Laptop of 7 years just kicked the bucket, need suggestions to buy one ASAP!

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 06:43 PM PDT

EDIT: I filled out the laptop questionnaire below in a comment!

I don't know a ton about computer specs, etc so I need some serious help.

I had a Mac laptop for the past 7 years (bought in 2014)

I'm not dead set on buying another Mac. What I am focused on is getting a laptop that will last yet also fit my needs and budget.

Budget: Low to middle 900s maximum USD.

I'm looking for a computer that can handle: 1. School (main need, I'm still going through school for at least 1 more year, my old laptop got through only a few years after my bachelors, smh )

2.Digital Artwork (work well with Wacom tablet drivers, CSP, Photoshop, etc smoothly for hours)

3.Gaming (doesn't have to be super serious, I'm casual, not a twitch streamer)

    Thank you!

Picked a laptop online but couldn't find it on msi.com

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 05:02 AM PDT

I'm loving in India and I'm in need of a gaming laptop and had found one after months of shortlisting and consideration. It was on Flipkart.com link below. It was MSI GF65 THIN Core i5 10th gen, 16GB, 512GB SSD, 6GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660Ti/144 hz. 10SDR-1283IN.

I wanted to read some more reviews so I got into MSI's website and started looking for it. I couldn't find it. I looked through the website again and again but there isn't a GF65 on MSI.com with the above specs. I don't want to get scammed but Flipkart is one of the most trusted websites so I don't know what to do.

~$1500, U.S. – productivity, photo editing, some gaming

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 03:30 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    up to around $1500. USA

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Sure! Would highly prefer if they have some warranty or good return policy though.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Ultrabook with touch screen option preferred. No 2-in-1 though. About ~6hr battery life for school work and just browsing. Battery life while gaming or photo editing doesn't matter. I'd like a decent build quality to last 3+ years.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

~4.5 lbs would be ideal. definitely under 5 lbs please.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • 13.3" to 15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

photoshop, lightroom, after effects. current games: genshin impact, minecraft, overwatch.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

mostly want to play genshin impact on high settings with 60fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

reliable build quality and touch screen preferred. Prefer a keyboard without a number pad. When at home I will connect to 4k monitor and external keyboard.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I would prefer it to look more professional since I will be carrying it around to school and maybe future work places. I have done some research and I am interested in the HP Envy 15 with the gtx 1660ti maxq and multi-touch configuration. It seems to fit my needs, has a nice look, and has a vapor chamber for the thermals. But I've heard some things about HP laptops dying relatively quickly. I'd hate to invest in this and then have it die after a year or two. If anyone has an input on this "rumor?", qc, or this laptop for my needs I'd love to hear it! https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/ConfigureView?catalogId=10051&langId=-1&storeId=10151&urlLangId=&catEntryId=3074457345619573822&quantity=1

I don't know much about laptops so any comments / recommendations would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Looking for a solid choice! (800-1000 usd range)

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 03:00 AM PDT

Archeology student here. Questionnaire filled below :) Looking for a new laptop! Mainly for a good screen and smoove performance, one that'll last a while.

Office, Acrobat and such in optimal performance. Oh and that it'll be quiet 🤫 I'm mainly reading, writing, and viewing artifacts, so a decent screen is a must. multitasking is also important.

Not really used to apple (don't own any) but open to the suggestion if it's significantly better. Nothing really specific, just looking for a solid laptop that'll do the work extra well.

    Thanks people of reddit!

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 1000 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • no, looking for new

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • #1 Build quality, #2 Performance, #3 Battery life

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Not very important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • Standard-ish, not small, so 13" and up.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • No, but as mentioned, I am viewing high res photos.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality is a must since I'm going to be carrying it around. A touch screen can be nice but isn't a necessity.

Looking for Best Value Laptop (<2k)

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 02:48 AM PDT

I know a lot of the price of gaming laptops, at least from what I've heard, is inflated by lights and unimportant parts. What do you guys think is the most value for power without wasting money on features that I'll never use?

Laptops always worry me due to the fact that they cant be upgraded easily and stuff, but I move a lot and so PC's are rarely convenient.

