Anyone know of a good tool for drawing out a home network? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 08:01 AM PDT I've got quite a large home network (by my own standards) comprising of four switches and quite a few connected devices. Due to an extension build this will be growing by another couple of switches and I would love to do a basic diagram of the network. I don't have firewalls and segregation etc. It's literally just the internet coming it, going through a router and back to a large 24 port switch and then sent off to a few other smaller 8 port switches and distributed that way. I want to be able (ideally) to specify what device is connected to each port of the switch (i.e. not just a switch icon with a single line splitting off to lots of devices) Not sure if there is anything like that out there? It would be good if there was some simple free tool but I also have access to the full Microsoft suite through work if there's anything in there that can do it? Thanks :-) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Jul 2021 05:06 PM PDT Picked up some NETGEAR hardware to revamp my home network. Spent like an hour and a half trying to do figure out why only one device was getting internet. Gave up and called support. After two transfers, I got to the right department. I described my situation and he found the problem literally instantly. (I plugged modem>switch>router instead of modem>router>switch.) he then walked me through router setup (even though that wasn't his department, I was in switches) and kept me on the line till I was 100% up and running. Shoutout to that guy :) [link] [comments] |
How much of a real world difference is there between LAN and wifi in the real world? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 07:54 PM PDT As the title States, I've both connected my computer via LAN and wifi 5GHz but don't really see much of a difference other than the fact that LAN is at most 3 milliseconds faster (sometimes none) during a wifi speed test. Download speeds and upload speeds are identical around 100Mbps. During normal use like web browsing, group video calls, 4k video playback no difference. It could be that my wifi router is only 5 meters away from my room, but I just ask this because the general advice is that cabled LAN is always better as it's more reliable and faster than wifi but in my usage there is virtually no difference at all. Is there something technical or behind the hood that I'm missing here? or that my usage just don't take advantage of the benefits of LAN. Just curious that's all. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 16 Jul 2021 07:34 PM PDT So I have a Synology DS1621 with all four ports connected to my switch in link aggregation. I have tested and do get one gig speeds when more than one client is transferring at the same time, great. This is all working through a Netgear GS724 switch. I am wondering if I was to get a PCI Ethernet card for my PC, with multiple Ethernet ports (looking at the four port) would I be able to boost the speed past gigabit. In other words, would I be able to transfer something from a PC with four connections to the Nas with four connections, making it transfer at 4x the speed. Is that how it works? Or am I dead wrong and need to do something else for that to work? Thank you in advance, I appreciate it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Jul 2021 07:30 PM PDT We are a family of four with around 70 devices and I'm sure we will add more. Most are smart plugs, smart bulbs, and smart speakers but a handful of thermostats and phones/tablets too. It's an Apple HomeKit house! The internet we have is 400mbps download and 10mbps upload. We have a single level 1700ft2 rectangle shaped house and the only AP is in the center (thankfully it's not on one side or the other). I was seriously considering the [Netgear Orbi AX4200](NETGEAR Orbi Whole Home Tri-band Mesh WiFi 6 System (RBK752) – Router with 1 Satellite Extender | Coverage up to 5,000 sq. ft. and 40+ Devices | AX4200 (Up to 4.2Gbps) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086HJXKJJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_9670CSW3ZT33JMF0TP41?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) but in some places I read 40 device limit and others 250 device limit so I'm just not sure. Also, if you can recommend a modem as well, or modem/router combo that would be good because the one I have from the ISP can't act as a bridge. For budget, as much as I would love to keep it under $200 I suspect I'm going to spend closer to $400. [link] [comments] |
About to sign a new, 2 year contract with ISP and unsure if upgrade will be worth it Posted: 16 Jul 2021 05:02 PM PDT Hi! On 29th I'll be getting fiber installed from Orange Europe, instead of shitty local coaxial connection. I thought that I'll be fine with 600/100 for 75PLN/month, but I'm thinking about upping it to 1G/300 for 85PLN/month. I've got few services hosted, including media server which my friends use, Minecraft, VPN (planning to migrate from OpenVPN on pfSense to Wireguard on OpenWRT), HomeAssistant. So I think with 300Mb/s up I could even have reliable VNC connection at let's say, 1600x900 resolution. For firewall I'll be using Pine64 RockPro64 4/32GB with Intel I340-T4 running OpenWRT. Proper VLAN tagging, snort/suricata, wireguard etc., and my AP is a Ubiquiti AP-AC-Lite (probably will get some cheap separate one for IoT devices). Upgrade to 1Gb/300Mb. Yay or nay? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 08:21 PM PDT I want to wire ethernet connection to my computer from my router which is located in my living room to my computer room. My guess be that there is a 20-30 foot difference for the whole area. I thought about moving the router to my computer room but I don't think it would be good for house-wide connection and also don't have a coax cable to connect to in there. I have no idea how to wire it without creating a mess and was wondering if anyone might have any advice. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
