Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • $1000 USD, will go up to $1500 USD if absolutely necessary.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Long (5+ hours) battery life, build quality that keeps it from breaking 5+ years from now, SSD needed, specs that won't become outdated for many years.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • I should be able to carry it with a standard laptop bag and still be able to walk.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • None.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • None.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • DVD drive capable of working with dual-layer discs, good sound quality (no tinny or high-pitched audio, speakers shouldn't be notorious for that "rattling" effect either, laptops with bad audio don't interest me, good bass levels needed).

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • I need something that will stay strong and not break for the next 10 years or so, even if it means sacrificing looks and functionality for materials and build quality. If it's made by a company that's notorious for selling products that break quickly, I want to steer clear of that company.

Looking to buy a decent midrange laptop for business and personal use

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 02:35 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Budget ranges from 500-1000USD. Can spend more if needed

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes as long as they run well

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life is not a priority, performance is the key factor, would like it to last maybe the next 3-4 years, it's more of a temporary requirement for school

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important at all, my last laptop was 20 inches and weighed like 10 pounds so I'll take anything

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Cisco Packet Tracer Open Shot Video Editor Gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

The most demanding game I play is Phasmophobia. I would like a steady frame rate at the bare minimum. 60 FPS is a luxury not a requirement.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

No touchscreens; a decent keyboard is nice but just a privilege

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This is more so a temporary laptop until I can afford to build an actual computer. Playing Phasmophobia with friends is the main thing I want from this.

Girlfriend asked me to find a Laptop for Interior Design studies, but I am no specialist - therefore I need assistance of you, boys and girls.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 01:51 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • $1300 USD, will go up to $1900 USD if absolutely necessary. (or 1300-1600 EUR)

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Okayish battery life, but not really a HUGE issue, as she charges it in faculty/university, build quality that keeps it from breaking 4+ years from now, SSD needed, specs that won't become outdated for many years. No need 2-1 or touch.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • She should be able to carry it with a standard laptop bag and still be able to walk. Fairly portable, would love for her to use a light laptop.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • 15inch.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • V-ray for Sketchup, Autocad, Archicad, 3Dmax, Revit, Photoshop, Sketchup, Iliustrator.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • None.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • No need of touchscreen, would love it to be fairly good in terms of having a variety of ports, but not necessary, would love the keyboard to not bend much when pushed and such, sound quality should be OK but not necessity for it to be perfect.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • All in all, we need a laptop that is designed for Interior Design and Architecture Studies. Prefer AMD Ryzen versions over Intel, focus is on driving nicely when using Video Editing, Photo Editing, Design Applications. 15 inches, quite solid build that is not bending. ADDITIONALLY - HUGE preference onto 3 things - color quality and brightness, not a loud fan and does not heat up under moderate-higher moderate performance. (these are her biggest preferences after the apps for design running smoothly)

QUICK EDIT: for now I see Legion 5 version (non-pro) with 5 5600 and 3060, 16GB and 512 SSD as the front runner.

My 5 year old laptop's fans shoot on as soon as I boot up photoshop and regularly used programs like discord crash after an hour or so of a voice/video call so I need a replacement. I've been looking into the Surface Book line as I like the form factors and some of the accessories but I don't know how much of a premium I'm paying on it vs another laptop. I've tried out a few different laptops like the Acer Ezel ConceptD and a few different dell options and haven't been too impressed by those and I've been thankful for reasonable return policies through amazon for it.

    Budget 15-17” laptop w/ good keyboard - AUD$1k, Australia

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 12:16 AM PDT

Looking for a budget laptop for WFH with a large screen and great keyboard. I'm currently using a Macbook 12" from 2017 with the infamous (awful) butterfly keyboard. It was great when I needed more portability, but I'm now only moving from my desk to my couch. I use Logitech wireless mechanical keyboard and mouse at my desk but I want more freedom to move around the house.

I haven't bought a Windows laptop in years, so really grateful for your guidance!

    *LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: *

    AUD$1000ish

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

From a reputable dealer with a warranty, no problem

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality, performance, battery life, form factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not at all, as I already have a lightweight portable option if I need it. I don't want anything that feels flimsy.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15"-17"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Occasional basic photo editing, nothing crazy. I use mostly use Microsoft Office esp Word and Excel, Citrix, Zoom and Salesforce (in Chrome browser).

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Every few years I'm in the mood to play The Sims, but it's not a dealbreaker. In general I game on console.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard and touchpad!!!!!! I cannot stress enough how important that is, it's the main reason I am looking at a new system. The MacBook butterfly has almost no travel and feels awful to type on. I don't need any fancy extras as long as the input devices are good.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've been a Mac user at home forever but I don't use a computer recreationally enough anymore to shell out 3k for the 16" MacBook Pro. I'm hopelessly out of touch with which companies are making great windows systems these days.

    I've been looking at these options: - ASUS Vivobook Notebook Core i15/16gb ($997) or i7/16gb ($1297) (F513, intel 11th gen) - ASUS Vivobook s15 i5/8gb ($1059) (S533EA, intel 11th gen) - Asus Vivobook s17 AMD Ryzen 5/8gb ($1103)(s712, US model) - Dell Inspiron 3501 i5/8gb ($1099) (RNI350102AU, intel 11th gen) - Acer Aspire 5 (i7/16gb) ($1219) (A515-56, intel 11th gen)

Are any of these options appropriate?? Any other recommendations?