    Laptop for college and gaming

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 02:19 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

2500$ preferred. 3000$ absolute max. Will be purchasing in us.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I'd say everything is equal important for me but performance>build>battery if I have no choice. Battery shouldn't be less than 5hrs on light use.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13"-16"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

The laptop will be used for rendering in blender, editing in photo shop and premier and a ton of coding with multiple windows open at a time. I game alot too.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I will be using a 1440p 170hz monitor and expect decent enuf framerates.Apex, valorant and COD: warzone at 120+ FPS if possible (low settings) . Alot of open world games like witcher 3, resident evil 8, Minecraft rtx, AC: Valhalla and battlefield V at playable FPS on the higher side of graphical spectrum. (Rtx would be fun)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A high resolution screen (1440p or above) with atleast 120hz of refresh rate. 5+ hours of battery on low brightness, rgb turned down(if any) and general internet surfing/school use. Reputable QC hopefully. Should also have direct means to run a 1440p 170hz monitor without any dongle or hub.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Things that are necessary for me:

    • webcam

    • atleast one usb a port and a couple of usb c

    • good backlit keyboard(rgb is also fine).

    • Should not have the red and black gamery theme or weird shape and curves on body (like the ge66 and predator lineup). Rgb on exterior is fine as long as it can turn off.

    • a tenkeyless keyboard (no number pad)

    • a good hinge so that screen doesn't wobble while typing.

    • over all weight with charging brick less than 4 kilos

    • a display port, hdmi or thunderbolt output which can run a 1440p 170hz display.

Things that I would love to have, but can sacrifice if there are no options:

    • 350+ nits of brightness.

    • new 30 series gpu (can wait for them to be back in stock)

    • ethernet jack

    • usb c thunder bolt with PD charging.

    • a mux switch or advanced Optimus for best performance in esport titles.

    • should get quiet when I want it to get quiet

    • future upgradibilty. (SSD and ram)

    • a non plastic build.

I just want something relaible that can be good enuf for games. Pls don't recommend the legion 5 pro as the looks are too aggressive for me and it's really heckin' chonky. I am not sure about razer blades since I have heard about very bad qc and laptops actually dying really quickly, but I would love some honest opinion on the blades. Thanks for the help!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Preferably $0-670 USD
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply 2 in 1 form factor and a good battery life isn't necessary. Im looking for something which could handle heavy loads of work eg. (programming, gaming, video editing)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I need this laptop to be able to smoothly edit videos, with some light programming and gaming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Usually, I play CS:GO, BOCW, Minecraft and Warzone on low settings and to have it above 60fps.

    1080p 300hz 3ms vs 1440p 165hz 3ms

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 01:05 AM PDT

okay so i brought a laptop online and a slightly different model arrived... im not sure if this has worked in my favour or if i have been given an inferior model. The make and all the specs are the same, they are both 3060 rtx m gpu and 5800h ryzen 7 cpu.

heres a link to a in depth look at both laptops

    https://www.laptopmag.com/uk/news/asus-reveals-new-rog-strix-g15-gaming-laptop-and-it-boasts-a-300hz-display#:~:text=There%20are%20three%20display%20options%20available%20for%20the,response%20time%2C%20and%20is%20100%25%20DCIP-3%20color%20accurate

    .

The laptop i recieved was the 300hz 1080p model but from what i heard thats only for really needed for professional gaming will i notice the difference going to 165hz?

if this helps the main things the laptop will be used for are:

    1. Music production (Fl Studio)
    2. Music Video Editing
    3. Album covers
    4. General art

    5.photoshop

    1. gaming

    (dark souls 1 2 3)

    (Sekiro)

    (world of warcraft)

    (no mans sky)

    (emulators)

    (Gta)

(occationally competative games like dark souls pvp fortnite and cs go)

And just maybe other new games as they come out

    my main concerns are:

    • is this going to make my computer temps hotter
    • will 1080 loop bad on the 1440
    • iim pretty sure it will but how often is this an issue for 1440p users?
    • i will have to play some games in 1080p and it will look worse than on an actual 1080p display
    • when i make content it will be better optimised for 1440p display and when most people see it in 1080 will look worse than if i made it myself in 1080p originally (art in general)
    • which is best for contect creation(photoshop, video editing) at firsti ipresumed 1440p but then thought most people who see the content will be viewing in 1080p
    • is the 3060 laptop version (6gb) good enough for 1440 gaming??

at the moment in 1080p games like wow and left for dead are playing at 200 frames and dark souls is capped to 60 anyway. (Of force future souls borne games might remove all frame rate caps)

But will playing in 1440p Will this drop most games to like 60s

Also i know most people say 1080p is enough for 15" display but i definetly notice the blocky pixles while playing dark souls 3

I know 300hz refresh rate is insane but will i actually notice the different from that and 165hz i heard 144hz was high ?

