What does a "dull display" mean in laptops reviews?

I reviewed some laptops and this was one of the common things I usually find in the "cons" section. What does it mean? And why is it considered a con?

Mildly CAD laptop, no gaming, €1000-€1200ish. Spain

    Posted: 21 May 2021 11:36 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
€1000-€1200ish. Could stretch more if worth the bit extra.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Nope.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Not too bothered about battery life as it will mostly be used plugged in.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      0.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15+inch probably
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Autocad, TiaPortal (Siemans), factory I/O
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Not gaming on laptop, have a desktop for that.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Physical RJ45. Optical not needed.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Finishing first year of a electrotecnical and automation course, and my current laptop is not up to it any more. Need a reasonably decent resolution screen, but refresh rate not important. Don`t know exactly what programs will be needed next year, but will be simulating some industrial instalations and 6-axis arms will be needed, so a reasonable graphics card is essential.

    Need help and suggestion

    Posted: 22 May 2021 01:52 AM PDT

Hello. I'm looking for a laptop in the $500 budget category. I'm a graphic designer. So, my requirement is 8-16gb RAM and a nice display. I know it's hard to fulfill those requirements in $500 budget, but I'm a college dropout and I can afford $500 to be honest.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions or should I go with a second hand laptop.

    Thanks 😊

17” laptop with USB C power.

    Posted: 22 May 2021 12:37 AM PDT

I have a little Dell work laptop (I'm dubious about its build quality). At home I drop it on my desk, plug the docking station into the USB C port and it has a keyboard, mouse 2 x 27" monitors and power supply all sorted. Sweet as. In my office I have the same facility (except I have 2 small mismatched monitors). I feel totally unproductive and frustrated with the small laptop screen alone. I am looking to retire my ~7YO Toshiba skull Candy Satellite and buy my own laptop/notebook that I can use with my home docking station or sometimes use in other parts of my house without the external monitors etc, but just plugging into any USB C wall charger. Battery life is not a big concern, but I don't want to always cart around a dedicated power supply. Away from the docking station tablet mode may be a nice option. On my new computer I will use Excel, Web, SMath, etc. I don't game. Youtube is addictive. If it weighs 1 kg great 10kg okay-ish but I do like a good strong build quality. My budget could stretch to ~ $1800 Australian. Please could you guys suggest options? Other thoughts? Thanks for your help! Sorry my request is so long.

    Alternative to Surface Pro?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 07:14 PM PDT

I just hate Microsoft's policy, if it gets to humid a water sticker will flip on you and they won't even work on it and just send it back. Looking for something mobile like the Surface Pro.

    Gaming laptop for around $1000?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 10:55 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • Around $1000. Willing to go $100 up and below.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Performance and battery life

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Would prefer less bulky.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Probably some light tier - mid tier games. Nothing too heavy.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • 60 FPS at least. Preferably 144, but it's not a big deal.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Good keyboard and reliable build quality. I don't mind how the keyboard is set however. Also I'd prefer the have trackpad centered, if possible.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • To summarize, I want a gaming laptop around $1000 that looks nice essentially. I don't want to see anything where there is a little area of space missing intentionally or something like that, just cause it doesn't look great.

    Thanks in advance!

Was originally planning to wait for the new MacBook pros that might get realesed later this year, but not sure if it's necessary for me too wait that long!

    Laptop for programming

    Posted: 22 May 2021 02:18 AM PDT

    Hey!

I'm looking for a new laptop, which will be used for programming mostly.

I'm doing net core, and angular - so it needs to support this well. Not doing anything with docker.

Will mostly use it by my desk, where I have a dual screen setup and keyboard. Hence, screen size and keyboard is not that important.

Been looking abit at macbook air m1, but I'm open for suggestions. Do you guys have any recommendations? 16gb ram, and 500+ ssd is my only requirements basically. And not over 2200$.

    Thanks!