Light and modest laptop for gaming and school work

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 11:30 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
2.5 million tugriks (~$900) or below
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
it can be used, not refurbished
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I am prioritizing the performance with the dedicated graphics card(gtx 1050ti, or 1060 would be awesome). I prefer 16GB ram, but it can be 8gb, and for the cpu intel's 8th gen or amd's 4th gen ryzen is fine. Im not wasting any money on 144hz display I just want 60hz and prefer some correct color in adobe srgb.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
If it is 2kg(4.4 lbs) or below it is fine for me.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15.6 or less.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I mostly use Adobe after effects, premiere pro, illustrator, photoshop, and blender. For games, I sometimes play Apex Legends and Minecraft.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
For Apex Legends, just 60fps without any issue, thermal throttling, and stutters with the low and mid settings. I mostly play on low-mid settings with a higher texture streaming budget
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A good keyboard and touchpad would be nice since sometimes I have to work on docs. Also good brightness and anti-glare screen would be nice

CS student in need of a new Laptop [$800 Budget][US]

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 02:35 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $800

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Open to them but I'd strongly prefer a new machine.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Build Quality>Performance>Battery>Form Factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not very important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

This is my one real need and I've really got to have a 15.6"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Mostly programming, light gaming. I'd like to have enough resources to run a Linux VM

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Honestly if it can play Stardew Valley at 30fps that's fine with me. I've got a rig for any heavy lifting.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I didn't think I'd be as particular as I am but a good keyboard and trackpad are something I really need as I'll be typing for most of the time I'm using it.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion

I've looked at a few so far and I'm pretty sold on this Ideapad 5 but I've heard there's a lot of issues with the BIOS and battery life falling rapidly. I also like this Vivobook but it's a little pricey for what I hear is pretty meh construction, at least imo but I could be wrong. Also I'm not entirely certain if I need to look for something beefier being a CS major. However since I've got a powerful gaming rig I figured I could use it for anything these two couldn't handle. This is mainly going to be used for on the go programming and note taking along with web browsing.

US - 4000 Dollars - Software development and gaming (Any reason not to get a Zephyros S17?)

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 10:45 PM PDT

I'm a software engineer and my work is providing me with a 4k USD budget to buy a laptop. They want me to spend as much of the 4k as possible (I know right?)

It just needs to be a windows machine. If I could do some gaming on it, that would be great, but I'll primarily be using it for software development, so performance, and build quality/reliability are important. Right now I'm looking at a 2021 Zephyrus S17, but I'm wondering if any of you wonderful people have any other suggestions.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:4000, USA. The closer to 4000 the better.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?-Unfortunately not. My work will not allow this.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?-Performance > reliability > build quality > battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?-SOmewhat important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.-15 inches and up
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.-Using visual studio and working with databases. Also using it to run games/ ideally power a 4k monitor for gaming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?-60fps 4k or 1140 would be be great.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Whatever qualifies as a good, budget friendly, all around laptop is what were looking for. Something we can expect to get 5 years out of. Wife and I are both looking for new laptops, if theres a discount anywhere to buying 2 of the same model, we'd be interested. Currently on a 7 year old laptop with 8 GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600MHz and Intel Core 4th Generation i5-4210U processor. We don't use them for anything heavy, web browsing, netflix, Excel, video conferencing...

    Laptop suggestions

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:48 PM PDT

I'm trying to decide what laptop to buy. I'm think about possibly an Asus zenbook, a Lenovo ThinkPad, or a Dell xps 17. I'm open to other recommendations.

I want at least 16gb ram.

    Prefer a 2 in 1 laptop

    I want either an i-7, I-9, Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9.

    Form

Budget 1000-1600 * Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good specifications and battery are important, 2 in 1 in 1 * How important is weight and thinness to you? Not really only reliability * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15+ * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Video & Photo editing, and gaming.

Looking to buy a laptop for university.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:31 PM PDT

I will be needing a long battery life of 8+ hours preferably. I will be running a lot of programs and will be doing a lot of programming and compiling so it needs to be fairly capable. My budget is around 600-800$. What brands should I stay away from? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Laptops with decent screens for under $700 (USD)?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:10 PM PDT

By decent screens I mean good color accuracy and acceptable brightness levels. All the laptops I've seen under $700 have very crappy screens with low sRGB percentages.

I just need a laptop for general use and don't plan on doing anything intensive like gaming. i5 or Ryzen 5 with upgradeable memory would be ideal.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    € 1500

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Battery life, build quality, performance

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Should weigh no more than 2.5 kg or 5.5 lbs

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Anything between 13 and 15 inches is fine, though I'd prefer a 15 inch display

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Matlab, Microsoft Office, compilers such as Fortran, web browsing, light gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Don't have anything in mind but I would like to have the option of playing games. Should at least have an Intel Xe.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

It should be fast and durable, with an all metal build and biometric access. Good keyboard and trackpad. Screen resolution of at least 1440p. Should at least have 8 hours of battery life with light-medium use (web browsing, excel, powerpoint etc.) 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB or 1 TB of SSD. Not really necessary but I would appreciate it if it were a 2 in 1 and touchscreen.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am not considering the M1 MacBooks, as they have compatibility issues with many programs, so Windows only.
