A laptop for school and play

A laptop for school and play

    Posted: 31 May 2021 09:20 PM PDT

Hey! I'm an incoming architecture student and I need a laptop that can handle rendering projects for me. I also game at my spare time. It's important for me to have something powerful yet portable. As of the moment I'm leaning heavily towards the Lenovo Legion 5 - 4600h + 1650ti @144hz priced at ~55,000 PHP (~$1,150). I just want to know if there's anything better out there.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      57,500 PHP (~$1,200)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality > Performance > Battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      I don't really care.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      Preferably 15.6" FHD or higher

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

School: AutoCAD, Revit, Sketch up, Blender, etc...

Games: Cities Skylines, COD Warzone and the MW series, GTA 5, etc...

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

The games mentioned above on mid to high settings @60 fps (although I can tone down the graphics for shooters if needed)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Build quality: Minimal to no issues with the structure, display, hinge, or external finish. Must have one display output (hdmi, usb-c display port, etc). Keyboard should have a numpad as well.

Performance: Preferably a hexa-core CPU, 1650 or higher GPU, RAM and storage are not an issue as long as they're upgradable, and the display should cover 90+% of sRGB.

Battery life: On-battery light to medium usage (eg. watching, typing, and browsing) should be 5+ hours and switchable graphics is highly appreciated.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm open to suggestions that fits the criteria. Thanks!

Stealth Gaming Laptop (US) for $3000 or less

    Posted: 31 May 2021 04:13 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $3,000
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    • Performance especially including dedicated graphics card because I'm going to game on this. 2. Build quality so can take a beating when traveling; 3. At least 15" screen; 3. Battery Life -- 2-4 hours is sufficient.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Less important than performance but would prefer laptop + power brick weigh less than 7lbs.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
At least 15" screen -- QHD or UHD
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Yes: (i) Gaming -- Borderlands 3, Doom Eternal; (ii) number crunching -- Tableau. Video/photo editing will not be allowed on this beast.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Borderlands 3, Doom Eternal. Badass settings.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Backlit keyboard a must and reliable build quality -- laptop that can take 75 trips a year through TSA screening.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I travel 50 trips a year with two laptops -- a Surface Book 2 and Surface Laptop. The Surface Laptop is getting retired due to multiple screen cracks. The Surface Book 2 cannot handle BL3 at badass settings. When not using this laptop for gaming, I will be with clients, etc., so professional look needed. Does not need integrated webcam.

Student laptop for 1,500 euro Ireland, EU help peas

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:46 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
E1,500 full price. E1,200 max with student discount. Ireland, EU. Starting college in September and want a light laptop with a touch screen.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I do have a budget Ryzen apu pc but it looks like I won't be able to upgrade that for the foreseeable future, so I would like the best specced laptop I can afford. I want 16gb ram and as much storage as possible. I don't have much experience with laptops and generally hate the keyboards, I have a DIY 60% keeb at home. I do think I would like digital notetaking and so I have been looking at 2in1s. Battery wise I'm sure I can charge it in college if necessary so doesn't need to be huge.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I definitely don't want a super heavy laptop to lug around. I was looking at the thin & light ones and 2in1s.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Under 15 inches I think.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
If I can do some light digital drawing or super light gaming like Stardew, that would be a bonus.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I'm not too fussy, if things like Stardew are decent to play I'm good. My pc is grand for MMOs etc.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'd like a touchscreen and one I can write on well for lectures etc. I use Notion, OneNote etc. I kinda hate all laptop keyboards so that isn't a major factor lol Security features like a fingerprint reader would be a bonus. I don't mind what it looks like honestly because if it's fugly Ill just cover it with a decal so that's not really something I'm worried about.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I won't need any mad software for college, but I may need to do some online college so a decent webcam would definitely be a bonus. I do have one on my pc but it's not amazing.

Need help! Looking for a gaming laptop

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:44 AM PDT

Until today I used my Lenovo Legion Y720, but sadly it died, I'm looking to buy a new and better laptop (mostly for gaming purposes), I would appreciate any suggestions!

I'm looking for a laptop that's capable of running most type of games preferably at high settints, games such as first person shooters (for example apex, battlefield, call of duty), and mmorpg games (that usually require a good single core performance (at least the old ones))

As far as budget, my max budget is 2000$-2200$ usd

I don't mind about laptop weight

And lastly the bigger the screen, the better it is! :)

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

2 in 1 laptop for college and light drawing

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 01:20 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $1200 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    1. 2 in 1 and a long batter life (9+ hours)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Extremely important, I will be carrying this laptop all around campus and on road trips. I would prefer it to be below 3 pounds and fairly thin.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      n/a
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Not really, just google chrome and a light drawing software. I might use it to sculpt in blender but that is not a priority. I'd take portability over power.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Just Emulators that don't take much to run.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? good to high quality keyboard as I will mostly use it for writing, touch screen, it does not need to include a pen but that would be nice.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I will be using this laptop for school and will be taking it on road trips every few months. I would mostly be using it to write or draw. I also don't need it to be too powerful but I will be using multiple chrome tabs and I know that takes a lot of RAM. I also would like to use it to sculpt in blender but I will not use it to render. I would use my desktop for that. I would just need it to run decently in evee.

