDT Hey Everyone, I have recently decided to invest in a proper pc. I have always enjoyed gaming, but never invested any money into it. I want to try it now, but I'm worried that I will buy parts that aren't compatible with each other or I'll miss something because I'm so new to all of this. Anyway, here's the build: Storage: Samsung 860 EVO M.2 SATA SSD 1TB Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming B550M Plus Wi-Fi Motherboard GPU: PowerColor Radeon RX 6600 XT Fighter 8GB RDNA 2 Case: Phanteks Eclipse P400A Airflow Tempered Glass Black CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X with Wraith Stealth RAM: Team T-Force Dark Z 16GB (2x8GB) 3200MHz CL16 DDR4 Grey Power: Cooler Master MWE White 750W Power Supply Any advice or input is appreciated. Thanks in advanced!! [link] [comments] |
Help me identify these old PC parts Posted: 29 Sep 2021 02:21 PM PDT Hey guys, I'm cleaning up my dads pc stuff. Can anybody tell me what the two bottom sticks in this image are? The one above is a standard DDR3 stick as a reference. The bottom one looks like a small form factor Ram that predates DDR1. The middle one I don't even know. Is that even Ram? Almost looks like one of these old CPUs that were modules. Is there any use case for such old parts today? [link] [comments] |

Best CPU's to pair with 1660 super Posted: 29 Sep 2021 03:56 AM PDT Hi all I currently have a overclocked 4690k@ 4.5 Ghz and a 1660 super. Looking to upgrade to a better CPU now as my i5 is well past its day and holding my 1660 back i feel. What would be a optimal CPU to pair with it? For purely gaming performance. Posted: 29 Sep 2021 11:30 AM PDT I have 2 x 16GB DDR4-3600 CL-16, 1.35V sticks for my AMD5950x running on a Gigabyte Vision D-P mobo. Tha RAM is Crucial Ballistix - see here: https://www.crucial.com/memory/ddr4/bl2k16g36c16u4w I just got another set from the same reseller. Same model, same everything. However, the motherboard is reporting one set as DR and the newer set as SR. I bought these about 1 week apart from the same reseller. Is this a problem? I use the system as a workstation (running Linux) with a truck load of VMs running. Thank you in advance for your advice and comments! [link] [comments] |
Is this a SSD with a missing part or a SSD cover? Posted: 29 Sep 2021 02:59 PM PDT It clearly says that it is a 1TB SSD but it doesn't look like it has the part to be placed into the motherboard. Could someone clarify what this is please? Here is a picture of said part: https://imgur.com/a/iV3xQes [link] [comments] |
Is it better to connect fans to the motherboard? Posted: 29 Sep 2021 06:45 AM PDT Hey, I've got a "Lian LI Lancool 215", a case that has an integrated "fans card" that control power supply of all 3 fans and the ARGB. I'm wondering if it is better to connect all fans directly to the motherboard or it will not change anything. Is the motherboard capable of control fans speed? Did the ARGB card can control all fans individually? Thank you in advance for your help [link] [comments] |
Where can I get these super small screws? like much smaller than the "normal size" Posted: 29 Sep 2021 12:34 PM PDT they are for this prebuild's gpu, its not powerful but he needs it for dual monitor set up. they are so small, they are even smaller than mobo stand screws [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2021 09:30 AM PDT So as the title suggests im looking at a new PC case to replace my current x71 case from thermal take. ive had my eyes on the Fractal Torrent and or the Corsair 7000D, RGB is not a huge factor so i dont really care for anything flashy, just want a case to fit an EATX board, with 3 gpus and has decent airflow and would look nice tucked away under my desk, anyone here got any other ideas or are my options decent? RTX 3070 high temps and fan power on idle Posted: 29 Sep 2021 02:15 PM PDT Hi, I recently got an RTX 3070 https://www.gigabyte.com/ca/Graphics-Card/GV-N3070AORUS-M-8GD-rev-20#kf and I'm seeing temps of about 50 degrees C with 57% GPU fan power on idle using HWInfo to check with about 0-2% gpu usage. My case is a fractal meshify C with no extra case fans. Was wondering if this was a bit on the high end and if there were any solutions to fix it. I've tried reinstalling the NVIDIA drivers already (without using DDU). Any help is great thanks! [link] [comments] |
3060ti FTW3 vs 3070 XC3 ultra? Posted: 29 Sep 2021 10:18 AM PDT So after 4 months of hunting, I just so happened to wake up to today's Best Buy drop and I frantically clicked everything I could and managed to score both a $530 3060ti FTW3 and a $640 3070 XC3 ultra. I'm still sweating... the 3060ti FTW3 was exactly the card I wanted from the very beginning of my hunt and the 3070 was supposed to be a backup in case I couldn't get the former. I'm gonna keep one and sell the other to a buddy who missed out on this drop at work. I heard the 3060ti and the 3070 are quite close in performance and that the 3070 doesn't really warrant the price hike. Also with a FTW3 3060ti I should be able to OC it way more comfortably than the XC3 3070, further tightening the gap between the two, right? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2021 02:00 PM PDT So there is a 3060 for ~600 usd including VAT. I can buy it on the company to get rid of the VAT(20%) to get the price down to 490 usd. Feels like a pretty bad price but im worried it's not gonna get any better. [link] [comments] |
Is it worth upgrading to a 3060ti from a 980ti for 1440? Posted: 29 Sep 2021 11:37 AM PDT My 980ti is still trucking along keeping up with some new stuff, there's just a few newer games I had put on a wait until upgrade list like RDR2, Doom Eternal and one or two others. I've been entering the NewEgg Shuffle for many months now click on every 3060ti, 3070(&ti), and 3080 and hadn't really thought about it until today that the 3060ti may not really be worth it for me. I looked at a couple benchmarks, but I think I'm just not savvy enough to tell if the 3060ti is really worth it for me and I should just stick to hoping for a 3070 or above. [link] [comments] |
Where to start upgrading a 4-5 year old rig Posted: 29 Sep 2021 07:49 AM PDT Hey folks, my husband's rig is about 4-5 years old at this point, and it's finally starting to show its age. Notably, the GPU is getting incredibly hot (in terms of "ouch, the case itself is hot" and not actually monitoring the temperature via any sort of program). He's been wanting to upgrade for a few months now and as a result I'm trying to figure out where to start. His current build:
There's no custom cooling or anything, just a standard water cooler for the CPU, stock GPU fans, and case fans. With the motherboard being so old I'm not sure where support for newer cards cuts off, and with the price and availability of cards right now I'm hesitant to try to look for one. Tips would be appreciated! As an aside, I know that there are ways to do a checkup on a GPU and apply fresh thermal paste, etc., but I'm not comfortable enough in my skills to do that - and I would feel utterly terrible if I wrecked my hubby's GPU trying to fix it. Looking to upgrade CPU, MOBO and RAM Posted: 29 Sep 2021 09:58 AM PDT Hey peeps. Friend of mine has an old PC with a second gen i7 and some really old RAM. He's looking to upgrade his CPU, RAM and MOBO. What he will recycle from his old build: SSD's RX 580 8GB Possibly the power supply (not sure what wattage he has so I'd double check that later) I was thinking of getting a R5 3600, unless you have other suggestions. Assuming he gets a R5, which MOBO should he go for, maybe a B450? He does light gaming and that's pretty much it. And RAM I guess at least 3200MHz 16CL? All in all he wants to spend around 500-600 CAD for all 3 components...Thanks! [link] [comments] |