Anyhow, thanks for taking the time reading and replying!

Laptop for School/Productivity with a hint of Netflix

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 03:16 PM PDT

Hey all. Looking for a laptop that I can use during classes and for job searching, internet browsing, and a little Netflix/Prime viewing. Appreciate any advice yall can provide.

    The Form

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Got a max budget of ~$900 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
I'm not above getting used laptops but would greatly prefer new
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I would prioritize performance and battery life first, with build quality following and form afterwards. Taken a big interest in 2-in-1 laptops but I can work with normal ones too.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I would prefer a lighter, thinner laptop as it will be something I'll carry to class, cafes, and beyond on a daily basis
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I think my sweet spot is around 14-15'', no more than that
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No, this laptop will be used for schoolwork, internet browsing, Microsoft office work and a little video streaming. I intend to build a PC at a later point for video editing/gaming/etc.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Prefer to have at least 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM, good build quality, and at least a decent screen quality. Anything else beyond that is icing on the cake for me.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm not wholly familiar with the differences between brands such as Intel, AMD, Dell, HP and so on so any advice on what's better than others would be appreciated!

Laptop for Student ~$1600 AUD, Australia

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 10:28 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Around ~1600 AUD, preferably not over $1900
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Would prefer new
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I want good build quality, decent battery life, good keyboard and screen, nothing way too bulky, 2-1 is not super beneficial as I do not draw /do art and I also usually type notes or note by hand
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Nothing stupid bulky, preferably something sleek and reasonable
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I would prefer 14 or 15 inches but anything from 13 to 16 is fine.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I am not looking to do heavy gaming as I already have a desktop pc. I would prefer if the laptop could do some light gaming when I'm on the go. Won't be doing CAD. Possible photo and video editing as I do use my DLSR camera occasionally.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
League of Legends above 60fps (this is required), but possibly some other small games or esports titles (not as important), maybe genshin impact (not crazy important either)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
100% want a good keyboard and comfortable typing experience as I plan to do some programming etc. I also want a reliable build quality that doesn't feel cheap or like plastic. Touch screen isn't necessary, a fingerprint reader would be nice.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I have been doing some research and I came down to a few options being the M1 Macbook Air / Pro, the Dell XPS 13 and the Asus Vivabook. The Macbook seems to be the most consistent as it has a good camera (compared to the XPS), good keyboard, nice build quality, a great CPU and unmatched in efficiency and battery life (which is crazy to think in 2021 as I never liked Macbooks and deterred others from buying them in the past based on their value specifications wise). It appears on par if not better than the other options today though. I also have an iPhone 12 Pro and an Apple Watch Series 6 so I am halfway deep into the Apple Ecosystem. I have been using Windows for over a decade so I hope the transition would be suitable too.
However, gaming could be an issue on this machine as some games will not work etc. This is where compatibility is a HUGE issue, I would buy the Macbook if M1 was better supported IMO. I also want to try out Linux and plan to do so in a VM (which I already run on my desktop) but I don't think I can run a VM without forking out $100 for parallels at the moment. Otherwise, I just have to wait for VMware or someone else to port Linux over which kinda sucks. I have read reports but there really isn't an ETA on it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

    Lenovo legion 5 pro difference?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 10:10 PM PDT

Hey guys quick question so based on the advice from this subreddit. I'm going with a lenovo legion 5 pro. The only thing is I'm seeing huge differences in price. Like a 500 dollar price difference. Can someone explain to me why this would be the case? The specs look to be the same across the board.

Want to get a deal but nervous to make the wrong choice

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 05:59 PM PDT

Hey folks. I'm not sure if this is allowed because I'm not so much asking "Which laptop should I buy?" but rather "Is there a safe way to get it on the cheap?"

Context: The last time I bought a laptop was 2015 - a MacBook Air, 11", smallest amount of memory. It served me pretty damn well over the last 6 yrs with only minor issues. Unfortunately, it recently decided to go out with a bang. Per the tech that worked on it, it would cost much more to fix it than it's worth at this point. So I've decided to just get myself a new one.

I want another MacBook Air. I know that people who actually know things about computers are generally not fans of Apple products (or so I've heard), but I loved my previous MacBook and want another. You could try to convince me to get something else, but I feel that my mind is made up.