Is M1 16Gb MacBook Air good for full stack development?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 10:53 AM PDT

Hi, I've heard good things about the M1 MacBooks and am interested in getting one. I would be using it to do full-stack dev work (angular, postgres, and net core) would the M1, 16Gb, 512Gb MacBook Air be suitable for this? The reason for MacBook is that I may branch out into creating apps so want a laptop that I can use to develop iOS apps. The screen size is not an issue for me. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

    Laptop buying suggestions

    Posted: 31 May 2021 10:07 PM PDT

I want to buy a new laptop but I am facing a very confusing situation. I have no problem with budget but would like to save as much as possible. There are two cases that I've encountered. I already have a good monitor and a great audio setup which utilises USB connectivity. The audio setup helps me record my guitar and listen to music over my great headphones.

    1) Buy a latest version of base MacBook Air and nothing else. This would make my monitor usage very less and I would have to get an adapter to connect my audio interface.

    2) Buy a mid Ranged windows laptop and use it only for the processor. I could buy a mechanical keyboard if I made this purchase. The screen and audio interface would also be used more often given the quality of screen these laptops have.

What would be the best choice for me given that the pandemic goes on for god knows how long.

    Thanks in advance.

Asus Vivobook or Acer Aspire 5

    I haven't bought a laptop since 2012.

I need something to pay bills, surf the internet, do word processing, excel spreadsheets and maybe take a class or two. Choosing between these two… I know they are more than I need but I also don't want them to age overnight. Thoughts?

Purchasing from Third Party Sellers on Amazon

    Posted: 31 May 2021 05:37 PM PDT

Sorry if this is not the appropriate sub-reddit. There is a specific HP Envy x360 I want that would take 30+ days to receive from HP, but is available to ship this week for ~$50 cheaper on Amazon from a seller named PCOnline365. Their rating is okay (93%), but since this is a ~$1k laptop, I don't want to get scammed. Is it safe ordering laptops from third-party sellers? Anyone have any experience?

Is there any other computer in this price range that I should be considering? What do you think about the price difference between the previous computers, on paper they look the same to me.

Laptop for Learning Coding and Graphic Design

    Posted: 31 May 2021 08:34 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      -$1300 USD-

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      -No-

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

-Lightweight and portable, long battery life, wouldn't mind a 2-in-1 if possible-

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

-I want it to be easily portable-

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      -15" or less-

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-Maybe some photo editing and modeling as well as coding-

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-Wouldn't mind doing very moderate gaming, such as simulation games, but gaming is very low on priority list (basically if it runs minecraft at 60+ frames it's fine-

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-Comfortable keyboard that isn't super loud and clicky and a crisp screen, preferably 1440p +-

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

-I've been recently looking into Lenovo computers, but didn't know much about reliability and overall use, thought this Reddit would give me a good idea-

    LOOKING FOR LAPTOP FOR SCHOOL/WORK

    Posted: 31 May 2021 08:20 PM PDT

    Hi,

I'm looking for a laptop that can be used for work (emails, google files, web based work tools), movie binging and also for school needs since I'm planning to enroll this incoming semester (computer science).

Can you suggest a 512gb ssd laptop?

I already narrowed my list down to 2 options but if you have other laptop suggestions, please comment down. Thank you so much!

And if you have any reviews on the 2 options below, feel free to share:

    HP

    Acer

Looking for a laptop to take to college

    Posted: 31 May 2021 08:17 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I'm hoping to stay around $1000 USD but my max is $2000 USD.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
I'm under the impression that refurbs are like new, so I wouldn't mind that at all. Not sure I like the idea of a used one since they could be damaged.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I just need a laptop with a good quality screen and keyboard. I don't need anything fancy (like ones that fold or have a touch screen). I'm planning on using it for school, graphic design most likely, and gaming, so good build quality and performance are a must. Battery life isn't super important. If it can last something around 7-8 hours it should be fine for a school day. Other than that I could charge it.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I don't want anything super bulky. Something that could fit into a backpack without killing me throughout the day would be nice. But I understand that more power means more size, so it isn't a deal-breaker if it's a bit bigger. Not looking for anything super thin since I'd worry about breaking it.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I'd like something around 15+ inches. Anything smaller seems counterintuitive for graphic design, gaming, and visual work.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'd be doing gaming for sure, possibly running 3D modeling/animation programs like Blender, as well as other general programs for school work. I like to mainly play League of Legends, Rocket League, and Minecraft.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I want to have a constistent minimum of 60 fps if possible. Anything better is a bonus since that's what I'm used to at this point. If I could run games at a higher quality resolution that would be amazing. In the past I've had to downgrade to low quality graphics to prioritize fps and avoid lagging or crashing.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'm pretty picky on keyboards. I use a mechanical keyboard with cherry mx switches with my pc. I tend to like a bit of a clicky noise, but I know that probably isn't great for college and being in the classroom lmao. I don't need or want to have touch screen, fingerprint reader, or webcam (I can get a webcam seperately if I need one).
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm fairly new and don't know much about what makes a good laptop (or pc for that matter). Things like ram and graphics cards are like a foreign language to me. If you could try to explain what I should be looking for or why any laptop you recommend is specifically good, I would really appreciate it. Also, I'm pretty specific about display quality (like how colors show up and how crisp everything looks). Thank you!