Help me decide! Legion 5 vs Alienware m15 r5 vs HP Omen

    Posted: 21 May 2021 11:52 PM PDT

I'm trying to replace my 7 year old laptop and narrowed down to these. Please help me decide!

    1. Alienware m15 Ryzen™ Edition R5 (Ryzen 7 5800H, 8GBx2, RTX 3060 6GB , 256GB SSD, 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) 165Hz) - CAD 1899
    2. Omen 15 (Ryzen 5 5600H, 8GBx2, RTX 3060 6GB , 1 TB SSD, FHD (1920 x 1080) 144 Hz) - CAD 1699
    3. Legion 5 (Ryzen 7 4800H, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, RTX 2060 6GB, FHD (1920 x 1080) 144Hz - CAD1499 but OOS now.

My budget is under CAD 2000. I was going to get Legion 5 but it's out of stock at the moment but I'm willing to wait. I like the specs of Alienware but not the design, especially the alien logo. I also like Omen but not really a fan of HP products in general. I'm okay with the tech specs of these laptops but I really want to hear about the build quality or the user experience. I'd love to check these in person but none of them are available in stores around me. Can anyone please chime in?

All performance, no frills. Need 3 or 4 laptops quickly.

    Posted: 21 May 2021 10:38 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$450~500 each. No more than $1500 for all 3 (before tax is applied).

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Absolutely

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Totally unnecessary

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Totally unnecessary

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15.6" would be perfect, 14" absolute minimum, above 15.6" is overkill but could be made to work.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Old video games that ran fine (60fps+) on a 7th gen i5-7200 laptop with integrated graphics and 8gb memory.

Would like to run AutoCAD (it's still a 1~2 thread program, so single threaded performance is VERY important).

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Totally uninterested in anything other than maximum performance as cheap as possible.

I'm used to upgrading memory and well versed in applying liquid metal to CPUs (of which I still have lying around from my last project).

    Data Science/General School Use Laptop

    Posted: 21 May 2021 06:50 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1500 USD max., preferably in the 1000-1300 range.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance slightly edging build quality, battery life, form factor.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I'm a graduate student so portability is important.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13-15 inches.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Will be primarily for data science. Big machine learning tasks and such can be cloud computed. Tableau for visualization. Light Photoshop and Illustrator for visualization.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Not Gaming.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
16 gb RAM is a must. Windows. Touch screen would be nice but is not a deal breaker. Want something proven that will last.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
The M1 Mac is good but I can't find anything with 16GB that isn't at the top of my price range. Hoping a Windows option will be slightly cheaper? I value the price more than having a Mac as opposed to Windows.

    [Czechia][50000 CZK]A 14" laptop for a programmer

    Posted: 21 May 2021 04:37 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      ~50000 CZK
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    • ultrabook, high build quality; 2. performance 3. battery life is not that important, most of the time I have the laptop plugged in.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Will be carried around daily, pretty important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Has to be in range 13,9" - 14,5"; screen ratio 16:9 or 16:10, not 3:2.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Primarily needs to tackle programming tasks, running Docker, IDE, etc. Also should be good enough for light gaming (performance of current iGPUs seems to be enough). I sometimes do some machine learning work.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
low settings, basically mobas or mmorpgs.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good backlit keyboard is important. A high quality display is also very important. I do not want/need touch-screen or finger print reader. I need a webcamera (so zephyrus G14 is not viable). touchpad doesn't matter, I always use an external mouse. I need at least 16 GB of RAM. I also expect the SSD size to be 1 TB+. I need one USB-A.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
For reference, I'm currently using https://www.asus.com/cz/Laptops/For-Home/ZenBook/ZenBook-UX410/, which is sadly becoming unusable. Currently, I feel like there are not many laptops with AMD chips available in Czechia. So far it seems I will have to go with a laptop that has a i7-1165G7.
My current winner seems to be the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro 14ITL5. (this machine has a high quality screen (2,8K, 90Hz), 16 GB of RAM, 1TB SSD, 14" display size etc.) I'm thinking whether there's a machine that could be better. The only thing I dislike about this laptop is the absence of a HDMI port. I checked some other laptops that are available and I'm not exactly sure if they are better in any sense, namely: Acer Swift 3, 3X, 5; Asus ExpertBook B9400CEA-KC0290R, Vivobook S14 S435EA-KC035T, Zenbook 14 UX435EA-A5001T; Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14ITL05; Is my choice reasonable?