However, I'd rather not buy directly from Apple. Reasons are 1) last time I got a laptop, I managed to save $100 by getting a brand new one off of eBay. I think the box may have been open or something. 2) I also like the idea of getting a gently used one, to prevent waste, as I'm sure there are a lot of perfectly fine used ones out there.

I'm nervous about getting one that's gently used, because what happens if the seller isn't truthful about its condition? Are there certain sites that are best to buy used computers from? Is eBay safe, or no? Or is buying used too risky and I should just follow the same method I did last time, getting a brand new one that is out of the box etc.?

Older generation intel i5 vs newer generation intel celeron/pentium

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 09:28 PM PDT

All i need is basic college needs with laptop and some gaming from early 2000s and older that i think it's not that heavy.

Question is, would you rather pick an old used thinkpad x/t series with intel i5 4th gen or a brand new budget laptop powered with newer celeron/pentium?

The cheaper the better as long it's sufficient for my needs, i don't wan't spend a lot of money to buy a laptop.

    3000 US Heavy performance laptop

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 03:11 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      1000-3000 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Only if it is necessary.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality, performance, and battery would be great but 2-in-1 Would be a good possibility because of being able to use the laptop for Zbrush/Art as well as note taking for school through the laptops stylus. On the other hand I might purchase a graphics tablet dedicated to notes and art so that I don't necessarily need the 2 in 1 aspect.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

This would only really be a plus, I don't care about lightweight or thinness. If it fits in a backpack that would be great.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

17 inch would be good but less would be fine.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Going to be using Zbrush (or 3D Sclupting), CAD, Ableton, as well as video and photo editing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not necessarily, if anything an option for a non gaming laptop with all my other wants/requirements and a gaming laptop with all my wants and requirements would be cool ! The gaming laptop would be for games such as The witcher 3 running at least 45 FPS. (Or the newest next gen games out running at least 45-55)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good sturdy keyboard would be great. As well as general build quality.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The ability to connect the laptop to extra monitors or a tv without slowdown or lag would be great. I might use the laptop to make music with others and for Computer Science homework or writing programs.

    Laptop for School

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 09:07 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Hoping at max ~$900 USD, or $1,000 including tax.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      I would prefer new ones.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I would really like to balance those out the most but if I were to choose, my priority would be in the order of: Performance, battery life, then build quality. Whether it's 2-in-1 doesn't matter much to me.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I'm hoping to use this for college, so the lighter it is, the better. Not the most important thing though.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Minimum of 14", 15" would be preferred (mainly because I really want the number pad on the right)
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Nope, I'm planning on basic classes (accounting and very simple economic modeling), Youtube, and Netflix.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      No gaming.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would at least like 256GB of SSD, 12GB RAM, and a decent screen (brightness). I don't mind plastic but any non-plastic (such as aluminum) casings would be very nice. (Sorry for the tough conditions)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I ordered Lenovo Flex 5 14" a week or two ago but since I really need the number keys, I am planning on returning it. I don't think there are any 14" laptops with the number keys on the right, but if there are please let me know. Below is the link to the item that I originally ordered.

Is the Acer Aspire E 15 a good laptop for a college student?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 08:55 PM PDT

I'm not that laptop savvy so I'll just say what I'd need my laptop for. - Using Microsoft Products - Video Editing (nothing too intense albeit) - Would like to dabble in music production - My friends have been wanting me to play League so hopefully a laptop that runs league decent.

    My budget is around $500-650.

    • I want a laptop that'll last me out of college (I'm going to be a junior in the Fall) I've heard good things about the Acer Aspire E 15. My only gripes about the laptop are:
    • Kinda wish the bezels were more minimal
    • Maybe a lighter laptop weight-wise

If you have any other laptop suggestions let me know!

I want a budget graphic design laptop

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 03:46 PM PDT

Hello, I am looking for a graphic design laptop and a bit of gaming (games like LoL, valorant, r6s...small games basically). My budget is 1000$ more or less... I have zero knowledge when it comes to PCs and laptops and i dont understand the specs stuff at all so I am worried that a store would scam be or me making a bad decision...

I can match the price of a Macbook air 2020 (1050$) but the fact that i also need to buy accessories other the ones I already have to match the outlets in that laptop would be too expensive...

I need the laptop to be used mainly for graphic design and some animation with a bit of gaming. Preferably touchscreen but if that would be too expensive I can give that up. What do you guys recommend? Thanks yall <3
