    How to remove photos from showing on the gallery WITHOUT deleting them OR making them inaccessible by apps

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 05:43 PM PDT

    This is an unusual request.

    Recently I downloaded a RPGM game on mobile, playing it through a emulator. RPGM is a type of pc game, so I downloaded PC files, so it was not an APK like most android games downloads.

    Now here's the problem, the game uses multiple PNG files to store the graphics. That is fine for a desktop where stuff is stored in folders, however, in android, every single png file downloaded is now in my gallery. My gallery is completely flooded with over 10000 images of textures, sprites, etc.

    This is terrible. I lost track of all my old photos, buried in a sea of useless data. So what I want is, remove all the images from the main gallery but NOT delete them, and let them sit in a folder for example, just like a computer, so that they are hidden BUT the emulator can still recognize them.

    The images are right now in my internal storage/download/name of the game/www/data/images, and they still show up in the gallery. I tried sending all the images to the safe folder. While it did hide them from the gallery, the nature of the safe folder does not allow the emulator to use the png files, so the game is missing textures.

    So my question is, can I move my photos from the gallery to a folder or something like that, in a way that they are still usable by 3rd party apps, while only making the gallery show camera photos, meme downloads, just like normal? Basically like a safe folder without the safe, move them somewhere else but still visible to the system.

    I don't think moving them to another storage method will work, like google photos or onedrive, as they have to be in my system to be used as resources by the emulator.

    I guess these are the problems of downloading pc files in a mobile phone.....

    Thanks in advance. I might not be able to answer any questions as I have to go to sleep soon, but tomorrow I'll be sure to check everything.

    How have you customized/modified your phone to improve your experience?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:13 AM PDT

    Anything and everything from Tasker routines, Nova launcher + Sesame Shortcuts, Termux, to any other app or hardware improvement is welcome!

    Here are some of mine:

    • I've used Nova Launcher to add direct app shortcuts to home screen like "Create a note" for Google Keep. I have added opening the app itself as a swipe up option on the shortcut icon.

    • I use Sesame Shortcuts to let me to search for anything on YouTube, Firefox, or Play Store directly from my home screen. I only have to invoke the app search box by a double tap.

    • I use the Automate app to open multiple apps with just one tap. Once I click the shortcut icon named "Communications", it opens Gmail, then opens Google Messages after the previous one is closed, and opens WhatsApp and Discord in the same way one after another.

    • "Hold recent apps" button is a shortcut for taking screenshot. Eases one-handed use.

    • Nova swipe down gesture is used to reveal notifications.

    • Changed all animations in Developer Options from 1.0x to 0.5x.

    Android phone reset and lost all data. Can it be recovered

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 08:21 PM PDT

    So I am helping someone with their Samsung Galaxy A10e and the issue is that it appears that the phone was factory reset. Whats strange to me is that when I go into settings to look at the factory data reset date is says none as if the phone has never been factory reset. The owner lost all their contacts, photos, etc, etc, etc and would like to get them back but I have not used android in a number of years and don't know how to go about this. What would be the best way to go about this and can the data be recovered from the device?

    Help, my samsung galaxy xcover 4 crashed and is broken after restart.

    My phone just crashed while I was watching You tube and then restarted itself. Now the background is missing, I can't see my Battery nor connection status on top of the screen. The entire scroll down menu is gone as well as the virtual keyboard. Wierdly all the apps work just fine and I can access my memory card and gallery just fine. I have restared it three times thus far, but nothing changed. Do I need to hard reset it?

    Was trying to scan files with my brand new Samsung S21 using google drive and this happened, anyone know how to fix it?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:29 PM PDT

    So, I was just trying to scan my homework so I could turn it in. I pulled out my phone, opened google drive, scanned it, it seemed good in the preview, but then when I opened the document when it saved on my google drive, a large chunk of the bottom left of the document was missing.

    Did this happen to anyone else? If so, did you find a fix for it? I hate using Samsung notes to scan my documents so really need to find a fix for this.

