I hired someone to wire my house with CAT6a. This is how he wired the patch panel Posted: 15 Jul 2021 06:56 AM PDT I am renovating a place and decided to wire the place with shielded CAT6a (future proofing blah blah). I know I could have gone with CAT6 (I've only got 2 runs longer than 50m), but it's done. I went to have a look on the progress today and saw this. This is the patch panel. It doesn't look right. It definitely doesn't look like the many YouTube examples I've seen. How bad is it? Do you think it is usable? It's my first time using CAT6a so I would appreciate any advice. Thank you. Pictures in comments. Apollo doesn't let me post text with photos. Edit: haha wow guys. Thanks for confirming this is indeed the shitshow I thought it was. I bought the cable myself but I haven't paid the contractor yet. I don't think he is getting paid. Any idea if this can function like a cat6 cable? I can arrange to have a pro re-terminate everything at a later date. Or is this a complete write off? Edit 2: pics from below https://imgur.com/a/WlcuIBI/ [link] [comments] |
Help/advice on creating simple network Posted: 15 Jul 2021 08:09 PM PDT Hi all, I recently moved into a new apartment and am trying to resolve the slow WiFi we are currently experiencing. I've been reading through various posts and the beginner's pages, but would love to get confirmation from someone who knows more than I that I'm on the right track. Here is a link to the layout of the apartment. The internet cable/access point and the router (through Xfinity, Arris TG1682G) are located at the red circle in room 1. Room 1 has solid connection (100-200 mpbs download), but rooms 2, 3, and 4 all had poor connection (ie. hard to stream a video above 480p), and rooms 5,6,7 were barely able to surf the web. I bought a WiFi extender (TP-link AC750/RE22) and placed it at the green triangle. It has helped — rooms 2,3,4 now have speeds ~50-100 mbps download, but rooms 5 & 6 hover around 5-15 mpbs and 7 is less than that. My question is, in order to have WiFi comparable to Room 1 throughout the entire apartment, is my best bet to run an ethernet cable from the router in room 1, down the hall way, to a secondary "router" or wireless access point in a more central location? I wouldn't need to drill through walls or anything, I'd be happy just to run it along the edge of the walls/door frames the whole way. If that is the best approach, can anyone provide a recommendation in terms of the cable itself as well as the secondary "router"/wireless access point? I hope this explanation is clear and sufficient and I apologize in advance for any incorrectly used terms. Any help would be appreciated and I'm more than happy to answer additional questions. Certain Devices wont connect to router AX56-U Posted: 15 Jul 2021 07:54 PM PDT So I have an Asus router, model AX56-U, and it works perfectly fine with Xbox One X, iPhones, and laptop. For some reason however, I cant connect a PS4 and TV (for Netflix). I've tried messing with the Security protocol (changing from wpa3, wpa 2/3, wpa2), broadcast strength, seperating network antennas, , toggling Optimize for Xbox setting, toggling QoS; but nada. Would anyone happen to be familiar with this model router? My tv is about 3 years old, and the PS4 flashes a sign that it is incompatible with network security. [link] [comments] |
Is it "normal" to have T3/T4 timeouts throughout the day? Posted: 15 Jul 2021 07:38 PM PDT A few weeks ago I decided to upgrade my internet speeds to 1Gbps (not fiber, fwiw). Almost immediately after I realized that my modem doesn't support those speeds, so I started looking into my ISPs approved modem list and also discovered the Puma chipset issue which affected my modem so I figured this is definitely the time to upgrade. Initially, I went with the Motorola MB8600. Almost immediately I started noticing that our internet was suffering disconnects for 10 minutes or so at a time. Hopped on a chat earlier last week and they sent a signal refresh which improved nothing. So I started looking into the event logs and noticed a ton of T3/T4 disconnects (5+/hr). Got on a chat again earlier today and asked if I could have a tech come out and help me and was told it'd cost $50 if the tech determines the issue wasn't coming from them. So I figured I'd do a bit more research and thought I'd try a different modem, so I went and bought the Arris SB8200. It's only been set up for a few hours and we haven't lost internet (yet) but there's still quite a few T3 disconnects in the event log, is it just normal to have these throughout the day? Upstream channels: https://i.imgur.com/dLhJpwc.png Downstream channels: https://i.imgur.com/kjbXWeg.png Event log from the past 2 hours: https://i.imgur.com/n2OAgKs.png I have a Unifi USG, PoE Switch and AP to go with the modem, so I'm fairly confident the connection drops aren't on my end, but I really want to make sure I cover all my bases before I have a tech come out. No splitter or anything on the coax cable, goes straight from the line outside to my modem. And lastly, for whatever it's worth, when I run speed tests with ethernet connected devices, I don't get anywhere near the 1Gbps - I average about 350Mbps. Not sure if that is a sign of anything else, but figured I'd throw it out too. Oh, and my ISP is Wow. [link] [comments] |
