School said I can't have an AMD cpu for my programming course. I'd rather not buy a new cpu and mobo. Thoughts?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 02:31 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm taking a Computer IT diploma program starting this September. The school sent out the spec requirements for our computers and I was surprised to see that it was specifically stated NOT to have an AMD processor.

I've done a free programming course online before using C and Python and I've never had a problem using my current PC (Ryzen 5 1600).

Do I really need to buy a new CPU (which means I will also need a new MOBO)? I'd really rather not have to shell out more money on a new CPU and MOBO.

Will having an AMD CPU cause future issues with programming software?

Here are the software we are expecting to be using according to the orientation:

    • MS Office
    • MS Visual Studio
    • .Net
    • Java
    • Eclipse
    • Variety of Other programs

The computer labs at the school are currently using Windows, macOS, Linus, and UNIX operating systems.

    Thanks guys! Appreciate the help!

EDIT: Thank you everyone! As some of you have suggested, I think I'll just keep my current system and use the labs if I come across any hicups with AMD. Thank you again!

Is this a fake tube of Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut 1g ?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 01:34 PM PDT

I recently bought a tube of Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut 1g but It came in a black tube and I looked around and people are saying that the black tubes are fake.
I checked the code and it said it was real, I even went on the website to see if the place i bought it from (Megekko) was a official seller and it is, but im still skeptical and want to know for sure I wasn't scammed

    Gaming Chairs

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 03:32 PM PDT

Can anyone recommend an affordable gaming chair? I'm not a religious gamer so I just need something that's simple but comfortable.

    I'd probably say max $100-$120.

    Doubt about GPU

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 04:32 PM PDT

I am trying to build a pc. I want to buy a Nvidia rtx 2060, but I was reading some of the specs of that GPU, and it says it has a power consumption of 160 W and requires a minimum system power supply of 500 W.

what will happen if I supply less power than the mínimum of 500 W??

Is this legit advice: "Game a bit/benchmark before repasting so its easier to remove cooler"

"Game a bit/benchmark before repasting so its easier to remove cooler"

By common sense wont that just give me burns??

for reference: i have a 2200g mounted on a b450 atx motherboard using stock cooler.

    What's a good upgrade from a AMD FX-6300 CPU?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 03:36 PM PDT

I want to upgrade my old AMD FX-6300 to something better but i've never done an upgrade to my pc before. Specs:

    Mother Board: GA-78LMT-S2 R2

    GPU: Radeon RX 560 Series

    CPU: AMD FX-6300

From what i've read AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Processor might be a good choice as my mother board accepts AMD. I'm looking to play games like GW2 that are CPU intensive.

    Any suggestions?

Which motherboard is the best for the i7-10700k cpu?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 04:39 PM PDT

I am planning to use the i7-10700K CPU for an rtx 3080 once prices drop and I can't decide between these three boards:

    -ASUS TUF Gaming Z490-Plus (WIFI)

    -MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Plus

    -MSI MAG Z490 Tomahawk

Out of these three boards, which one is the best? Are there any other motherboards you recommend? I plan to do a little Overclocking if I am able to, but it is not terribly important to me.

SSD or HDD? And are the HDD still worth it in 2021?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 11:15 AM PDT

Are HDD still good to use in modern day technology? They are a lot cheaper than SSD and hold way more space but is it worth it? Don't get me wrong I would pick an SSD any day. But the one I want are out of stock and I don't want to send $200-300 for 1TB when the one I wanted was only $109. I saw the HDD 1TB for only $44 but I'm not sure if I should get it. How much slower does it run in compared to the SSD? I was thinking about getting a 500GB SSD and a 2TB HDD. Would having both be the best option?

Is 750W enough for my needs?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 11:40 AM PDT

I have a MSI 3080 and an i9 10850k. I want to heavily over clock this build but I have a 750 GT from EVGA. Thoughts on if this is enough wattage? (750w gold btw)

Edit: bought the 850w. Would probably be fine with a 750 but fuck it

    Laptop RAM

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 03:53 PM PDT

My laptop came with one SODIMM installed (8GB 3200MHz CL22) and one empty slot for a second. CL22? That seems to be standard for laptop RAM for some reason. I understand the power and cooling options are fewer and less with laptops, but this seems weak. I could get 1 identical SODIMM for about $45 and drop that alongside the existing one, or I could spring for some sexy Ballasitx in a 2x8GB at 3200MHx CL16. Worth the full upgrade? Are laptops just inherently slower and unable to take advantage of better specc'ed components?