Please Help me decide between these

    Posted: 21 May 2021 11:16 AM PDT

I just started working as software engineer(mostly web/app dev). I like gaming but I dont have time to game alot(I kinda want to play cyberpunk but I also have a huge backlog of older games that I want to play, more recent games that Im interested in are hades, disco elysium, outer worlds, sekiro shadows die twice, hitman3). I am considering the following options

ASUS ROG Strix G15 (2021) Gaming Laptop, 15.6" 144Hz IPS Type FHD Display, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX, 16GB DDR4, 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD, RGB Keyboard, Windows 10, G513QM-ES94 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08ZLH4GZ7/ (I heard this has a rather bad monitor and it has no cam)

Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop, Intel i7-10750H, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU, 15.6" Full HD 144Hz 3ms IPS Display, 16GB DDR4, 512GB NVMe SSD, WiFi 6, RGB Keyboard, PH315-53-71HN https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-i7-10750H-Keyboard-PH315-53-71HN/dp/B08VKV5WQ1

My last laptop lasted 7 years. I kinda want this one to be future proof for a few years too. I can also add a little bit and wait for legion 5 pro.

I am based in Hong Kong so most deals on NA bestbuy, walmart, newegg are not available to me. I have a bigger mon in my office but I cant use it for gaming. I dont want to wait for much longer as my old laptop seems to be dying. I just want to get this out of my mind. I am spending too much time browsing for good deals...

    Laptop for engineering student

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
In US, absolutely no more than 1500 total
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance first, then build quality and battery life (these two could swing either way depending on laptop). Lastly, form factor.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Going to be a college student, so moderately to high importance. Around the 3.5 pound range is good.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Prefer a 15", but if it's too expensive I could go with a 13"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Possible to do beginner-intermediate CAD designs. Gaming isn't too important to me, maybe Minecraft here and there.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Not important.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Top things would be reliable build quality and good keyboard. Other things I could live without.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I've been looking at this Asus Zenbook for a while and was wondering if there's any good competitors in its price range? https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Ultra-Slim-i7-1165G7-Thunderbolt-UX435EG-XH74/dp/B08KH3Z5WW/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=asus+zenbook&qid=1621627184&sr=8-3

    [USA] RELIABLE WORK LAPTOP $500

    Posted: 21 May 2021 09:08 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $500
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
I am but please put my fears to rest about being spied on or my keystrokes logged
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
im more concerned with reliability but i dont want to purchase a dinosaur either,
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
not very, dont want something overly bulky tho
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
no, it would be just pulling up the dealership websites and logging information as needed(im a mechanic, i dont foresee this laptop reprogramming computers or something of that nature in the next couple of years), i usually have like 10 tabs open at all times on different sites
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
i dont foresee using it for this purpose
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
reliable build quality, a built-in numpad on the side is a dealbreaker for me
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
i heard lenovo was a durable laptop so im leaning towards them, my uncle who works in the "I.T." field says used laptops are a gamble and a friend said they put trackers in the laptops and spy on the family so i dont know what to believe now(please help me put these fears to rest, they are like $150-200 locally used),maybe im being too picky, if i am just let me know what my budget prob should be for what im asking, if i do end up going used i will prob replace the hard drive to a 1tb SSD(found a samsung on amazon for $115)

i guess im more interested in hearing about how true/false the thing is with trackers in the laptops monitoring my keystrokes and accessing the webcams to spy on me, plus what i should and should not look for or if i really only need like a 500gb SSD or something smaller or if im overthinking what i need in general, thanks again all!