Will Outdoor WiFi Extender interfere with the Mesh system used inside? Posted: 15 Jul 2021 03:06 PM PDT I'm in Australia and I have a home wi-fi system that we have installed a Mesh system on. The mesh system has greatly improved the quality and speed of our home wifi, with us enjoying about 40mbps download rate.My son's bedroom is in a detached converted garage outside and he connects via this Mesh system (that is in the main house) and gets about 27 mbps which doesnt allow him to play online games without experiencing lag and connection problems at times. I have purchased a Wavlink AC1200 High Powered Outdoor wifi extender and I want to install this to make his wifi better. I am concerned though that it might impact negatively on the speed that we enjoy through the Mesh system in the house.Will it? Thank you to any advice given :) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 15 Jul 2021 08:18 PM PDT Hello all, I just recently ordered the 300GB plan and was wondering if they've fixed the issues that seemed to plague them the last couple months. I ordered it because I love to game online and it seemed like one of the few options since satellite definitely didn't pan out like I hoped it would. Any feedback would be appreciated as I still have the 14 days to get my money back. If it helps I Got the rural plan and we live about 5-6 miles away from both a t mobile and Verizon tower. Question(s) on Cat5e vs Cat 6 Ethernet cables Posted: 15 Jul 2021 12:09 PM PDT Hi everyone, This is my first post here, so I'd appreciate some feedback/help. Background: I am on Spectrum for cable, Internet and voice in the NYC area. The last couple of days, I had technicians over to help solve issues I had with Internet service, where, when I would go onto my laptop, I wouldn't be able to access the Internet instantly - I had to wait a good five minutes, due to the fact that the modem would periodically "time out". When the modem would be back up again, I would be connected both wired and wirelessly. Long story short, they did some reconfiguring and swapped out both of the Spectrum-dedicated modem and router as well. Now, I'm able to access the Internet instantly, but I have a different issue: When conducting a speed test while hard-wired, I'm only getting 13-15 mbps download speeds, and 11 mbps upload speeds. My plan goes up to 200 mbps, so obviously that's extremely low. While still hardwired, if I connect to the WiFi, I get over 200 mbps download speeds. I've been getting the runaround from Spectrum, telling me that things are good on their end, and that the problem could be with the Ethernet port on my laptop (2016 HP w/ Win 10). I then called my local repair guy and he told me that it's doubtful that it's the Ethernet port. As such, I don't know what to do/believe. For reference, I'm currently using two, yellow Cat5e Ethernet cables. One is connected between the modem and router, while the other is connected from the Ethernet port on my laptop to the router. How do I check to see if the Ethernet port on my laptop is working properly? Is there something I have to do in the settings on the laptop to configure it a certain way? The cable that is connected between the modem and router is the shortest. The Ethernet light on the modem is orange/amber, while on the router, the end that is connected to the "Internet" port on it is solid green and fast-blinking amber. So, does this mean I should switch the cable out, or is that the way it's supposed to be? If I do have to switch it out, should I go with a new Cat5e Ethernet cable, or can I use a Cat6? I just find it really weird that my download speeds are this slow, yet all I can get out of Spectrum is to just use WiFi. Yet when I try to download .mp3 or FLAC files to load onto my phone, it takes forever - it didn't before. Apologies for the long post, and thanks in advance for the help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Jul 2021 05:59 PM PDT First, this issue involves Foobar2000 and I have not found a similar issue on the F2K forums. I think it must be a network or hardware issue. Streaming my music from my NAS is a wonderful thing, except when it doesn't work! The issue is erratic and I never really figure out what causes the problem. My hardware is a WD MyBook USB connected to a Buffalo LinkStation as expansion. I just updated my router to a TP-Link Archer C7. I access my music library over WIFI. Today I tried to connect the MyBook directly to the router USB, bypassing the LinkStation, but it was not recognized. Symptoms are Foobar stuttering, or skipping to the next song. Errors I get include: Unable to open item for playback (Network not reachable), network path not found, etc.. The file are very accessible through File Explorer, and populate the Music Library in Foobar as expected. I have two PCs on the network that act in the same way. Sometimes if I reset all the components in the chain, it will resolve. Other times, it doesn't help at all. It's really frustrating. Is there a router setting that will provide a consistent connection to my drive? [link] [comments] |
Will Archer A7 have seamless roaming with an Omada Access Point? Posted: 15 Jul 2021 02:13 PM PDT I currently have an A7 router. All is well except in the edges of my house I have a weak signal. I'd like to get an access point at the edge of my house (connected via wired ethernet backhaul), but I don't know if seamless roaming/handoff will happen between something like the EAP235-wall AP and an A7 router. What if I also bought an OC200, would that help? Or is it a requirement for me to get an Omada router? I was planning on getting a PoE injector to power the AP. [link] [comments] |
Low Speeds but High Speed Test Posted: 15 Jul 2021 05:51 PM PDT Hi everyone, At the risk of sounding completely clueless, I am deciding to post here about my internet issues. We have a pretty good gigabit internet package, and our speedtests consistently run high. However, every website and app that uses internet on all of the devices in our house is running incredibly slow to load. This just started a few days ago, and I'm not sure why if speedtests are saying we are running fast internet. I called Xfinity today, and they were completely useless in helping solve the issue. All my tests were done through a ethernet wired PC. [link] [comments] |