I'm looking to use my old desktop parts (MOBO+CPU) to make a server box to play games like Minecraft, space engineers, maybe battlefield, and possibly plex. Anything really that I feel like hosting. I'm mainly looking for case recommendations (mid-tower/server rack box) and input on the ram and power supply. I currently have a NZXT h440 for my desktop and wouldn't be averse to using it for the server box if someone thinks it would be more worthwhile to upgrade my desktop case. Any input it welcome

Some things I've already noticed is that my ram will only run at a max of 2400 on the mobo, and I wanted to know if that would be a significant detriment.

    How do I monitor stuff?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 04:31 PM PDT

I feel like this is a pretty simple question and I'm just way too stupid to figure it out but how can I monitor what's going on in my PC? I see a lot of images on the internet of a bunch of graphs and circles that essentially show what's going on in your PC. It shows stuff like CPU temp, fan speed, CPU speed, etc.

So how do I access this? The only place I seem to be able to view this type of stuff is in my BIOS but I can't readily access that because as far as I know I can only view it when I start up my PC and hold down delete. So yeah, that is more or less it, how I can view this information about my PC? Is there some app I have to download? Some secret place in Windows that I can't find? A hotkey or something to quickly view my BIOS after it boots?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    What do I improve?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 04:21 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I have a prebuilt PC that I bought around 5 years ago. I am debating whether to build a new one from scratch, buy a new prebuilt one or upgrade my current PC. My specs are:

    Acer Predator G3-710

    Processor: Intel(R) core(TM) i5-6400 CPU @ 2.70GHz

    Manufacturer: Intel

    Speed: 3.3 GHz

    No. of cores: 4

    CPU ID: BFEBFBFF000506E3

    RAM: 8gb

Video card: AMD Radeon R9 360

    Dedicated memory: 2GB

    Total memory: 6GB

Pixel / vertex shader version: 5.1

    Windows 10.

I would prefer to upgrade my current PC but I am quite out of my depth in regards to what I should upgrade and if it will even fit my PC. Any help would be appreciated.

All my information I got from a software that analyses my specs and tells me what's what, sorry if it is formatted weird.

Edit: I am pretty good with other electronics I.E repairing my PS4 and it's controllers every so often, fixing monitors etc. but I have never tried to modify a computer. I am confident however that with a lot of research I would be able to do so. I think I need a new video card but again I am out of my depth. Thanks!

RAM or Motherboard problem. Which one?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 04:20 PM PDT

Backstory: Two months ago, I shipped my PC to another country. When I got it, part of the motherboard, near the RAM slots, is covered in Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut. I have no idea how it happened. The only explanation would be that it squeezed out from under the CPU cooler, but I find that extremely unlikely. I had to take out one of my RAM sticks, as it was covered in Thermal Grizzly. After cleaning off the RAM stick, it still doesn't work, in any motherboard slot. There are now remnants of Thermal Grizzly around/inside the RAM slots that I can't get out.

Ever since then, my PC has been experiencing rare, random crashes to desktop and lock screen, occasionally it runs into a error and needs to restart. The error codes I do get correlate to broken RAM. But I've scanned my RAM twice using the Windows Diagnostic Tool, and it says that no issues were found. My question is, is it the bits of Thermal Grizzly in my RAM slots (and potentially somewhere else on the motherboard) that are causing these crashes, or is it my remaining 8GB RAM stick?

    Additional Info:

The second RAM slot on the left, the one the now-not-working RAM stick was in, has some Thermal Grizzly in it. Every time I insert a RAM stick in, I pull it out with Thermal Grizzly on the same two pins, every time.

