Class needs 6-8 Laptops; Budget is under $2,000 Posted: 13 Jul 2021 03:56 PM PDT Heya! I've recently been hired to teach kids on how to code things on a computer starting September, which is really exciting for me! Problem is, we don't have computers. The computers I'm looking to get need to handle games such as Roblox decently, as well as maybe a few other coding programs like Unity. (Not the 3D type stuff like Blender. More like 2D, like RPG Maker) The programs I'm (hoping) to get on it is Roblox (Plus the Studio for them to make their own games) and Unity for 2D. Basically, something that can hold and run a fair bit of programs (6 maximum, unless I'm indecisive.) I'm looking for laptops that, when bought together won't go over $1,500. The maximum I think we'll go is $1,700. Hopefully ones that fall into the $240 - $300 can do good. I know I won't get exactly what I want, but I want the best this little tight budget can get. Various recommendations are very encouraged, so that I can sift and choose the right one. TL;DR : Looking for laptop under $300 that can hold programs for coding. [link] [comments] |

Form doesn't matter. Build quality should be sturdy enough for a couple of years at least. Performance is main consideration. Battery life is irrelevant.

How do you people decide between ThinkPad and M1 Macbook? Posted: 14 Jul 2021 02:23 AM PDT Well on one side it is a sort of DIY upgrade/repair project with robust build and long lasting relationship against the ones that are redefining computing with extremely efficient and performance packed laptops but with caveats like apple walled garden. How do you see this dilemma? Please share your thoughts. Thanks for your inputs. [link] [comments] |
Should I get a macbook air or pro? Posted: 14 Jul 2021 02:14 AM PDT Hiya! So I am starting college soon and I am a computer science major. Most of the side projects I do involve data work. I code in R, look at dataset from data bases and play around with that data to find patterns or something meaningful. I will also be doing some ML work. I want something that will work fast, last a long time and is a bit affordable. I can go up to 1200USD to buy a laptop for college but I was hoping to find something more affordable in my tasks in the windows category. I can get a new laptop with my own cash which is way more expensive later. I am also wondering what discounts i could on apple on my student account and through black friday. Any advice? thanks! Budget gaming laptop (under $1000 USD) with a good screen? Posted: 14 Jul 2021 12:11 AM PDT Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Under $1000, but willing to go a few hundred over in some cases. Are you open to refurbs/used? Not really, I'd prefer a new laptop, but if it's a good deal on a refurbished one I'll take it. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I'm a longtime Mac user and I like the minimalistic look and the screen of my MacBook Air. I've realized that the most important to me would be the screen quality, especially brightness. If a game is going to look dull I already know I'll enjoy it less. I'd even go for less RAM or a worse GPU/CPU if it meant I could have a nicer screen with higher nits. Unfortunately for me gaming laptops usually lean in the other direction (prioritizing strictly performance over display). Maybe my view of it is distorted, but seeing that my school chrome book has comparable brightness to some of the budget laptops scared me lol. Battery doesn't matter much, I doubt I'll be traveling with it at all. How important is weight and thinness to you? It'll be home most of the time, so not very important. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'm used to my 13.3" laptop, but I think 15"-16" would be my preferred option for gaming. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Games: - Terraria - Stardew Valley - CK3 - FIFA 20 - CSGO Possibly some Rust, Assassins Creed, GTA V, and Battlefield, but that isn't necessary. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I guess over 60 FPS would be preferred, I think that's manageable for most laptops with the 5 main games I listed. The other 4 would probably be a problem for an under $1000 laptop (which I accept). I'd probably play on medium or high graphics. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? The fingerprint reader would be nice, but not necessary. I don't need a touch screen or a particularly good keyboard, I still have the Mac for regular stuff like typing or researching. I'll probably be using an external mouse, so as long as the trackpad and the general construction isn't super janky I'm fine with just that. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm very new to gaming and have no experience with Windows computers, so a lot of the stuff like VR compatibility (not that interested) or a ton of ports and other things that may be selling points for experienced people don't really sway me very much, those aren't a big part of my decision. I also don't want to spend a ton of money on the laptop because I don't know how my gaming hobby will pan out, I'd hate to lose interest after a few months after spending a lot of money on it. Overall, I just want a laptop that'll be enough to support the games I like with a colorful and bright screen (I'd like it to be over 300 nits if possible). It's hard to get measurements of things like that and I've tried notebookcheck.net to compared display/color quality, but it gets messy quickly and I don't know what decision to make anymore. I guess I'm looking for a unicorn lol. These were the last computers I considered, if you have any different suggestions or any critique it's greatly appreciated (maybe Amazon isn't the best place to look for laptops on second thought lol). Thanks everybody. 2019 Lenovo IdeaPad L340 15.6" FHD for $857 Lenovo Legion Y540 15.6" 144Hz FHD for $999 - top contender at the moment I think MSI GF63 Thin 9RCX -615 15.6" for $900 [link] [comments] |

