Good Day guys; I was wondering if anyone knows what causes this "Program" thing to appear on Task Manager//startup? - There were two of these and one disappeared. Weeks ago they used to refuse when I "disable" their startup status but now it works. Nothing is wrong with my PC though (Win10 21H1). Windows Help

Is any of these statements about Windows 11 true?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 10:01 AM PDT

I heard some wild statements about Windows 11. While they may be fearmongering, my habit is to always make sure of it, so I'm gonna ask away. Is it true that Windows 11...

    • ...is incompatible with 32-bit software?

    • ...is incompatible with the June 2010 DirectX 9 runtime?

    • ...is incompatible with executables created with Visual Basic 6?

    • ...requires a constantly active Internet connection to work?

    • ...is only compatible with software that has been validated by Microsoft (which would exclude any software a user has made for himself with FOSS tools like Codeblocks)?

They fit in really nicely with Vista don't you think?

Here's a video I found that actually showcased it: https://youtu.be/OMe_5yF7wzk

Image File Execution Options Injection (IFEO) Mitigations

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 08:10 PM PDT

    From mitre

    https://attack.mitre.org/techniques/T1546/012/

IFEOs are represented as Debugger values in the Registry under HKLM\SOFTWARE{{\Wow6432Node}}\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\ where <executable> is the binary on which the debugger is attached.

    ...

MitigationsThis type of attack technique cannot be easily mitigated with preventive controls since it is based on the abuse of system features.

Why does someone want to put their debugger in registry (path as shown above) when he/she can execute it directly?

I did test this and did not see any new key in the registry

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\

Debugger command that I used for this testing

    C:\dbg\ntsd.exe -g notepad.exe

    .

I was on 21H2, needed to reinstall Windows, now on 21H1. Is Insiders the only way to get back?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 04:04 PM PDT

Hey team! Random question that I couldn't find much information on doing web searches. As mentioned, I was on 21H2 for quite some time. I needed to reinstall Windows 10 and went through the standard USB Media Creation Tool.

After having done a few updates, I'm still somewhat surprised to see that I'm still not on 21H2, even though this PC had been previously.

My main questions are surrounding its necessity for my use case, primarily in gaming and CUDA. I have a VR headset, the HP Reverb G2 through WMR and I'm mostly curious if there were any major improvements for VR between H1 and H2.

In addition to that, I was mildly interested in W11, but did not want to use Insiders to get it (stable system is important to me). I'm wondering if H2 is more likely to be a W11 rollout (not that it matters too much, I'm likely going to wait ~6 months or so after its release).

Anyway, I'm mostly just curious. I remember being excited for H2 but I can't remember why anymore, and now I'm just interested in learning if there's any major differences for users who were on H2 but then had to move back. Thanks for any information!

"Windows Insider Build ran into a problem"

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 02:15 PM PDT

My PC crashes and restarts every now and then with this error message "Windows Insider Build ran into a problem". The error code is "VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED". Anyone know a fix for this? and is it anything to worry about?

Power and sleep settings for external monitors

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 01:08 PM PDT

Sorry if this has already been asked. I tried searching for it and the closest thing I found was this post, but it doesn't address the problem.

Here's what I want to do:

When using my laptop as a laptop:

    1. When connected to power - closing the lid - put laptop to sleep
    2. When not connected to power - closing the lid - put the laptop to sleep

When my laptop is connected to an external display via HDMI:

    1. When connected to power - closing the lid - don't put laptop to sleep
    2. When not connected to power - closing the lid - don't put laptop to sleep

Anyone found a way to do this yet? I'm on Windows 10. Thanks!

The New Microsoft Windows Store To Support Third-Party App Stores

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 11:37 AM PDT

stupid taskbar in windows 11, or so i have heard.

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 10:23 AM PDT

i was looking foreword to trying windows 11 but then i found out that the taskbar can only be on the bottom of the screen. ever since windows 95 i have had my task bar at the top of the screen. it just makes sense to me as everything else you do you move the mouse to the top for the options in that app. why microsoft decided to take this option out is beyond me. what possible benefit does it serve? i will not upgrade to windows 11 until this is fixed.

    Windows is frustrating

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 09:58 AM PDT

Hey, i was just installing a program driver booster and i think that this is a crime that windows doesn't have an app that would search for all compatible drivers available for pc and download them all. Going into device manager and manually search for the update is killing me. In linux you only have to write one command to update all drivers automatically and in windows i have to download 3rd party apps just to not waste time. HOW IS THAT LEGAL (thinking about switching to mint but MS Office and rocket league still holding me on windows :( )

Edit: driver booster is a good Software, it's not a Virus, i don't care what you think it sounds like. Btw i removed it

    Sysinternals Autoruns Image Hijacks

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 11:55 PM PDT

I've been reading about Sysinternals Autoruns here -> https://www.varonis.com/blog/how-to-use-autoruns/

Image Hijacks are quite sneaky in that the Windows registry has a key to launch a certain process but instead is redirected to launch a different malicious process.

And wondering is there any good example for this?