I need help with my internet and gaming systems Posted: 16 Jul 2021 08:19 PM PDT So I am trying to play on my ps5 but it says I have a strict nat type and theres a double nat. I go to many websites and it says I have a double nat because there is two routers but as far as I know theres only one router. We have a satellite outside and a cable that runs from there inside to our smart rg router. but it says i have a double nat and i dont know how to fix it. I tried calling my isp and there was no answer so I had to leave a message. Anything I can do? [link] [comments] |
Are dual band or triband routers better as a node for mesh systems? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 02:10 AM PDT Does triband nodes help to minimise ping spikes and lagging since there is a 2nd dedicated 5ghz band for wireless backhaul and this frees up the other 5ghz band for connections? My node seems to be having alot of sudden ping spikes when I'm playing Internet games. I was wondering if it's because it's a dual band being connected to my triband main router. [link] [comments] |
My devices are not connecting? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 06:30 PM PDT Sorry if this is not the right place to ask! Recently the wifi in my house has been completely useless. When connecting just 1 week ago more than 4 devices plus the TV was on it and everything was working smoothly and fast. Then we changed the modem to a different spot in the house. All of a sudden nothing connects. It first started out with when you watch Netflix or youtube on the tv it would make it very slow for the other devices (which never happened before). Then just connecting devices without the TV turned on worked. But then it stopped. Now when you connected it says networks not available. We talk to the internet provider and they say everything looks fine and that they even zapped the box to restart it. Then they told us only three devices could be on it. This makes zero sense because it's the same plan we had before and they never notified us of changes and the first time we called they said everything is the same. Fast forward to now you still can not connect to more than 1 device. If more is connected the whole wifi shuts out and stops working. we also moved it back to its original place. Is there a reason why it's not connecting all of our devices anymore? [link] [comments] |
Really Confused, Can I plug ethernet from the wall straight into the router?(wall->switch->router) Posted: 16 Jul 2021 05:34 PM PDT Hey so, installing internet is just something I haven't been able to get my head around no matter what. The situation is that I have a modem in my basement(AT&T guy said this was the only place we could put it since upgrading to fiber) now this covers the rest of the house once we added a wifi extender. We have this space above our garage that is very far from the modem and extender that I want to add stronger wifi to. Up there, I have my desktop hooked up via ethernet to a switch that is hooked up to an ethernet outlet. Can I just plug a router into the switch because I don't see how I am supposed to get wifi up there? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Jul 2021 05:14 PM PDT Can I get hacked just by the router Mac address? Could it be dangerous if someone else finds out my router's Mac address by mistake? I am writing because I am anxious about everything because of a severe anxiety disorder. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Jul 2021 03:29 AM PDT Just took a networking class at uni but I can't understand why my wireless speeds are so poor. I knew wireless was going to be slow but I didn't expect abysmal performance. From t Over ethernet I'm able to get 800 Mbps on my laptop. But merely standing four feet away I'm only able to get 20 Mbps on the Speedtest app on an iPhone 7+. Using a Linksys EA6350 if it helps [link] [comments] |
