Any 14" inch gaming laptops besides the g14 and blade 14?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2021 01:51 PM PDT

Im a law student into gaming and I'd really like something portable without spending more than 2k after tax.

It seems if I want something with a 3070 my only 14" option is the Razer but even with the student discount it ends up being 2200.

Are there any other options out there?

Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3i or Acer Nitro 5

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 02:37 AM PDT

I'm a beginner, I don't know much how their specs are being compared to, please suggests me your preference.

    i3 - Intel i5 10300h - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 - 8GB RAM + 1TB HDD + 256 SSD - 15.6 FHD IPS @ 120 HZ

    Nitro 5 - AMD Ryzen 5 4600H - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 - 8GB + 1 TB HDD + 256 SDD - 15.6 FHD IPS @ 144 HZ

The lenovo is cheaper but I've read a couple of complaints regarding its display, heat temperature, fan noise and its low battery backup

[USA] [Under 2k] Looking for decently powerful ultrabook that doesn't thermal throttle at the first opportunity

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 04:01 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:Preferably under $2000, open to spend more if it is really worth it, Windows-only (so no M1 MBP comments please, I know it is great, but I need Windows)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?Build quality, ultrabook, performance. Decent battery life is fine, not looking for 12 hr and such crazy numbers. Bias towards performance without throttling.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?5.5 lb is the max I can go but under 4.4 lb would be preferable.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.14"/15" or higher
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.Lot of coding and multitasking many electron apps (think VS Code, VS 2019, Teams/Slack, Outlook, Discord, etc.). Some gaming once in a while. I am building a separate gaming PC so don't need too much gaming focus here.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?Happy if it runs truck sim games (ETS2/ATS from SCS) and Football Manager just to distract me when I am away from home.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?Need a good keyboard since I will be typing a lot. Good build quality a must. Would like to have some form of Windows Hello (ok with either face or fingerprint) for easy login. I also have a 4k60 monitor (Dell U2718Q), so it needs to be able to run that too. I have seen the new XPS models but have too much PTSD from the thermal throttling of my current machine. I have 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage and would like to be close to that if possible. If I had to pick one, I'd pick the storage and can potentially let RAM drop to 16 GB if you think it won't affect my performance too much. Also would be nice to have 11th gen Intel/Ryzen 5000.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.4 years ago, I made the mistake of buying an everything device. I bought a top of the line, packed to the gills, XPS 15 9560. It was fine for the initial year or two but as I did more stuff on it and ran more programs at once, it started to throttle and throttle. I have undervolted (before it got disabled in a BIOS update), repasted twice, put VRM pads, cleaned the fans, and whatever I could do. I am finally done with the experiment and plan to build a PC (once I can get my hands on some parts ffs) but I want to replace this laptop with a laptop that is decently powerful, doesn't heat up and throttle me so much (I am open to trying out 15W U-series equivalent Intel chips too if the 40W chips are what is causing this to overheat like this) and just need a GPU that can handle the games listed above at low-moderate settings. Good cooling is what I value more over raw power that I can't use anyway. I look for laptops and end up in the ROG pages (as I look for parts for my TBD PC), but I don't want such a device that would probably throttle me 2 years down the line. Suggest something sensible please. If I seem to be wanting a unicorn device, please tell me which parts are unrealistic and suggest accordingly. Help me out please.

Sorry for the wall of text at the end. I am just frustrated.

Lenovo Legion 5(non pro) with Ryzen 7 and RTX 3060 vs Lenovo Legion 5 Pro with Ryzen 5 and RTX 3060

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 02:32 AM PDT

I can't decide between these two. I will use my laptop for everything(school) mainly gaming and programming and a little bit of video editing and browsing. Is the performance worth it over the display because I'm a bit scared like the ryzen 5 will be enough in performance and long-term use? And how much better display does the pro model has is the 1440p a big deal? Or I should wait for the rx6600 version of the laptops?

    Lightweight laptop

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 01:08 AM PDT

    Hello and Good Morning!

I hope I've taken the right steps in creating this post and that a laptop can be found that will cover most of my bases.