Lenovo Legion 5 (Ryzen 5 + RTX 3060) vs Macbook Air M1 Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:33 AM PDT
Hello everyone. I'm looking for a new laptop since my old one is almost dead and im having a really hard time choosing one. I never had any macbook before and with the new m1 macbooks im starting to lean into MacOS. Thing is my budget is limited to 1200$ and im afraid the 8GB/256gb won't be enough for me in the long run since the ram and storage are not expendable on the macbook. However with the legion not only it is expendable but it has an RTX 3060 at 130W which is better than almost all other laptops with RTX GPUs, coupled with a Ryzen 5 CPU. For now i dont have time to play games with work and other stuff but you never know maybe if i buy a gaming laptop i ll start playing again, any suggestions guys ? [link] [comments] |
Best budget laptop for coding and general use UK Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:18 AM PDT Hi all, I am a UK based Analyst and I want to get my python and r skills up to par. I am currently using a Lenovo G50-70 i3 piece of kit that has seen better days. I'm not going to be coding for web design or any hard core graphics. So it doesn't have to be super powerful! And it will mostly be for general use. My budget is around £500. I am torn between ASUS VivoBook X513EA 15.6" Laptop - Intel® Core™ i5, 256 GB SSD, Black And ACER Aspire 5 A514-53 14" Laptop - Intel® Core™ i5, 256 GB SSD, Silver Any other suggestions or help would be much appreciated!!! Just a casual laptop for a sibling about to enter college (non-engineering) under approximately $750 Posted: 14 Jul 2021 02:30 AM PDT * Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase: up to 2800 Saudi Rial, Saudi Arabia (the person about to purchase it lives in that country, I myself lives in the Philippines) * Are you open to refurbs/used? nope * How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life? Build quality > Performance > Battery Life > Form Factor * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" to 15", but it really doesn't matter * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. no CAD, slight photo and video editing, and light gaming * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I really only play Terraria but if possible, the highest possible settings (but not resolution) with consistent 60 FPS * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? just a good keyboard and a facecam though the cam does not need to be very good * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. this may seem awkward but they would prefer to buy the laptop in a Saudi e-commerce site called Jarir Bookstore, AND they would much prefer to buy it physically in a mall or something. what you suggest may not be available for them due to these reasons, but I'll try my best to convince them to be more lenient they can wait for a few months before purchasing so if there is a model worth waiting for, please inform me. Recommended Laptop for Battery Life? Posted: 13 Jul 2021 09:01 AM PDT I am thinking of upgrading my laptop, partly because its battery life is pretty poor (~4 hours of normal productivity use). Can anyone recommend me 13" or 14" laptops that could supply 8+ hours of productivity use (i.e., web browsing of around five tabs + one or two MS office applications)? I don't do video/photo editing at all. I don't run middle- or high-end games either so a graphics card is really not that important. Windows Hello, optical drives, SD card slots, etc. isn't necessary either, though I'd like to have at least two Thunderbolt ports. My only other requirement that it must have a good build quality, for instance, having little screen/chassis flex; preferably passing durability tests like MIL-STD but that is optional. High thermal temperatures are acceptable as long as they won't impact the battery life. Assuming unlimited budget. Not taking used or refurbs. EDIT not open to MacBooks. Couldn't get used to the OS. No Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Hey guys, I am on the hunt for a new laptop with a good webcam, storage and for me to occasionally play world of warcraft. I am also a University student, so I would also need the laptop to use Microsoft Office. I currently have a lenovo, which has a shitty webcam which looks like a CCTV camera and makes it difficult to attend online meetings with lecturers. I also struggle with storage space too and my current laptop just about runs world of warcraft, but unfortunately freezes when trying to use other applications. I've come m ss the following laptops, but I don't really know much about laptops and what to look for. Please could I have some advice ? Thank you I'm advance! [link] [comments] |
HP Envy 14 or Asus ZenBook 14 for Business School. Posted: 14 Jul 2021 01:30 AM PDT What I feel is written in the last question of this form, please check that as well, thank you.
Around 100,000 INR or 1350 USD, though in India taxes are high compared to the US, so maybe suggest like 1200 USD-ish laptop (idk)
No, I would prefer New ones.
Build Quality > Battery > Thin & Light > Performance
Thickness and weight are important since I will be carrying this laptop most of the time, in my Uni.
14 inches or maybe 15 inches will be fine since 13-inch laptops' palms rest are small for my hands. (MBA M1 is fine, but I don't want to live a dongle life and need decent port selection, so I am avoiding MACs)
I will not be running any graphics-intensive software or game but may do some light gaming or play e-sport titles like Valorant on Low-Medium settings.
Little to no gaming. Little gaming section may include E-Sport titles like Valorant on low-medium-ish graphics. I will use it mainly for web surfing, using Google office suite like docs, movies, and other similar tasks.