Where can I buy connector boots for the flat rj45 Ethernet cables? Posted: 15 Jul 2021 05:33 PM PDT Should I just use shrink tube to cover the exposed bits? I feel kind of silly for assuming I could replace the connectors on the flat cables as easily as the round ones. Should I give up on these flat cables? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Jul 2021 05:31 PM PDT So I have been holding out using IOTs and usually just get from (relatively) trusted brands like Apple, but I am wondering if I can use some unknown brand IOTs and just keep it in a secure network. I am no expert and don't know how to make sure they don't send out data to their overlords. I read many comments about just using a guest network, but I assume I cannot control them unless I am in the guest network myself. I read about Bit Defender Box and Trend Micro HNS and wonder if that is the solution. I am also curious if the VPN that comes with it allows me to access regional material say for Netflix etc. Or is this setup overkill? I do want to protect my network and data (not just the IOT threat) so that is the benefit as well. [link] [comments] |

Possible Wifi adapter failure. Posted: 15 Jul 2021 12:54 PM PDT Hello so I am having an issue with using the internet on my PC I can connect to the network but nothing that requires internet will work and all my other devices work fine on the wifi. [link] [comments] |
WiFi router is in the worst place in home. Posted: 15 Jul 2021 04:03 PM PDT My current router, which is a TP link AX3000, is where my modem line comes in in my den. This is on the other side of the house from the bedrooms and my gaming set up which is upstairs. On top of that behind the router between it and the rest of the house is a stacked washing machine and dryer and a brick wall. So I am thinking about a mesh solution where I can set up either a point across the house in the bed rooms or living room and possibly one upstairs as well. I was leaning towards the Netgear Orbi since I could plug my systems and smart TV into the satellite upstairs. For my computer I have a long ethernet cable that I can plug into either the main router or modem so it is not an issue. [link] [comments] |

Having Issues With Ethernet Connection Posted: 15 Jul 2021 02:19 PM PDT Hey everyone, The Setup: I have my Desktop connected to my room wall Ethernet port via a Cat6 Ethernet cable. The Ethernet runs from the the room walls to the master bedroom and ultimately connects into the router we use. The router is: BGW210-700 from AT&T. I believe the cable running through the walls is CAT5e. My motherboard is the MAG Z390 Tomahawk. The Problem: On my desktop, my speeds cap out at 93-100 Mbps. If I use the WiFi PCIE card I bought it reaches around 800 Mbps. On the desktop in another room (connected via Ethernet to the wall), the speeds reach what we pay for, around 800 Mbps. On WiFi, my desktop and almost all other devices in the house can reach around 800 Mbps. Why is my desktop the only one that cant exceed 93-100 Mbps? Additional Info: The Ethernet says it is connected to my desktop via "Intel(R) I211 Gigabit Network Connection" What I Have Tried:
Any help would be tremendously appreciated! The issue with just using the WiFi card I bought is that it;

Posted: 15 Jul 2021 02:18 PM PDT In my house, I have a network switch called Netgear JGS516(with several ethernet cables attached to it). Would it be possible to just replace the network switch with a newer model? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Jul 2021 02:07 PM PDT For some reason when my smart TV turns on, regardless of whether it's doing absolutely nothing, every device on my network just can't gets the worst connection know to man. My ring just disconnects from the internet if it's on 5G. The TV is connected via 5G and isn't physically directly blocking a path to other devices but my house layout is layered from the rear(garage) to the living room(TV) to the kitchen then dining room that next to my front door. It's so bad that even my 2.4ghz band just takes a poop and drops constantly. Is there like a setting in my router to prevent something like this or do I gotta find a better spot for my router [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Jul 2021 02:01 PM PDT Could a wall Ethernet port limit my connection? Like I have my router in my garage connected to the wall and from there I connect my PC at another outlet on the second floor. I'm supposed to be getting 400 down but I can't manage past 80-90. I suspected the wall outlets are connected with some trash 100mbit cat cables. Both my router and PC are connected to the wall via 5e so 1Gbit should be expected right? Maybe one of those wires is bad? [link] [comments] |
Unmanaged PoE Switch recommendations Posted: 15 Jul 2021 01:55 PM PDT Hey guys, I need recommendations for which network switch will suit my needs. My budget is $300. I need at least 8 PoE switches for IP cameras, and AP's. I need 16 Gigabit ports. I've found the Cisco SG200-26P, Netgear JGS524PE, and D-Link DGS-1100-24PV2 switches but they are managed, and I don't think I need a managed switch, and I don't know how to configure a managed switch. My other option is making me lead into getting 2 separate switches such as an 8 port PoE netgear GS108LP ($80), and a TP-Link TL-SG116 ($50) or Netgear GS316 ($60). These are unmanaged and very under my budget. TLDR: I'm not sure if I should get a big managed switch that I don't know how to use fully, or 2 separate unmanaged switches. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