Don't hesitate to ask me for any clarification, and thank you for your hard work and help!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      £850 (+/- 10%), UK
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Definitely open, but would prefer new. If used and in good condition, along with a warranty to cover, I would be set.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Not interested in anything different from a regular laptop. I would like firstly a light and compact laptop and then performance should be prioritised. Hopefully with some bought warranty to keep everything as safe as possible due to my bad luck with electronics.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
The lighter they are the better, I would take certain downgrades in performance for a lighter weight as this will be a daily carrier. Hopefully something around the 15" form factor.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15", but that is more about the ease of storing in a small bag, not the screen itself.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Music Editing and light gaming. Programmes: Waveform, Ableton Live 11. Games: Valorant, WoW.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
As long as Valorant is running properly, I'm alright. Don't mind too much about fps above 60 and I'm ok with medium settings.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
No need for anything special. HDMI port on the laptop is a given I hope. No real need for an optical drive.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I would like this laptop to be as light and compact as possible within this budget (+/- 10%). I'm not physically strong and I don't want a daily workout on my way to school.

[CA] Looking for a LIGHT laptop for both university & gaming!

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 12:55 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$2200 CAD, willing to spend a bit more if needed
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Nope
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
A balance between all of them would be nice. I'm looking at a lot of 16GB, 1TB, RTX 20/30 series laptops that aren't too bulky.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
SUUUUPER important. I was mainly looking at the lightest possible gaming laptops (but need help!).
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15".
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Want to do some gaming. Maybe PUBG, Overwatch, GTA?
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Not sure, smooth enough to run the games decently?
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Need a webcam. A nice keyboard would be great too.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I was mainly considering MSI Stealth 15M (16GB, 1TB, RTX 3060, 3.75 lbs). I'm scared that any laptop over ~4.2lbs will be way too heavy to carry around :( Thoughts?

Higher base Frequency or boost frequency?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 12:07 AM PDT

My current laptop is an i5 dual core 7200U with 2.5 - 3.1 GHz clock speed. I am planning to upgrade to a laptop with any of the folowing configs. Kindly keep in mind that my work will be mostly VScode, Jupyter, sklearn.

    Ryzen 5 Hexa core 5500U 2.1 - 4.0 GHz

    Ryzen 5 Quad Core 3450U 2.1 - 3.5 GHz

    Ryzen 3 Quad Core 4300U 2.7 - 3.7 GHz

It can be observed that the first two has a slower base freq. and a higher boost freq. compared to my existing config. If I choose a processor from them, will I observe a significant improvement in performance? Shouldnt I aim for the third one which has a higher base freq. and boost freq. ?

      - HDD/SSD does not matter at all to me, I have a replacement regardless
      - I'd prefer a solid keyboard and touchpad, as it'll be for on the go use only
      - Finger print reader would be neat but not mandatory :)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      - I'm a photographer on the side and going into electrical engineering, so if anyone happens to also be an engineer and knows anything I don't that'd be helpful, please lmk :)
      - If you can help me out and find me an epic laptop I'd totally be down to paypal/cashapp/whatever you some cash for the help (or just give u reddit gold lmfao)

    Thanks everyone!

Durable, long lasting laptop for audio production and programming? $1,400 soft budget

    Posted: 15 Jul 2021 10:18 PM PDT

Ive been looking for a windows laptop that I can take outside a lot to get inspiration from nature, so I really want just a really durable one to throw in bags, and not explode when dropped. I don't care too much about weight, size, or looks too much.
I like to primarily do audio/synth stuff and programming, so a real good AMD CPU is my main focus. and also lots of battery life. Id really want battery life from this. comfortability, a nice feeling backlit keyboard for typing lots, and a good, big trackpad, just a computer that feels good to use for long sessions.

I wont be using this for gaming much, so I don't need amazing graphics. mid tier ram is alright.
storage space isn't a focus, but its nice to have.