    If I don't use any kind of lock on the lock screen, is there a way to add one without having to unlock it, go into settings, set it up, etc? Like an app I can use to add a button to the home screen that adds a pre set lock (like passcode, pattern, etc)

    [NEED HELP] facing random shutdowns/reboots in Redmi note 7

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:13 PM PDT

    So everything was fine,

    but after what I did:

    1. I unlocked the bootloader

    2. flashed custom recovery

    3. wipe and format and flash custom rom

    Problem: used for weeks, nothing, perfectly fine. but after 3 weeks whenever I opened a Youtube video or in a zoom meeting the system shutdowns/reboots.

    What I did to solve it: initially I thought I didn't flashed correctly (since no one with RN7 with PE+ faced this issue), so I

    • flashed fastboot stock rom, custom recovery, wipe and format, flashed latest firmware
    • and then flash the custom rom.

    unfortunately, problem was still there, so I changed to some other rom (evolution-x). again the problem is still there.

    so I flashed miui(global 12.0.1) now, updated to latest available rom (12.5). because I thought all this custom rom causing this. So going back to miui should solve it as it was before. but again the problem exist ! ! !

    any idea what i messed up ?

    How do I extract the Linux kernel from a vendor Android 4.2 installation?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 02:08 PM PDT

    I have an Asus Transformer AiO P1801-T. There seems to be very little information online about it. I am trying to get the kernel off of the device so I can install postmarketOS. Asus has the source code for the tablet's Linux kernel available, but I couldn't get it to compile without errors. I later learned that there can be discrepancies between different compiler versions. I was using the latest Android ARM compiler so that would explain my issues. There's no way I can contact Asus support and have them give me information on what compiler was used, and there is no information in the downloaded source. So, I have settled on trying to get the kernel off of the device. I have rooted it. I am fairly well versed in GNU/Linux but haven't really tried my hand at this type of thing in Android before.

    Here is the output of cat /proc/partitions:

    major minor #blocks name

    179 0 30539776 mmcblk0

    179 1 1048576 mmcblk0p1

    179 2 723968 mmcblk0p2

    179 3 2048 mmcblk0p3

    179 4 1097728 mmcblk0p4

    179 5 5120 mmcblk0p5

    179 6 512 mmcblk0p6

    179 7 5120 mmcblk0p7

    179 8 27614720 mmcblk0p8

    179 32 2048 mmcblk0boot1

    179 16 2048 mmcblk0boot0

    Android 4.2 doesn't have the Purpose column that appeared in later versions of Android, so it was up to me to guess which partition has the kernel.

    I used adb to create images of all of the partitions. Here are my findings:

    mmcblk0boot0 - binary data

    mmcblk0boot1 - binary data

    mmcblk0 - entire medium

    mmcblk0p1 - part of the android fs

    mmcblk0p2 - recovery, lost+found, and calendar data

    mmcblk0p3 - binary data

    mmcblk0p4 - ext3 - empty lost+found and nothing else

    mmcblk0p5 - MBR FAT32 - contains serial number and MAC addresses for WiFi and Bluetooth

    mmcblk0p6 - binary data

    mmcblk0p7 - binary data

    mmcblk0p8 - image got corrupted while creating it and not mountable

    None of the mountable partitions contained a zImage file or a boot.img file, or anything that signified a kernel.

    cat /proc/mounts also shows that there is no boot partition mounted:

    rootfs / rootfs ro,relatime 0 0

    tmpfs /dev tmpfs rw,nosuid,relatime,mode=755 0 0

    devpts /dev/pts devpts rw,relatime,mode=600 0 0

    proc /proc proc rw,relatime 0 0

    sysfs /sys sysfs rw,relatime 0 0

    debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs rw,relatime 0 0

    none /acct cgroup rw,relatime,cpuacct 0 0

    tmpfs /mnt/secure tmpfs rw,relatime,mode=700 0 0

    tmpfs /mnt/asec tmpfs rw,relatime,mode=755,gid=1000 0 0

    tmpfs /mnt/obb tmpfs rw,relatime,mode=755,gid=1000 0 0

    none /dev/cpuctl cgroup rw,relatime,cpu 0 0

    /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /system ext4 ro,relatime,user_xattr,acl,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0