Apex Legend's graphics stutter often (more intense stuttering the longer the play session)

    Motherboard: Aorus B550 Pro AC

The issues aren't caused by overclocking RAM. The same issues occurred before I enabled XMP.

Do I need to buy a new motherboard? Is there some circuit on the motherboard I should check isn't short-circuited?

EDIT: How do I clean out the RAM slots if they are the problem?

    Is 3600 + 2060 good enough for 1440p or should I stick to 1080p?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 02:04 PM PDT

I saw a sweet deal on a PC that is only like $50 above MSRP (i put the stuff into pcpartpicker and set the 2060 to $400). Should I get a 1080p or 1440p monitor for this setup? I would like to play story-driven singleplayer games like RDR2 and HZD at max settings at 60+ fps I'm okay with lowering settings on more competitive games to get to 60 or 144 fps.

    Build Help/Ready:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming. Primarily Rocket League but I'd like to transition into PC gaming permanently.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Rocket League on ultra settings, 1080p, 120-140 FPS, 144hz monitor with 1 ms refresh rate. Once the GPU market cools down, I'd like to upgrade so that's why my PSU is 750+.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

How can i make my PC quieter?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 01:48 PM PDT

Around a month ago or so I build myself a new Rig, and although i don't feel as if the PC itself is loud at all I cant seem to ignore the noise it makes compared to my old setup even though its apparently 6db quieter, I've recently fitted a new CPU fan from the not so great stock AMD wraith fan and that seemed to help a bit but its still a little loud for my liking and unless I'm paranoid it wasn't a problem for me previously, I've thought about straight up replacing the 4 case fans with supposedly "quieter" options but even when the fans are off it still seems to be a bit loud, the case fans are all the 3pins in 4pin connectors however they're set to DC in the bios so they're not running max rpm constantly, however does anyone else have better suggestions?

    Build:

-NZXT H510 Case (4 NZXT Case fans (top/rear/x2front)

-AMD Ryzen 5 5600X (Be Quiet Pure rock2)

    -MSI GTX 1660 TI

    -M.2 SSD Drive 500GB SAMSUNG 980 PRO

-CORSAIR 750W RMx SERIES MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD, "ULTRA QUIET"

Advice on building a cheap PC for my dad's home office?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 03:51 PM PDT

I'm planning on building my dad a desktop to replace his laptop as it's been causing him a lot of headaches. He doesn't do anything intensive, just emails, makes spreadsheets for work, and occasional light web browsing. He wants something reliable and quiet. I have some spare parts that I plan to reuse, namely:

Intel i5-7400 (has an iGPU) and its cooler

    8GB DDR4 RAM

Unknown HP power supply (sticker on it says 300W max and bronze rated)

    Unknown HP motherboard

    HP Pavilion case

Decent spare keyboard, speakers, and monitor laying around

The CPU, RAM, power supply, and mobo are from an HP Pavilion Gaming PC. I don't know the specific model so I can't find any detailed info on it, other than the CPU that I happened to remember. To fill in the gaps, we plan to buy a Kingston A400 (240GB SSD, to use for the OS and some common apps) and a Logitech M100 (cheap mouse, looks good for basic use). Undecided on an HDD, just need something quiet, reliable, and cheap. He won't need a lot of storage space, anywhere between 250GB-1TB should do just fine. The SSD will do most of the heavy lifting, so speed doesn't matter much either as long it's not painfully slow. It will be running Linux, either Debian or Mint.

In short, I'm wondering if anyone knows how I can find out the specific model of the OEM. An HDD recommendation would be helpful because I don't know about them. Any other advice or recommendations are appreciated.

    New GPU, old PSU question

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 03:49 PM PDT

I got an unexpected upgrade, a RTX 3060 ti, but I have a rather old PSU with just 550w and just one pci cable with 2x 6+2 connectors. The card needs 2x8. I wanted to know if I'm ok, just one cable (I heard that just one cable was not ok) and just 550w (the calculators say it's ok but Nvidia recommends higher)?

The CPU is a Ryzen 5 3600 and the PSU a XFX TS 550w plus bronze and the GPU gigabyte RTX 3060ti OC with 3 fans.