Id really want one that wont die on me in 1 year, I've had real bad experience with hardware rot and slowing over time in both laptops I've owned so far, and I'm sure that isn't always the case, I want this one to last. Thank you for any help~

[CA] [sub $1700 CAD] Best Linux-compatible Laptop for Programming/Scientific Computing

    Posted: 15 Jul 2021 10:06 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Sub $1700 CAD, should ship to Canada without having to pay import fees

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

No unless there's an extremely compelling reason to be

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality and QC is vitally important, must be ultra reliable and durable to withstand being in a backpack, battery life should be good but doesn't have to be stellar, performance should be so-so, I want at least 8gb of RAM, 256gb (minimum) of NVMe SSD, decent CPU, integrated graphics is fine, though would prefer something slightly better in that department.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Thinness is nice, I don't mind carrying a slightly heavier laptop but it should still be somewhat portable, though I care much more about durability

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

At least 14 inches. 15 and higher is better.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      Not really.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      No gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good keyboard is a must, I don't want a number pad to the right, backlit is also nice but not necessary. No touchpad please.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

It is critical that this laptop has linux supported hardware, I will either be running ubuntu or debian,I might switch between the two.

I had a Dell XPS 15 previously, I loved every bit of that laptop but the quality control bit me in the ass, there was a hardware failure after only two years of use, which is unacceptable to me as I need to be able to depend on it. I could be open to another Dell if there's solid evidence that the QC issues have been fixed, but otherwise I would prefer to avoid them out of distrust.

If possible, I'd like to avoid soldered RAM, though I know it's almost ubiquitous nowadays.

In the US looking for a gaming laptop around $1,500 USD (willing to flex $100-$200 upwards)

    Posted: 15 Jul 2021 03:21 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      • Around $1,500 USD, although I am willing to flex that budget up $100-$200 if it really seems to be worth it
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      • No, I would like to buy a new laptop.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      • Mainly looking for something with high performance and build quality, and good future proofing (looking for it to tide me over for at least 3 years while I'm stationed overseas, then I can get back and build a real battle station)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      • Not super important, as it'll probably stay in my apartment 95% of the time
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      • Around 15" probably, but bigger would be better than smaller
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      • This laptop will be almost exclusively used for gaming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      • I'd like to be able to run games like Kingdom Come Deliverance, Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord, Rising Storm, FPS's (like COD/Battlefield), Stardew Valley, etc., at high-max settings and 60 FPS if possible
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • A good keyboard, solid build quality, and a nice screen would all be great. I don't need a touch screen or finger print reader or anything crazy, and I'll be using an external mouse so the touch pad isn't too terribly important either. Basically I just need the things that are necessary for gaming, anything else is just gravy on top
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      • I've been using a Lenovo y410p for years, and it's been an excellent laptop for me. Still runs some of the games I want it to (like Stardew Valley), but it's absolutely aged out and I think it's finally time to invest in a replacement. It can't play many new games, and struggles even with games like RuneScape 3 unless it's on min-low settings. I'm looking for something that'll allow me to play the new games that are coming out, and games that have come out in the past that have been just a bit too much for the Lenovo (The Witcher 3, Skyrim with some graphics enhancements, etc.). If it's relevant, I will be stationed in Okinawa for the next three years so I need to make sure it works there, though I don't think that should be an issue

$1400/70,000 PHP Philippines Zoom cold 13" Laptop

    Posted: 15 Jul 2021 09:03 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      -70,000PHP-
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      -No-
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
-Performance>Build quality>battery life. I want this to work reliably with no thermal issues, preferably with minimal "deck flex"-
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
-Must be less than 4 pounds. Thinness doesn't matter-
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      -12"-14"-
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
-No. I'll run zoom calls with many participants for long hours, possibly outside. A browser with some tabs and documents open in the background.-
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      -N/A-
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
-NO thermal problems and Minimal deck flex. Would be nice to have a good webcam, nothing worse than macbook 720p webcam-
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
-Philippines is very hot and humid, I want no overheating or hot while in use laptops. I just want to run big zoom calls like you would on a phone, but with less heat than a phone. I considered the M1 macbook air, M1 macbook pro, Dell Inspiron 15 7501, Dell XPS, and a iPad. I'm worried about thermal problems in all those models-