    /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /cache ext4 rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,errors=panic,user_xattr,acl,barrier=1,nomblk_io_submit,data=ordered,discard 0 0

    /dev/block/mmcblk0p8 /data ext4 rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,errors=panic,user_xattr,acl,barrier=1,nomblk_io_submit,data=ordered,discard 0 0

    tmpfs /Removable tmpfs rw,relatime,mode=755,gid=1000 0 0

    /dev/fuse /mnt/shell/emulated fuse rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=1023,group_id=1023,default_permissions,allow_other 0 0

    I'm kind of a noob to this but as far as I'm aware mmcblk0p1 mmcblk0p2 and mmcblk0p8 are not going to contain the kernel.

    A directory listing of /dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name shows this:

    lrwxrwxrwx root root 2021-08-03 16:52 APP -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p1

    lrwxrwxrwx root root 2021-08-03 16:52 CAC -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p2

    lrwxrwxrwx root root 2021-08-03 16:52 CRA -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p7

    lrwxrwxrwx root root 2021-08-03 16:52 MSC -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p3

    lrwxrwxrwx root root 2021-08-03 16:52 PER -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p5

    lrwxrwxrwx root root 2021-08-03 16:52 UDA -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p8

    lrwxrwxrwx root root 2021-08-03 16:52 USP -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p4

    lrwxrwxrwx root root 2021-08-03 16:52 YTU -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p6

    I looked up some of these acronyms and I can't find any info about what they mean, but according to the postmarketOS wiki, they should tell me which partition I am looking for.

    There is no boot.img in the root directory either:

    drwxr-xr-x root system 2021-08-03 16:52 Removable

    I also found Flashify, which is supposed to allow me to back up the kernel image, but it freezes every time I click "Backup current kernel."

    I can try imaging mmcblk0p8 again but that is the largest partition and would take a really long time, and afaik doesn't contain the kernel.

    I am very much stuck here and don't know what else to try. Any help would be appreciated.

    How do you keep your kids safe on the internet when they are away from your wifi?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 09:13 AM PDT

    I have a friend who has young kids and is wanting to block their internet access to things like adult content. That is easy to do on the home router. But when they take their wifi-enabled devices to McDonalds or school, there is, of course, no filters there. Is there any way to restrict a device so that it can only connect to "trusted" routers or wifi is only turns on when at home or something like that? I was thinking that maybe DNS settings might work, but that has to be input per connection, doesn't it?

    For those of you with kids and connected devices, how do you keep them safe on the internet?

    Samsung A12 Not Charging

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 03:56 PM PDT

    I bought a Samsung A12 from amazon about 2 months ago and starting about a month ago, the phone didn't charge.

    The first time it happened I cleaned it and restarted the phone so many times and it started charging again.

    I thought that would be the end of it but it keeps on happening. The only solution to make it charge is by throwing it hard on the floor. But today it took 5 hard throws on the floor for it to charge.

    I don't know why it sometimes doesn't charge and why throwing it on the floor helps.

    Any suggestions?

    Rate limit notification sounds/vibration?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 03:35 PM PDT

    I've been wishing for this feature for years now. If an app sends a lot of notifications in a row, for example during a whatsapp conversation or SMS conversation, I want my phone to make a sound/vibrate only for the first notification in a certain stretch of time, eg 5 minutes, and any further notifications of the same sort from the same app in that 5 minutes will be silent.

    A long time ago someone said, in this subreddit perhaps, that this feature was coming in Android 11 (or was it 10?) but I can't find it - it appears to not exist.

    I don't want "do not disturb" because I do want to hear notifications, I just want to only hear the sound/vibrate once for a string of notifications close together. Unless "do not disturb" can do this??

    I don't want to root, I'm just interested if there is an Android native way to accomplish this. My phone is a Galaxy A52 - One UI 3.1 - Android 11.