My computer will not connect to my wireless connection. Please help! Posted: 16 Jul 2021 04:53 PM PDT Today I tried logging on my computer like usual but it would not connect to my wireless internet connection. Every other device will connect to the WiFi perfectly. I figured out that it might be a wireless adapter that's causing the issue but when I go to device manger and disable and reenable all of my adapters it still doesn't work. I even tried the hidden adapters and no luck. Switching to a wired connection isn't available for me long term but I can do it for a bit if I really need to. For reference I use windows 10 on a hp omen 30l prebuilt gaming desktop but I recently added a aio cooler to it. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Jul 2021 04:14 PM PDT Hello all, I just recently ordered the 300GB plan and was wondering if they've fixed the issues that seemed to plague them the last couple months. I ordered it because I love to game online and it seemed like one of the few options since satellite definitely didn't pan out like I hoped it would. Any feedback would be appreciated as I still have the 14 days to get my money back. If it helps I Got the rural plan and we live about 5-6 miles away from both a t mobile and Verizon tower. How can some network probes have a destination of my internal Network IPs? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 08:16 AM PDT Asked this in another thread, but didn't get a satisfying answer. So, basically as I read my UDM pro log, I frequently spot messages like this: Jul 16 15:10:11 UDM-Pro user.warn kernel: [105576.153740] TOR BLOCK: IN=eth8 OUT=br0 MAC=REDACTED SRC=37.228.129.2 DST=192.168.1.59 What I don't get is that how can the destination be an IP that the outside source can not be aware of in any way? That IP happens to be a Unifi switch in my network. I have an UDM pro, with a small internal network. No ports open, no upnp obviously, pretty much a fresh install with no adjustments etc, but for some reason these still pop up. I'm a newbie on networking and wish to understand how all of this is works. I thought I did, but this baffles me. [link] [comments] |
Best WiFi receiver for my PC in basement? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 03:45 PM PDT I'm moving soon to a new apartment and it's in the basement of the building. The place has WiFi but the router is upstairs. I'm really concerned about internet speed in the basement. My motherboard came with a little WiFi receiver antenna that screws into the back of the board. But I don't know if that will be good/strong enough to get me good speeds and latency. Is there a stronger WiFi antenna or something I can buy? My motherboard is the Asus ROG Crosshair VI Extreme (X370). https://rog.asus.com/us/motherboards/rog-crosshair/rog-crosshair-vi-extreme-model/ [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Jul 2021 03:39 PM PDT Hello, I have two questions. I recently purchased two new net gear wifi 6 routers, one with the purpose of being an AP. I currently have two routers, one in my house and one in my garage. I was going to put the two new WiFi 6 routers in my house and the two old WiFi 5 routers in my garage. My first question is if it would be worthwhile to have one wifi 6 router in each building. My second question is how I should format the network. The garage WiFi is currently a subnetwork, but I was wondering if there would be a benefit to formatting it Lan-Lan. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Jul 2021 11:17 AM PDT Hello! I recently bought a Cat6 cable to get my internet speed to 1 Gbps and I have the wires connected in the following order: Modem --Cat6--> Router --Cat6--> PC. (everything is gigabit compatible) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Jul 2021 02:50 PM PDT Recently got fiber and an ASUS RT-AX86U router. IPv6 only seems to work with passthrough mode. Is it ok to use passthrough if it's working? I contacted my ISP but they weren't much help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Jul 2021 02:44 PM PDT I recently moved house to an area that only supports OFNL. I've found a potential ISP and they offer two routers, a 'standard' and an 'advanced' router, £36 and £69 respectively. I've asked about the difference but the online support was quite vague and recommended the advanced one. Any advice on which one i should buy? My household is fairly small and the heavy internet will be via ethernet cable, with the other 3-4 devices using wifi to stream 1080p videos/light gaming. The package I will purchase is 160mbs download, 30mbs upload. Thanks. Standard: https://www.mercusys.com/en/product/details/ac12g [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Jul 2021 02:38 PM PDT Long story short, I want to install a PoE camera in part of my house where getting ethernet run there is going to be a huge pain in the butt. Eventually I'll get around to it but in the mean time I'd still like to run my camera, which needs both power and data from the wire. Now there are tons of options for wifi bridges for data, and tons of options for PoE injectors for power. But does anybody sell a single device that does both? For the life of me I can't find one, although the use case seems pretty reasonable to me. I understand that I could buy one of each and hook them together, but a single device would give me a cleaner look. Does anyone know of one? [link] [comments] |
My Motherboard Has The Intel I225-V Ethernet Controller, Should I Be Worried? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 10:25 AM PDT A while back ago, I had bought a Gigabyte Z-490 Aorus Pro AX motherboard second hand for my main PC, and it has so far worked without issue, despite the Intel I225-V Ethernet Controller. Lately, I had been changing some things with my home network, causing me to wonder about this ethernet controller. My questions are as follows:
If it matters, the rest of my network is a Linksys MR 6350 router and an ARRIS SB 8200 modem connected to a Spectrum 400MBit/s cable internet service. Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give! Edit: Turns out it is indeed the notorious revision 1 of the I225-V. [link] [comments] |