Good Keyboard, Good build quality, non-touchscreen, good input device (keyboard/ Touchpad)
I have 2 laptops in mind that are in the same price bracket with just 30-40 USD difference, the HP Envy 14 (14-eb0019TX) and the Asus Zenbook 14 (UM425UA-AM702TS), below are the specs HP Envy 14 (14-eb0019TX):-
Asus Zenbook 14 (UM425UA-AM702TS)
Since the launch of HP Envy 14, I have heard reviewers (like in Short Circuit, Just Josh, Matthew M.) say that most ultrabook or thin & light don't need an i7 or Ryzen 7, since they can't sustain the extra speeds due to thermal throttling and the i5 in this Envy beats out many similarly specced ultrabooks and thin and light i7 or ryzen 7. So I don't know which one should I go for as a business student as I want it for at least 5 years, I feel like the dedicated GPU in Envy might help me in the future, but I may be wrong considering the core count of Ryzen 7 in Zenbook. And yeah both laptops are priced very similarly, Envy being maybe 30-40 USD more than Zenbook. So I want to decide on a laptop which provides a better overall user experience in terms of build quality, display, keyboard & trackpad, battery life for a long run (5+ years down the road). You can recommend any other laptops too in this price range. Thank you. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 13 Jul 2021 07:14 PM PDT I'm looking for a new laptop to make development and life in general less annoying on the road. I'd like my machine to be able to handle my regular software development, occasional creative endeavors, exploration into machine learning, and life in general for someone who spends a lot of time on a computer. I currently run an Acer Aspire S (256GB SSD, 8GB ram, older i5) that I bought basically as an email machine because I had my work laptop running double duty at that time. My main complaints about it are that there's not enough storage, is regularly brought to its knees during routine tasks, and the display is a touch small/ so dim that it's basically unusable outside or in bright direct light. Surveying the current offering makes me feel like I'm searching for the holy grail, which looks like:
Price is not really a concern, willing to save for a bit if necessary. If choices are really as slim as they appear to be I'd consider lightweight 15" models. I came across the Thinkpad P14s Gen 2 which seems to tick the boxes, but would be interested to hear about what other options you've come across. [link] [comments] |
MacBook Air M1 base version, vs 16gb version and Pro base version. Posted: 13 Jul 2021 03:23 PM PDT So since I'm in need for a laptop for school, I was looking at the M1 MacBooks. I'm buying it as a business, so I'll write off the tax. So right now I have 3 options: Base version for 1000-1010 (800 euros) euros, the 16gb version for 1260-1270 (1000 euros) euros, and the pro version for 1230 euros (970 euros) Is the 16 go version worth more than the pro version? It's of course overkill for my school, but I want the MacBook to last after I'm done with school too and eventually go out to an university. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |

Laptop for Animation (mainly 2d and AE) and a bit of gaming Posted: 13 Jul 2021 05:25 PM PDT I'm in a bit of a dilemma with deciding on a laptop! My budget is $2000 - $2500. Preferably would like to keep it around $2000. In terms of usage, I just want a laptop that can handle Adobe programs, especially After Effects without lagging and overheating. And simultaneously use the browser. In the future, I do intend to use some 3d rendering software. That's about it. My current 7 year old Alienware can't do much without lagging and overheating. It had a battery and hard drive replacement. I've seen a lot of suggestions for ASUS ROG Zephyrus, but some negative reviews on Amazon is making me have doubts about it. Also, what are people's thoughts on purchasing laptops from Amazon? Secondly, a Dell salesperson offered me a customized Alienware x15 for $2700 (including taxes and warranty). But I felt like that was a bit too much. Any other recommendations or would be highly appreciated! My main concerns are the processor and RAM, since I don't expect to be gaming much. Please lmk what kind of processor would be appropriate, and not excessive! [link] [comments] |
Looking for the illusive gaming/college class combo (US/$1500) Posted: 13 Jul 2021 05:08 PM PDT Thanks everyone! Super overwhelmed as I don't buy computers often. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: US. Ideally less than 1000, but willing up to 1500. Are you open to refurbs/used? Sure, if you think it's quality still. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? No huge preferences. Battery life should be six hours doing non-gaming at a minimum. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not worried about weight, but should be something I can use in class without looking like I brought in a monster. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Probably 15' or less. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I've never been able to run a good game on a computer before. So things like EU4, Rimworld, maybe COD would be cool. I do want to be able to manage lots and lots of word documents, excel sheets etc. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No huge preference. Being able to run an flsom decent settings would be cool, but not required. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard as l be typing a lot. Definitely need the ability to plug in two monitors, but can be split. Right now I have hdmi, vga, and dvi, but could get new ones. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Huge requirement: fans don't go wild in class. Don't care what they're like at home.
